View Full Version : Best of DYOS
Thorvald of Lym Oct 03, 2007, 06:12 PM The 'tradition' of the DRAW Your Own Story thread has now reached its tenth installment. In homage to what is quickly developing cult status, I have created this gallery where the veteran DYOSers can exhibit their past cartoons without fear of plotholes or deadlines.
Did your comic have a deeper message the other forumers missed? Was there a secret brilliance behind the stupidity? The floor is yours in Best of DYOS: come on in and talk about the Good Ol' Days!
Thorvald of Lym Oct 03, 2007, 06:19 PM http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7619/dyos0lx3.jpg
This was my first cartoon ever for DYOS. I had discovered DYOS 5 back in July and had followed it with anticipation, but it took me so long to finish it was over before I could begin. Lucky enough for me, DYOS 6 was still below 20 pages, and I thought I could fit myself in without causing too much disturbance.
At the time of my first few comics, my goal was speed and quality (and humour, if at all possible). Since the plot was advancing rapidly when I joined, I tried to keep the comics as short as possible while at the same time progressing my character.
Stylesrj Oct 03, 2007, 07:39 PM http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/stylesrj/Comic.jpg
My very first DYOS comic. Look at how tiny my font was.
It started off with me and Stylesjl arguing in the comic. This got Stylesjl into DYOS. My very first post was actually this comic, I found the storyline very witty and funny and I liked it a lot. Of course, I had a reasonable idea and I kept it throughout most of the story, but I was trying to interact with everyone later on that I made myself not really like and had to diverge from the plot to deal with new situations.
Of course, this does not reveal what the whole argument was between me and my brother. You'll have to find out in DYOS 5
Perfection Oct 03, 2007, 08:11 PM I'm especially proud of this one, my only regret is the mischaracterization of Plot, which I han't the privilage to read sufficiently and truely appreciate him.

choxorn Oct 03, 2007, 08:45 PM This is my 2nd comic ever, in DYOS 9. It was urging people to stop arguing over dumb things and get back on track of the story (at the time, there was much hostility between Stylesrj and everybody else, especially CivGeneral, which later got worse), while being funny at the same time. It also showed that I do not draw the Arbiter very well.
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/8765/dyos15cr2.jpg
Obviously, this comic did very little.
Thorvald of Lym Oct 03, 2007, 09:29 PM Ahhhh yes, the Brotherhood of MOD. A one-hit wonder if ever there was one!
This next picture was my third-ever comic. Believe it or not, I was once funny. :p

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7034/dyos22bp7.jpg
The most important element of this cartoon is my willingness to admit my mediocracy. I had watched DYOS 5 drive itself into the ground because the posters adamantly refused to co-operate, and I was determined to be as flexible as possible.
I was both surprised and empowered to learn that a veteran found this very funny (Kan' Sharuminar, no less). I've often looked back on this comic to see why it was so enjoyable; I've tried, with varying success, to make future comics as good as this one. To this day, I consider a compliment from Kan to be the highest honour.

Anyway, here's a nice little gem from DYOS 5. It's CivGeneral tribute to MontyPython and as far as I know the only attempt made in DYOS at a musical. Enjoy. :)

This comic was a direct follow-up to my invasion of Scotland. I deliberately refrained from using any terminology that suggested my little kingdom was not up to speed on technological advancements. I was backwards, but not stupid.
This was also when I introduced the running gag of olive oil. I'd decided from story's start that until I possessed the Fridge of the Mods, I could not drink any generally recognized beverage (and this promise was broken only once). The choice of olive oil was inspired by reading an article in National Geographic.
The final panel highlights Bjørn's character well. I may be the man of attention, but it is often he who calls the shots. I suppose the relation between us is that of Cardinal Richelieu to Louis XIII... or maybe Jeeves to Wooster.

I knew that sooner or later I would need to get my hands on 'modern' technology if I was going to achieve anything in the story. I also knew I wanted to get my hands on Russia. So I devised this.
Tallied up, the Eastern Union consists of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Kazakhstan, and, of course, Russia.
This seems to be the one and only comic where I never put in any lines to divide the panels. Picture #4 is a rip-off of the intro sequence to the British comedy Dad's Army (complete with revised lyrics :p ).

Ingmar Bergman, 1918-2007. One of the greatest film/stage/opera directors of the past century, and possibly all time.
This cartoon dates back to DYOS 8. For some reason I was delayed, and it never saw the light of day. As you can see from this rather chaotic scene, the flames were scorching when I was inspired to make this, and only a few days later the thread was closed.
Points of interest:
- Bergman's picture frame is the border for the Viking diplomacy background in Civ2.

