An alternate history of the Second World War from the US perspective.

Before I begin I want to thank Kan' Sharuminar for his excellent "Written by the Victors" AAR, which brought me to this wonderful game. You'll notice my reports will be a bit like his (though not nearly as good, of course) and I confess I was inspired by his style. I also apologize for my English which is terrible, I know. I ask for your patience :)
This is going to be my 10th serious game, I've tried Czechoslovakia, Germany and some other countries before to get a grip of this excellent, but complicated strategy game. Usually, I tried to stick to the history as we know it. This time, I want to try something different, I want to create a whole new alternate timeline. I chose the US for my attempt, since it offers many opportunities - it is not locked in a major alliance, has enormous industrial potential and is isolated from the rest of the world by oceans. It can choose many paths. So, what if the US hadn't supported the Allies, but the Axis instead?
I'll start in 1936 with difficulty and AI aggressiveness set on "normal". I have HoI2 with the Doomsday expansion, so the end date is Dec 1953. There is a plenty of time to change the history!
Winner Oct 09, 2007, 03:27 AM Chapter 1: The Road to War
Episode I - In the beginning... (Jan 1936 - Dec 1938)
The US certainly doesn't start with much. Land forces are limited to 3 obsolete infantry divisions and one even more obsolete Cavalry division. Few garrison units are spread over the US holdings in Pacific and Panama. Navy is big, but mostly outdated, so it's potential is very limited. What's worse, it can't be upgraded. Air Force is small, but at least it can be modernized in the future.
The inadequacy of the US military was a result of the decades long incompetent democratic leadership peaking with the presidency F. D. Roosevelt and his New Deal. The US was crippled by isolationist and pacifist sentiments and the economy was only slowly recovering from the major economic crisis. It was obvious that if the US were to matter in the world, the old leaders had to go. And that's exactly what happened.

1936 elections poster
In the 1936 elections, F.D.Roosevelt's campaign failed and despite the narrow result, he lost. His successor, Alf M. Landon, immediately appointed his new administration and started with his reform programme. The US political orientation moved considerably to the right.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9974/1electionslandonig9.jpg
Landon's first administration
Though he didn't plan to change the US isolationist policies, he believed that peace for the US can only be secured by a strong military. This is why he ordered construction of the so-called "Coastal Defense Perimeter", a line of light fortifications garrisoned by the National Guard troops. "CDP" was supposed to protect the US from any invasion from the sea.
CDP was to be supplemented with regular infantry divisions and marine divisions. Naturally such a mobilization required resources, so the President ordered most of the navy to be scrapped, with exceptions of carriers and the most modern ships. Slowly, the new infantry divisions begun to be deployed along the Canadian border, since the British Empire was believed to be the only credible threat to the US soverignty. Most of the US industry was located near the Eastern Coast, so any invasion from Canada would directly threaten the most important parts of America.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9955/0mapvw4.jpg
The government also ordered the biggest companies to start working on new ship designs, especially aircraft carriers, destroyers and light cruisers, which would replace the scrapped ships. In two years, America managed to build a small, but very effective military. Still, given the size of the US industry and population, the US army was a dwarf compared to other major power. Even small countries like Czechoslovakia, which had less then 1/10 of the US population, maintained an army of comparable size.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2629/3armycomparlu7.jpg
With his reforms going as he planned, the President turned his attention to the international affairs. The situation in the world was clearly deteriorating. In Spain, a group of nationalists started a rebellion against the leftist government.
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/9820/mapspain37.jpg
Landon, a staunch anti-communist, asked the Congress for extra funding to help the Franco's people fight what he saw as a necessary action against the expanding influence of the socialist, anarchist and communist movements, which he personally deemed to be the greatest danger for the mankind. To his disillusion, the Congress refused to release the funds with explanation it would undermine the US neutrality and jeopardize the reforms in the US. Landon then turned to his friends from the corporate circles, very rich industrialists, to help fund the nationalist movement. First shipments of supplies crossed the Atlantic the next month, but it was too late. The delay caused by the Congress decision stopped a promising Nationalist offensive, which gave the Republican Spain's forces time to regroup and then strike. With the equipment and weapons from the Soviet Union, they managed to split the Nationalist forces and then destroy them. The war ended with Republican victory few months after it begun.
The President and his advisors were concerned, when they learned that Britain was also secretly helping the Republic Spain. It was expected that international communist movement would support them, but Britain? Does that mean that Communism is influencing Britain's policies? Landon thus ordered the intelligence services to expand their operations in Britain. If Britain was about to get closer to the Soviet Union, the US government had to know.
War in China
In 1937, the world was shocked when Imperial Japan declared war on China, which was suffering from decades long civil war. The strongest faction, the Nationalist China led by Chiang Kai-shek, united the other factions into a single front against Japan. It didn't help much. Although the Chinese had numerical superiority, Japanese had modern infantry divisions supported by one of the best navies in the world and an effective airforce. North China felt in a few weeks and Japanese forces then headed south.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3310/2asiamapos6.jpg
Japanese invasion of China
Nationalist China was a friend of the US and its leader Chiang Kai-shek was praised by the President as a strong and good leader. Landon supported his anti-communist posture and saw his country as a barrier which would stop further communist expansion in Asia. Thats why Japanese invasion put the US in an awkward position. Japan was long a reliable trading partner to the US. What should the government do, when two of its friend fight each other? The president decided that China is more important in the long term and once again asked the Congress to release funds to aid a foreign country. This time, the Congress agreed but the funds it approved were hardly adequate to make a difference.
The President was upset. On a joint session, he named seventeen senators who were most responsible for the final decision and labeled them "the Stubborn 17". He blamed them for "a sabotage" of his foreign policy and said that the "Chinese blood is on their hands". Privately, he just called them "pigheads". After this affair, the President came to conclusion that the Constitution must be changed in order to enable the President to take charge of the foreign policy. "The President should be able to do important decisions without a congressional approval," Landon said to his aide in September 1937. His office made drafts of the amendments which were to be discussed in Congress, although the date wasn't clear yet. Fortunately, the Chinese managed to slow down the Japanese onslaught in the north, albeit only temporarily and only because the winter weather made it impossible for the Japanese to use their airforce to its full potential.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8692/4japanoffensivexz0.jpg
Next year, Imperial Japanese forces landed near Shanghai in an attempt to draw chinese divisions from the north. They quickly advanced deep into China. While the world powers focused their attention on Czechoslovakia and the so-called Sudetenland crisis, the Japanese threatened to encircle whole chinese armies. Naturally, this was far more important to the President than the fate of a distant European country, although Czech compatriot organizations pressed the government to support it.
http://www.old-picture.com/united-states-history-1900s---1930s/pictures/addressing-Congress-Woodrow-Wilson.jpg
For the third and last time on 24th October 1938, Landon went to Congress to get the funds he needed. The congressional refusal orchestrated by the Stubborn 17 was the last straw. He abruptly left the hall and slammed the door behind him. The next day, he held a press conference and announced that he would ask the Congress to amend the Constitution in January next year.

