I am running a pretty nice system:
AMD 4400+ X2 (dual-core)
Radeon 1900XT 512mb PCI-E
2gb ram
300gb hard drive
WinXP Professional
all relevant up-to-date drivers
latest civ BTS patch
However, my game runs horribly slow, even on low render quality, low globe quality, and (at the lowest I tested it) medium graphics. When leaderheads appear, my game freezes for up to a minute before loading it. I can hear the leader's theme music playing this entire time.
Eventually, my game will crash and I will have to reboot.
The crash is specifically related to (as is said on the BSOD) the file "ati2cqag.dll."
What I've done to try to fix it:
- defrag hard drive
- completely update ATI drivers, including using a driver cleaner for the second try
- completely reinstalled Civ4, Warlords, and BTS
The crash still occurs after the game progresses to about ~100AD or sometimes a little later. I used to be able to play huge world maps with 18 civs with no slowdown while playing (time between turns sometimes took a negligibly small amount of time to process).
Please help! I want to play Civ4 again!!
edit: Also, I've added plenty of space for virtual memory, over 2gb! I have also tried using the "fix," found by searching the forums here, for the ati2cqag.dll problem, with no success.
