View Full Version : Civ'ers like a good AI challenge right? Armageddon Empires

I'd have to guess a lot of the Civ 4 crowd is like me. Love strategy games, love boardgames (but have no one to play them with), love good AI, and hate on-line multiplay. OK, so I know a lot of you play Civ on-line, but I can't schedule myself to do that kind of thing. It's too hard and I'm too flaky.

At any rate, Armageddon Empires is kind of like a board game & card game, but honestly that doesn't do it justice. A couple of the gaming forums I frequent have been talking about it quite a bit. Bill Harris has a blog where he outlines how to get into it http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/2007/08/armageddon-empires-play-guide-part-one_23.html and for him, this could be pc game of the year. I like too many games to say something so definitive myself... but do think a lot of you would end up enjoying this quite a bit.

Indy developer, and know from the get-go the interface is a little different.

BTW, except for Merakon's Star Chamber, and Astral Masters I don't care for card games. AE is certainly an exception though, as I feel like I'm playing a weird mix of BattleLore and a few other games. Without Bill's tutorial though, I was admittedly lost.

This looks pretty cool. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't have time to test it myself at the moment, but it does look interesting!

Yep, it is very well done, and loads of fun after you figure out what you're doing.

Holy zombie thread, Batman!

I recently bought this and must say that it is one of the best TBS games I have played in a long while. The UI is a bit clunky (but better than when I tried this months ago) and the learning curve is like a brick wall, but the gameplay... :)

I ran across this just a little while back and actually bookmarked the site. I need an extra time-eater right now about as much as I need an extra hole drilled into my forehead, but this does look good. Hopefully I'll find some time to actually get and play it in the future.

To drum up a little interest I will throw random words from the game out for people to peruse.

Free Mutant League, killer robots, squid-headed invaders from the stars, The Blue Jade Princess, tanks, nukes, jets, giants, assassins, saboteurs, deck-building, dragons, powered battle armor, minefields, genetic modification, heroes, Mungoes, ghost towns, air-to-air combat, dice-rolling, hex-grid, wasteland, mecha, spider-bots, omnivorous bacteria, cults, cards, recce, psiblasts, random maps, fog-of-war, stealth, abandoned missile silos, crashed Hiveships, etc.

Well, you get the picture.

My picture looks like Futurerama meets Simpsons on steroids.

Well, there is no Bender (or even Al Gore).

Demo is OK not a bad game but needs more viariety.

What more would you like to see?

That you Vic ?

Stuff like terran rather then plain deserts, actual maps not random generated ones which are hand made for scenarios. Of the top of my head you can have the player in the middle surrounded by AI, Or maps of the world and so on.

Instant dice rolls, auto resolve for combat, I think auto - one round button and an auto - entire battle button would speed up the inital encounters.

No, not Vic, just a fan.

I agree with the auto-resolve for battles that are foregone.

I saw my dad play it... didn't seem that great...

Oddly enough, Arkatsson, that is almost exactly what my kids said when they saw me play Civ.

I tried the demo and enjoyed it once i had figured out how to move units to unexplored tiles. The interface would definitely profit from some polishing. Especially the combat takes an unnecessarily high amount of clicking.
It's worth putting up with the inconvenience, though, and i might end up buying the game eventually.
