Do you think they are worth the (Usually) extra $10? (In USD)

If so, why?

The only ones I can think of are Stranglehold (Includes a Blu-Ray of the movie) and World in Conflict (History Channel DVD on Berlin Wall, piece of the Berlin Wall, and a full 10-day trial for your friends)

Personally, I think Collector's Editions are really lacking in terms of extras. There may be the Behind the Scenes stuff, but that's about it.

I think Collector's Editions should have

A. Exclusive maps/units/weapons
B. An exclusive mission or something of that sort
C. Deleted stuff, like deleted cutscenes, deleted story elements, etc.
D. Some nice action figures or something to that extent.

I mean, Halo 3's Legendary Edition looks great, but the helmet is crap. You can't even put it on a cat. I mean, if it costs more, but is at least big enough to make your dog look like a failed Master Chief clone experiment, its worth it.

Yeah, a figurene would be nice, and definately a map or referecne cards (more than just a ref card for controls, maybe like in Red Orchestra (if you buy RO in the store, which I didn't) you get ref cards about weak spots on tanks and maps of the maps), oh, and a manual. Not one of those useless manuals on the disk, but one you can actually hold in your hands.

Expanded history or manual is also nice.

I don't want a big metal box or one of those new plastic DVD boxes for any of my games, I want to be able to fold up the box. (Except in the case of Bioshock with it's steal case, it doesn't look too big.)

The special edition fo Bioshock however looks like a really good example.

I got a nice hard cover art book, mousepad, dvd with some behind the scenes stuff, and a unique in game pet when I bought the WoW:The Burning Crusade collectors edition. Rather worth it I think. :)

The Halo 3 helmet is meant to be a case for the discs.

One is Age of Mythology, which came with a making of DVD, a soundtrack CD, a Minotaur figurine, a book about Mythology (Greek, Roman, Viking, British and Charlemagne), a movie size poster and some smaller posters. I also have a Limited Edition of Dreamfall, which came with an artbook, a soundtrack CD and The Longest Journey.

Yeah, an actual piece, authenticated by a German company, Staatswappen der DDR.

I bought for $5 the collectors addition upgrade for Guild Wars, it got me some weapons that I rarely used. Usually, collector's additions are bad. I got the CIV IV deluxe edition or whatever as a gift; the soundtrack was kind of nice, but nothing in the set warranted the higher price, imo. Usually I just stick with regular editions.

I like the cute big figurine they give with Bioshock's Colector's Edition. :)

I wish I'd gotten the Collectors Edition of AoM :( Except I didn't know there was one until now.

EDIT: Just checking FutureShop's site, it's $149 CAD for the Legendary Edition of Halo 3.

And $69 for the regular version fo Halo 3. Overpriced FTL.

Not too mention it's probably cheaper in the states since our dollar is at par. Stupid freaking price unequality.

Obviously, whether a "Collector's Edition" is worthwhile depends on what you're getting.

Personally, I can't think of many things that would make one worth getting. Extra stuff in the box - soundtrack CDs, posters, concrete - are things I can also get elsewhere, so it's not so special. Fancy packaging can be kinda cool, but not usually worth $10. Demo discs are neat... until the previewed games actually come out.

The closest thing to a collector's edition anything I have is Civilization Chronicles, which is cool because it includes every installment of the game, but mostly because of the bonus DVD and booklet. The card game is alright, I guess, but I don't have anyone to play it with. :rolleyes:

No it's not really Canada's fault, half the large buisnesses (at least) are owned by Americans, and they are just not changing their prices (for the most part).

I've never seen a Collector's Edition I thought was worth the price, though that doesn't mean it will never happen. It's kind of like the two-disc movies: what I really care about is the movie itself. The best content, both in movies and games, is always included in the standard edition.

The problem with exclusive maps/content/weapons is that it looks like it should be in the Standard Edition - after all, it's part of the game, isn't it? Extra maps et. al. is already well established as expansion pack territory.

I want the Companion Cube to come with CE Orange Box if it ever comes out.

The only Collectors Edition I ever bought was Gothic 3. The map, making of and soundtrack were nice. The game was bad, but I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. So I basically paid 60 euros for a soundtrack, great deal.

Meh for games I'm truly looking forward to playing, yes. But generally I make it a rule not to get a collectors edition of things. Not after getting the collectors edition of Vanguard.

Those turrets freak me out. Seriously, a kiddie voice on a machine of death. Someone at Valve is a sadistic ba-----d

But back on topic: CE I usually only buy if I find good deals on them ( with a Fry's nearby, that happens often). I bought the Civ 4 special edition for 35$, the same price as the normal version was for ( surprisingly, they were out of normal editions, but had a ton of SE left). Otherwise, I dont care much for special editions. The mods that come out for most of modern games after the release more than beat whatever special content you can find in the CE, and I dont care for little figurines. The only CE I ever wanted for the extra content was perhaps AoM because of the stuff included in it ( As CH pointed out). The cases that come with the CE I dont care for, I store all my cd's in either sleeves or slim cd cases, or on a spindle. So in short, the CE has to be really good for me to shell out for it, otherwise ill buy the normal version, and still have just as much fun ( hopefully).

I HATE sleeves, I feel ripped off when I buy a game and the disk comes in a sleeve or, if I need the disk to play, a DVD case (Ex. Medieval 2: Total War).

Oblivion has a nice manual and a map in the regular version, but it came in a god damned SLEEVE!

I like the regular jewel cases best but the slim cases are both cheaper and thinner.

I hate sleeves also, as it means if you use the game alot it with get scratched. whats a jewel case?

Edit: I usually end up buying a collectors edition over a normal one, I'm a sucker for all the extra tat.

Jewel case is the plastic case ( the ones with a recesson for the cd with a little thing in the center to keep it in place). They're handy and all, but sleeves just work better for me as I have now close to 400 cd's of random things, meaning that a jewel case, being approximately..10mm, would give me a 4 meter high stack of cds ( im not even 2 meters tall, just for comparison). Sleeves work well in this case since I can slip the cd into it and just put it into a box, and I know I wont need like 20 boxes to keep all my cds

All my walls are filled already. This is why I keep the cd's in boxes....Ive got no room whatsoever ( although that second chair could go... ) But yeah, ive through of that and the only place would be above my bed, and I dont want anything hanging over my head while I sleep knowing how crappy the walls are around here.

I've only been seeing them in the last one or two years. They used to coem in the same-sized cardboard boxes. I don't understand why they switched. The DVD boxes aren't recyclable and you can't flatten them so they just sit there taking up a lot of space. Plus if you need the dvd in the drive, it's not the best thing to be taking them out of constantly.

We havent have the cardboard boxes in years. Phased em out years ago, I thought it was because Console games came in DVD boxes so they made it more uniform and more shelf-space in shops.

Yeah if its a collectors edition, some collectors editions are alot bigger then DVD cases like the Guild Wars ones I own.
I dont understand why they sometimes have cardboard round a DVD case, like with Spartan Total warrior and its collectors edition. Only extra thing was the cardboard cover :confused:
