I've been in the gaming mood lately (I'm Always in a gaming mood, but it's been worse lately), so I am going with a Sports Trivia thread. It's open to everybody (Yes, even the soccer hooligans can take part!;))

The rules: NO SEARCH ENGINE! Answer the question correctly and then post your next question. If you use a search engine, you might go straight to hell, so please don't. ;)

The First question is: Who was the last player to win a Triple Crown in hitting? (He actually TIED the lead in HRs, but that's just a technicality!:))

I'm quite sure it's not football, so after a little bit of thinking I guess it's baseball ? Is that correct ??

Who is the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event and which event was it?

I'm pretty sure it was the late, great, Sam Snead. I think he won a tournament when he was in his 60s. But I don't know which event. Hopefully someone else can fill in the rest.

Sodak,

Thanks for explaining a little bit. I have to confess I don't know so much of American sports, but I like to know a little bit more of these sports.

I'm going to give this one to Tim the E.The Slammer is correct.

He won the Greater Greensboro Open in 1965 aged 52.

He had many successes in his career. We won't mention the US Open.
He even shot his age at 67!..very impressive.

There is also a triple crown of pitching but hitting was specifically asked.

Carl Yazstremski (sp?) Played for the Boston Red Sox. You're right on the stats for the triple crown, Batting Average, Home Runs, RBIs (Runs Batted In)

I guess the next question is mine then. Since I can't think of much of anything, I'll give a fairly easy one (although perhaps not for those for whom a football is spherical!)

Name the only players to win the Heisman Trophy (and school/year if you like) while playing on a team that didn't have a winning record that year.

Flatlander Fox
Jun 06, 2002, 03:26 PM
Paul Hornung: Notre Dame (I HATE the Irish, but I remember a feature on him from last year's race...)

You said playerS?!?... That's the only one I know of...

TimTheEnchanter
Jun 06, 2002, 08:12 PM
It's sort of a trick question. The other player did not have a losing record either. The one you hear about is Hornung who went 2-8 in 56. Jay Berwanger, won the first Heisman in 1935 went 4-4 with the Univeristy of Chicago (I think)

By the way, good to hear you think so highly of my alma mater! ;)

I agree with Real Madrid, but they have won the Europa cup I (Champion's league) 6 or 7 times.
5x in the fifties.
once in the 60's and once in the 90's.
I'm not sure about the last one (the win in the 90's) therefore 6 or 7 times in total.

Jacques Anquetil was the first man ever to win the Tour de France five times. But he was not the favourite of the french public. There was another famous cycler who was the rival of Anquetil, but allways got second (he actually won it once). And until now, whenever in cycling someone finishes second for many times behind the same rider, everyone jokes, saying that he is the new *******. What was the name of that rider?

AVN
Jul 07, 2002, 01:36 AM
I think Mcdread means Raymond Poulidor, the eternal second, in that period. (1960's till early 70's) But IIRC he never won the Tour.

Joop Zoetemelk also was quite a number of times second in the Tour for example behind Merckx, van Impe and Hinault and he also deserved the title of "eternal second" for a long time. But Joop did win one Tour, namely in 1980 and therefore lost the right for this title.

- Pedro Delgado (1988)

Venues are stadiums? Then I am screwed...:( Just saw that AFTER I posted...

In using the term 'venue' I'm referring to the location of the court complex not the name of the centre court stadium. For instance the centre court stadium of the US Open is Arthur Ashe Stadium (from memory) which is part of a court complex known as?

I'm in a generous mood today, Wimbledon is one of the venues. :D Now what are the other three? :)

I had already (generously :D ) given you Wimbledon, and you are correct with Roland Garros for the French Open, now what about the US and Australian Opens? :)

US Open is Flushing Meadows or now the Arthur Ashe stadium I think and Aussie Open is the National Tennis Center or the old Flinders Park.

You're right mabz, the US Open is at Flushing Meadows and the Australian Open is at what was Flinders Park and now called Melbourne Park. :goodjob:

Your turn to ask a question. :)

Because I am a rugby fan it will be a rugby question but the Americans should still be able to have a go.

Who did the USA beat in the final of the 1924 Olympics in Paris to win the gold medal?:D

Wild guess: New Zealand?

AVN

Did New Zealand participate in the Olympics of 1924 ?

My guess is England, the mother country of rugby.

No it is not New Zealand or England. Both did not even compete in that event.

Maybe France? After all they did have the home advantage and nowadays (don't know about 1924) they have a fairly good rugby squad.

Another wild guess:Ireland?

Kemal is right. It was France which is a good guess because of the home ground advantage. You'd think that they would have been good enough to beat the US even that long ago. For a bit of trainspotting Romania got the bronze.

Your question now Kemal.

All right then, my question is about soccer but it is one most americans should be able tot answer:

What is the furthest the American soccer team has ever gotten to in a World championship, in which year, and to which team did they eventually lose?

For special bonus, what was the final score of that match?

Hint: it was some time ago....

Sodak

1930 semifinals

Sadly, I forget who beat them... Edit: or do I? Uruguay was not it, so it must have been Argentina...

Kemal
Aug 08, 2002, 01:54 PM
That's correct Sodak! They were beaten by Argentina 6-1 after victories over Belgium and Paraguay.
Of course, they almost reached the semifinals again this year, but were unlucky against Germany.

Your turn to ask a question Sodak.

 Apparently the gap between 'good' and 'best' that year was wide.

All I can think of now is a basketball question. The NBA has been in operation since the late 1940's...

What is the longest streak of championships won by teams other than the Lakers, Celtics, or Bulls?

Bonus: What years and teams?

Is it that nobody knows or that nobody cares? If nobody cares, I'll ask a new question...

I'll have a guess at 3 by the Detroit Pistons back in the 80's.

Kemal

I have little knowledge about NBA history, so for a 100% stab in the dark: 4 times by the New York Knicks in the 70's.

3 is correct! However, it was not one team that did it.

The 3 consecutive were:
1976 Washington Bullets
1977 Portland Trailblazers
1978 Seattle Supersonics

Other than that, the NBA has never had to wait more than 3 years for either the Lakers or Celtics to win - except in the 90s, when the Bulls bridged the gap.

Your turn, mabz.

Yep you are right Kenelly. Evidently the war wasn't totally over a socccer game but it was the spark.

Your question.

Name 3 Olympic disciplines which were part of the Olympic Games 1900 in Paris and are no longer part of Olympic program (2 of them were only part in 1900).

Rugby, Baseball and the 1 mile (as opposed to the 1500 metres :D )

Kemal

I know ropepulling (if that's the correct English word for it) was an Olympic event in the early history of the modern Olympics and it certainly isn't an Olympic event now. No idea about the other two though so that have to be guesses. Since they probably will be weird ones I'm going for petanque (sort of french bowling-type of game) and maybe even painting? You never know back in 1900... :)
