View Full Version : Slow...
mortichro Aug 25, 2007, 01:28 PM Ok im running on 512mb on memory and 2.4ghz on speed. They say the least requirment for BTS is 512mb and now when ever i play bts.. and especially when leader window starts popping up it loads for like at least 3 damn minutes.. just fot a screen to pop up.. and almost everything is lagging.. i ty to maximized the pc's memory speed but still.. the same. im tired of playing bts if this continues..
u guys have any tip so my game will run smoothly?
Cato the Elder Aug 25, 2007, 01:35 PM Playing smaller maps is the only thing that works for me. Don't go above standard (and with the standard amount of civs) and you ought to be fine..
Lord Neil Aug 25, 2007, 02:12 PM In the options you can turn off options that make more pop-ups, lower graphics, and maybe use the option to minimize pop-ups until your done your turn.

toft Aug 25, 2007, 02:25 PM I guess its too easy to say a new computer :p but you should in many cases consider 512 mb memory as 0 because the OS takes a lot. So another 512 at least. What videocard do you have?
My old pc was a 2.4 mhz with 1 gb ram and fx5700le videocard... I could play warlords... but it wasnt pretty.

2.4 mhz. that is an old pc. I'm sure you meant 2.4ghz. :)

Ah yea :crazyeye:
Dominico Aug 25, 2007, 02:47 PM Get more memory, defrag your computer and make sure you have the latest patches. Its lagging when leaderheads come up caus its having to load them onto page file instead of grabbing them from memory. Mine used to lag like mad till i got the patch which seemed to improve it.

If your hard drive is loading like mad ( I have no doubt it is) then more ram would help a lot. I would recommended adding another gig of ram if you want to play huge maps.
PieceOfMind Aug 25, 2007, 08:03 PM You need more memory without a doubt.
I've seen civ use 600MB of RAM on a fairly normal Large map game. I run with 1GB and I think I don't have enough. The OS of course uses up a few hundred alone as well so even 1GB is barely satisfactory. I plan to have 2GB before I'm satisfied.

Get a new computer!

You're computer is fine. All it needs is more RAM. An extra 1 gig would be excellent, but another 512M will make a very big difference. I have 2 gig, but on my normal huge maps, I STILL get gradual slowdown in the late game, after playing for 3-4 hours or more. To cure this, just save the game, quit back to desktop, give yourself a 5 min break ( the last not necessary but a good idea:)) and reload. And hey presto, the earlier slowdown is fixed....
Civ IV still has some memory allocation issues, though they are much, much better than they used to be...........
vilemerchant Aug 25, 2007, 09:31 PM Actually Drew is probably right (unless you have a crappy graphics card in which case you need to upgrade that too). I also have a 2.4ghz machine but with 1gb of RAM and the game is basically fine, and I always play large maps with a couple of tables of internet poker going at the same time :P
Like Drew says, if it does start slowing down a restart of the application will cure it. Some other ideas for us technologically challenged users:
Start from a fresh reboot.
Make sure your computer is not loading heaps of useless crap applications in the background on startup that are taking up memory for no reason. Anything to do with quicktime, itunes, winamp, msn, it's all taking up memory. Better just to load these aps when you actually need them then to have them or anything to do with them (and other crap programs) loading into your systray on startup.
Very important: make sure your C drive has plenty of free space on it. If it's packed full your whole computer will run like a turd.

With a 2.4ghz he is probably still stuck with AGP... and then its a flood of new hardware he needs, if he wants to upgrade instead of putting a bandage on a corpse...
CivDude86 Aug 26, 2007, 11:31 AM Could be a 2.4GHZ Core2Quad.;) OEMs love putting in fast processors in crappy systems.

True, but gpu capabilities really aren't that important to play Civ adequately. The problems the op stated are almost certainly just down to RAM.

Im just saying that you sometimes get more for your money, when buying all new stuff, instead of continuing to upgrade small seperate parts.

Oh I agree again....maybe if the OP has a friend who's willing to help, he could borrow a 512mb stick of RAM, stick it in his machine, fire up the game, and see the difference it makes. If its the difference he wants, then go and buy a 512 stick himself..cost effective if so ;)

Best advise so far IMHO.
bonafide11 Aug 26, 2007, 02:55 PM I used to play Civ Vanilla with only 512mb of Ram and it was way too slow and it crashed all the time. I bought an additional 512mb of Ram before Warlords came out and it helped out a lot, Civ never crashed anymore but it still lagged some between turns (my machine had some other problems with it though, it was a laptop and a bit outdated). For BTS, I got a new desktop with 3gb of Ram and lots of other nice features and now lag in Civ is only a distant memory! :)
xr006 Aug 28, 2007, 03:33 PM I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 and 2 GB RAM.
For fun, I'm running a Huge map with max civilizations in BtS. There are like 29 total civs right now in my game on 4 large continents and 2 mini continents.
The time after I push enter for end of turn is roughly 7 seconds.
I have the same problem as the OP. It happens at the beginning of each of my turns (after the globe stops spinning and stuff starts happening for my turn) whether it's a Leader wanting to chat or a build decision gump. Whatever the first gump is it takes like 30 seconds to completely load. After that everything is perfectly fine until the beginning of my next turn.
My hard drive is not constantly running.
To me this seems like a bug not a system requirements issue.

I have a very similar system and the same issues. The leader head windows seem to be the very worst, and I can consistently CTD every time Alexander asks me to wage war on Montezuma and I accept in a game I'm currently running.
xr006 Aug 28, 2007, 05:56 PM More information:
I just played a bunch of turns. The leader window is by far the longest. The build selection isn't too bad and the quickest I would say is an active unit.
I want to stress the game runs great otherwise 30 civs, huge map, etc.. It is only the first "choice" at the beginning of each turn that has a delay. Subsequent leader windows, build options, unit movement is all normal until end of turn.
cthom Aug 29, 2007, 06:57 AM i have similar specs to op, and find leaderheads won't load at all (just the frame). first time i played, the game stopped and went to desktop. i forgot i had a memory defragger running and it was giving me back as much as possible. this can happen 3 or 4 times in a few hours, but it means the game can keep going. before i had it running, my driver would stop completely and i had to re-boot.
RedRalphWiggum Aug 29, 2007, 07:21 AM Mine tends to lag between turns, the leaderhead issue only arises on Huge Maps (which make my game CTD anyway) and only in the very, very late game
xr006 Sep 02, 2007, 01:47 PM Is there any explanation for this or a workaround?
