View Full Version : What's the Best Random Event so far?
Photi Aug 24, 2007, 03:25 PM To mirror the other thread about worst RE's, what's your best RE so far?
i left a game right at the beginning of a war i was so excited, I think discussing civ is every bit as much fun as playing civ. anyway, i am playing a game right now as Gilgamesh, monarch, big and small, standard, normal. Catherine started pretty darn close to me and she just DoW'd (which is ok i have a stack of 7 Vultures, a level 3 longbow (feud sling+vass+barracks+protective) and 3 cats that were just about to head to moscow). One turn later, an RE pops up, turns out a heroic soldier of mine ran 26 miles to warn of the invasion. I am thinking ok this sounds good, and I go to accept it and it gave me a golden age! sweet! perfect lore for the heroic epic that still needs to be written. moscow here i come...
that's the first time ive had that event, so i started thinking there must be some more good ones out there.
Jamesds Aug 24, 2007, 03:36 PM When I read your thread title, I thought I'd tell of my random event which told of a soldier that ran many miles to warn of an invasion, which started a golden age in my nation - same as yours!
This is an excellent event, and it comes at a much needed time (war), so I'd say it is my favourite so far (and probably ever). Mine was made even better by the fact that I had the Mausoleum of Mausollos which increased my Golden Age to 12 turns. In total, I'd had 60 turns of golden age in that game. 3 from Great People, 1 from the said event, 1 from the Taj Mahal.
Lord_Zath Aug 24, 2007, 03:59 PM I think the best I've had gave buildings additional _.
For example, all harbors +1 commerce.

i just got calender and was going to build the MoM as soon as the GLib finished. that's probably my favorite new wonder from BtS.
mboettcher Aug 24, 2007, 04:17 PM Yeah the random events can come along and timely give u quests to. I always thought the most fun in the game was going to war. Screw those peaceful victories. I play imp/char and am always at war (with dif opponents to keep down weariness). Anyway best events i like are those quests that come up very timely when u want to invade that want u to build 12 of watever kind of unit (i got sword, musketteer and rifle b4). IT gives either drill I to all melee or city raider I to all sword (of which u have a lot now). How sweet is this? U build a massive early army and the game rewards u by making it really damn strong. These events rock.
RockTheCazbah87 Aug 24, 2007, 04:19 PM The swordsman quest is definitely worth it. On the other hand, the quest I recieved to build 34 Colosseums when I had 6 cities... that took the piss.
Zebra 9 Aug 24, 2007, 04:49 PM 34 Colosseums! I had to build 7 libraries on about turn 20 and I only had 4 cities on an archiplago map! That was a pain in the neck, and stupid me tried to do it too so I had seven cities, 1 in tundra and another 2 on an island with jungle. Neadless to say I failed with 1 library to go. Now for a best, I don't know. I realy havn't played as much as I want to so I have only gotten a few events, none of which where very spectacular.
Leeksoup Aug 24, 2007, 05:06 PM I got a quest in my current game that said:
"Your highest theologians have discovered the existence of a 'Holy Mountain' somewhere on this planet. Since it is clearly not inside your borders right now, you are tasked to expand and encompass it within your nation. Since you only know of its existence, there is no way to tell which mountain it is, so you'll just have to expand to all the Peaks you can find. Alternatively, if you build 25 religious buildings, your scholars think they can locate it for you, at which point you will still have to expand to it."
I'm gonna try, but this better have a DAMN good reward.
Herex Aug 24, 2007, 05:51 PM I got that event as well, in my current game.
Took me quite a while to finish, as I only had 6-7 cities, but I finally found the Peak, and sent a team to build a city.
Reward was +1 Happyness in each city. :D
Edit: I only had to build 14 buildings though - I guess it depends on mapsize etc.
I played normal speed, standard sized, Big and Small.
Scramble Aug 24, 2007, 07:02 PM I am quite the fan of the golden age one, but i recently got one where an artist was found making ice sculptures near some obscure tiny city.
It just so happened that that city was fighting a culture war with another empire, so the great artist super specialist helped immensly.
The Navy Seal Aug 24, 2007, 07:06 PM I'd say the theatre one where you can upgrade your theatre so it gives 6 culture.

