Heart of the Republic Volume II
A Rome: Total War AAR
203 BC
It was a dreadfully dull day in northern Sicily. There was heavy rainfall, and most of the citizens of Messina preferred to remain indoors if they could help it. For now the streets were occupied by the workmen and traders of the city, Messina was an important trade centre of the Republic, and her shipyards were of supreme importance. Most of the Roman fleet had been born here, and even now more vessels were being constructed to continue the blockade of Carthage, Rome’s mortal enemy.
Not far from the shipyards, a lone Roman General stood alone. For days now, PrinceScampey III had been coming to the beaches to scan the horizon, waiting for the first sign of a Roman fleet. One was due to arrive within days, bringing with it a fresh Roman army for his command. This force, trained in the elite camps of central Italy, was to be sent into the Carthaginian heartland on a mission of conquest, to break her power once and for all, and confirm the Republics position as the supreme power of the Western Mediterranean. A difficult task for any General, but PrinceScampey seemed to be relishing this opportunity with almost fanatical drive.
His solitude was interrupted by a rider, who rode up beside the General. PrinceScampey quickly recognised him as Senator Kan’ Sharuminar IV, one of his many advisors. He dismounted and handed PrinceScampey a piece of rolled parchment.
“You are aware that it’s raining?” the Senator said, pulling a hood over his head and holding his robes close. “And that as a fairly important General, you can get people to tell you when your army arrives?”
“I prefer to know first,” said PrinceScampey, unrolling the parchment. “What’s this?”
“Message from Clericus in the south,” replied Kan, “The Carthaginians have broken through the blockade.”
“They’re heading for Sicily?” Scampey asked, alarmed. He did not want his plans for invasion delayed by an invasion of the island.
“I don’t think so. They were heading east - towards Greece. Or the Adriatic. They must know how weak our fleet is there.”
“You sound like you already know where they’re going.”
“I do. Obviously the Carthaginians have gotten wind of your invasion force and are planning one of their own. If they break through the naval defences at Tarentum, they can drop whatever force they’re carrying wherever they feel like.” Kan sighed, “It’s a short trip to Rome from the east coast.”
“We go for Carthage, they go for Rome.” Scampey murmured.
“Obviously the Senate will be wanting all available armies to return to Italy to prepare for the defence. In particular yours - we can’t afford our northern lines weakened with the current Sarmatian threat.”
PrinceScampey said nothing for a while, staring out at the sea again. On the horizon, the mast of a ship slowly came into view.
“I’m under orders from the Consular to invade Carthage.” he said. “I intend to see it through.”
“The Consular is dead, General. The Senate rules for now.”
“Then until they elect a new leader, then I shall follow the orders of the old.” new ships were on the horizon now. “Rome will survive, and I shall see to it that the Carthaginians have no home to return to.”
“You’re a stubborn bastard, you know that?” Kan said, smiling. “But I expected as much. Good luck on your campaign, General.”
The Senator took the parchment from Scampey’s hands and tore it into two. The General didn’t even notice him mount his horse and leave, being too transfixed on the horizon. The fleet was totally visible now, his army had arrived…

Friends! Romans! CFC’ers, lend me your ears. Again. This is part two of my Heart of the Republic (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=186238) series, born a year after the launch of the first part. Happy anniversary to all who fought for the Republic (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=4532309&postcount=2) this past year!
As before, my main characters are made up of posters who wish to be part of it - either part of the Senate, or a General of the Roman army. I will ask that all (even those who were in it before) request participation again, so I have a good idea of the people to be used.
For newcomers! There is a bit of history to this AAR (After-Action-Report), but that’ll all be summarised in post three, and I quite recommend just flinging yourself in regardless. In general, I play the game then write an update. You lot all argue among yourselves a while, then I work out what the consensus is and do it in-game.
A note on updates: At worst there will be one a week, at best three. I absolutely promise to do my best not to have a half-year gap between updates this time.
And to all, I trust you enjoy this as much as I do :)
Game: Rome: Total War with Total Realism installed.
Difficulty: Normal

You can choose to be a General or a Senator.
A General gets mentioned more, but has less power to influence events in the Senate. He leads armies, has a lower life expectancy and is less in charge of his fate
A Senator remains in Rome, but has power to vote on issues ranging from declarations of war to where we should focus funds. They influence how I play the game
A special position is the Consular. His word is law, and he can veto votes and influence the Republic with a single word. He can only be voted in by the Senate, and if he is currently a Senator. An unpopular Consular can be deposed by Generals or Senators

Chapter One: A New Age for Rome
Volum Sep 15, 2007, 10:47 AM I will be Senator Volum!
I think that the invasion of Carthage must be postponed until we know what the evil Carthagians have planed now. I also think part of our fleet should be sent as reinforcements to the Adriatic/Greece area. The sooner we can stop this fleet the better.
I also demand a full report on how they managed to break trough our blockade!
nodikus Sep 15, 2007, 12:48 PM I'll be a General again.
Where did you get that picture?
Captain2 Sep 15, 2007, 02:38 PM Captainus returns

Maniacal Sep 15, 2007, 07:54 PM The invasion shall go ahead as planned. However I want our navy to concentrate on Carthage, keeping up the blockade and huting down their ships. My army shall take Carthage and enslave the populace. If it's a bloody battle or if Carthage does something against us, then Carthage burns.
After Carthage we must concentrate on taking out their armies and ports.
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 15, 2007, 08:22 PM I will be Senator Volum!

