View Full Version : Request for minor change to the raw commerce/production city section
Bursk Oct 17, 2007, 05:58 PM Like all good mod users, I had a quick non-read of the documention and was off using the mod.
I like the ability to see the raw commerce or production of a city, but I was initially quite confused by this hammer icon that appeared next to the raw commerce info. "Why is that hammer there?" I asked myself. "What's it got to do with commerce?"
After playing for an hour or so I had the bright idea to click on said hammer, and to my surprise it changed to a coin icon, as well as changing the commerce info to production info. So at least now I know what it does.
Thing is, it would make much more sense to me to have a coin displayed when you're viewing the commerce, and a hammer displayed when you're viewing the production. It would basically mean that coin = commerce and hammer = production. Seems more logical to me.
If you don't wish to make this change to the mod, is there any way that I can easily do it myself?
Psyringe Oct 17, 2007, 07:39 PM Hmm, I guess that the confusion arises because the hammer doesn't really look like a button (although it acts like one). On first sight it looks like it has something to do with the numbers next to it, as if the middle number was related to production.
Changing the hammer to a coin would imho be counter-intuitive with regards to its usage. Why should clicking on a coin switch my display mode to production?
Making the hammer look like a proper button (i.e. giving it the "light brown circle" background) would probably make it easier to guess its function even without reading the docs. At least it would encourage curious users to click on it, at which point its function becomes clear. But I don't know how hard that's to do - if it isn't easy, it might not be worth the effort. I'd regard it as a minor, cosmetic issue, it certainly isn't a showstopper. ;)
Minor Annoyance Oct 17, 2007, 08:59 PM Yeah I've been using the mod for a few weeks and I didn't know it was a button until recently.

It is a button, so it has to show what happens clicking on it...
if it is a coin, people who don't read the docs probably will never find its use ;)
I agree that having an icon which looks more as a button will be better, but I fear that it's not so easy.
EmperorFool Oct 18, 2007, 12:40 AM You guys basically worked through my thought process when I added the button. BTW, I added the production view to Sevo's commerce view and didn't want to spend a lot of time rearranging the fields, so a little "button" (that is really just a text field) was easiest.
I initially made it a coin but figured, "why would anyone think to click on a label". Thus, I made it a hammer thinking "it may cause confusion, but that will likely prompt someone to click on it." :) So it worked!
That being said, while working on the CDA I found that the buttons aren't that hard to create. Well, I knew that, but I learned that the "pretty gold" buttons aren't that hard. So I'll spend a little time this week or weekend seeing if I can switch it. I totally agree that a button would be better.
@Minor Annoyance - It's actually an intelligence test and, um, well . . . here, have a cookie. :p
EmperorFool Oct 23, 2007, 02:45 AM I spoke too soon about the button. Buttons are easy if you have a graphic, but the :commerce: and :hammers: icons are font glyphs.
So what I've done is put both icons in the button; the one being shown in the screen is larger than the other one. Try it out -- it's in SVN.
Bursk Oct 25, 2007, 02:29 PM That sounds like a good solution. Thanks for addressing this.