Carnage04 Aug 24, 2007, 11:01 PM How many of those "Build X buildings" turn up with good rewards? The only one I have ever gotten is "Horse Whisper" build 7 stables. That should be easy enough but it always triggers really early....and I forget about it!
Honestly, probably the best one I got was playing Pericles and getting shock promotions for all of my Axes (Phalynx). Other than that I get "You found Parakeets", "You found a spice", "A natural disaster hit and didn't wipe out ALL of your buildings"
Peng Qi Aug 24, 2007, 11:15 PM I started on a crappy tundra peninsula one game that only had room for 2-3 cities on it at most, so I started building a settler ASAP and found the "least bad" place for my second city before spreading out off of the peninsula. It had a deer and some fish and pretty much nothing other than that, so I figured it would at least help get another settler out. The turn after I founded the city I got the event that adds deer to a forest tile. On top of that, I had just gotten a gold goody hut and so I could afford to spend the extra gold to get the free camp on it, so I ended up with a spectacular second city despite the marginality of the terrain other than that. Sure, it slowed down in the late game and became a pretty "meh" city, but it was a fantastic early game city and that's all I needed it for.
rustydusty10 Aug 25, 2007, 01:58 AM I had one that said my scout found a black substance and if i want to examine it for any possible uses, so i said yes and all Oil was revealed on the map. I was still in the BC times so i had a good advantage as to where to place my cities early on to grab that precious Oil. :D
ChaoticWanderer Aug 25, 2007, 02:40 AM the first great one I had doesnt sound like it is suppsoe to be good but it worked so well to my advantage. i had just building the great wall on a big island with one other race on it. then suddenly i get the message of attila the hun appearing near my boarders and about 10 barbarian horse archers are there. So since they cant enter my land they turn on the other race on the island and within 20 tuns i see the message of the other race being wiped out. i then send troops to whipe out the barbarians and boom the island is all mine without any work.
and second i was at war with three races at ocne it was a tool on my output. suddenly within three turns i aided two of the races soldiers fed a starving city in the other and boom i had no more war just like that and one of the races was up to pleasent with me in 5 turns because of the food and a trade
Moon Pine Aug 25, 2007, 04:29 AM How about a warning about barbarian horde nearby, then a great stack of axeman created just at your bolder ^^
My best Romdom event was all Axemen got free "Shock" promotion. Then my poor neighbor.........
Da_V_Man Aug 25, 2007, 05:07 AM The Harbour quest was good for me, strength 1 to all naval units. The tin one is good, so is the archers get str.1, or pikemen get shock (well, if you use them, I didn't so meh)
Brancaleone Aug 25, 2007, 05:34 AM I got a 'build 2 carriers, 3 destroyers, 2 battleships' one, or something similar, and as a prize i got +5 commerce on all harbors! Late game, this bonus just rocked.
Also, i probably got the HARDEST quest of all! Own cities on at least 10 different landmasses - on a Terra map, that means taking every little island for myself, declaring war on everyone. Impossible, but still, i had to complete this quest before Industrialism, and i was already at Railroad. I saved the game, and i was going to the world builder to cheat and find out what the prize was, but i disabled the world builder so i coundnt cheat :(... Anyone got this quest done already?
CivDude86 Aug 25, 2007, 08:22 AM Get a great prophet (there's 2 more options but they're not great either).
Best mid-late game event IMO is the federal reserve one, -25% inflation saves a lot of money over the rest of the game.

sourboy Aug 25, 2007, 11:02 AM Research breakthru was my fav... especially since I was barely ahead of the pack, preparing to invade a neighbor... and I was researching gunpowder at the time!
TheLastOne36 Aug 25, 2007, 06:59 PM i had a Great Prophet, didn't know what to use it for, so i put it to rest,
note i carried the holy city of hinduism. (only i was hindu though)
Then i get a message that my Hindu Missionary's LOVE there jobs, and that Hinduism is spread to every city on the continent.
AND the best part is that it was pangea!
I then took the great prophet and built th holy shrine of hinduism! Mind you it was in 800 AD or so, i went on with +10-15 gold at 100% research for the rest of the game! :rotfl:
18lama Aug 25, 2007, 09:20 PM I had this event about building 12 musketeers before inventing rifling or railroad. Achieving that also has a special bonus if you have Taj Mahal wonder built. So first I built the Taj mahal and had my first golden age (24 turns on Marathon) right at the onset of the invention of liberalism+free technology in this case - steel.
So I produce 2 GPs during the first golden age and start building banks and markets all around for greater gold output. When the golden age finishes, I assign my heroic epic city to make 12 musketeers in ~24 turns. I finish the quest just one turn before I am going to invent Assembly line(which will make musketeers obsolete). I intentionally skip railroad and rifling techs. After finishing the quest I am given options about promoting all musketeers with pinch and combat-1 or let them push for a harsher tax regime which will add ~650 gold to the treasury and the third is ........ Start a golden age of muskets!!!
Bam! just before I am going to start building factories in all my cities, I have started a golden age. By the time the second golden age ends I have not only invented railroad, rifling(useless IMHO) and biology...all of my cities now have factories!
bonafide11 Aug 25, 2007, 09:39 PM In one game with Lincoln, I had two events that provided my melee units with additional promotions. All my melee units were starting with both Drill I AND Cover! Considering I was also charismatic, my melee units were near unstoppable. Unfortunately, I had such an easy time conquering foreign civs that I actually drained my economy through overexpansion. I was really upset at myself for screwing this dream game up because I doubt I'll ever play another game where I get BOTH of those upgrades, especially when I'm a charismatic leader! Jeez I wish I had another chance at that...
Although it's two different events, not one, I don't think anyone can match that combination!