The Roman Navy, though the supreme power in the western Mediterranean, is stretched thin. A focused force can easily punch through. The eastern Mediterranean is weakly protected, and this is why Carthage could sail unopposed.
I'll be a General again.
Where did you get that picture?
Random google search for a pic of ancient Rome, though I thought this fitted the opening post better.

steviejay Sep 16, 2007, 06:57 AM Woo, I wish to hold my nose and enter the senate. Only a clear head can help lead Rome to greatness ;)

Senator Pugwashus reporting for duty!
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 16, 2007, 12:49 PM Welcome back folks! I shall update the information posts over the next few days, with a new update on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Junglecutter Sep 18, 2007, 07:32 AM I apply for general(Gen. JC)
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 18, 2007, 08:42 AM I've sorted out our current Senators to govern parts of Rome. I have my reasons for most of their positions. It means very little in the Senate, just for effect.
Senators
Kan' Sharuminar IV - Senator of Central Italy
I'm in charge of the AAR, I get to have permanent residency in our home provinces :smug:
Volum - Senator of Northern Gaul
As a new Senator, you get to go off to the frontiers! Enjoy your stay, and do watch out for those nasty Sarmatians. I hear the Germans are rather friendly, however.
Captainus III - Senator of Northern Italy
Captainus I conquered and defended Northern Italy during his long lifetime, so it seems fair to put you here
Yurey II - Senator of Iberia
Yurey I ended the Iberian campaign, effectively bringing total control of the Western Mediterranean to Rome. Now probably the second-richest provinces in the Republic
StevieJey III - Senator of Southern Gaul
StevieJey II effectively destroyed Gaul in his lifetime, and began the Iberian campaign from here. Makes sense to put you in this heavily-Romanised part of the world, with it's capital in Massilia.
Darth Pugwashius - Senator of Sicily and the Mediterranean Islands
To make sure our ships are in prime condition, and to defend against pirates ;)
Raisinus Branius III - Senator of Southern Italy
The traditional spot for our scheming Senator, and probably the most peaceful part of the Republic after Rome itself.
Generals gain armies as they come, with only a few holding control over current forces. I still have to hand control of the lucrative Army of the North to someone though...
Maniacal Sep 18, 2007, 01:52 PM *coughlucerativeforundertakerscough*
e350tb Sep 19, 2007, 12:46 AM I'll support Captainus IF he allows an invasion of Britainnia immediatly after war on Carthage.
Captain2 Sep 19, 2007, 05:31 AM if I can actually make the decision I'll decide based on how well the war against Carthage goes, if we lose our army and are being threatened by an invasion into Italy, I can't say it would be a good idea to invade Britannia
however barring total defeat down there, I could see supporting an invasion of the Isles if I could get some idea of our odds of winning beforehand
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 19, 2007, 05:56 AM I think the main problem would be justifying invading Britain while the Sarmatians continue their attacks across Gaul and Austria. We're only just holding them off as it is. At least if we fail against Carthage, we can fall back to Sicily and rely on the blockade. No such protection in the north.
*coughlucerativeforundertakerscough*
It gives you permission to use Gladiator quotes though. Anyone else who does it receives divine intervention, lightning-bolt style.
There shall be no such permission to use 300 quotes, no matter who eventually governs Sparta ;)
Darth_Pugwash Sep 19, 2007, 07:39 AM Raze Carthage to the ground and sow the ground with salt!
Captain2 Sep 19, 2007, 10:20 AM how rough is it in the north?
if its as bad as it sounds, it seems worthy of raising an army to keep them away

A Rome: Total War AAR
Part One
203 BC
The weather in Rome was just as bad as it was in Sicily. Heavy rains continued to pour down across Italy, though it made little difference to the daily lives of the citizens. The capital of the Republic was always active, regardless of the weather.
The Senate Building was no exception, particularly given recent events. Since the death of Yurey four months ago, the centre of the Republic had begun a flurry of reforms, designed to reorganise itself after the massive expansions of the past eighty years. New regulations regarding the abilities of the leaders of the Republic, adjusting the layout of the Provinces, defining just how much power the Consular - supreme leader of Rome - was granted. All had been finalised except for one important detail - who would become the new leader of the Republic?
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8796/003ct1.png
Supreme leader of the Republic - the Consular
The previous leader had never officially announced an heir to the position, preferring instead to let the Senate vote on a successor. Almost immediately two names were put forward for the position -the Senators Raisinus Branius and Captainus.
The former came from a long line of Senators, and it was well known that each had done their utmost to achieve power in the Senate. Most famously was Raisinus II, who had been prevented from gaining the position of Consular by StevieJey II, then attempted to gain it by force through an assassination attempt. It’s failure cost him his life, and the end of the House of Raisinus Branius as a major political power. His heir was now attempting to restore his House’s legacy to greatness.
Captainus III came from a more noble, if weaker background. His ancestors were leaders in the Roman army, renowned for their conquests in northern Italy and war against Sarmatia. They had little experience in the Senate, but were backed by being part of the powerful House of PrinceScampey, and the young Senator’s campaign was undoubtedly being helped by its leaders upcoming invasion of Carthage. A victory for Captainus would mean a more military-orientated government, though undoubtedly there were many Senators hoping to influence Captainus for their own gains.
For the past two months both Senators had been campaigning to win the votes of the people and, more importantly, their fellow Senators and Generals. Both had hoped to have more time to continue their efforts, but were effectively cut short by the horrifying news that a Carthaginian fleet had broken through the Roman blockade of west Africa and was moving towards the Adriatic. With Italy under direct threat, the Republic needed a leader to rally around quickly, and there was no doubt that it could be anyone other than Captainus, with his military background. A formal vote was not even necessary, Raisinus stepped down from his campaign as the threat had increased, allowing his opponent to become Consular by default. Not a moment to soon.
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/5589/002qw7.jpg
The Carthaginian Army lands in Italy
Captainus had barely settled into his new residency on the Palatine Hill before being informed that a large Carthaginian force had landed near Corfinium, on the east coast of Italy. Apparently, rather than deter their rogue fleet, the storms across Italy had given them the perfect cover to launch their assault.
With little defences bar token city garrisons and no sign of PrinceScampey’s army coming to the rescue, Italy - and Rome itself - was threatened with destruction for the first time in almost two hundred years…
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 19, 2007, 02:41 PM Raze Carthage to the ground and sow the ground with salt!
We destroyed it once before yet they came back. This time we should move in permenantly!
how rough is it in the north?
if its as bad as it sounds, it seems worthy of raising an army to keep them away
Very rough would be an understatement. If you remember the big battles against the Sarmatians that I wrote about in the first part, that's happening every couple of years. Northern Italy raises a fresh army every few years or so, then I hurl them north.
The good news is that the Sarmatians take just as many losses as we do, so it's a stalemate at the moment.
@All: I did hope to have a proper vote for the Consular position, but Raisin Bran already told me via msn that he doesn't have the time to keep up with this for now (hence why he's in it but hasn't posted yet). Captainus III is our leader now!
Darth_Pugwash Sep 19, 2007, 03:06 PM All hail Consular Captainus! (has a nice ring!)
How long will it take to round up an army to fight the Carthaginians in Italy?
Maniacal Sep 19, 2007, 03:11 PM Ave Captianius! This is a good oppurtunity to strike at Carthage, with one of their armie's in Italy.
Captain2 Sep 19, 2007, 04:33 PM Consular Captainus III sounds rather nice :D
*sends his supporters a package of cookies* this shall be a golden age
anyway, do we have anything close enough to fight the landing army?
since this is our second war against them, check the army that landed in Italy to see if the leader is Hannibal :p
IronMan2055 Sep 19, 2007, 05:26 PM Aww, no cookies for me, I was a Bran Booster. Anyway what are the actual defences of Rome?
Maniacal Sep 20, 2007, 12:30 AM You stay away from my cookies IronMan.
*munch munch*
e350tb Sep 20, 2007, 03:13 AM *BURP*
On to destroy Carthage!
Volum Sep 20, 2007, 02:51 PM Like i said, we should have figured out what Carthage was up too. The question is now, do we have anything to stop them with? What good does burning Carthage if Rome burns with it?
First priority now must be raising a new army to protect Rome, i dont like it but maybe it is possible to send a few veteran units from the northern borders (is this possible without leaving us wide open, kan?) A millitary man like Captainius must surlee see the damages that could be done if Carthage where allowed to run free?
steviejay Sep 20, 2007, 03:02 PM Mmmm cookies.
Are there any worthy Cartographers in the land? Must we rely on old fishwives and buck toothed beggers to hear about what the world around us looks like. Or perhaps it would be best to wait for the Punic dogs to come to the walls of Rome and then perhaps my curiousity will be answered by their drunken boasts?
Captain2 Sep 20, 2007, 03:05 PM A millitary man like Captainius must surlee see the damages that could be done if Carthage where allowed to run free?
I have yet to order that the army from carthage remain untouched, and waiting for such an order will be a very long wait indeed
I know that raising an army from scratch is often costly and slow, if we have anything in the area capable of fending them off it should be our top priority, if we have nothing then we can raise an army
Rome will never burn with someone from the Scampy house in command
Kan' Sharuminar Sep 20, 2007, 05:13 PM Aww, no cookies for me, I was a Bran Booster. Anyway what are the actual defences of Rome?
Very little, as I'm trying to keep it as free from military forces as historically popular. The Elite Guard exists there though, as do the most powerful wall defences of the Republic.