Thorvald of Lym Jul 22, 2008, 02:05 PM Any one you like, or have some background or such you'd like to elaborate on.
Speaking of which...
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/7825/dyos16ws3.png
I often inject cartoons with political commentary, but this was the first purely political piece I've done.
Ratko Mladić, a Bosnian Serb, was Chief of Staff of the VRS during the Bosnian War of '92-'95, during which time he organized the massacares of Sarajevo and Srebrenica. His political counterpart, Radovan Karadžić, was captured yesterday after 13 years in hiding. Like Karadžić, Mladić was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for genocide and war crimes, but a warrant is still out for his arrest.
Who knows? Maybe by this time next year they'll catch Ratko, on Rat-Catcher's Day.
The cartoon itself is a parody of the Vlasic Pickles label, ironic in that the Vlasic family was Croatian.
lord_joakim Jul 22, 2008, 05:06 PM I think this was an important point of DYOS history - the day that Thunderfall got shot.

Midway through DYOS 6, Captain Locke (a character from D.C. Simpson's Ozy and Millie; to be discussed in a later annotation) stumbled upon a secret Flying Circus base in South America. When this minor story arc began, Mjcommie was under mind control, the circumstances of which I have forgotten, and I originally planned to have Locke and part of the island garrison rise up against him (not Richtofen, as it became). However, within a handful of comics, Mjcommie returned to his 'right' mind and my planned story unravelled. What I thought was a straightforward objective was somehow interpreted as mutiny, leading to all-out war between the Red Baron and pirates.
Fortunately, it gave me an excuse to put Erwin Rommel in my cartoons.
People had been using Rommel and Montgomery as a running gag for some time, but I was quite disappointed in their execution. Two of the greatest military minds and most chivalrous generals of the Twentieth Century were treated like bickering schoolchildren. Thus, I made sure to highlight the professionalism in their rivalry, and according to Kan's feedback, to great success.
Final note: ColourYourFace is a parody of ColorYourWorld, a paint shop I once came across.

I've messed around with GIF animation before, but this was my first completed work.
When I originally released this, Canada had just gone through a federal election that saw incumbent prime minister Stephen Harper return to power. Liberal leader Stéphane Dion was... not decisively disgraced, but announced soon after that he would step down when the party had chosen a new leader in May.
Then, only two days ago, everything changed.
Federal finance minister Jim Flaherty (no relation to Joe Flaherty, damn) released an economic update proposal that would, among other things, outlaw striking by government employees and eliminate a $1.95-per-vote fund for the main parties. The opposition parties interpreted this as an attempt by the Harper government to bankrupt them, and only a month after the previous election, it looks like Canada is headed down the road to another one.
What is rather amusing is that if the government falls and the much-rumoured coalition between the Liberals and NDP win, Dion, the man scheduled to retire, will become the Prime Minister.
Thus, this little flick gains new relevance.
And I claim clairvoyance.

I cannot tell a lie. Even though the original casus belli died with DYOS 9, I still wanted to invade Canada. It probably turned out better this way: casting our minds back (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7043301#post7043301) we find that I was not entirely guilty of precipitating the war. Plus, as I was the sole teller of the story I could manipulate it to my liking (avoiding such unpleasantry as dying, par example).
Then Captain2 got involved, and things only got better.
At the time of the piece, Walter Natynczyk had only recently been appointed Chief of Defence Staff after the retirement of his predecessor, Rick Hillier. Barely a month into the job, he faces his first crisis... and it's a doozie.
I've invested more time in research for the Canadian theme than any other, but I think it's worth it.
Thorvald of Lym Jun 27, 2009, 08:11 PM GuitarHero. His brief visit reminded us of the Good Ol' Days, combining campy adventure with actual plot-forwarding. His first comic was cheap... but not deficient. Alas, I doubt we shall see the likes of him again...

Whenever I try to describe DYOS X to my circle of friends, I find myself eventually tracing my way back to the very beginning of the thread to make sense of it all. This cartoon is one of the precious few "checkpoint" moments. The Avatar Wars are over. The Combine has been routed from Earth. Mr. Toyoda hires CivGeneral to recover the "Gem". While being based on a foundation laid by lord_joakim, it is about as close to a 'fresh start' the story experienced... and of course set in motion the events that led to Part II.
Toyoda's expression in Panel 5 is a rarity. Besides after being punched in the gut, it is the only time he has had anything other than that faint smile on his lips.
And yes, the €200,000,000,001 is a deliberate snub to an earlier offer (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7125556#post7125556).

I had long considered beginning annotations of my hand-drawn pieces with my first pencil contribution to the threads... but I have come a surprisingly long way in a year, to the point where my old works almost shame me, and so instead I give you a highlight of my talent.
The larger the frames, the more detailed the cartoon, and ironically, the easier it is to draw. Also, with more room for text, we get one of the precious few opportunities for effort into the background.
The "<Person>'s Guide to _x" is a carry-over from my hobby cartoon; the very first one was actually a retirement gift for a friend, who allegedly has it photocopied and framed. The comic itself was borne from a discussion between another friend and I on the subject of zombie-fighting tactics.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 25, 2009, 09:47 PM I don't *think* I've posted this one, or at the least it's been so long that imageshack deleted it.

Thorvald of Lym Nov 19, 2009, 10:18 PM My final-but-unaired comic for DYOS 6; three years later, at long last completed. It is almost vintage; I considered fixing the typos, but then I thought that would be historically dishonest; the only changes were the pictures of Goebbels and Themi.
...OK. I did fix one typo.

The Butterfly Effect. One little change can elicit a world of difference, and so I steadfastly believe would have been the case with this comic. The firefight that ultimately brought down the thread revolved around the Flying Circus, and had this comic gone to air that would not have been an issue. It may not have been the magic bullet, but it may have at least prolonged the story's life a little further into the new year.
All that I lacked during the Net downtime were the pictures of Goebbels and Themi.
Just two pictures, and it all might have ended differently.

Maybe, maybe the Circus would have been truly defeated and the flames doused for long enough to get a better ending.
It's about equally likely that Stylesrj would have just found a way to retcon that like he always does, make the flying circus return, and get the thread closed anyway.
Who knows.

Tales from the Vault
Episode
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m51/Grenadier_539/Talesfromthevault.jpg
This comic, originally meant for DYOS 10, was never finished. This scene should have taken place during the Gem arc, when Taillesskangaru, the Narrator and Rocket were captured by the Combine while looking for a malfunctioning Giant Death Robot and hunting for the Gem on Arrakis. I stumbled on it while I was cleaning out my old school stuff today. Somehow it got mixed up with some physic notes.
This interrogation scene was meant to be a sort of plot-explanation comic. I was going to use the opportunity to clarify my plotlines, explain any inconsistencies, plotholes and deadends (and there were a lot). I also wanted to introduce The Narrator properly. He first appeared several pages earlier but nothing much was revealed about his personality, his motives, or the people he was working for. In the draft of this comic he joined Taillesskangaru in front of the judges a few panels from where I stopped drawing here. The rough draft for this comic was three and a half (A4) pages long. I also made a draft for a second comic, to be followed immediately after this one, in which Taillesskangaru and the others escape from the Combine prison.
As it turned out, that time of year was exam time. After that was over, I felt depressed and lost the confidence to draw, I felt the thread as a whole was already moving past the point where this would be appropriate and, most importantly, I felt that my "explanations" were poorly thought-out and would only add to the confusion. I stopped work on this comic and rushed this comic (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8174273&postcount=1382) while I thought about how to rework the interrogation scene. After a while I gave up on it altogether and this comic (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8195305&postcount=1415) was the replacement (which did little to clear up the plot inconsistencies. In fact in hindsight it added to them)
When I was ready to contribute to the thread again I was going to make another comic centered on the Narrator but gave up on the idea as by this time most characters were in the Gem Chamber and the thread was wrapping up. His story will have to be told another time.

Thorvald of Lym Jan 12, 2010, 08:03 PM This next piece is a favourite of mine, although I'm not exactly sure why. Breen interrogates Corporal Reitan directly, and comes closest to forming a coherent picture of what happened to the first Coruscanti expedition. I was finally satisfied that I had reached something on par with the cryptic existentialism of lord_joakim's Gem arc, at the same time foreshadowing matters of consequence in Part II (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=8766245#post8766245).

My final contribution for DYOS X, and the titular origin of Part II.
The phrase "plans within plans" is common throughout the Dune series. Lady Elara does in fact utter the line in the game Dune 2000, albeit not in the scene used for this comic. It is a strangely fitting description of the course of DYOS X, and indeed Part II, in that everyone is using everyone else for their own aims while remaining unaware of their own manipulation. It is especially fitting in that House Corrino knows the full story. But who is the epitomic puppeteer?
I had originally hoped to finish the thread with this cartoon, but choxorn requested that he write the conclusion and I couldn't help but oblige. It's short, yet complex; straightforward, yet enigmatic. The investigative and slightly psychotic reader can actually (probably) figure out who they're talking about based on the clues scattered throughout the story. There are only two other published pieces coming as close to saying whodunnit as this one; the second is not available for public consumption.
choxorn Mar 11, 2010, 12:37 AM Short, straightforward- way better than my giant finish. I was just trying to make sense of the plot and that seemed like a good way to do it, although I probably could have shortened it a bit.
Thorvald of Lym Mar 11, 2010, 12:40 AM On the other hand, I wasn't aiming for synopsis. Your comic was useful in that regard.
CivGeneral Mar 12, 2010, 10:24 AM I dont think I have any that qualifies as Best of DYOS .

Something important to note in CivGeneral's comics is that whenever he comes close to death, he has, in fact, contemplated killing himself off. This has happened at least thrice now, but fortunately we rally around him and he does not pull the proverbial trigger.
In this case, as the result of Stylesrj (naturally) he debated making Alyx the sole protagonist in keeping with the tradition of past threads. When I told him it was neat that he finally had a sidekick, he reneged on this idea and CG and Co. was born.
The standoff inspired me to write a little quip for when Grievous and CG would re-encounter later on, but unfortunately I never got the chance to air it:Thorvald: (to CG) "Don't mind him. He's just jealous because he can't catch a break."
Grievous: "What?! I'll have you know I am the most feared bounty hunter in seven galaxies!"
Thorvald: "I know... Yet you still can't get any action. Don't worry: you can always swap stories with Manfred."
CG: (anxious) "I think you've made your point."
Thorvald: "You know why they nicknamed him 'The Ghost'? 'Cuz he's insubst-" Grievous fires a warning shot "Shutting up."

And then I decided to catch up in the fun by one-upping his girlfriend/sidekick idea by having a wife :P
Because those sorts of female companion last longer than military advisors...
Not to be overtaken, CG gets married
The standoff inspired me to write a little quip for when Grievous and CG would re-encounter later on, but unfortunately I never got the chance to air it:
He can also talk to Themi about his problems... :D
Thorvald of Lym May 04, 2010, 07:50 PM Here's another relic dredged up from the dustbin. The comic it was part of was to be aired sometime during the crisis in Moscow after kulade's defeat. I can't remember what held me up; it was probably the map design and scripting. This was all the footage that made it past review, and then the plot went forward and I was forced to scrap the whole thing.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2327/dyos10dyos4x.png
As it would have turned out, the facility was involved in processing Tiberium, and this comic would have led to the resurgence of the Brotherhood of Nod. Considering how wacky things became without Kane getting involved, in retrospect it was probably a good thing this never went to air.
This also would have been the first demonstration of Cold War Crisis content since its release in July of '08 (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7071376#post7071376).

Pre-DYOS 5 Era
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m51/Grenadier_539/drawplay2.png
I saved a few comics from the Pre-DYOS 5 Era (http://dyos.wikkii.com/wiki/Pre-DYOS_5_Era) (2003 - 2005) before the threads themselves were purged. Considered by some the "Golden Age" of DYOS, the threads during this period were originally hosted in Off-Topic. There were seven or eight regular contributors, with other OTers joining in the fun every so often. Of those, only a few still posts on CFC, and CivGeneral is the only regular contributor in all twelve DYOS threads, past and present.
This comic is old - it was originally posted on DRAW Your Own Story 3, if I remember correctly DRAW Your Own Story 1 (thanks CivCube). I cannot recall who drew it - it might have been CivCube, or Rambuchan it was FredLC actually. It was way before I joined the forum in any case. Here we see the grand council of the Moderators dealing with what we can presume is yet another attack by CurtSibing. Some of you may still remember Thunderfall in his battleship form falling out of the internet and being shot by lord_joakim in Avatar Wars, and spending most of that thread in a near-death state. Here, Thunderfall is the decisive leader, the tough looking-guy with a cool hat, seated majestically on his throne. He is surrounded by his loyal lieutanants, respectful and ready to answer to his commands.
Stylesrj May 15, 2010, 09:11 AM I knew they were not lost! Only hiding!