Although it's two different events, not one, I don't think anyone can match that combination! What I do if I'm risking overexpansion is make sure I get the tech that lets me build research in my cities. I'm still in trouble then, but not in quite as much trouble, haha.
Tlalynet Aug 26, 2007, 12:26 AM Truffles, +1 Food and Gold permanently is nice.
Unless Im geting them anyway ive been avoiding build X number of X units quests becasue twice I got screwd, the reward was Combat 1 to all units, But I always build Barracks and they already had Combat 1 so I got nothing, Sounds like it can turn out beter than that though.
Kindness to Soliders can be a lifesaver if your in a double war and you really need one to end, Happened to me, I was blitzing one guy and my neighbor on the other side decided to take advantage of me.
Got a free leadership on a warior once, I thought it was good cause that and Combat 6 are the only promotions I use GG's for, But he died as a Maceman milenia later...
Never had a free golden age event, sounds awesome though.
Reduced inflation, best one Ive ever had, My Gold per turn jumped permanently for the rest of the game.
microbe Aug 26, 2007, 12:44 AM I just got one that basically pay ~150g and have 70% chance of +1 happyface for all cities. And it worked!
Bocklin Aug 26, 2007, 03:42 AM I got a 'build 2 carriers, 3 destroyers, 2 battleships' one, or something similar, and as a prize i got +5 commerce on all harbors! Late game, this bonus just rocked.

Yes I received this quest and completed it two days ago. My big continent (which I had completely subdued with my early waves of Praetorians) was just south of a big chain of islands, so it was easy. The only drawback was the rising support costs for having so many cities.
IIRC I had the choice between the following rewards:
1) Spread your state religion to up to 20 of your own cities
2) Get a free Temple of your state religion for each cities where that religion is present
3) ???
Don't remember what the third one was, but I think it was tied to me controlling a wonder I didn't have.
I chose number 1 as I did not feel like building an army of missionaries (and to ship all of them on boats!).
Note that the quest says that you have to do it before you reach Industrialism, BUT you also fail (without any mention of it) when you discover Astronomy. I realised that 200 years after discovering Astronomy and had to go back to an old save to see what I could get out of the quest... :-(

KaytieKat Aug 26, 2007, 04:18 AM Hi
Well this wasn;t good as in making the game go easier or anything but it was good in a "coolies thats a new one to me" kinda thing hehe :)
It was still VERY early in the game like about classical just got started and my scout was just wandering along scouting and got message that said something like "your scout has stepped in some sticky stuff and it seems to burn very hot" and then after that oil loctaions were revealed all over the map.
My scout then said something bout wanting to load up the truck and move his family to Beverly but I pointed out how A) he was single and B) trucks werent invented yet so he just went back to scouting round after that :P.

Palpster Aug 26, 2007, 04:24 AM Federal Reserve one that cuts inflation has to be my favorite so far....has a pretty huge impact on economy in mid/late game.
Starting a Golden Age is also pretty good, except for the fact that Musketmen aren't really my favorite units to build. Of course they can always be upgraded later, I guess.
Kadasbrass Aug 26, 2007, 04:52 AM My personal favorite I experienced for first time recently. The last king died with no heirs (heriarchy rule). I had to choose how the new monarch was decided. Leading general via military coup (Free general specialist in capital), Let the nobles fight amoung themselves and the most cleaver one will emerge on top (free great merchant specialist in capitial), or Let the Priest use the old spiritualist guidelines to determine who has divine favor (free great priest specialist).
Was sitting bull with stonehenge, vasslage, and theocracy, was building aton of 10 exp longbowmen for the purpose of upgrading them at a future time. Was hard to decide since choice B and C gave me extra gold to help upgrade but A would of gave some of them an extra xp boost when I did upgrade them...
KMadCandy Aug 26, 2007, 04:56 AM I saved the game, and i was going to the world builder to cheat and find out what the prize was, but i disabled the world builder so i coundnt cheat :(... Anyone got this quest done already?
the great and powerful ori, my hero in so many ways, has posted a list of all the random events and quests. they're in spoiler boxes so you can preserve suspense if you want to (i do), but i did have to look up a quest reward once :mischief:. link to list (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=236727) the quests are in the last spoiler box, post #3.
