We started out small. My first settlement dropped right in the center of 5 ivory resources. This game is modded a bit: upped combat experience to 2/4/5/6; raging barbarians; road mvmt 4; no immunity from propaganda. Regent level. 8 random civs.

We established our empire, large but isolated, then made contact with the Greeks. I built the Pyramids but lost out on most other wonders until Sun-Tsu's Art of War, after which I went to Monarchy. The Lighthouse triggered my golden age in 500 AD.

About 1200 AD I made contact with Zululand, and found how far behind we were and through them made contact with the rest of the world.

In 1400, I started Smiths and Wall Street. My competition built the other cultural wonders. I did get Sistine Chapel, however.

In 1475, Babylon was attacked my friends the Greeks, but the Greeks didn't approach me for help. Babylon did, and I joined the war in an alliance. I was making strides against Greece, but Babylon and Greece settled. I continued to punish Greece. Babylon imposed a trade embargo with the Iroquois against me for the duration of the war. Greece fell in 1550. I had control of the continent.

We were barely keeping up technologically. I focused on infrastructure and did another major colonization of a vacant continent. Babylon contacted me about forming a MPP in 1765. The Iroquois attacked Persia. Babylon allied with the Iroquois and proceeded to get attacked by Persia which drew me into the fray. I took one city, then focused on Persia's gem resources and landed a major force there in 1789.

Newton's University built in Rheims-- 1776

I took Kandahar by 1780 after some fierce fighting. Resistance was intense, but I made entertainers out of everyone in the city. Persia sued for peace in 1785, which I accepted and the resistance immediately stopped. Babylon now hates me.

We enter the industrial age. I focus on Scientific Method. I buy Industrialization and Democracy from Rome. I start building the Iron Works, Battlefield Medicine, Universal Sufferage, and Theory of Evolution. By the time I get Theory of Evolution I've got Refining and in 1820. I get Replaceable Parts and Combustion from Theory of Evolution.

In 1820 I change to Democracy, and get all confused about corruption, but that sorts itself out.

We're at 1845. Bablyon is still at war with Persia. My city there is established with a Harbor and Temple built by rushing. The Iroquois are acting twitchy and very demanding -- "We will allow your puny empire to survive if you give us Steel and Replaceable Parts." "That's it. Goodbye." I tell Hiawatha.

Hiawatha sends his fleet of one ironclad and 5 frigates over to my coast doing a bit of sabre rattling trying to blockade. I've got harbors in every coastal city, and like I care. He starts moving galleons around my coast on the other continent. Troop movements on my border with him. My privateers sink 2 frigates and an English Man 'o War that also was pestering me. My first destroyer hit the water and I sent it up there. Hiawatha soiled his drawers and went home. I'm preparing a force of 30 infantry drawn from city garrisons and sending them to the other continent. They'll be there in two turns.

Thinking about ending the trade embargoes I have against Persia with Rome and Germany, and imposing it on Babylon. I've got to wear them down culturally to prevent them from getting a cultural victory.
