Well, since there are a lot of fans of Paradox games on this board, I decided to inform you on their announcement today.

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324871

Q2, 2008 they will release Europa Universalis: Rome. It's supposed to build on their former EU games and will thus be a total different game then RTW. It will focus more on grand strategy.

Some alpha screenshots:

Any thoughts?

I would have preferred a setting, somewhere between the fall of Rome and the begin of the Renaissance, and i still feel that 3D graphics are pretty pointless for a game like EU or Civ.
That being said, i look forward to reading more about it!

Another strategy game about the Roman Empire? :ack:

I agree with you Till; it would have been nice with some focus on the Dark Ages.

Well, someone could probably make a mod that includes the dark ages.

Combine this with RTW and I could die happily (after having played it for some time of course). (and still figuratively speaking, I have no interest in dying within at least 60 years)

I always thought this would be inevitable, but still interesting nonetheless. Will be interested to see how this goes.

I had a thought, how is it going to be different from EUIII?

dammit.... I was really hoping for Hearts of Iron 3 when I heard a new game would be announced

however if a new game had to be released I was hoping for either Cold War, Modern or Rome so I suppose one of those came true

It will use the EU III engine, but it will also use elements already tried out in other Paradox games, like a simplified POP's system from Victoria.

However it's a bit early to discuss the gameplay, as there is not much information available at the moment.

I'd also presume that the reason it only goes up to the formation of the Empire and not onwards to the fall is because they know that anybody who gets a sizeable nation in any Paradox game becomes unstoppable :p

The graphics from those initial screenshots do look a lot better than in EU3, so it's good to see it evolving (and hopefully perfected for HoI3). I still prefer the 2D of the older games though.

I wonder if you can import this into Crusader Kings?

That would be awesome, you create a nation in Ancient Times and slowly conquer the world.

Sounds like another game we all know.

Crusader Kings and EU:Rome work on different engines so it won't work. I suppose if EU:Rome went up to the same time period as EU3 you would be able to import into that.

According to the paradox staff we can expect a demo (always nice). And it seems we may even expect a first beta AAR by the end of the week.

Anyone gonna buy it? Or pre-ordered it already?

EDIT: I forgot, the release date is somewhere in the middle of april.

How so? Other than the same setting and a similar world view.

It's completly different. To name one, there is no tactical layer in EU:Rome. Only grand strategy. And if you know the EU series a bit, you will know that they are very different from the Total War series.

By the way, the first beta AAR is up and running. If you want to know how the game plays, check it out!

An interactive AAR, very daring for a game still unreleased :goodjob:

will there be a demo? The EU3 demo disappointed me so I never got it, but this one looks really cool from the betas, but I'm still not sure.

Perhaps shortly, I think the Beta people are still having a go at it, however.

There will be a demo, but only shortly after the game has gone gold.

I was right. A small demo covering the Second Punic War has been released.

Excellent! Thanks Berrie.
I you tried it, do tell what you think about it. I don't have the time to try it out yet.

And some extra info:

Setting: The Second Punic War (536-566 AUC)

Playable countries: Rome and Carthage

Story: Rome and Carthage fight it out for mastery of the Western Mediterranean. Some of the greatest commanders of the ancient world will fight for mastery, the Great Hannibal and Publius Cornelius Scipio could be the commander that brings you victory.

- Play either Rome or Carthage in the war that ushered in a new era. Can you as Rome bring Carthage to its knees and take the first steps to Pax Romana, or as Carthage change the course of history forever and make a new power mistress of the Mediterranean?

- But this isn't all about Rome and Carthage, all other countries in the Mediterranean are also involved so the full options for diplomacy and intrigue are available.

- The great historical leaders are present on the battlefield

- Manage your trade to supply the sinews of war

- Watch the loyalty of your nobles or run the risk of defeat due to civil war.

Europa Universalis: Rome is shipping to stores in North America on April 15, 2008 and Europe on April 18, 2008. To read more about the game go to: http://www.paradoxplaza.com/Rome.

How good does it seem to be? Does it have the potential to be a great game like EU2? Because if it is a game with great potential, I know what game to buy when I get a new laptop.

I played the demo a couple of times and I don't know what to say really. I'm not an Europa Universalis veteran, so I can't compare with the previous titles, but I didn't really knew what to do. I also didn't feel immersed into the game. I'm still getting used to the character system and the way research works...

For now, it's wait and see for me...

There is a way to nominally switch your country in the Rome demo. Bring up the console and enter the country TAG you want to use. The computer still controls the country, but you can look around the country.

EDIT: Victoria and Crusader Kings are better.

I attempted to play the demo on my laptop (intel chipset) and it worked! Perfectly, no blue screen....Although I quit soon after, I have little intrest in the Romans and the Carthaginians to be honest.

How do you bring up the console? F12 didn't work for me...

I can't play the demo. :(

It downloads just fine, it installs just fine, it seems everything is just fine, but when I launch it, it tells me "d3dx9-35.dll" was not found and it won't start.

Looking on the comments on GameSpot, it seems almost everyone posting a comment has this problem.

Simply downloading (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_35) the dll (and placing it into the game's directory) worked for me.

Bought the game, and I'm just going to delve straight in. I looked at the first two tutorials, but they were of the 'non-interactive, wad-of-text' sort that bores me instantly. Off to be Rome, and if anybody who has played the game has any hints or advice on how to play I would be delighted.

Two things: patch and fix the research bug (you pratically can't research a thing).

Look at the paradox forum for more information.
