View Full Version : World Domination
D0MINATRIX Oct 09, 2007, 10:21 PM First of all, I would like to credit the existence of this thread to Quintillus' Greek World Conquest, which inspired me to make this thread. Here's the link to it:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=214983
I have uploaded the file (hope it works, 1st upload!)
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/124581/What_Civ3_Should_Be_like-World_Map.biq (http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/124581/What_Civ3_Should_Be_like.zip)
I modified some stuff, like govts are a bit altered, very low corruption, units altered (especially bombard strength), some can be drafted, culture flipping is altered, spy missions as well, and retain culture on capture is on. I may have forgotten some stuff, and if I mention anything abnormal in my posts, just go with the flow.
EDIT:The link has been altered to link to the new and improved version of the map.
NOTE: I may take awhile between posts, so sorry if the suspense is too great:) .
My civ preference would be the chinese, but you people can decide for yourselves who I should be.
Tasslehoff Oct 10, 2007, 08:24 PM What level are you playing on?
D0MINATRIX Oct 10, 2007, 08:43 PM What level are you playing on?
Warlord. I like Warlord. However, I might try the next level (it would be my first game on it:undecide: ), what's it called again? I'll tell you what I decide on in the end.
Tasslehoff Oct 10, 2007, 10:02 PM Regent. I suggest trying it out on Regent. It's the level Quintillius is playing at. You can do it! :)
D0MINATRIX Oct 10, 2007, 11:40 PM Aye. I will attempt regent.:undecide:
"Do not judge those who try and fail, judge only those who fail to try." -I have no clue who
Aabraxan Oct 11, 2007, 09:06 AM Warlord. I like Warlord. However, I might try the next level (it would be my first game on it:undecide: ), what's it called again?
Yes, it's Regent and it's the level at which the AI build rate is the same as yours. This (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/infocenter/#levels) might also prove useful. I say go for it. :goodjob:
Sanotra Oct 11, 2007, 05:34 PM Surely if you remember his conquests, you may be able to remember mine way back when. Sure the idea sounds awesome at first, but you get into it, and you may find yourself waiting 7 minutes for your turn to be up.
D0MINATRIX Oct 11, 2007, 08:02 PM Heck, I can wait 7 minutes for it to be my turn.
BTW, Regent it is, and in the file I believe that I forgot to make swordsman replacements draftable (D'oh!), so just FYI.
Sanotra Oct 13, 2007, 08:27 AM Lol you think that now ;) Good luck in any case.
d.highland Oct 14, 2007, 07:40 AM I would personally pick Ottomans, but it's your choice in the end.
D0MINATRIX Oct 22, 2007, 08:24 PM Ok, the poll expires in 4 or 5 days, and it looks like I'm going to be Persia or Scandinavia.
lucashp Oct 23, 2007, 05:28 PM Or the ottomans...So what happens if it doesnt work? Make another poll with these 3?
Tasslehoff Oct 23, 2007, 07:23 PM I think it would be time to bring in the 'ol dice.
D0MINATRIX Oct 23, 2007, 11:34 PM Yeah, I guess. I've never seen this before, but the funny thing is that playing as the Persians and the Ottomans is very similar because the only differences between them are city names and UUs. The Vikings might be fun though, I like berserks:D
CommandoBob Oct 24, 2007, 02:19 PM With the Vikings you have an early Marine unit, which can help with beachheads, invasions and pillaging raids. It is most effective on maps with a lot of coastline.
The Sipahi is a stronger Cavalry, attacking with 8 instead of 6 and costing 100 instead of 80 shields.
The Ansar Warrior is a modified Knight. It has the same movement as Cavalry (3 MP), but is slightly more fragile than the standard Knight, since it defends with 2 instead of 3. The AW costs 70 shields; the standard Knight costs 60 shields.
Knights come with Chivalry, an early Middle Age tech; Cavalry comes with Military Tradition, a late Middle Age tech. Both are optional techs, too.
I would favor the Arabs. I think that AWs upgrade to Cavalry. So you could consider them Light Cavalry, since they attack with 4. This would allow you to dominate the entire Middle Ages, not just the last part of it. A unit that can move three times and attack is quite handy to have.
lucashp Oct 25, 2007, 03:24 AM Ottomans! Bah! Is It to late to bid 50 on the ottomans? :p
Aabraxan Oct 25, 2007, 08:28 AM The Sipahi is a stronger Cavalry, attacking with 8 instead of 6 and costing 100 instead of 80 shields.

Just to add one small wrinkle to Cbob's fine analysis: There's also the Chinese Rider to consider. A 70-shield, 4.3.3 Knight replacement that upgrades to Cavalry. Yes, it comes with an early, optional MA tech (Chivalry), but it's frequently the first 3-move unit on the ground. It's worth considering, at any rate.
D0MINATRIX Oct 25, 2007, 01:09 PM However, it seems that the middle ages go by quite fast on this mod. Try it and you'll see. So the Ottomans would actually be my best choice here.:D
RickFGS Oct 25, 2007, 01:30 PM Go Carthage!!! Industrial is excellent, seafaring is a must in that map, num mercs are usable till Cavalry/Marines come along.