After sobering up from huge New Year's celebrations, America found itself on the brink of a major constitutional crisis. As expected, the President put forward his proposal for constitutional amendments. The Congress was about to vote in a few days, but it was already clear what the likely outcome would be. After seeing the proposals, the Stubborn 17 immediately started their campaign against them. According to the Senators, they would in fact change America into a dictatorship - the President would be the sole director of the foreign policy and its funding, he would take charge of the national security including FBI, and his position as a commander-in-chief of the US military would be strengthened. The 17 Senators called these proposals a "scam" and refused to vote for them. The rest of the Congress was likely to follow them.
http://www.gao.gov/about/history/cbowsher.jpg
The night before the vote, 14 of "the Stubborn 17" Senators were arrested by the FBI and charged with various crimes, including fraud, abuse of authority, rape and contacts with criminal gangs. In the morning, while the President attended the congressional session, armed National Guard troops were patrolling outside the Capitol. Nervous congressmen then held a vote about the President's proposals, which passed. The President thanked the Congress for the vote of confidence and promised he will use his new powers "according to the spirit of the US democracy". Many of the representatives and senators then resigned, some of them publicly stated they "can't live in the atmosphere of fear which now exists in the US government."

With his hands free, the President appointed his new advisors and ordered them to coordinate massive shipments of supplies, oil, metals and other important materials to China, which now was in a desperate need of them. The result was surprising: the Chinese army, which was on a brink of collapse only few weeks ago, amazingly recovered and went to an offensive which resulted in the encirclement of 9 Japanese divisions in the province of Nanping. Although devastated by freezing temperatures and lack of supplies, the Japanese refused to surrender and were massacred in the ensuing battle. Chinese soldiers, many of whom witnessed the Massacre of Nanking, had no mercy with the Japanese aggressors. Only few hundred out of almost 100,000 soldiers survived.

Chinese victory in Nanping
The victory in Nanping allowed the Chinese to crush the Shanghai enclave, where another thousands of Japanese fell, and then start a spring offensive in the North, where they crossed the Yellow river in March 1939.
Once again, the events in China coincided with important events in Europe. Germany, which annexed Sudetenland in 1938 after the Munich conference, now invaded and annexed the rest of Czechoslovakia. Czechs, as usual, offered no resistance and surrendered without bloodshed. The western part of former Czechoslovakia became the "Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren", while Slovakia was established as a semi-independent puppet state. As a result, Britain offered an alliance to Poland, which was supposed to discourage Germany from further expansion in Central Europe.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2339/8endofczzm3.jpg
Czechoslovakia, abandoned by its allies, surrenders without a fight
This was followed by a rather hilarious episode, when Italy, jealous of Germany's gains, sent a similar ultimatum to Albania, demanding its surrender and incorporation into the Italian "New Roman Empire". Albanians, unlike Czechs, had the guts to refuse, which so shocked the Italians that they were unable to declare war on them. US Secretary of State Arthur Vandenberg almost died laughing when he read the Foreign Service's report.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5046/9albaniapx9.jpg
The Italian blunder
The smile froze on his face few weeks later, when he read another report, this time about the situation in China.
Following their victory in Nanping, Chinese pushed north and crossed the Yellow river. Unfortunately, their success made them hasty - the vision of the ultimate victory over the hated Japanese was too compelling. In the summer of 1939, they conducted several poorly planned offensives north of Yellow river, which seriously weakened their flanks. Japanese generals took the opportunity and started the operation named "Dragonfall". Its goal was to encircle the bulk of the Chinese army and trap them on the wrong side of the Yellow river. The operation was a huge success. After a week of heavy fighting, the Chinese were encircled. In July, the bloodthirsty Japanese were about to take revenge for Nanping.

