Gyprsn
Oct 15, 2007, 10:04 PM
On Saturday I have to test 7:30 to 11:30 AM (MST, GMT -7 I think?). So this may need to be kept in mind? If the game has to take place within this time I guess I'll just have to miss it :/

EDIT: I doubt I can make 2 pm GMT work, a little later however would probably be fine, considering that Khmer doesn't come in until around 600 CE anyway.

dionysos2048
Oct 16, 2007, 02:03 AM
I really can't guarantee I'll make it, especially at that time on a Saturday. My relationship wouldn't survive it... Count me out for now.

I'll be doing my PFT on saturday morning, so I might arrive later than everybody else. Send me the DL on friday though, and I'll be there. I'll do Persia if I get on earlier, America if I'm late.

Rhye
Oct 16, 2007, 12:08 PM
for your information, I've run into a last minute problem.
I hope I can fix it by the 20th

Ah, and for the civs to use, it's better if we use the ones of the 600AD start:
China, Japan, Vikings.......up to Turkey
So that the wait won't be long.

Zhuge_Liang
Oct 16, 2007, 12:38 PM
Nice idea Rhye!

Psyringe
Oct 16, 2007, 12:39 PM
Okay, I'd switch from India to the Vikings then.

Edit: Btw, since some people have reported OOS errors on multiplayer after upgrading to 3.13 - I suggest that each participant tries to take part in a "normal" muliplayer game until Saturday, just to check that it works for him. If it doesn't, then a complete reinstall seems to solve the issue.

We should try to make sure that everything's working fine on our side, so that *if* we run into trouble, we can at least be sure that the trouble is RFC-related, and not some patch-introduced multiplayer instability that Rhye can't do much about.

Not sure but I have school. Night shift that time and after that day, special day for our school because 2 months ago, the electric wires are out and left us with a one week vacation.

By the command of our principal, he ordered classes to be resumed every sat and sun for the next 5 weeks.

2AM?

I actually said 2PM.

Why MSN? Not everyone has MSN (and some people specifically don't *want* to have it. ;) )

Suggestion: Just PM the the information to the people who want to participate. This forum has a nice PM feature, and everyone can use it, so there's no need to resort to third party programs imho.

Rhye
Oct 19, 2007, 05:24 AM
It's confirmed, tomorrow at 1:45 PM GMT i'll post the link here.
You should install it as an additional mod named "Rhye's and Fall MP". Of course you must have BTS updated to 3.13

We can now play
- direct IP (after you load the mod, Multiplayer -> Direct IP -> write the IP of the host and Connect)
- lobby (after you load the mod Multiplayer -> Internet Games -> Login. You must register an account if you haven't yet. But it will make chatting easier for those without a messaging program)
Both are working, let me know which one you prefer.

the confirmed players, as far as I know:

starters:
Radunz China
Rhye Japan
Psyringe Vikings
memdee Arabia
-----
late comers:
1-Gyprsn Khmer
2-Theodorick Germany
3-Lokolus Russia
4-BobIII Netherlands
5-Rishubhav Portugal

HINT: Spain and France start quite early, if you don't want to wait....

Gyprsn
Oct 19, 2007, 05:43 PM
Question: We're doing the 600 AD rather than 3000 BC? If so, it might be best if I take a later Civ considering that Khmer starts considerably early in 600 AD. And that in about 4 hours time a lot can happen. I would prefer to give as little power to an AI controlling my civ as possible...If that is reasonable to say :/

NOTE: If all else fails, I may just not be able to make it :/

Rhye
Oct 19, 2007, 05:59 PM
fyi, it'll be possible to switch to any AI controlled civ, anytime. There are no strict rules

starters:
Radunz China
Rhye Japan
Psyringe Vikings
memdee Arabia
-----
late comers:
1-Jet Spain
2-dionysos2048 France
3-Śmarth England
4-Theodorick Germany
5-Lokolus Russia
6-BobIII Netherlands
7-Rishubhav Portugal

scu98rkr ?
Gyprsn ?

