Well, I had been playing a game (Emperor lvl, 16 civs, random everything) and was having so much fun i thought i'd write a story about it. The beginning details are a bit fuzzy so i'll be ad libbing some of it (not like you would notice :)). i have no maps yet, but if there is sufficient interest I'll get some up.
**************************************************
Caesar looked upon the fertile plan ... his father had always told him the best place to be to run a business was on a river ... and while his aspirations were for far more than to be a simple inn keep, he thought he would hold true to his fathers words. He had managed to gather a number of tribes of locals together with words of forming a glorious empire, and here was the place to do it. A great river flowed through the region and vast fields of wheat lay to the southeast. A perfect place for a great city to be founded. He turned back to the mob behind him
"IT IS HERE WE SHALL FOUND ROME!!"
**************************************************
Caesar entered his throne room/stone hut. He wished he had more time to work on a place more suited for a future king, but alas, to many things needed to be done ... roads were being built to facilitate trade from the farmlands to the city ... a constant struggle to scrape together enough gold to hire conscripts to both act as his standing army and to scout out the region. Rome was but newly founded and already had been visited by emisaries of two other fledgling nations ... one from a distant land supposedly to the far north east, ruled by a man named Lincoln. His emissary was friendly enough, and although Caesar was generally suspicious of anything that might threaten his dream, he was glad to meet the American's (as they called themselves). The emissary was quick to trade what little knowledge he had with Caesar, and knowledge was power. The other emissary was what worried Caesar. Arriving from the south, this man made himself known as a diplomat from the emperor of China ... Supreme Lord Mao. Supreme Lord!! With all that pomp you would have thought the man ruled a vast empire rather than but one or two cities. But he certainly had both military prowess and power ... having marched straight to Rome with a squadron of men equiped with spears and bows. Fortunately he was not looking for war, but much like Lincoln, looking to trade knowledge. But this more than the small army worried Caesar. Any brute with armsmen can terrorise a city, but this man knew the worth of knowledge .. and the worth of demonstrating a strong military pressence. He would have to be watched ... watched VERY closely.
************************************************** **
Some time had gone by and Caesar was pleased. He had sent some of his best men out into the country side to try and gather more Romans together and it had worked. Cities were springing up all around. Unfortunalety, this good fortune was tempered with the news of other great nations rising to power all over the continent. There were the Babylons ... a culturely sophisticated people would thought in great length about science and religion ... a truley great people whom Caesar might have admired had they had a chance to prosper ... but their leader, Hamurabi, was a fool. Rather than hunt out better grounds, he founded a city in the middle of the great eastern mountain range, right next to a semi fertile valley. While from a devensive perspective, this may have seemed to be a wise move, his ability to expand was greatly limited as it would take days to venture from the city to the edge of mountain range no matter which direction he went. A fledgling civilization led by a bewitching beauty named Cleopatra had spawned in the far south eastern corner of the known world. Again, Caesar felt no threat as his informants told him of the somewhat inhospitable living conditions in that region ...namely the poor land which consisted mostly desert and plains with sporadic hills. To top it off ... a direct route from Rome to Thebes (their capitol city) would require a trip through a good deal of both desert and then mountains/hills. Even from the savage hill people to the west a great barbarian named Shaka had immerged. He took his people east ... down from the mountains overlooking the coast and settled on the plains there. Ceasar worried little about these savages for they both feared and respected his people. The real threat remained to the south ... with Mao. While for the time being, Caesar had managed to maintain friendly relations with all of his neighbors, he recognized the fact that land was sparse and sooner or later someone will decide to go to war to acquire more and the only two nations that had land fertile enough to be worth going to war over were the Americans and the Romans. To top it off, the Americans were tucked away in the far northeastern corner of the continent, bordered by only the Babylonians and the Romans. If the other rulers were to band together, Rome would be crushed, for although it was powerful, there was no way it could fight a war against 3, 4 or possibly even 5 different peoples. The only option was to go on the offensive ... and hope to gain the cooperation of others. Ceasar had a plan .....