The President enjoys his well-deserved vacation
While Chinese desperately fought to break through Japanese positions and save their trapped armies, while tensions in Europe mounted, the President took a leave. Although this was mildly criticized in the press (which was now closely observed by the police), the truth was the President was exhausted. Since he took new powers in January, he had been literally flooded with work. Especially the FBI reports which now mostly ended up on his desk were worrying. According to the counter-espionage operatives, the Soviet Union expanded its spy networks in the US, gaining agents among the leftist intellectuals, communists and workers, who hated Landon for removing the New Deal social benefits they'd been used to receive. He ordered several anti-communist operations, banned the communist parties and put the well-known communist sympathizers under surveillance, but it didn't seem to improve the situation. Obviously, the US relations with the Soviets fell to a new low.
At least the situation in the US Navy gave the President a reason for optimism. Two new aircrafts carriers, USS Victor and USS Annihilator were commissioned in August. The mass production of super-modern light cruisers and destroyers had also speeded up. According to the doctrine of so-called "Carrier Task Forces", which had become dominant in the last years, aircraft carriers were lumped together in a single flotilla protected by relatively small ships meant not to fight other surface vessels, but the enemy aircrafts and submarines. US Navy formed two such forces - one in Atlantic and one in Pacific. Unfortunately, aircrafts carriers were extremely costly and the US couldn't afford to build more than two at the same time. Inevitably, a decision had to be made which task force would be prioritized. The president decided that Atlantic was more important to the US defense, because Japanese, the only credible naval power in Pacific, were now occupied with the war in China and couldn't think about attacking the US. Furthermore, a new advanced carrier design was developed and the President immediately ordered new carriers to be build.

