If they are to win, they have certainly started the script correctly.

These upsets must stop.I'll be broke soon

Ah Well. Portugal is doing a hell of a lot better than my Avs did last Friday against Detroit.

Jun 05, 2002, 03:44 AM
The U.S. actually participates in these things?

Is Portugal supposed to be any good or why is this a surprise?

Smash
Jun 05, 2002, 03:46 AM
Yes Portugal is one of the favorites. The US is...not.

What a great game this has turned out to be.I thought it was gonna be a snore show.Boy was i wrong.Happily so :D

Dell19
Jun 05, 2002, 03:46 AM
Portugal have a great team. They have one of the best players in the world and they should not be losing to the USA. Well I am hoping that the game will follow the same pattern as the Slovenia v Yugoslavia game in Euro 2000.

Knight-Dragon
Jun 05, 2002, 03:47 AM
Portugal is expected to be better methinks.

US 3 - Portugal 1 at the end of the first half.

Who would have thought it?

Andu Indorin
Jun 05, 2002, 03:56 AM
Heading into the Cup, Portugal ranked 5th in the World.

As for the U.S.: They've already scored more goals in one half than they did in the entire 1998 World Cup. (Steve Sampson was a f'ing idiot, what with his 1-5-4 formation.)

Please pardon my foul language; tenga que tener la aficcion ...

Dell19
Jun 05, 2002, 03:57 AM
No one but there is still hope that Portugal can win 4-3 as there is still another 45 minutes to go...

I would be thrilled to see a North American side do well. Not the North American team I'd prefer, but they'll do ;)

Look you have Mexico for that, its not a fair swap, the USA qualifying instead of Portugal...

Jun 05, 2002, 04:00 AM
Portugal...fantastic midfield, but where is the defence?
I bet they're getting a hammering from the coach right about now.

Andu Indorin
Jun 05, 2002, 04:07 AM
Ah, but we must remember. The US is capable of total defensive breakdowns. In their last "freindly" against the Netherlands, they played a solid game against the best team to not qualify for the Cup; but two defensive breakdowns resulted in a 2-0 loss.

Mexico?..argh,,those cheating wetbacks. You should see the stuff they have pulled in Azteca on us.Wars have broken out over less

You got that straight.Bloody impossible I'd say.I can't beleive Costa Rica managed it.Only due to CONCACAF observers that were sent in.
Last time we played in there, one player came back with a broken leg and another with a fractured cheek

But this win of the USA is the biggest sensation of this WC.
They won because of their great team spirit.

I still cannot beleive it. I guess at this level of play a bad day could spell disaster and a good day could spell an upset no matter what the rankings are.

i think portuguese coach oliveira made a hugh misstake when he let vitor baia be the goalkeeper. he has been injuried for while and was certainly not ready to play.

TimTheEnchanter
Jun 05, 2002, 07:49 AM
It looks like '94 all over again...A new team looks to be joining the big boys at the top of the socc...um...I mean football world and is everyone's hot pick to go far in the tournament (it was Colombia in 94). That team faces USA in opener, comes out flat and gets upset.

Now let's see if, like in 94, the favorite falls apart bickering over the unthinkable loss to a team from a country that doesn't even call the sport by the right name, while the USA sneaks into the second round (where they get waxed by a team that knows what they are doing -- probably Italy if I understand the matchups properly)

Jun 05, 2002, 07:52 AM
Brilliant, the Portugeuse deserved to lose, fair play to the USA, although I still don't want them to qualify. Portugal aren't the same team they were 12 months ago. The backbone of their team is beginning to age and fade. Many people thought Euro 2000 was their last chance to get some silverware.

Jun 05, 2002, 08:11 AM
If we want a chance to advance to the Round of 16, we've got to win Group D to avoid Italy at least. That would put us playing the Group G Runner-Up, likely to be Mexico or Croatia. I'd say we'd have better chances against them than we would Italy.

the goals for the us were caused by bad defending and when you are 3-0 down, its hard for any team to come back even Portugal.

I've seen this comment in other game threads, such as Belgium and Poland. Well, consistency is crucial! You can have the most outstanding talent in the world, but if they only play that way for 75 minutes, it doesn't matter. More success is found by teams that are not quite as good, but have no lapses. It's part of playing quality football.

and the goals by Portugal were despite good defense on the part of the US.???? The first was on an awful excuse for a clear, the second was one of the more powerful kicks for an own goal I've ever seen...

The USA own goal reminds me of my own goal when I played left back for Milltimber Primary School...lovely cross, and an excellent finish, shame it was for the wrong side :o

Yeah, and goals against the U.S. are also caused by bad defending.

The own goal one was bad luck. If you would have saw behind the play a little you would have saw a team member of Portugal ready to get an easy goal. He did the right thing in trying to kick it over the net and out of bounds though it didn't work like that.

Oh well I am still happy anyway with my US team. One more win and their in the second round! (Yeah I caculated it :P Wasn't that hard though to do if you think about it)

Yes, O'Brien is a good player, and a starter. (Most of the time)
He already won the title and the Amstel Cup with Ajax, maybe one more..............:D :D :D :D :D

What if the following plausible events happen:
Korea beats US by 1
Portugal Beats Poland by 2
US beats Poland by 1
Portugal Beats Korea by 1

Then the standings would be
Korea 2-1-0 Goal Differential +2
Portugal 2-1-0 Goal Differential +2
US 2-1-0 Goal differential +1
Poland 0-3-0

Isn't the first tie-breaker goal differential? In this case wouldn't Portugal and Korea go to round 2?

Dell19
Jun 07, 2002, 04:43 AM
I think for this world cup it goes like this: Points -> Goal difference -> Goals scored -> Result between the two teams -> alphabetical order ;)
