So, I've long wondered about the usefulness of declaring a Ceasefire. I don't recall the last time I sought one rather than a Peace Treaty. What's the difference? Can your troops remain in place in enemy territory or something? No turn limit before resuming hostilities?

It's 4000 BC. The state of non-war you are in with your neighbors is the same as the state of non-war you are in when you declare a cease-fire, which means that you can't enter borders (and get kicked out) but can immediately re-declare (though that means another 10 turns of not being able to talk).

CF is useful when you want to pause the war but re-declare soon. E.g., your overseas attack stack is about to die, but your reinforcements are already almost there.

CF is useful in other circumstances where you don't want or can't afford a formal peace treaty for 10 turns.