Carrier Task Force ALPHA under command of Vice Admiral Nimitz
On 24th August, shocking news arrived to the White House: Germany and the USSR signed a non-aggression pact! This was a serious blow to the US foreign policy strategy, which counted with Germany as a natural ideological barrier keeping Communism out of Europe. The President spoke with the German ambassador in Washington who assured him that this pact is purely pragmatic measure meant to contain the Soviet threat and by no means pose any danger to the US interests. The president did not believe him. In the past months, he came to conclusion that the next great war will be fought between the Western nations and Communism, so everything what helps the communists hurts the US interests. Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do about it, but it left a deep scar in his mind. Many believe this was the turning point when President's paranoia begun.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/60/12molotovribbpactmi5.jpg
The news of Nazi-Soviet pact were soon overshadowed by something much more important - the start of a new European war on 1st September, 1939, when Germany declared war on Poland after it refused to return Danzig to Germany. Britain and France honored their promises this time and declared war on Germany two days later. The US ambassador left Warsaw out of fear for his life, when Germany started bombing the city. The US position was unclear. Secretary of State called for armistice and general peace conference, but officially the US remained neutral in the conflict, despite calls from Polish Americans, who loudly demanded intervention. Such calls were naturally not realistic, given the strength of the German Wehrmacht.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/6030/13armycomparac5.jpg
Land forces size at the beginning of the war
Aside from the fact that an intervention was utterly impossible, the US government had no intentions to take any actions against Germany. Although it signed a pact with the USSR, it was still the only country in Europe which took steps against Communist propaganda on its soil. In Britain or France, Communists were free to agitate and spread their propaganda. The President looked at it with undisguised disgust.
Meanwhile, the US military leaders closely observed the war operations in Europe. Some of them believed that Germany who faced a two front war against numerically superior enemy would eventually be defeated. They vastly underestimated the effectiveness of the German war machine. After only 3 weeks, Poland surrendered and was annexed by Germany. The only general in the US Army who predicted such a result was major-general Patton, who had long supported the formation of US armored corps. His words gained a lot of weight when his theories were proven right by the German success in Poland.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/9609/14polandannexedct4.jpg
Germany was not the only one who attacked the neighboring nations. The USSR took the opportunity and declared war on Finland after it refused its ultimatum demanding some of its territories. This time, the President ordered transfer of money and material to aid the brave Finns, but it was too little, too late. After 2 moths of bitter fighting, Finland agreed to the Soviet demands. The President watched closely what the USSR would do with defeated Finland, fortunately the heavy losses it suffered eased Stalin's plans for incorporation of the whole Finland into the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, the President saw this aggression as another sign of a growing communist power. During the Winter war, as it was called, he ordered another crackdowns on communist organizations in the US. Hundreds of people were arrested and though the punishments were still relatively mild, the President was shocked by the number of arrested persons. He believed that after his previous actions against them, the communist organizations have been largely eliminated. Now he learned they just continued under the disguise of social democratic clubs, youth centers or moved to illegality.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/2360/15northchinaic3.jpg
Meanwhile in China...
At least some good news arrived from China. After moths of heroic effort, the Chinese managed to break the Japanese formations, evacuate their exhausted armies trapped at the north bank of Yellow River, and force the remaining Japanese to retreat. By November, the front stabilized along the river. It was now becoming clear that Japanese can't win the war in China. Their loses in the last year were catastrophic while the Chinese, though they suffered heavy casualties too, were able to replenish their losses from the vast reservoir of men. With the help from America, even the quality of their divisions improved. Superiority in number combined with improvements in quality meant it was just a matter of time before China retake its lost provinces in the north.
http://www.3dstudio.cz/galerie/obrazova/img_big/3623.jpg
During the winter 1939 and spring 1940, the President made almost no appearance in public and rumors about his mental health begun to spread among the people. According to some sources, he fired half of the White House employees, including his secretary, two advisors and a chef, out of fear they were communist sympathizers. On the press conference in March, which everyone believed to be called because of the German invasion of Scandinavia, he talked about the Canadian election, in which the left-leaning parties scored a victory. He openly said that such a result was not acceptable and that the US "won't tolerate any Canadian support for illegal groups in America." Obviously, he referred to increasing emigration of the American communists and socialists to Canada, from where they continued in their anti-government propaganda.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/1189/16canadaelectbc6.jpg
Canadian government denounced his words and said his speech was a "verbal aggression against the Canadian sovereignty". It suggested that "the US authorities have no business commenting the result of free elections in neighbouring countries". After that, the Canadian ambassador was recalled from the US and two Canadian divisions were relocated closer to the US borders. Needless to say relations between the two countries were seriously damaged.
The whole affair attracted some attention from the world press, which was otherwise focusing on the war in Europe. Editorials in British press mostly condemned the statement and many of them concluded that US can't be considered a democracy anymore, pointing at President's actions against freedom of press and speech in the last year. The new British prime minister sir Winston Churchill suggested with his usual lack of tact that America should "keep its nose out of the British Empire". He added that "if America needs to bully someone, it should look south where it has plenty of candidates." He was later strongly criticized for these comments.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/2882/17chinaoffensiveqf4.jpg
In April, the Nationalist Chinese forces started their long-awaited offensive. Wave after wave, Chinese soldiers crossed the Yellow river on small boats, supported only by their determination to drive the evil aggressors out of their country. At first, they suffered terrible casualties, but they eventually managed to form bridgeheads and force the Japanese to retreat. After three weeks, Japanese forces were on the run.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/8908/18germanoffensivety6.jpg
In Europe, Germany also started its long-awaited offensive. After the victory in Norway, Germany concentrated its army along the borders with the Low countries. On May the 3rd, they declared war on the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg and invaded them. The plan was to flank the mighty Maginot line by moving through Belgium, unfortunately for Germany Hitler didn't approve Manstein's plan for operation Sichelschnitt, which would include breaking through Ardennes. As a result, German forces were stopped in Belgium, because the Allies were prepared for this alternative. The element of surprise was lost and the future of Germany now hanged in a balance...

