View Full Version : Demanding Peace

as just about anybody who's read one of my rambles knows, i'm not generally in the mood for massive warmongering. i do WHEOOHRN checks often, and i'm paranoid.

pre-BtS, when i was about to attack someone i'd make an arrogant demand for their cash, since it's better for me to have it for upgrades than them. but now there's a 10-turn peace treaty in place when those demands (or ones for techs or maps) are agreed to. i used to not like that change, until...

my current game mehmed was going to attack me. he was building up a super-scary stack of doom near a city of mine that had about nothing. then i got an idea. he's pleased with me, so i asked him very sweetly to spare his world map for a friend. they consider that worth about 5g if you already have a recent version, so he said yes.

i didn't care about the map at all. i wanted a guaranteed 10 turns to get ready! it worked like a charm, 11 turns later he declared but by then it was okay. and meantime i'd signed a DP with darius, who serves as a buffer for all but two of my cities, so mehmed declares on me -> darius declares on mehmed -> mehmed's SoD gets teleported far away from the city that was in the most danger. yay!

i just did that again with zara. he's at WHEOOHRN, he likes me but not much more than he likes the others. i'm the weakest in power by far, and already at war, so my guess is he'll go for me. but he just donated his world map, so i'm safe for 10 turns at least ;).

this kinda feels dirtier than the "give me all your money ... oh, you said yes, but it won't help you, this means war!" thing i used to do. but in this game that hasn't stopped me from doing it. does that make me evil?

So just to clear this up, does the ten turn treaty occur if you have a two-way transaction, or just a demand and give transaction ??

Secondly, I wonder how long the decision to Dow lasts for the AI before they do it. I know that we can be declared on at friendly because the AI decided to do it at pleased, and then became friendly, but the wheels were alreasdy in motion.

In the case with Cyrus as buddy, you would think Mehemed would see the danger and cancel his war plans. He either didnt mind the DP , or his decision to Dow applied after more than 10 turns.

no, but sounds like a major exploit. Pretty creative though.

the treaty kicks in on any request for help or arrogant demand that was agreed to. the ones where they come up to you but there's no trade on their side, just yours. and when you do a trade and ask "can you spare this for a friend" or "we demand you give us X in tribute". the peace treaty shows up as an active deal and counts for both sides, 10 turns. it doesn't kick in for resource deals, two way tech trades, or if you give them a gift they didn't ask for.

i think they don't even consider changing their minds if you sign a DP that close to the date they were going to declare, but i don't really know. i literally signed the DP the turn before the peace treaty expired, just in case mehmed actually attacked darius instead of me. i didn't want to defend him, i wanted him defending me!

"major exploit"?? he was going to try to beat me up ! extreme measures were called for :mischief:

Thanks Kmad . I dont see it as an exploit. Buying time to be better prepared sounds quite realistic.

hmmz. so i requested zara's world map, and that gave us a peace treaty. he was definitely WHEOOHRN then, that's why i did it. a couple turns later he came by and asked me to convert to conf (he'd sent me some missionaries a while ago). i have CR, so i said yes to get on his good side. now he doesn't have enough on his hands, yay!

It's what you're famous for , playing the game smarter.

I'm going to use this technique more.