Jet
Oct 19, 2007, 06:06 PM
For the late comers, is there a way to join the game so that you control your civ right from the turn it spawns? That would be helpful for people who want full control over the location of their capital and civics.

Whether or not we get our civs from the very first turn, how will we know when to connect? Maybe that is a good reason to make it a lobby game. We could get there a little early, wait in the lobby, and someone can tell us when to join.

Bob III
Oct 19, 2007, 09:21 PM
I'll be around at 8:45am tomarrow morning (Eastern time, Daylight savings), downloading and waiting for my civ to come into the game.

Gyprsn
Oct 20, 2007, 12:35 AM
I'll aim to make it in time to at least play the Turks. Unless through some stroke of luck I get there early enough to be Khmer, because chances are if I pick up the Khmer after the AI has had control over it for a significant number of years, it will be collapsing and have missed the UHV conditions.

Italy is on Daylight Saving Time right now. GMT has no daylight saving time. So at the moment, you (and me in Berlin too) are at GMT +2.

Psyringe
Oct 20, 2007, 07:28 AM

Edit: Here's an online GMT clock (http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx)

In Italy generally people call what you refer to UTC and GMT is used to indicate British Time. It also makes much more sense to me *shrug*

Śmarth
Oct 20, 2007, 08:02 AM

Okay, so I guess we'll call it a day and try at another time. Here's my personal summary:

- Playing with up to 4 players went well.
- However, any player with a slow connection slows down gameplay for all others
- Playing with more than 4 players led to a lot of lag, but it's unclear whether this is due to the number of players alone, or due to the fact that one of those players was had a very slow connection.
- Some players had different files from the others (e.g., Bhruic's patch installed). It is unclear whether this played a role in bringing us out of sync.
- We had one player who couldn't connect over Gamespy, and who couldn't have others connect to him over direct IP, although his firewalls were switched off and/or properly configured to his best knowledge.

I suggest to retry the experiment in a more controlled setting, to make it easier to find what's causing problems. For example: Host a game with only people who have a good connection (to rule out one slow player as the source of problems), and who have identical files (to rule out modded files as a possible source of problems), then start with 4 players, and add others as long as speed seems decent. Then report up to how many players you could go.

Another thing that might be worth trying is to play the game for a number of turns with some players, and then restart and play the same game with the same number of players, but all Independents and AIs removed. This could be a way to test whether RFC simply has to much going on to make it viable for more players at once.

I also asked in the Gamespy lobby which experiences people had with huge maps in multiplayer. I was told that one shouldn't try with more than 7 players because of the expected lag.

Alternatives to play with more players might be PbeM or LAN play, but this (again) would have to be tested.

According to several posts in the multiplayer forum, I am not alone with my problem of "connecting to peer..." forever.
It seems to be a general civ4 problem, apparently worsened by the last patch, and it has nothing to do with firewall configuration. Or, to be more exact, if the firewall is configured correctly, the problem still exists for quite a lot of users.

At least it doesn't seem like it's a RFC-related problem.

edit: Also, fyi, it seems that the problem rarely is on the side of the user encountering those problems, but rather caused by incorret firewall/router configuration of other users (port 2056 MUST be forwarded/opened for every player in order to cause no problems for other users). Unfortunately, I can't give you any guarantee on that due to lack of testing :(

Good summary. Another remark: at my computer, even with 4 players the lag was somewhat difficult to play with, and that was in the medieval era with few units and no war. I suspect it would be more difficult in later eras, unfortunately.

- We had one player who couldn't connect over Gamespy, and who couldn't have others connect to him over direct IP, although his firewalls were switched off and/or properly configured to his best knowledge.

There is a huge amount of factors that involve internet connections, it's not just the two endpoints to take into consideration.

I also asked in the Gamespy lobby which experiences people had with huge maps in multiplayer. I was told that one shouldn't try with more than 7 players because of the expected lag.

I would also take into consideration the physical location of players.

Alternatives to play with more players might be PbeM or LAN play, but this (again) would have to be tested.

Well, LAN is no different from DirectIP... the main difference though is that you can indeed look at the end points here, unless some unlikely problems with cabling and switches.

2056 is a port that must be opened on the host end, but where are its replies sent ? Are we sure this port is used for both the source and destination address ? For example when you contact a web site you call the server on port 80 but as a source port on which the webserver will answer you, you send a random port number of the highest range. I could connect to Psyringe and since he doesn't know my IP he did not do anything to allow me rather than you, so the problem must indeed be on your side, and not necessarily your router, it could be the routing between your 2 ISPs.

I have forwarded the request to open a new subforum for MP.
In there you will have freedom to arrange any game you want (you're free here as well, for now!)

For now, this is the most recent version.
Every time I post one, you should delete the old (MP!) one you've gt already installed

Make sure you all read the readme, it's important

Memdee, did you open the UDP or TCP port ?
"Civilization IV will have problems negotiating through 2 levels of network address translation", is your public IP on the router the same you have when you navigate outside your ISP ? (check www.ripe.net on the top right to see your IP).

memdee
Oct 21, 2007, 06:35 AM
I opened up both TCP and UDP.

And yes, it sure is the same IP.

Oh, and my connection did work for some of you guys yesterday - I had no problems connecting to you, for example.

onedreamer

I'm pretty sure it's the routing between the 2 ISPs, for example a double NAT on one side or both could create problems depending on the configuration of the ISPs border routers. In my case if I had a router I would not have the same IP outside my ISP because it further NATs my IP.
Btw, shall we meet in the lobby ? ;)

Wait............ I hosted a game like 12 people and there's a lag just in the modern age. It's not just like more than 4 Players.

@onedreamer

No thanks, for me because my history teacher wasn't satisfied with the score that my classmates have and also, I have assignments like in all aspects of the subjects.

Hope it will be well.

Wow, that was an intense game.

I was Japan, having the UHV requirement to be 1st in score in 1500, and I missed it by 15 points against Jet (Carthage).
That's when we called it a day and decided Jet had won the match :)

Btw, we had Scientific Method in 1450, and I believe Jet had Rifling, too...

memdee
Oct 21, 2007, 01:08 PM
All in all, I think we had three OOS-errors, and we discovered that when someone tries to reconnect, the others should not choose "wait for player" because that will cause the reconnecting player not to be able to chose a civ and therefore get stuck in the process of reconnecting.

But, apart from that, everything went well, as far as I remember.

edit: And, personally, I love the "simplified" plague mechanics :P

edit2: One more thing: onedreamer switched to Turkey when they spawned, and I think what he said was that he didnt have any gunpowder units. Intended?

Jet
Oct 21, 2007, 01:09 PM
We did have occasional intermittent OOSes from different people, but for the most part they could reconnect and fix it. It was generally playable.

Edit: ha! I played on a bit by myself, and Rome finally collapsed just now (1555).

Ah, not the mod.
yeah of course.
But here the scale of the world and the complexity of the code is much bigger. We've proved it.
4 isn't the best number for performance (would be 2) but is still playable and allows a 2v2

I have seen most earth games launch with 12-14 (some with with 18). The host just has to be a rock solid host with a great system.

I want to try playing a game on the new RFC MP.

I wouldnt doubt that we should be able to get at least 10 players to play the mod without large amounts of lag (AS LONG AS EVERYONE CLOSED PROGRAMS AND DIDNT ALT-TAB). The same rules that we use for earth games should apply when playing this mod in mp.

However, I wont play direct IP games because i have seen way to many crash because for any reason host would have to rejoin the game will crash (nothing worse then wasting 8 hours of work because host cant rejoin and rehost wont work).

onedreamer
Oct 27, 2007, 01:11 AM
rehost WOULD work. If the "host" crashes anyone can save and rehost, or you can continue anyways, this because direct IP doesn't work as a client-server application.