Landon during one of his last public appearances
On July 20th, 1940, the whole nation was stunned by the news that the President collapsed in the Oval Office and was admitted to hospital. Press speculated about the nature of his condition, but only few knew the real reason behind his hospitalization. The truth was the President was slowly losing his mind. His paranoia was kept in secret only because he had almost never left the White House in the last few months and seldom made a public appearance. And when he made an appearance, he looked tired, his face was pale and his speech confused. Eventually, he stopped appearing at all and all press conferences were handled by his top advisors. The obvious question was what to do next.
http://www.authentichistory.com/1920s/music/images/Charles_Lindbergh_002.jpg
Charles Lindbergh
Charles Lindbergh, who advised the Presidents on matters concerning aviation and air warfare and who eventually become one of the most influential members of the administration, convinced others that the President can't return to his office, not in this condition. He secretly ordered his transfer to Western State Hospital, where he should remain until the end of his term in August. On a press conference on July 23rd, he explained that the President collapsed because of a sheer exhaustion from his work an wouldn't return to his office in following months. Frank Knox, his Vice President, would assume the presidency for the rest of his term.
http://www.wvarchitects.com/images/postcards/2004/Weston/Weston_State_Hospital_circa_1958_RP_c.jpg
Landon's new residence...
In fact, all the important decision were made by Lindbergh. Despite being one of the junior members of the administration, he quickly became one of the most influential ones. He joined the administration mainly because he was a popular figure, and the President needed a "popular figurehead" to represent him. The underlying reason was to appease the America First Committee, which he led. AFC had an interesting history. It started as a club of the most ardent isolationists who wanted to keep America out of war at all costs, but gradually changed into a pro-fascist party.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/Service_Cross_of_the_German_Eagle.JPG/180px-Service_Cross_of_the_German_Eagle.JPG
Lindbergh himself was a big admirer of Nazi Germany, in which he spend a lot of time. He even met Hermann Göring from whom he received a medal for his services to aviation. During the time when Lindbergh worked with Nobel Prize-winning French surgeon Dr. Alexis Carrel, he was introduced to eugenics and scientific racism. These ideas significantly influenced Lindbergh's opinions on fascism and Nazi Germany. Lindbergh also spent some time in the Soviet Union on a mission to evaluate the state of the Soviet air forces. His experiences only strengthened his anti-communist sentiments.
http://www.charleslindbergh.com/images2/am_first.jpg
Lindbergh on his party's meeting
Lindberg quickly became the actual leader of the whole nation. His youngness, fresh appearance and excellent rhetoric, so in contrast with Landon, quickly gained him even greater popularity among the American people. It was no surprise when he officially announced that he would run for president in the coming elections.
But there were issued which took precedence over the elections. Lindberg became Vice President and a Secretary of State, so he had to deal with international affairs. Thing were certainly changing in the world. America held its breath as Germany (with a help from Italy, Hungary and Romania who joined the "Axis Alliance") finally punched through Allied positions in northern France, flanked the Maginot line and forced France into surrender. In China, the Japanese forces were pushed back north and the Chinese forces reached the outskirts of Beijing which they had to evacuate in 1937.

After the flanking of Maginot line, the French resistance ceased
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/6009/22japanfinishedyt8.jpg
In China, Japanese had to retreat further north
As Secretary of State, he met with the German foreign minister Ribbentrop and negotiated a non-aggression pact, which was supposed to be a first step in normalization of relations with Germany. Logically, he had to refuse the "Destroyers for bases" deal proposed by Britain - it was obvious these ships would be used against Germany, which would jeopardize the American neutrality.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/945/20destroyersqh1.jpg
The deal was politely refused
It turned out that the elections were just a formality. Charles Lindbergh was the only credible candidate, and he won by a large margin. He was inaugurated shortly afterwards.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/3465/23usafascisttp2.jpg
Lindbergh's administration
Those who had hoped he would be less autocratic than his predecessor were terribly wrong. While Landon became an autocrat only because the Congress forced him to become one by its uncooperativeness, Lindbergh introduced his own ideological dimension into the American politics. As a supporter of the so-called "scientific racism", he immediately repealed 14th and 15th amendments to the US Constitution, which granted black Americans the right to vote. Surprisingly, the majority of white Americans didn't object to that. Unlike Nazis, he refused to persecute Jews and he strongly opposed any notions of extermination of the "inferior races". All he wanted was to prevent them from influencing the politics, and this was achieved by his changes in the Constitution.
http://www.logo-contest.com/dhslogo/logo4.gif
His relatively soft approach to black Americans and Jews contrasted with his treatment of Communists. He publicly labeled them "traitors" and promised to purge America of this "grave threat". For this purpose, he established the Department of Homeland Security. Soon, this department built many "re-education camps" in Alaska. The first prisoners were Communists who were arrested during the Landon's presidency, but others followed shortly. To prevent emigration to Canada, Lindbergh deployed guards along the border with Canada, who were ordered to arrest anybody trying to cross the border without permission.

