View Full Version : Vassal has resource redlined for trading, is that a bug?

i was doing a test to answer some questions that came up on the forum, so i created a colony on a continent i captured from montezuma much earlier in the game. that continent has my one and only source of coal, but i thought i'd be able to demand it because the civilopedia says "The master has the right to demand access to any resource under vassal control, even if it is their only one. However, there is one catch. If the vassal refuses to pay this tribute, the agreement immediately ends and a state of war automatically results between the two parties."

but justinian (my colony leader) had coal redlined as "surely you must be joking". he actually has a lot of things redlined, most of them i think are because his cities have Sid's Sushi and Mining Inc in them. but most of them i have my own so i don't care about. the coal i care about! thankfully it was only a test, and i'd already planned to reload for the actual game, justinian's existence was just temporary.

i wondered if it was a colony-only issue. i loaded a save where i was at war with brennus to check the "vassal but not newly created colony" case. i took his capitulation, and at that time he had no cities with corporations. he was willing to trade me his coal but the option for me to give him coal was redlined as "we would have nothing to gain". that makes sense, that's their usual behavior. then i gifted him a city with Mining Inc, and bingo, coal was redlined as "surely you must be joking". at that point, he did want to trade for my coal, to use it for the corp.

i don't blame them for wanting to keep the coal, but they're my vassals, are they supposed to be able to redline resources in a trade? particularly resources that i don't have myself? i was sure i'd be able to demand it, knowing that he might say "no let's go to war". but i don't even get the option to make the demand, because coal is redlined so i can't put it in his side of the trade window at all.

if it's intended behavior, not a bug, then the civilopedia needs to be rewritten. but it sure smells buggy to me. he's cheating! he's avoiding the "should i go to war over this or not?" question by preventing me from making the demand at all, the brat.

Well, the code supports your conclusion, so I can only assume that it's deliberate. I wonder if it's a good design choice? Should vassals be able to deny you access to Corporation resources? Personally, I don't think they should be able to deny you any resources (the "No Gain" ones either). What if I want them to give me their Iron so I can trade it to someone else?

Vassel shouldn't have anything redlined, not even cities. It defeats the purpose of having vassels in the first place.