Likely we could get a few cavalry units from the north, given that they're top priority for training against the Sarmatians. Anything else would have to be mercenaries from central Italy.

It takes roughly 2-5 years to raise an effective army for the northern wars alone. That's without taking the time to organise the forces into one and marching them to their destination.

This pleases StevieJey
Maniacal Sep 27, 2007, 01:17 AM KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAN!
I would like to recommend that we keep a small army (say, half a stack) in tarantium.

Kan' Sharuminar Sep 27, 2007, 04:30 PM My apologies - I've been busy (blame Halo 3 and work,) but do have an update planned. Problem is it requires the players to make a choice at the end, which in turn will help decide Rome's fate. Don't want to screw that update up

Kan' Sharuminar Oct 01, 2007, 04:26 PM I suppose to get some semblance of a story going, I'll alter the next update (still not going to be out until Saturday) by putting out the important vote/choices to all.
@Consular Captainus: Will you call upon the cavalry reserves of the northern army. Bear in mind this will weaken the Sarmatian front, and may not arrive in time to save Rome. In addition, will you evacuate yourself to Massilia to lead Rome from a safer haven?
@Senators: Will you remain in Rome, or flee to Massilia in Southern Gaul to set up an emergency government in case the worse happens. Bear in mind that if Rome falls, all leading officials will undoubtedly be slaughtered by the Carthaginians, thus weakening the surviving government.
@Generals: Will you remain in Rome to help with the tactical defences, or evacuate to Massilia with the Senators? A counter-attack will be needed if Carthage conquers Rome, and as such we need to make sure there is a High Command should the capital fall.
The decision of each of you will greatly affect how future turns will play out, not to mention the coming battle. Choose carefully.
Maniacal Oct 01, 2007, 04:43 PM My force will atttack Carthage as planned. Perhaps it will cause them to withdraw their force.
Also, I don't like wiating for updates, but at least it will give me something to look forward too for Thanksgiving (I'm working Friday and Saturday evenings, it's going to be so freaking busy).
Captain2 Oct 01, 2007, 05:28 PM "bring in the cavalry, the Samaritans may be a threat but our capital is at stake, Rome is worth the entirety of Gaul
when I became the leader of Rome my main support came from our great military, the same military that my father and his father both gave their lives supporting and building and as a result I trust the Generals in charge of that army. those who stay to defend Rome will be heroes however those who decide to leave will not be shamed.
I will not allow myself to be the weak link in my family's chain and I will not allow Rome to fall without a fight, I shall stay in Rome however I urge the senate to leave. on the small chance that our great capital falls and I am slain I will not allow our empire to be weakened even worse by the destruction of all governing body, I ask in event of my death that Carthage be destroyed without mercy and that its ruling family be crucified above my grave"
Maniacal Oct 01, 2007, 05:47 PM I ask in event of my death that Carthage be destroyed without mercy and that its ruling family be crucified above my grave"
I'll be happy to grant you that wish, however I won't wait for you to die.
Captain2 Oct 01, 2007, 05:50 PM I'm happy either way but I'd prefer myself to be at the Crucifixion drinking myself silly
e350tb Oct 01, 2007, 08:02 PM Thank God I'm in Northern Gaul, looking greedily at Britannia.
I'll head straight down and show them Carthagians who's boss.
(Captain, update the English AAR, please!)
Captain2 Oct 01, 2007, 08:11 PM I'll get to it don't worry :p, the elections been keeping me away from any creative though for awhile and it ends on the 10th
I might even update before that
Maniacal Oct 01, 2007, 10:40 PM Thank God I'm in Northern Gaul, looking greedily at Britannia.
I'll head straight down and show them Carthagians who's boss.
Well, you'd better have a comfy chair, as you'll be looking at Britannia for a good looooong time before you get there.
I'd say you should, in the mean time, move your army south and maybe a bit east, in case the carthaginian army in Italy is not beaten or if the Sarmatians break through.
nodikus Oct 01, 2007, 11:08 PM Abandon Rome? You must be joking. I'll stay in the city to the end.
Lord Cal Oct 02, 2007, 12:34 AM Lord Cal at the most august consulars disposal if it is not to late to become a general?:D Also i suggest Sending the Senate out of Rome and sending the northen cavalry down while bringing as many units as possible into Rome also continueing the attack on Carthage is best as thou it will not proababl get them to withdraw their army from Italy it will be beneficial for moral and money to take and destroy carthagian armies and cities if at all possible.
Also gathering together a small contigency of troops to ambush disrupt the carthagian army will give more time to prepare and especially if it is cavalry just chip away at the army and sending a general or two our of rome is good so they can prepare for possible conter attack if the capital is taken I myself if possible will remain in Rome:king:
Maniacal Oct 02, 2007, 01:08 AM Welcome to the forum, and to a greater extent, this AAR, Lord Cal!

