View Full Version : Did he fall or was he pushed?
Rodgers Jun 07, 2002, 08:23 AM Did Owen really earn that penalty? I only saw one shot of it on the telly and I'm SURE he wasn't even touched by the defender.
Did he dive then? Will he be fined a massive £5000 in a few days time?
Dell19 Jun 07, 2002, 08:31 AM If you see the camera from the side line (the one nearest to the dug outs) then it clearly looks like a penalty. From another view it looks like they may not have been contact but it was a stupid challenge that was very risky and had a high probability of resulting in a penalty.
Rodgers Jun 07, 2002, 08:35 AM Yeah - one of the people I watched it with said the same. I cant really argue with any conviction that it WASN'T a penalty - just a shame they couldn't have won it with a better goal though, that Scholes shot would have a beauty.
JoeM Jun 07, 2002, 08:38 AM Scholes shot
Owen shot
Sheringham shot
Beckham shot
Any of them. Just pick one, we won and we DESERVED to win!
YYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Hitro Jun 07, 2002, 09:22 AM I don't think there was any contact. Owen was diving but the defender was stupid enough to give Collina a reason to reward a penalty.
MrPresident Jun 07, 2002, 10:46 AM Collina is one of the best referees (if not the best) in the world. He had a clear view of the challenge and immediately gave a penalty. This to me is enough proof that it was a penalty.

Exactly.
End of thread.
Baleog Jun 07, 2002, 08:04 PM Probably the only incident in the game that wasn't a dive. Apart from that time Batistuta took out Cole, and then had the cheek to claim Cole dived.
Crimson Sunrise Jun 07, 2002, 10:51 PM The defender Pochettino got, at best, hardly any contact on Owen. What sickens me is not that England won, but that the game was decided by the referee giving a marginal decision.
Ankka Jun 08, 2002, 12:46 AM Maybe he was pushed, but he did fall very easily, I mean the push wasn't very hard.
I guess it's anyway useless at this time to discuss about it any more...

Myartar Jun 08, 2002, 12:01 PM It looked to me he was going for the ball and owen just juked to his right w/ the ball making the defender hit his shin. No question that the fall was at least a little over acted. If Owen is so weak that a slight touch like that will take him out, I'm suprised the physical play of Argentina didn't kill him!
What I love is when guys celebrate like they just showed the most amazing skill or they're soo shocked and happy when they make a PK. I mean if it was a hard foul that had the intention of hurting a teammate, yeah, party like it's 1999, but on something like that, tip your hat(figuratively) for your fans and get on w/ it!
Civman10 Jun 08, 2002, 12:42 PM come on it was a penalty. he was clearly fouled. Remember Owen was dribbling cross the defender and thus only slight contact would be needed to bring him down. also owen is a small bloke and thus is easier to bring down
kittenOFchaos Jun 08, 2002, 05:10 PM If that Argentinian was going for the ball then he has the reactions of a female driver on a mobile phone.
Though I wouldn't ever feel sorry for Argentina if it wasn't a penalty as they pride themselves for "the hand of god" and whose amateur dramatics got Beckham sent off in 1998.
Hangings too good for them :D

So happy that I'm not the only one who believes this.
A number of my friends have an expression for winning a game of pool because the other guy accidentally sunk the 8 ball. "It's like winning the world cup with a penalty kick." Yeah, it's a win, but as my friend Victor says, "its the sort of win you should be ashamed to have, because it's not like you actually earned it."

Dell19 Jun 09, 2002, 02:04 AM A goal is a goal...I'm sure ever team would rather win with a penalty rather than lose to a normal goal...
Rain Jun 09, 2002, 06:08 AM Well it looked like there was marginal contact but owen was in a precarious position when the contact was made so it made the fall look a bit more spectatular than might normally have been the case.
On the other hand maybe its just divine retribution from the "Hand of God" :)
starlifter Jun 10, 2002, 02:24 AM :goodjob: to England! It could happen.... :D
PieceMaker Jun 10, 2002, 09:38 AM I think Owen was fouled and the penalty was deserved. I also think he did embelish it a bit, but the foul did occur and the call was correct. The same play would have been called a foul outside the box, but defenders just cannot afford to flail as aggressively inside the penalty area.
If you consider that Owen really only needed a half-step to unleash a decent shot at close range, you can see how he was robbed of that when he was fouled. The penalty is nothing to be ashamed of. It was not a gift.