The beginning of the New Year was marked by the end of one of the most brutal wars in recent history. The Chinese forces liberated Beijing and the world waited what would happen next. Will the Chinese invade Manchukuo?
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/7083/25chinabeijingbw1.jpg
Cooler heads prevailed and in few days Chiang Kai-shek granted an audience to the Japanese emissary. After short negotiations, a cease-fire was agreed. The bloodhed finally stopped, after at least 700,000 Japanese and 3 million Chinese deaths. For America, this was good news - it could finally stop sending supplies and use them for the US military instead.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/6240/24chinavictorylz4.jpg
The new American President, Charles Lindbergh, had a reason for optimism. American military was becoming a credible force again. 15 new marine divisions were trained, Army corps reinforced with Engineering brigades and Navy steadily reinforced with new destroyers and light cruisers. What was even more important, the economy was finally firing up after all that years of inactivity. It made it possible to invest more in the military. Being a former aviator, Lindbergh decided that the air force which was largely ignored by the previous administration must be expanded and modernized to suit the US Army's needs.
One of his first orders as President was to redeploy USS Ranger (CV) and USS Tuscaloosa (CA) to the Pacific. There were three reasons for that. Firstly, two new advanced aircrafts carriers were to be commissioned in summer; secondly, the ranges of these ships were inadequate and below the average of the remaining ships in the Carrier Task Force ALPHA and they'd only slow them down; thirdly, with the end of the Sino-Japanese War, the Japan Empire freed its hands and became more of a threat to the US, so the Pacific Fleet needed to be strengthened.
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3518/28redeploymentts2.jpg
Annual reports on military strength had finally begun to look good:
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/5593/26armycomparqj1.jpg
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/3007/27navalcomparna3.jpg
But Lindbergh certainly didn't want to sit in his office and just read reports. He wanted to act. Despite his sympathies for fascism, he was not a man of belligerent nature. He saw war between Western nations as unnecessary and wrong, because it only allowed the USSR, the real enemy of the Western people, to get stronger. Therefore he decided that America must leave its isolationist shell and become active on the world stage. As a first step, he would visit Europe, meet the leaders of the warring countries and attempt to negotiate peace between them.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4417/londoncp2.jpg
In spring, Lindbergh arrived to London and met with Churchill to discuss two major issues: peace with Germany and British raids on US merchant ships. The meeting was a disappointment. Churchill refused to meet any German representatives unless they carried a signed unconditional surrender. When Lindbergh said this is unrealistic, Churchill replied that the whole situation is unreal. As for the British raids on US ships, he maintained that Britain has a full authority to confiscate any US ship carrying material which could be used to aid German war effort. Lindberhg warned him, that such activities could be considered an act of war, but Churchill laughed into his face and ended the meeting. Disappointed, the President left for Berlin, where he met with Adolf Hitler.
Lindbergh didn't like him when he first met him in the 30's and he didn't like him now. Personally, he thought Hitler was a megalomaniac suffering from severe delusions, unfortunately he was the leader of Germany and there was nothing he could do about it. But Lindbergh now knew that his plans include much more than just a military expansion. US agents in Germany informed the President, that Hitler and some other Nazi officials had made plans to completely exterminate the Jewish population in Europe. When he saw the reports, he was paralyzed by their insanity. "No person with a sense of dignity of mankind can condone such treatment," he said to his aide. He knew Hitler wouldn't listen to appeals to his humanity, he was not capable of that. But there was one thing that Germany needed: oil. So he proposed a deal to Hitler: "If you want to get rid of Jews, let us take them and we will give you all the oil you need". Hitler initially refused, but his advisors eventually convinced him that without oil, any further expansion to the East is unthinkable.
When the President returned to America, the press dubbed the deal "Jews for Oil" and asked if this was the only thing he achieved in Europe. Despite the mocking tone of these articles, the history would remember Charles Lindbergh as the man who saved millions of people from death in concentration camps.

Yeah, in most of my previous games, China surrendered to Japan even though I tried to help it as much as I could (supplies, resources, divisions). I guess they were lucky this time :)
The downside is that Japan now moved most of its divisions to its home islands...

My first thought when I saw it here was that it would weaken them for a potential war against you, but then I suppose not being bogged down in China might open the way for some proper aggressive fighting in the Pacific :)

April was a good month for the US navy. Two new Essex-class aircraft carriers named USS Armageddon and USS Apocalypse were commissioned and assigned to the C.T.F. ALPHA. Together with two older carriers and 16 modern light cruisers and destroyers, C.T.F. ALPHA was the best the US navy had to offer. Grand Admiral Nimitz often lamented there is no war going on where he could prove that his flotilla can beat any enemy.

In Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the war continued to unfold. Few months later, Yugoslavia made its last mistake when it joined the Allies. The Axis powers then executed a swift punitive expedition, which ended with its occupation. Germany then created independent Croatian state. Romanian assistance was rewarded - Romania annexed Albania.

In North Africa, things were going bad for the Italians. Their initial offensive into Egypt was stopped and they were pushed back into Libya. British forces then started their own offensive and captured Cyrenaica. Desperate, Italians responded with an amphibious invasion of Palestine, from which they quickly advanced inland, capturing Jordan and parts of Iraq. British were forced to fight a two-front war, which stopped their advance in the West.

On 3rd May, a German submarine surfaced near the East Coast. Its captain hailed the nearest USN ship and asked for permission to come aboard. It turned out that it was on a top secret mission and that it carried a V.I.P. who had to meet with the President. Lindbergh was informed shortly afterwards and he gave the permission to land in New York, where he was at that time.

The V.I.P. was nobody else but the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Konstantin von Neurath, who came to America to discuss matters of grave importance.
He told the President that his Führer Adolf Hitler decided for an invasion of the USSR. Because of this he came to the US to discuss an US-German alliance against communism. Germany proposed a "division of labor": Germany would focus on the Eastern front and take care of the Soviets, while the US would deal with the Allies. Germany, as he explained, can't defeat the USSR without a help from an ideologically close and strong ally. Except Italy, the other German allies can't help much against the Allies who rule the seas. In return for the US assistance, Germany was prepared to trade secret blueprints of German tanks, aircrafts and other military equipment and give the US a free hand in the Western Hemisphere, Pacific and East Asia.

Konstantin von Neurath
Lindbergh personally liked the deal, but he wanted to consult his cabinet first. Except two, all advisors supported the Presidents suggestion to accept the German offer. He met von Neurath again and informed him of the cabinet's decision. Obviously pleased, von Neurath explained that the "Fall Barbarossa" would most likely begin in June. He suggested that the US officially announce the alliance few days afterwards and start its operations against the Allies. The President agreed.
The next day, Lindbergh met with his Chief of Staff, General MacArthur and ordered him to prepare a plan for war with the British Empire and its allies. But MacArthur knew such plan already exists. In the 20's, a series of plans were made for all possible situations. One of them was the "War Plan Red (http://www.glasnost.de/hist/usa/1935invasion.html)", which dealt with a war against Britain and Canada. The plan was a bit obsolete, but MacArthur thought that with few changes, it could still be useful.

Gen. MacArthur
As the original plan proposed, the first step would be an invasion of Canada, from which the British could invade the US itself. The US Marine Corps, covered by C.T.F. ALPHA, would capture Newfoundland and Labrador to deny the British the use of North American harbours. Another marine task force would land in Bermudas to secure the only remaining British naval base which could support operations in the central Atlantic. If executed properly, this plan would force the British out of North America in a few weeks at most. The president reviewed the plan and sanctioned it. He also got the priviledge of naming it - Operation Maple Leaf.

War in the East started later than was expected. Bad weather combined with some unspecified difficulties forced the Germans to postpone their attack. Plan Barbarossa was initiated on July the 18th, 1941. One day later, Finland declared war on the Soviet Union too and joined the Axis. The President immediately sent oil and supplies to this brave little nation. Finally, on 21st July, the United States of America formally joined the Axis alliance and declared war on the Allies and the USSR.

War with Canada
Military operations were started right after the formal declaration of war. The first target was Canada. According to the plan for Operation Maple Leaf, the US Army attacked along the whole border with Canada. Despite being overwhelmed, Canadians didn't run and resisted. Their army was small, but more advanced. Canadians hoped that if they delay the US infantry long enough, British reinforcements will come and save them. This was exactly what Americans wanted to prevent.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5896/36invasionam3.jpg
The main battle plan
At the same time the first American soldiers crossed the border, the US Marine Corps launched an amphibious invasion of Newfoundland and Bermuda Islands. British were caught by surprise and didn't offer any serious resistance. The 1st USMC captured Newfoundland on July 23rd and the 2nd USMC took Bermudas a day later. With these provinces in American hands, the British lost their most important naval bases in the North Atlantic. The threat of their direct intervention diminished.

In the West, things were not going so smoothly. Two US Army Corps advancing to Vancouver encountered a single Canadian armored division equipped with new generation medium tanks. Although the US forces eventually forced it to retreat, it inflicted heavy losses on the American armies.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8648/40vancouverup2.jpg
When the US motorized infantry corps reached the outskirts of Vancouver, Canadians launched a surprise counter-attack and defeated the motorized infantry before the slower regular infantry could come to its help. Both corps' were thus forced to retreat from British Columbia.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6831/42vanccounterattackdg9.jpg
This seriously complicated the MacArthur's plan for a swift victory in "Blitzkrieg" style. Vancouver was the last important province still held by Canadian military. It was unlikely that Canada would surrender if Vancouver remained in its hands. MacArthur ordered the two defeated corps to regroup and launch another attack. It was clear though, that the war wouldn't be over by August. Canadian morale was still high.

In the West, Halifax was captured on 28th and Montréal on 29th of July. On 30th, the US marines moved from Newfoundland and captured Labrador. By the 1st August, the US seized most of Canada's western provinces containing most of its industry and population.

Front lines on the 10th day of the war
The second Battle of Vancouver erupted on 5th August. Regrouped and reinforced, they once again crossed the border and advanced on Vancouver. But Canada had a surprise for them - a new armored division secretly deployed few days before the attack. US infantry, which was nearly defeated by one unprepared tank division few days ago, was quickly demoralized and the attack was stopped. Canadians rejoiced and celebrated their victory over superior US forces and the atmosphere in the atmosphere in the US High Command became grimmer.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6578/canadaposter3wj2.jpg
The commander of the XIV Corps was dismissed and replaced by Lt. Gen. Lewis, who was known to be a bit more aggressive. Still, the High Command wasn't sure if another attack could be launched against two armored division. Many generals now realized how terribly they underestimated the role of tanks in modern warfare. Patton was heard saying "I told ya". The nearest force which could reinforce the XIV Corps was the mechanized infantry corps stationed in Winnipeg. Reinforcements from the East Coast would travel there nearly a whole month, which was unacceptable.
Fortunately, Canadians made a huge mistake. Instead of defending Vancouver, they sent one armored division North to invade Alaska. Most likely they hoped to divert the US attention elsewhere, or they became overconfident. One way or another, it gave Americans an opportunity to launch one last offensive. This time they were successful. Canadian tanks were forced to retreat and the second armored division in the North was unable to return to Vancouver in time. Vancouver fell on 13th August.

Their armies were demobilized and their remaining territories occupied by the US military. The war in Canada was over after 23 days of fighting.

Winner Oct 17, 2007, 07:39 AM Episode VIII - The Ocean of Blood (August 1941 - March 1942)
After the victory in Canada, two major issues arose: What to do with Canada and where to attack next in the campaign against the Allies.
The first issue led to a series of heated discussions among members of the Lindbergh's War Cabinet. Three solutions were contemplated:
a) Annex Canada completely and garrison it with US troops
b) Annex only the English-speaking provinces of Canada and set up a puppet government in Quebec
c) Liberate Canada as a satellite state of the United States.
The President was in favor of the third option, although the rest of his Cabinet leaned towards the first two. It was argued, that a complete annexation would drain US resources, since it was expected that Canadians would soon begin to form guerilla groups in the vast wilderness in the North. Also, liberation of Quebec was thought to be a liability. The final decision was postponed because there were more serious matters which needed attention.
Everybody was delighted with the victory in Canada, but the President knew it was just the beginning of a long and difficult war. Britain suffered only minimal losses and continued to kick the Italians out of North Africa and the Middle East. The President asked the Chiefs of Staff for plans for further offensives against the Allied forces. Three different plans were made.
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7082/map1io2.jpg
- The first one proposed an "Island Hopping" campaign in the Caribbean, with the aim of taking all islands which could serve as a base of operations for the Royal Navy. After that, the US forces would be transported to Liberia and then either head for Europe, or attack the British and French colonies in Africa.
- The second one counted with invasion of Greenland, where a naval base would be constructed. From Greenland, the US forces would invade Iceland and then Britain itself.
- The third approach was the most radical - forget about the North and the South and cross the Atlantic right away, use German-occupied France as a staging area and invade Britain from there.
Lindbergh liked all three plans, so he proposed the following solution: US forces in the Atlantic region would be split into the Joint Task Force North and Joint Task Force South. JTF North would capture Greenland and Iceland and prepare itself for an invasion of Britain. JTF South would secure the Caribbean, but stop in Guyana. After the US navy clears the Atlantic of the Royal Navy threat, JTF South would be transported to France and aid the invasion of Britain.
Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Nimitz finally took his precious C.T.F. Alpha to the open sea. In the North Atlantic he encountered a British fleet and attacked it. After a short engagement the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal was sunk. After this battle the Royal Navy moved closer to the shores of Britain, leaving only few ships in Atlantic. This made it easier to capture Greenland by the end of August. Construction of a naval base there started immediately, but the climate made it difficult to finish it before the end of the year.

In September, the 2nd US Marine Crops landed on Bahamas and captured all the islands in just three weeks. The soldiers knew they must act quickly, before the British realize what's going on and send reinforcements. The next step were Small Antilles, where they landed early in October.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3338/50bahamasal3.jpghttp://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3969/51antillesku0.jpg
Conquest of Antilles was finished in November and in December, the last stage of the southern campaign began, when the 2nd USMC took Guyana Surinam and the French Guyana. US didn't plan to occupy this part of the world, so a puppet Free Guyana was created. Allied forces in Caribbean were wiped out, unable to threaten the US from this area.

Unfortunately for the Axis, this victory couldn't make up for the catastrophic defeat of the Italian army in North Africa. Italians managed to save as many divisions as they could, but their losses were terrible. Together with their losses in the Middle East, they lost about 2/3 of their army and stopped being a relevant force in the war. What was worse, their victory made it possible to move their troops elsewhere. It was clear that the US must act fast, if Britain should ever be defeated.

In January 1941, C.T.F. Alpha (reinforced with two new Essex-class carriers, USS Doomsday and USS End of Days) set sail for Europe. After short meeting with the President, the German ambassador enabled the US Navy to use Brest, one of the major ports in Northern France. From there, Grand Admiral Nimitz planned to strike at the British fleet hiding in the Irish Sea. With Royal Navy on the run, the JTF North would commence an invasion of Iceland, the necessary last step before the invasion of Britain.
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/845/57sailnl5.jpg
In February, C.T.F. Alpha met Royal Navy in two great battles. In the Battle of St. George's Channel, Royal navy lost a light carrier HMS Argus. The rest of the fleet managed to escape. The second battle was epic - on February 11th 7:00 AM, the US fleet met the pride of the British navy - the famous Home fleet. In this battle, the British suffered the heaviest losses so far. Three battleships, two battlecruisers and one carrier were destroyed. US navy didn't lose any ship in this battle. The greater was the shock when naval bombers from Britain attacked the damaged USS Victor and sank it. After this tragedy, Nimitz ordered the fleet to leave the Irish Sea and dock in Brest for repairs.