Kan' Sharuminar Jun 28, 2010, 06:35 PM My DYOS XI run. Daemon and Thorvald's early comics inspired me to properly come back, and I decided to go about it differently - namely write the whole series in advance and have it released pretty quickly. In theory it worked...it's just that there were a couple of large hiatus' from me in the way.
The other bad thing is that in writing it in advance I couldn't interact with other contributors, which is the whole point of DYOS. For the next wee while I think I'll go back to that but with a general story in my mind.

DRAW Your Own Story VIII
This comic is, I think, one of my better ones from my noobish days. It is DRAW Your Own Story 8, and something is causing computers to explode whenever they try to log on to CivFanatics. As usual, the DYOS verse was engulfed by a galaxy-wide war.
Here, Taillesskangaru attempts to rally the Brotherhood of Nod for his scheme to destroy Stylesrj, among other plans. Captain2 survived an airship explosion earlier in the thread to join Genghis Khan in the hunt for the culprit behind the exploding computers. Baghdad Bob, as usual, is the town denier-for-hire. Inspired by the show 24. Click on the comic for sound effects not previously included in the original post!

As one may recall (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=6064889#post6064889), I'd referenced Dad's Army years before, and I thought it had faded from the public consciousness enough that I could do it again. Not to mention this time, I think I did it "right".
I had fun with the soldiers' poses, but sadly very few can be seen in any sort of exemplifying detail. I think my favourite is the Tommy in the left of Panel 13.
Can you find Gordon Freeman hidden in this comic?
lord_joakim Nov 14, 2010, 05:51 PM I'm not sure what people thought of this, as the numerous jokes buried within are somewhat concealed, but it's actually what I consider some of my best work, because it is. I happen to like it a lot.

Nobody should have to guess that this is pretty much a direct rip from the Spongebob episode, "Christmas Who?". I can't remember exactly what inspired it, although I think it was comparing the Styleses and CG to the same love-hate relationship between Spongebob and Patrick and Squidward. And then as I really got into it, it became the perfect summary of DYOS in general.
At three and a half pages, this is the longest single hand-drawn comic I've done to date. I spent nearly five days straight slowly slogging through it, and I missed getting it up before Christmas Day by only four hours' worth of work. It's certainly not the prettiest, but given the length, the effort, and that je ne sais quoi that ties this all together, I consider it to be one of my best pieces ever.
It's also set an ambitious benchmark, and I fear this year's special will also miss the Christmas Eve deadline.
This comic also contains the first appearance of the flag of the Eastern Union, the result of many months' procrastination and about half an hour of actual work.

Thorvald of Lym Feb 17, 2011, 02:45 AM DRAW Your Own Story 9 came close to reattaining the spirit of the old days. It featured some of what I think was the best talent to emerge since before DYOS 5: Rheinmetall, Tykinruoka, kulade, Splime, Yuri2356... They brought a wide variety of artistic styles, and I deeply regret not having the chance to have worked alongside them. With the exception of kulade, none of this star cast carried over into DYOS 10.
The following two comics took place around the time Stylesrj had allied with Saddam Hussein, and planned to take over the world using the Cut-and-Paste Machine to spam an army.

There's an odd tendency in DYOS to gravitate toward levying private armies. Normally the easiest way is to pull from existing sources, sometimes calling dibs on entire countries. Splime went one step beyond, literally creating his own troops. He provided "reference sheets" should other contributors have need of his characters, and as luck would have it I saved them all in anticipation of actually connecting with the greater story. If I recall correctly, the colour patterns are as follows: Green is Splime himself; Red is Infantry; Blue is Air Force; and Yellow... I can't remember.*

(http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=10262353#post10262353) From the author himself: "BTW, the way I intend to use the guys: green is an officer (including me), red is a regular soldier, yellow is a support soldier (ex: vehicle driver), blue is a pilot..."

I think some of us (Myself and Stylesrj) are following suit with our own private armies/mercs. Splime would be a pioneer.

You both had private armies way before DYOS 9, like everyone, just saying.
Stylesrj Feb 18, 2011, 02:19 AM We didn't really give the private armies a name. We just said "It's my space fleet. Who cares who's in it"
Nowadays, we've got them staffed with named ships and mauve shirt crew.
CivCube Mar 18, 2011, 11:05 PM This one took far too long to finish. The original scene featured far more than this, including CivCube riding a sandworm to the nearby starport ("Muad' Stick! Muad' Stick!"). Once I realized my hand was cramping up, I stopped at escaping from the temple. Ah well...

Perfection Mar 18, 2011, 11:12 PM I'm still proud of my response to Stylesrj's private Army:
