View Full Version : Earth 34 civs 124x68

This is the same map as Earth24 for Warlords and 18 for Vanilla with the new BtS civs in their historical start locations. Eurasia is not upscaled, so Europe will be fairly competitive. Colonies allowed.

This is just what I was looking for... a basic earth map with a bunch of civs... nothiing fancy.

I am having a blast with this map.

My first time on an Earth-map. I decided to be Shaka. It's now about 100 A.D. and I am basically in control of the African continent (which for me is amazing, since I usually don't play the Aggressive types). I eliminated Ethiopia, reduced Egypt to one city, and I'm now attacking Carthage.

One question, about the map. I've never played with anything but Standard size. The game is running fine right now. Does that mean it will KEEP running fine, as I move into the more graphic-intense later parts of the game? Or could I have problems develop? I'm running BTS 3.13 on an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 3800, with a GForce FX7300 256 MB Video card.

Thanx for any help on this.

Many larger maps tend to slow down in late game, especially if you play on high difficulty levels with many civs. The problem usually comes when there are many units on the map. I don't know if it will slow down too much if you have a good RAM. This happens with most larger maps though.
Hope this helps.

CharlieM

What would be a "good" number for RAM?

marx&engles
Dec 23, 2007, 08:08 PM
The higher the better for Civ. The effects should be similar to any other map in late game.

As I said above, I am doing suprisingly well on this map, playing as Shaka. I am playing on Warlord setting, normal speed (can't win consistently yet on this level, so I have not moved up yet).

This is my first time using an 'earth' map. I previously played Terra or Continent or Pangea games, and struggled mightily to win at Warlord level.

But in this game, so far I have 10 cities on the African continent. Most of the European countries have one. I am teching ahead of them, while keeping ahead in military, of course. It's fun, but it seems a bit too easy. Is this because of my greatly improved Civ skills? I think not. Isn't it easier to expand outside of Europe, because of the cramped quarters in Europe? And is there anything else that's helping me out I may not know about? ... I just can't believe I got this good this quick.

A related question ... if I wanted to get rid of some of the Civs before I start the next game (edit them out), how would I do so?

Thanks much and happy holidays.

First of all, it depends on what difficulty level you are playing on. Also, on any earth map, Europe tends to get very crowded, and that is historical and realistic.

If you want to remove some civs, then you have to open the worldbuilder file in notepad and delete all their information. I'll post something more detailed in a little while. You can also look at tutorials and guides about editing worldbuilder if you want.

Wolfshanze

Yeah... open the map file with NOTEPAD... look at the Civs not-used... say Civ38 or Civ39 (maybe player38 or player39... I'm not home)... copy that info into any civ you want to remove... in other words if the Sumerians were Civ/Player24, copy blank-civ info into that slot (no leaders, no nations, etc) and it will remove the civ from the game safely.

You are probably doing well because unlike other civs, Shaka does have some room to grow... the European civs are all crowded like crazy and have no room to grow without killing each other (and the AI tends to shy-away from outright killing everyone every turn).

I played this same map as Germany and had ZERO room to grow... so naturally I just went "super military" right from the start and took-over the Dutch, Holy Romans, French and Italians in that order within a very short time span. Then I had some room (and some free cities too)... eventually becoming master of all Europe, then I built a navy and landed in South America. That's about where I am now.

There was one thing I hated about this map though... the SHORT "cutesie" names for all the laders... "Ham" for "Hammurabai", "Dar" for "Darius", "Han" for "Hannibal"... just way too cute, so I had to mod the full names back into the game for me (once again using Notepad).

Did you install the custom dll for this map? You need LtBob's CvGameCoreDLL.dll to unlock all 34 Civs.

When I played a epic speed game the game ended in 1900. It was not the default time victory which is 2050. I was 2 turns away from launching my space ship unitil the game ended in 1900 with time victory. I guess this map was meant to be played at normal or quick speed? I played another game with time victory off and the same thing happened. What was odd is when the year 1900 came up it said you have been defeated. That was funny since no other civs were even close to any victory. I will try my next game on normal speed to see what happens.

Feb 02, 2008, 11:47 AM
Interesting... Sorry I didn't test it too extensively.
I think all you need to do is open the map in notepad and change the 'max turns' value at the top of the file to whatever value you want (750 for epic). If you want, you can also change the gamespeed to Epic here. That's should be all you need.
I appreciate any feedback, so let me know if you have any other problems.

When the next patch comes out can you redue the map to be able to use epic speed to have the game end at 2050 instead of 1900? Games on normal and quick speed work perfect btw....

Help plz,

plz say, can i Play this as NextWar Mod?

marx&engles
Feb 20, 2008, 07:11 PM
That's fairly simple and straightforward. Just follow the steps below.

1. First locate the Earth 34 Civs mod folder and open the Next war mod folder in a separate window.
2. Copy the files in the 'PrivateMaps' folder of this mod into the 'PrivateMaps' or 'PublicMaps' folder of the other mod.
3. Open the 'Assets' folder of this mod and copy the 'CvGameCoreDLL' file into the 'Assets' folder of the Next War mod.

That is all you need to do. Post any other problems you may have.

Okay...here is my issue:

I have DL'd this mod - Earth 34 civs. Now, I have placed this in my mods folder for civ 4 BtS (all updated, etc.). Now, I have also DL'd Lt. Bob's mod (I know his mod works because I can play a 'custom game' with 34 civs). Now, I open up the earth 34 civs mod and it STILL is ONLY letting me choose 1 of 18 leaders. How do I get it to use the 34 civs for the earth map (I'm trying to use earth 34 civs with ireland celts). I don't know where to go from here. I have both your mod & Lt. Bob's mod (to crack so I can use 34 civs). So yeah, I'm lost and this is, clearly, your mod and I figured what better place to go for help...

Feb 22, 2008, 06:24 PM
You shouldn't need to do anything else other than download it to the correct folder and load the mod... Check in the mod's 'Assets' folder and make sure there is a file in there entitled CvGameCoreDLL (this file is the same as the one from Lt. Bob's mod. Also make sure you are using BTS v3.13 (this shouldn't be an issue if you can at least get it to load). If that doesn't work. try downloading it again. Have you tried any of the other maps in this mod by the way? Do they work?

Welcome to the CivFanatics forums by the way.

Check the mod's assets folder to make sure it has a file labeled CvGameCoreDLL. This is the file that allows for more civs. If it doesn't or the problem persists, you should try replacing that with the file downloaded from the below link. That should work, but post any further problems if you need help.

A Marathon game ended very early for me, is there any way you can fix this? (Or can I? what would I change?)

Titus001
Apr 09, 2008, 08:34 PM
I asked the same question as the poster above me. Marxengles said to do this. Only problem is I don't know what a notepad is or how to change the turns to 750.

"Interesting... Sorry I didn't test it too extensively.
I think all you need to do is open the map in notepad and change the 'max turns' value at the top of the file to whatever value you want (750 for epic). If you want, you can also change the gamespeed to Epic here. That's should be all you need.

The map is very cool. Every game I start I move Portugal to Brazil and the celts to Australia. I also move the Turks and place them between the mongols and russian. Mostly I put the turks a little south of the russians and mongols. In my latest game I'm the romans and have the Trajan era borders of the empire. China marched on the persians and quickly made them a vassal. Aztecs and usa have been in a long war for hundreds of years. Saladin is doing well in this game. Most games he is very weak. If I only knew how to make the turns to 750 so I could play an epic speed game which is waht I play all the time except for this map. I would play the giant earth map more often but the turns at 1700AD take about 1 min to finish which is too long for me. It also takes way too long for me to make my private lake as the romans. Takes me well into the middle ages.

marx&engles
Apr 09, 2008, 09:58 PM
I probably should have made that a bit more detailed...

1. Open the folder called "PrivateMaps" inside the main mod folder.
2. Select the map you want to edit and right click on it and chose "Open With...", which should give you a list of programs. Select notepad.
3. At the very top of the file just a few lines down should be a value that says "max turns" or something. Change this to 750, and it should work fine.

I haven't had a chance to try a full game on epic, so I am relying on others for feedback.

Also, there really isn't much I can do about the slow turn speeds in the late game as this is due to the vast numbers of units that most civs have by then. This is a common problem, accentuated in this case by the number of civs.

I noticed that you are editing the map in worlbuilder to put certain civs in certain specific starting locations. Instead of doing that every time, after making the changes in worldbuilder, save it. But when you save it, save it under the public maps folder on the left, and you should have your own custom map. I don't really have time to be very in depth right now, but there are plenty of guides about map editing that I myself learned from on these forums.

Sorry about any problems.

COOl! I got it to work. Thanks for the help marxengles. That was very simple to do.

Another question... When I changed the max turns to 750 I also saw the leader names for the civs. Any chance I could delete lets say Stalin and replace him with Catherine?

Looks like I will start a new game on epic speed very soon........ I just like epic speed much more compared to normal speed. Epic gives me more time with my legions to conquer. I try to conquer Spain, France, Greece, half of england, Turkey, Israel/syria,egypt and north africa before the early middle ages. Normal speed it takes me till the late middle ages to do this. Again, thanks for the help.

What is the difference between earth 34 civs, Earth 34 civs Ireland and Earth 34 civs Mali? When I played this map I would always pick earth 34 civs.

Good work! I'm playing as Mali on Settler (LOL, just until I get the hang of things). At first I started out okay, but production was slow. Then I started to speed up the more I expanded, thanks in large part to trading techs with Hannibal, Saladin, Zara, and other nations. Right now I control the vast majority of west Africa, and I have expanded into Bulgar, a barbarian state at the bottom of the western coast of Africa, and my first conquest. I'm planning on expanding into the Carthaginian Empire. They are relatively weak and small, with about four cities. Eliminating them would give me a nice resource boost. Once I get the chance I want to be the first to reach the Americas and eliminate Huayna, Monty, and Pacal so I gain control of their resources. I'm counting on that to spur a massive economic expansion, propelling me way ahead of Saladin, my main competitor.

However, my game crashed twice (I reloaded from an autosave after the first time) around the 1300s. It might also have to do with the fact that right before I start trading maps. If I reduce the in-game graphics settings, will that help?

Nvm, didn't read the last page

marx&engles
Apr 14, 2008, 05:47 PM
@Emperor Mansa: I'm not sure why it crashed, but lowering the graphics quality can help if your computer can't handle it.
Also, if you find Mali lacks resources I included a version that allows Mali to access gold and stone near the capital.

@Titus 001: If you want to change the leaders then all you have to do is find the civ info and change 'LeaderType' from 'STALIN' to 'CATHERINE'. Note that the only time this doesn't work is for Mao who is 'CHINESE_LEADER' and remember to use underscores if there are spaces. Below that where it says LeaderDescription or whatever is what the name will appear as on the scores list. Unfortunately there is a bug that only allows a certain number of letters total for all leader names (hence the truncated leader names) which kind of sucks for large maps like this.

Anyone interested in editing this map should look at the various map editing guides in the guides subforum.

Emperor Mansa

I accidentally overwrote my Mali game. :p Oops. But now I'm playing as Gandhi, and I'm doing very well. India has a lot of resources, and I expanded into the Tibetan plateau to provide a buffer against China, which should work quite well. I am building several forts to protect Tibet and its two cities. I also expanded to the west and north, seizing control of a copper deposit. The roads in the region also make travel convenient.

So far so good. I want to try this as a civ in the western hemisphere, just to see how things go on the other side.

I only discovered while playing that this map has a limit of 500 turns. Why? I expected to go through the whole history. Instead, the game finishes in the Middle Ages (Marathon). That's not suitable for a giant earth map with 34 Civs.
Because of this, it's a little bit pity that I can't finish my first game on this map regularly. I hope, deleting the line "MaxTurns=500" will keep this ugly turn limit away in further games.

BTW, thanks for the Bhruic Version. I had the bug in the game that my spies were teleported out of enemy's country when declaring war on him. Is this an issue with the regular 3.13 version? I haven't played that much before I turned to Bhruic's.:p

Sorry about that... I have been out of town for the past week and haven't had a chance to check this thread.

@Dowling and TSteamer: Check the following for now-
1. You have BtS v3.13. I haven't been able to test the mod's compatibility with the new patch yet, so I'm not sure if it works with 3.17...
2. The file is unzipped in either C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods or My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Mods

If the mod does not appear when you go to Advanced-Load a Mod, then it is in the wrong folder.

If you try to load it and it crashes then there is a problem with the dll file in the assets folder of the mod. If this is your problem, verify you have bts v3.13 and also try re-downloading the mod and replacing the dll file with the correct one.

3.17 Update: I unfortunately do not have the skills required to update this mod by myself, as it relies on a mod component by a different author. I will try my best to make this compatible as soon as possible.

I'm still using 3.13, and I did everything you said in the directions. The game works, but I've been trying to change the turn number to 100 for Marathon games. I went into the Private Maps folder and changed the value, but I keep getting an error when trying to save the changes. Eventually I found that the folders were "Read-only" in properties, so I unchecked the box and hit apply... however, each time I try to save it again, it still gives me the same errors and Properties still show it as Read-only. I don't know whether this is a Vista problem or something, but was just wondering whether you could help me.
Also, I'm not sure how to actually play the map that I have... it's saved in the right folders (I think), and I tried opening them from Explorer and also loaded the mod from the BtS menu, but then I couldn't find the map(s) under any of the secnarios. To play the map all you have to do is extract the mod into your Civ4/BtS/Mods folder and select Advanced--Load a Mod--Earth 34 Civs.

As for the Read Only/Vista problem, I don't have Vista so I'm not sure how that works...
You should just have to right click on the folder and uncheck ReadOnly and apply the change. If it's difference, then try Help or just look it up on Google or something. Unless it's ReadOnly, you should just be able to open the file in Notepad and edit it.

General Announcement: I just uploaded a new 3.17 compatible version with Solver's Patch

You might want to give Lt.Bob's v5.0 DLL patch a go...

It's for v3.17, includes Solver's 0.19 fixes and includes 40-civs playable... the difference between his and Solver's 50-civ version is that with all 34-civs in the game, Solver's won't allow for colonies to be split-off if the 34-civ max is already in-play... Lt.Bob's patch will allow colonies to be split beyond the original 34.

@Nerowannabe- Yes. This mod allows you to play as any of the 34 civs. All you need to do is unzip it in the correct folder and load it from advanced-load a mod.

@Wolfshanze- That's the dll I'm using, and the reason why. I already saw your posts in the other thread. :)

@Cyber-couch- It should work fine, but what exactly happens? Does the game crash?

@reverend oats- Really? I thought I had checked that... Sorry, but it might be a few days before I can check on that, but where exactly are they in your game? @Wolfshanze- Good idea. I was actually thinking of doing something similar by just adding a few simple modular modcomps or something when I get the chance.

@TenorsBass- Winzip is all you need for this mod, but I would recommend that you download a better program such as Winrar and 7-zip.

@Komunyst_Indian- All of the problems posted thus far have been resolved (as far as I know). Feel free to post any that you encounter.

You'll also want to update your Gamecore DLL... LtBob's and Solvers are both flawed. They are both carrying a bug with the AI bombers... simply put, AI bombers (and fighters and Airships) won't fly offensive bombing missions if a single human fighter is on an intercept mission in-range. Essentially nerfing AI air combat.

I've fixed it in my Wolfshanze Mod gamecore (which is based on Lt.Bob's)... you can download just my gamecore on my main Wolfshanze Mod thread if you want to include it... I've told both Lt.Bob and Solver about the bug, but neither has updated their patches in some time.

Was wondering- where do Celts, Dutch, Portugese, and Sumerians go? It always seemed too close for me.

Dresden has also put together an updated version of Solver's patch that fixes the AI bomber issue and then some:

This is the same map as the 18-civ earth map that comes with Civ4... it's just been upped to 34 civs.

France is the best because you can axe rush all of Europe.

Suggestion- Remove the deer in Iceland and replace it with sheep, as there isn't any big game there, while sheep herding is a large part of the economy.