I'll translate that as 'staying in Rome' :)

General Calus it is. And sound advice - We won't be able to launch any form of ambush, but plans for a counter-attack are a good idea.

I would look at either Total War or the Total Realism forums for your technical problems, as personally speaking my re-installation of RTR involved a lot of luck and several attempts, so I'm not the one to ask.
Also, double-posting is also rather frowned upon here, and it confuses the devil out of me. There is an edit button :)

Hehe sorrya bout that didnt mean to and i found the edit button but couldn't figure out how to delite it :p
Edit: General Calus it is. And sound advice - We won't be able to launch any form of ambush, but plans for a counter-attack are a good idea.
I be liking that name General Calus Master Strategist, tacticition, warrior and gaurdian of Rome and the REpublic:p
Also If we dont ave any troops to disrupt the enemy send as many general units as we can and attack the army and try and kill of the enemy general and cav if you dont want to risk that just bring in as many troops to rome as possible and bring down northen cav
kan i be thinking this is the general consensus:
@Consular Captainus: Will you call upon the cavalry reserves of the northern army. Bear in mind this will weaken the Sarmatian front, and may not arrive in time to save Rome. In addition, will you evacuate yourself to Massilia to lead Rome from a safer haven? Yes he want Northen Cavalry brought down & is staying in Rome to fight
The Senate will evacuate to Massilia
@Generals: Will you remain in Rome to help with the tactical defences, or evacuate to Massilia with the Senators? A counter-attack will be needed if Carthage conquers Rome, and as such we need to make sure there is a High Command should the capital fall. Depending on number of generals in Rome take 1-2 out to plan for a counter attack should rome fall, Then gather as many troops as possible to Rome to defend hire mercanaries and I volunteer to lead the defense:D
Long Live the Repulic!!
Maniacal Oct 02, 2007, 11:59 PM Currently we only have 3 generals active, I think I'm in Sicily, Civvergus is in Iberia, and Tbus is in Gaul.
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 12:07 AM And the consular in rome? well that suks really bad how the hell did that happen i now we lost about 4 or so generals in iberia but..
Maniacal Oct 03, 2007, 01:18 AM Three generals who have forumer's names, not 3 generals in total.
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 01:26 AM 4 my friend 4 theres still General Calus gaurdian of rome and the republic hehe i will lead the def
EDIT: Also to solve the sarmation problem, we need to stop using infantry armies against them accept in defending settlements wer ethey need to come to us, other then that recruit armies composing only of cavalry a mix of Heavy cav and light cav so as to get best results..
Maniacal Oct 03, 2007, 12:41 PM Except that we have few calvalry centers (mostly built during the sarmation war) with most if not all of our calvalry now north of the alps, which we plan on withdrawing to the south.
Yeah, in other words, Kan's working on it.
Say, Kan, how IS the calvalry coming along?
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 03, 2007, 12:55 PM Most cavalry training is done in the north, obviously to allow them quick passage to the Sarmatian front. We have at least 6-9 cavalry divisions that were preparing to become a new Sarmatian army. They will be heading south to try and reach Rome in time.
Current status
Consular Captainus is remaining in Rome, and has ordered the cavalry from the north to rally and push south. He urges the Senators to leave
Senators
Generals Tbus, Nodikus and Calus remain in Rome, we are yet to hear from Sirtommygunnus, Ironmannus, Civvergus and Junglecuttus. PrinceScampey is sailing for Carthage.
We are still waiting the consensus of the Senators, and there is a very good reason I prefer to hear the individual decisions, as it will greatly affect the battle ;)
Captainus III and Nodikus II will command the defence of the city, while the cavalry reinforcements will be under the charge of Tbus II. All other Generals that are available (currently Calus) will command individual regiments during the defence.
Update still due for Saturday. I am looking forward to my first day off :D
sirtommygunn Oct 03, 2007, 03:16 PM yea im gonna stay in rome to help defend.
Darth_Pugwash Oct 03, 2007, 03:43 PM My fellow Senators! Why flee Rome - are you faithless? Do you not believe that Rome will survive this threat, that she will emerge triumphant over the Carthaginian menace? Do you not believe in mighty Rome?
If not, then flee! Flee like a dog to Gaul! Senator Pugwashius for one will be remaining in Rome, and urges all true Romans to do the same!
:D
Looking forward to the update. :)
steviejay Oct 03, 2007, 04:18 PM I'll stay in Rome and help defend the realm, and when we win, we can loot the homes of the senators who fled.
And can we not make decisions when there's football on the tv? ;)
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 03, 2007, 04:20 PM Ooh curses, the real reason behind no updates has been uncovered :(
Maniacal Oct 03, 2007, 04:40 PM You're delaying the update becuase of a SPORT?
Anyone who doesn't respond should be the people relocating.
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 05:59 PM lol, well we need when carthage soldiers are lying dead at our walls to completely refurbish our army and their training facilities, always in RTW i have had a cavalry army in every theatre to easily reinforce and destroy infantry armies, so what i think we need to do for the north which i think is already being done is;