Marsden Oct 25, 2007, 02:28 PM Bob, knights are 70 sheilds. Answar are 60, so they're faster and cheaper.
I voted Vikings, I want to see pillaging.
Quintillus Oct 25, 2007, 04:14 PM I also voted Vikings; the Berserkergang have the best attack of any unit until Cavalry, and aren't surpassed until Tanks. Not only that, but they are amphibious. Plus, what's cooler than Viking domination?
I also noticed they're 55 shields in this scenario - all the better for a Berserk Earth! That's pretty close to the 40 for Longbows and 60 for Knights. Quite a few Modern Age changes, too - Paratroopers actually look halfway decent for a change! And the Great Library working until Scientific Method should be interesting.
D0MINATRIX Oct 25, 2007, 04:45 PM Yeah, I changed the GLiB because why on earth should EDUCATION render a LIBRARY useless:confused: !?!? Before I play I may edit my first post one final time to fix some problems mentioned by others, so stay tuned:D
choxorn Oct 25, 2007, 10:26 PM Vikings are teh roxors!!!!! :viking:
D0MINATRIX Oct 25, 2007, 10:34 PM If it's a tie I choose using a coin flip (2 out of 3), and I WILL be fair about it.
choxorn Oct 25, 2007, 10:45 PM I like the World Map used for the scenario, but I don't suppose you could have edited it to include Volcanoes and Marshes (as well as fix some of the things like Sahkalin Island being attached to Japan). :p
One question: Why did you choose 22 civs?
D0MINATRIX Oct 26, 2007, 10:11 AM Well, for the map part, I know I would have messed it up if I altered it (I'm not too good with terrain), so I left everything as is, and anyway the Sahkalin Island is just like Sicily, pretty close to the other landmass that troops could just cross in roughly-made boats.
About the 22 civs, that's just how many good starting locations there are, I don't want there to be sucky civs in sucky spots.
D0MINATRIX Oct 26, 2007, 10:16 AM If you want the map and you have PTW, just go to Civ-Content and find Marla Singer's World Map 1.17, but I know that from Complete, so it may be different in other versions. If this is the case, just search for it on the maps forum, it'll be there somewhere.
choxorn Oct 26, 2007, 03:59 PM You could have put civs in mildly sucky spots.
And I don't think it was wise to put 2 starting locations 5 tiles from each other, which you did 3 times.
D0MINATRIX Oct 26, 2007, 04:28 PM Where? Europe? The only civ locations I placed were: Chile in South America; Carthage in North Africa; Philippines; Australia; West Africa. The rest come with the map.
choxorn Oct 26, 2007, 04:53 PM Then, in that case, it's Marla Singer's fault.
It's only the Historically accurate starting locations. 2 of them in North America are 5 tiles from each other, and 2 in Europe (one in England, one in France) are 5 tiles from each other.
Although, the one you put in Carthage is 5 tiles from the one Marla put in Italy.
D0MINATRIX Oct 27, 2007, 08:47 PM Well Carthage is across the sea, so that doesn't really matter, and I've played this map enough to know that Europe will be very powerful even if it lacks an empire. I've attached the final version of the map in my first post, so just DL it again from the link. The first part is coming soon! (drumroll)
D0MINATRIX Oct 27, 2007, 10:15 PM This sucks completely! My PC crashed:mad:  , and it doesn't seem as if I will be able to play Civ3 for a couple of months. Sorry that this is so last-minute, but when I tried to load the mod I got a blue screen and it hasn't yet been able to restart. Worse, the Civ3 disk is stuck inside and it's one of those slot-loading ones where you can't just eject it, so that sucks too:mad: . Sorry for the letdown everyone, but I still can post from my macs, and I have one PC that can't play Civ3 for some technical reason, but I can still edit the scenario from there, so it's not all bad. Once again, this sucks and I regret the terrible letdown. This is why I like Macs more than PCs:mad: .
choxorn Oct 27, 2007, 10:43 PM Aw, that sucks.
D0MINATRIX Oct 27, 2007, 10:50 PM Tell me about it:rolleyes: .
Lord_Megahertz Oct 28, 2007, 07:06 PM That sucks. PCs can be so stupid sometimes. At least you can still make changes to your scenario.
choxorn Dec 22, 2007, 10:47 AM Your PC working yet? :)
D0MINATRIX Dec 22, 2007, 04:13 PM Nope. But even if it does I won't be playing many mods, because I have traced the cause to a virus somewhere on my drive that only comes up in certain mods. I'd have to get a new drive because this is one wicked virus, but I now understand how to beat it. I don't think that this story is going to float.:(
choxorn Dec 22, 2007, 04:24 PM :( Sorryn to hear that. I was looking forward to this, it sounded exciting. :(
D0MINATRIX Dec 23, 2007, 10:04 AM The old man reclined in his chair, and drew a puff of smoke from his pipe. He exhaled slowly, then turned to his grandchildren and told them: "And that, young'uns, is why I prefer Macs."