build the neccasery buildings for maintaining several cavalry armies against the sarmations and possibly build 2-3 and after all are built send them simultainiosly up into the alps with them we can possibly push all sarmation armies back reinforce our armies there then establish 1 of the cavarly armies near Iuvam and the other 2 out further to deal with any possible offensives until carthage has been dealt with then we can put our full reasources in destroying the sarmations now i will not be wise to take any settlements of theirs until Northern europe is secure properly and we have made a good oucome in the Greek Civil war then we can move on their cities, also while we are securing everything possibly releasing several cav armies on sarmation lands to pillage it and destroy their armies like they did to us.
Now the main reason i like cav so much is i always use it and no most effects except that i havnt played Realism yet, not that i dislik infantry but those are the basic gaols we need to work for
1. Defeating the Carthage force in Italy.
2. Building structures to allow us to Maintain and build several pure cav armies & Taking Carthage completely out of...well the world.
3.a) Securing carthage and its lands after we take them then, sendiing an army or 2 down to the border with Egypt Incase they decide to attack us..
b) Then basically mobilising the roman army north sending the cav armies north throu the alps and forcing the sarmations back, possibly sending an army to land in southern greece and helping the macadonians as promised.
4. Securing Britannia and securing our border up there with the sarmations, send a rampaging cav army or 2 into sarmata before we gather troops for a full offensive once the Greek Civil war is over.
I hope that wasnt to confusing, Also after we defeat the carthage forcce in Italy build a fort with maybe half a stack in it to defend Central Italy, Also Has any one considered the force is marching for a city other then rome first?
Captain2 Oct 03, 2007, 06:02 PM interesting take on the situation.....
anyway, our main focus is to defend or retake Rome, Britannia may be out of our reach if the Senate and Consular are destroyed
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 06:06 PM Aye but We wont let rome fall and like i said they may make for another city first, but we will defend rome and win then seure our positon there then take carhtage while building cavarly armies for the Sarmation theatre, and also the best way to deal with the sarmation armies i think is with a mix of LIght cav and Heavy cav, with the HC in the centre carrying the charge while the Lc are on the wings hitting their Horse archers as they are fast enought to catch them, also having a couple units of Lc behind the Hc lines after tehy cahge is best for when the sarmations rout
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 03, 2007, 06:30 PM Anyone who doesn't respond should be the people relocating.
Good idea. For the record, Kan' Sharuminar IV will be staying in Rome. My House brought in this great age of the Republic, and we shall not be leaving the city we commanded from.
@Lord Cal: Excellent post, I'll use your advice when we return to the Sarmatian front. As long as we can hold them back (there's very little need to conquer Sarmatian lands at the moment) with minimal losses, then that front will be fairly safe. I'm more concerned with Carthage and helping Greece at the moment.
Edit: Nearly missed this:
Also Has any one considered the force is marching for a city other then rome first?
I guarantee that they will hit Rome.
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 06:32 PM Aye as am I If we just use teh cav armies to take down ther offensive armies then driving them back and possibly letting one or 2 loose on the sarmation lands to just hit any army they come across..
EDIT: Ok then as long as tha tis cleared..
EDIT: Also Kan wat website you get your Realism mod from>?
e350tb Oct 03, 2007, 07:08 PM I'm in charge of the cavalry, eh? Well, with the combonation of our legions and my cavalry, the Carthagians should be pushed back to....well...Carthage!
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 07:14 PM hehe, no they will run away as soon as tehy see me :D
EDIT: kan wat site did u get your mod from
EDIT: hehe i figured out one of my problems hehe i have RTW gold edition so i already ahve to fixed and patch 1.2 on my game and when i try downlaod it again things go a bit hay wire hehe
Maniacal Oct 03, 2007, 11:53 PM Isn't RTW Gold Edition already fairly patched up?
I know with the Eras pack it was patched all the way up to 1.8 already.
Why the bloody 'ell are you guys so keen on Britain anyways? There's no real value in it...
Lord Cal Oct 03, 2007, 11:56 PM ya Gold Edition is basically patched up except maybe the latest ones out, but the stupid realsim wont install and keeps saying the dowload fiel is corrpted

IronMan2055 Oct 04, 2007, 02:42 PM Based upon the decisions of the Senate I will either fight relocate, I humbly serve them and Rome.
steviejay Oct 04, 2007, 04:04 PM Why do we need to relocate friends? we don't need to run to fight the enemy, they will come to us.
Lord Cal Oct 04, 2007, 05:43 PM You may want to relocate incase Carthage does take rome and kills everyone so atleast we still have a government..
Maniacal Oct 04, 2007, 06:03 PM Shut up Cal, if they all die I'll be Emperor!
Raisin Bran Oct 04, 2007, 06:31 PM I'm my dad's son now aren't I?
Maniacal Oct 04, 2007, 07:10 PM I'm my dad's son now aren't I?
That either means you are going to stay in Rome, possibly causing someone to be "shot/stabbed in the back" or are going to go to Massilla and hope Rome falls so you can take over consulship?
Captain2 Oct 04, 2007, 07:17 PM Raisin ol buddy.... you wouldn't stab a consular with glasses on would ya?
*puts on thick glasses*
Lord Cal Oct 04, 2007, 09:06 PM hehe, ok all senators stay then i will do a favour fo scampy and kill you all if you don't die except teh Consular of course:D

Maniacal Oct 04, 2007, 09:45 PM Wait, we have glasses? I thought those weren't invented yet.
e350tb Oct 04, 2007, 10:05 PM They haven't.
Lord Cal Oct 04, 2007, 10:21 PM Well he porbably put some sharp glass on his eys heehe

Lord Cal Oct 04, 2007, 11:17 PM ok all hail Consular Captainus for inventing th emost holy glassas..
Captain2 Oct 04, 2007, 11:21 PM see? keep me in power and i'll invent gunpowder
simply knowing what that is at this time period is mind boggling :p
Lord Cal Oct 04, 2007, 11:24 PM no i will gaurd you bak if you name me Cammander of the Entire roman army after urself heehe
Maniacal Oct 05, 2007, 01:32 AM see? keep me in power and i'll invent gunpowder
simply knowing what that is at this time period is mind boggling :p
If anyone kills Captain2 I will not only kill themn, but kill their family, and anyone even remotely related to them.
Hell, I'll kill their entire civilization if I have to.
EDIT: We have everything we need to make black powder.

Kan' Sharuminar Oct 06, 2007, 07:07 AM Heart of the Republic Volume II
A Rome: Total War AAR
Part Three: The Battle of Rome I
203 BC
The Carthaginian Army wasted no time in making their intentions clear. They had not come to terrorise Italy, nor to conquer the provinces, but to sack and destroy Rome. Their soldiers only looted the towns on the way to the Republic’s capital in order to gather more provisions for the attack. There was only minimal resistance from the Roman garrisons - not nearly enough to repulse or even slow the Carthaginians down.
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4936/005ew0.jpg
The Carthaginian landings
The day after Consular Captainus had been notified of the landings, he called the Senate together. As he explained the situation, it became very clear how dire a predicament they were all in, and that this could very well be the last Senate meeting in Rome for some time. In an impassioned speech, he urged his fellow governors and generals to relocate to Massilia, where they could take over control of the Republic should Rome fall.
Most of the Senators agreed to their leaders request, leaving Rome as soon as possible. A few remained - most notably the leaders of the Houses of StevieJey and Sharuminar, who remained to defend their legacies. Of the Generals, most refused to leave. They would fight in Rome’s defence, and to the death if need be. Combined, they formed a small, but powerful cavalry reserve for Rome’s defence.
They would not be the only divisions left to defend the city. Rome may not hold any army, but the Elite Guard had been based there for twenty years. They were the most well-trained soldiers in the Republic, forming the main police force of Rome, as well as being the personal body-guard unit for the Consular. They would be the main force to counter the Carthaginians, under the command of Nodikus II. Alongside them would be a small militia reserve of soldiers taken from volunteers in the city - the decision of the Generals to remain had inspired them to remain while most citizens evacuated Rome with the Senators.
And Captainus had one further trick up his sleeve. He had dispatched messengers to northern Italy, with orders for all cavalry reserves there to combine and move for Rome as quickly as possible. Seeing as this had been done before the Carthaginians had even arrived, it was hoped that they would arrive in time for the defence of Rome. Given the size of the enemy force, even their contribution may not be enough. However, with most of the government relocated at Massilia, Captainus could be assured that the Republic would survive, should Rome fall.
It was nearly a week before the Carthaginian army was sighted on the eastern outskirts of the capital. Advance units pushed forward and burned the outlying settlements and farmland, though they had long-since been abandoned. Rome’s militia reserve quickly manned the walls, along with Captainus and the generals, who watched the Carthaginian’s main force come into sight. Siege weapons, towers and rams were spotted - apparently the enemy were not intending to starve Rome, but to launch an assault as soon as possible. And this was just one part of the Carthaginian army - another force, comprising mostly of their cavalry and heavy infantry, were swinging round to the southern gate.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/9852/003ik3.jpg
The sun had set by the time the Carthaginians had completed their movements, allowing the Roman leaders a brief hope that the battle would not begin until the next day. It was not to be, as several units moved towards the city - archers, and ballistae. Easily in range of the Roman militia units, the enemy suffered heavy losses under continuous arrow fire. They were not attacking to weaken the Roman defences however, but to launch flaming ammo into the city itself. It was an attack designed purely to lower Roman morale - houses were alight and the Carthaginians were showing that they could afford any casualties. The battle had begun, and Rome was already burning…
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 06, 2007, 07:13 AM Here's the reasoning behind posters deciding to stay in Rome or not:
The Consular is fairly obvious, as it's going to give troops a morale boost, at the expense of his life should they lose. He also called on the cavalry from the north, which may have repercussions in this battle, and against the Sarmatians.
The Generals remaining means that each one will be represented on the battle with a generals unit (with the exception of Nodikus, as he's commanding the battle behind the scenes). Tbus and Calus are in the northern cavalry reinforcements, so won't be represented unless they make it in time. This gives us a troops boost, but again, at the expense of their lives if they fall in battle.
The result of so many generals staying means we have the militia reserves, inspired to volunteer by their commanders courage. This is just a few sword and archer reserves. Cannon fodder, really.
Most of the Senators left Rome, thus giving us a Plan B, should the battle be lost. Those that did stay, give the troops a small morale boost, knowing that their leaders remain to fight. If Rome falls, then so do they.
Next update will be Tuesday!
Lord Cal Oct 06, 2007, 09:05 PM OK kan but i hope the cav and i get there in time with Tbus or we miss out on the fun :D
EDIT: wat website u use kan to download the realism from?

Is it too late to join?
I could be some anonymous roman serving in the milita, rewarded with a post of something because of my bravery in the battle against the cruel carthagians.. :mischief:
Lord Cal Oct 19, 2007, 07:20 PM lol  pobably could be
Maniacal Oct 19, 2007, 07:24 PM It's never too late to join.
Welcome aboard!
Congratulations! You're going to be the first man to scale the wall! (Behind a few others)
Lord Cal Oct 19, 2007, 07:25 PM dont u mean the first man at the gate?
Maniacal Oct 19, 2007, 07:52 PM Nah, that's harder to pass off as heroic.
Lord Cal Oct 20, 2007, 01:43 AM I'd count it heroic if he stood at the gate of rome (Ouside while its locked:lol:) and told the carthagians to go jump in a river and drown
Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 01:53 AM Sorry, but he's gonig straight to Carthage with me.
You can stand outside of hte gates of rome, or just taunt them from the walls.
Lord Cal Oct 20, 2007, 01:54 AM no i will ride up from behind and start cutting some throats
Domitius Oct 20, 2007, 07:21 AM Sounds good,
Ill skip the heroic part then
PrinceScamp - my loyalty lies with you :)
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 20, 2007, 01:05 PM  I shall return!
Hopefully tomorrow, though I do need to buy a walking cane first.
Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 03:18 PM You can still lead the attack on the walls of Carthage. If you survive and have sucessfuly taken the walls, (And I have no reason to doubt that you will) I'll give you an extra 20 virgins once we sack Carthage.
Domitius Oct 20, 2007, 03:48 PM Now we speak same language,! :D
Give me a Cohort and i'll take the gatehouse within an hour. Rest should be piece of cake..
Any idea how strong the remaining carthagian force is?
Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 03:53 PM No diea. Kan hasn't said anything about how strongly Carthage is garrisoned. Hopefully not very well or at least with no reinforcements within 2 turns distance.
Domitius Oct 20, 2007, 05:58 PM Okay, hopefully they aren't expecting a counterattack, hoping every remaining legionarie would head for Rome.
How many troops do you command?
Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 07:28 PM KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAN
I want DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 20, 2007, 07:30 PM Details of that and your army is very simple, given that it actually exists on the map. I shall post a screenie tomorrow for you :)
Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 07:33 PM I don't want to wait until tomorrow! I'm bored to death NOW!
EDIT: I think I just gave myself heartburn too.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 20, 2007, 07:41 PM As requested General, forgive my insolence. We have here a double picture - on top is your army, excepting one division that will be occupied by your own cavalry unit. The bottom shows the Carthaginian homeland at this time.

Maniacal Oct 20, 2007, 09:27 PM Thank you scribe Kan.
The Carthaginian Cities look weakly garrisoned.
We attack Carthoago as planned, from the docks (east).
Lord Cal Oct 21, 2007, 01:37 AM does this mean we are getting the finshed battel of rome tomorow?
Maniacal Oct 21, 2007, 01:54 AM Part of it anyways.
steviejay Oct 21, 2007, 04:16 AM Kan, if you don't post an update, I'll continue to post pics in the FM08 thread of the whooping I'm giving Celtic ;)
Domitius Oct 21, 2007, 04:33 AM Looks to me like we can expect a counterattack from Utica, once Carthage is under siege. Shouldn't be a problem though.
Maniacal Oct 21, 2007, 04:59 AM I'd rather face them on the field than in a city, but do not want to delay laying siege to Carthago.
EDIT: 2001 views!
Also, Utica may do nothing, which is why I want to attack from the east/docks, as I will be further away. I considered landing south and attacking from the river/bridge, but they could still easily reach us via another bridge upriver.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 21, 2007, 08:14 AM I can't guarantee it for today, but I will do my best. My problem is that if I get frustrated writing an update, I simply give it up for lost and glare at the AAR folder for a few days until I pluck up the courage to start over. Today I'll just take it slowly, and take a few more breaks. I know what happens in this next one, I just need to get it down on paper. Word processor. Whatever.
Kan, if you don't post an update, I'll continue to post pics in the FM08 thread of the whooping I'm giving Celtic ;)
Bought FM08 today, your threats have no meaning to me :mwaha:
Domitius Oct 21, 2007, 08:18 AM Take your time :)
D'Artagnan59 Oct 21, 2007, 07:21 PM Can I join as a General?
IronMan2055 Oct 23, 2007, 05:11 PM And besides all of that your comic hasn't been updated in ages and you apparentyl haven't been on DeviantART for 16 weeks.
Maniacal Oct 24, 2007, 12:13 AM Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaan
Domitius Oct 24, 2007, 01:45 AM Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaan

steviejay Oct 24, 2007, 02:46 AM heh he's got FM08 now..... expect lengthy delays
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 24, 2007, 12:34 PM I have new cane, new pocket watch, new games and have successfully learnt how to tie a bow-tie. I suppose I can't use any more excuses.
Starting update.
Captain2 Oct 24, 2007, 12:42 PM if you want another excuse you could add monocle and tophat to that list
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 24, 2007, 12:44 PM Have the top hat, don't need a monocle :p
Captain2 Oct 24, 2007, 01:20 PM well the monocle is almost mandatory with the cane, tophat and pocket watch
then you can talk about how the Huns are a menace
sirtommygunn Oct 24, 2007, 03:24 PM no dont get a top hat get a PINEAPPLE-top-hat
IronMan2055 Oct 24, 2007, 07:26 PM I suppose I can't use any more excuses.

:P
steviejay Oct 25, 2007, 02:57 AM it's been so long since we've had an update i've forgotten what our plan is. Anyone want to summaries it for me?
Maniacal Oct 25, 2007, 02:58 AM KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAN
This is the worst time to leave us hanging!
Domitius Oct 25, 2007, 07:22 AM As far as i see, this is were we stand:
carthage is besieging Rome, we already saw part one of the battle.
Generals:
-Princescampey (and me) are sailing for Carthage with an army.
-Consular Capitainus is in Rome. He has called for the cavalry of the northern army.
-Tommygunnus, Tbus, Nodikus and Calus are in Rome too. Nodikus and Calus in charge of the deffenses, Tbus in charge of the cavalry.
-Ironman is in Marseille ready to lead the counterattack should the deffenders of Rome fail.
Senators:
-Pugwash and Steviejay are in Rome praying to the gods.
-Raisinus Brainus is in Marseille with the rest of the senate.
-Volumus is chilling in Gaul :)
Think thats it. Please correct me if im wrong :)
EDIT: Ironman is a general.
EDIT2: Tommygunnus was apparently a general too..
EDIT3: I forgot senator Volumus - my apologies
steviejay Oct 25, 2007, 07:43 AM Senators:
-Tommygunnus, Pugwash and Steviejay are in Rome praying to the gods.
BAH, the only praying the Gods will hear from me will be for MORE of the Punic Dogs to try to take on the walls of Rome so that we can cripple their inferior army. Soon, the Carthaginian Army will be filled with old men, young boys and infirm women, if that is not the case already!!
Domitius Oct 25, 2007, 01:57 PM Or, you could just say thx for the update
kidding - Hopefully all the deffenders of Rome are as fierce as you
IronMan2055 Oct 25, 2007, 02:00 PM I'm a general now, no idea where I'm assigned though...
sirtommygunn Oct 25, 2007, 02:15 PM i do believe im a general now...
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 25, 2007, 04:53 PM  You hero Domitius, a very handy guide.
I am honestly working on the update as best I can but have very little time to myself (It's 11pm here, and this is the first I've been back in the house since 9am). If we're extremely lucky it'll be done tomorrow morning, but I think Saturday evening is most likely. The main problem is getting the pics though :)

I do belive senator Volumus is chilling in Gaul.
Domitius Nov 03, 2007, 03:44 PM Kan, you are killing me :suicide: I just cant wait any longer
Kan' Sharuminar Nov 03, 2007, 04:27 PM I am really, really sorry, and this is bothering me as well, as I am looking forward to the next updates as much as everyone (I write on the fly, and most new developments are as a surprise to me as to readers). I've been exceptionally busy recently, and not at all in a good way personally.
I assure you I am thinking about this every day, and keep intending to update. When I get going, all will be well :)
Edit: The fact that I haven't been able to respond to StevieJey's end-result in FM08 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6081283&postcount=28) should hopefully prove my point - I actually haven't been able to start even that game yet
Maniacal Nov 04, 2007, 12:12 AM /me throws a tumbleweed at Kan
steviejay Nov 04, 2007, 07:31 AM Heh you slacker Kan ;)
Only kidding. I think the only reason I can still continue to play computer as much is because I've neglected my girlfriend, but I buy her pretty things, so it balances out ;)
Lord Cal Nov 06, 2007, 01:32 AM  And yes i funally got realsim to work haha Screw u Carthage hahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahha i think im alright now..no..HHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH..now i fine

Maniacal Nov 07, 2007, 03:32 PM KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAN
Update before this turns into a spam thread;
Lord Cal Nov 07, 2007, 11:45 PM I can help with that
steviejay Nov 08, 2007, 02:52 AM It has already :p
But what is spam to some is comrade-like-banter to raise the spirits before the final battle of Roma ;)
Domitius Nov 08, 2007, 05:44 AM Im not even there, idont need to boost my spirit :mischief:
Maniacal Nov 08, 2007, 05:31 PM Maybe not, but...
*whips Domitius* ROW FASTER!
Lord Cal Nov 08, 2007, 11:18 PM *General Calus walks to walls of Roma takes of pants moons cathagians *
Kan' Sharuminar Nov 09, 2007, 06:30 AM Right. I'm guessing you all didn't see this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6115713&postcount=169), so there it is linked for your viewing pleasure. In addition, my graphic card has decided, as of two nights ago, to pack it all in, so I can't even play the game at the moment. At best I'll have it sorted tomorrow, at worst I may need to fix it completely. I have wanted a new graphics card for a while, so maybe this is a good excuse :D
Please stop spamming the thread like above. I am very honoured by the desire for this to continue, but continuous demands for updates actually have the opposite effect by frustrating me when I know I can't have it out for another day or so. Just let this lie - or have proper discussions about the story itself. I don't mind the odd spammage, but the more there is the more difficult it is for me to sort through it all to find the information I need for the next update. That helps noone :)
If you absolutely must know about how the next update is coming along, or just want to demand it some more, just PM me rather than putting it up here for the dozenth time.
Lord Cal Nov 09, 2007, 10:03 PM ok, were srry :(
Lord Cal Nov 21, 2007, 02:40 AM So...wats everyone up too?
rabidveggie Dec 10, 2007, 10:32 PM Damn I really wanted to take part since this is such an awesome story, but at the moment it looks like the forum is dead. Kan finished his last AAR though with that WWI game so I'll trust he'll finish it when he regains interest and has a lighter schedule. Wouldn't want a bland it feels like this is a chore story.
Maniacal Dec 11, 2007, 12:17 AM Actually his graphics card is giving him problems and he is unable to run RTW very well.
rabidveggie Dec 11, 2007, 09:27 AM Ah yes now I recall reading something of the sort. I know how annoying that can be. In my Rome file on the laptop for some reason it takes 15 minutes to load a battle, but hlaf the time it loads in like 1 so its hit or miss.
Kan' Sharuminar Dec 11, 2007, 07:32 PM Damn I really wanted to take part since this is such an awesome story, but at the moment it looks like the forum is dead. Given that you mentioned my WW1 story, I must reply :D
My video card is effectively dead, and needs to be replaced (or at best, de-dusted). There is no way this is going to happen until after the new year, particularly given real-life time constraints and money (I really want a new graphics card).
This AAR will be returned to, as I love it too much. So will my Silent Hunter III one, for that matter, but I fear that at the moment it will suffer from the same graphics problems, and I have little interest in resuming it at present. So be patient, and you have my apologies, and of course the AAR I can do in the meantime :)
And please simply PM me asking about what's going on with this AAR. I really do get easily confused when there are dozens of posts between updates when I'm trying to find one post.
rabidveggie Dec 11, 2007, 09:42 PM Awesome I would have been sad if you ended it right in the middle of the siege of Rome :D
When you eventually resume it I'd like to be a Senator, mostly because the generals seem to have a low life expectancy, plus I look good in a Toga. ;)
Lord Cal Dec 12, 2007, 01:51 PM Dum De Dum, Can't wait 'till the new year for 1 molre reason :D
Hitti-Litti Dec 13, 2007, 09:04 AM ^^
