View Full Version : Football Manager 2008 - Released!
Elta Oct 19, 2007, 05:18 AM And only 30 bucks! + I can put it on my Mac :king:
Hearts of Iron 2 or Football manager .... this will be tough.
:(
I am in between jobs so I am on a budget right now :(
Hitti-Litti Oct 19, 2007, 09:54 AM Goodbye, life. I didn't know you well, and I'll never will.
steviejay Oct 19, 2007, 06:54 PM Yup, it draws you in.
Personally I'd go for FM08 but HoI2 is relatively cheap from what I've seen so it depends on how much spare collateral you want to have at the end of the day.
Keep an eye out for Kleberson at the start of the game, he's available for nothing.
Maniacal Oct 19, 2007, 06:57 PM I don't give a rat's butt about these games, but I'm curious, what's the difference between each year besides the rosters?
steviejay Oct 20, 2007, 04:17 AM They tweak some things, change the engine, update certain aspects of the game which peopole didn't like from last eyar, stuff like that.
steviejay Oct 20, 2007, 04:52 AM Hopefully Kan is subscribed to this thread

Please? [pray]
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 20, 2007, 12:59 PM You bastard. You bastard...
I shall purchase tomorrow, and will enact my revenge!
Hitti-Litti Oct 20, 2007, 02:37 PM I shall get mine on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Before that I'll plan my master tactics on winning CL with MyPa(and that will take awfully long time...)!
steviejay Oct 20, 2007, 03:56 PM I always play my first game as Rangers, just to try it out. I'll try a Championship team next then probably an Italian game cause I like going Lazio :)
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 21, 2007, 09:28 AM http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/1667/fm01nm3.jpg
Low blow I admit, but I won't be starting a proper game until later this week, and I needed to counter with something
Looking forward to getting back into a new FM. I'm already confused by the hotlinks to messages and what not being at the top of the screen rather than at the bottom. There's also a rather large amount of white, it seems.
Hitti-Litti Oct 21, 2007, 10:54 AM ^^
:rotfl:
"... there is no chance they will ever see eye to eye."
steviejay Oct 21, 2007, 11:13 AM Heh that's truey awesme. Let the games begin ;)
One thing I have noticed is that about a quarter way through the season, Celtic try to get a new chairman, so you might get quite the war chest to spend in the january window.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 21, 2007, 12:32 PM Heh that's truey awesme. Let the games begin ;)
End of first season results in our respective games to decide the winner? ;)
steviejay Oct 21, 2007, 02:06 PM heh, ok, I accept the challenge. Most points after all games played?
and lets not count champions league results cause I got beat 3-1 and 3-0 against Chelsea and then I've got Real in the next round.....
Celtic naturally, didn't qualify *titter*
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 21, 2007, 02:15 PM Sounds decent enough. We'll consider any additional trophies and achievements a bonus.
Feel free to start the season afresh, if you like. I won't be starting until tonight at the earliest, but more likely Tuesday.
Hitti-Litti Oct 21, 2007, 03:50 PM I'll join it as MyPa. I win if I win the UEFA Cup. :D
Hitti-Litti Oct 23, 2007, 04:29 AM Yay! I have it!
You all, buy Mika Ääritalo. He is way too good in this compared to RL. Also Jukka Lehtovaara and Patrik Lomski appear to be much better in this. The one who scouted TPS surely wasn't honest, he greatly overrates it.
Darth_Pugwash Oct 23, 2007, 04:43 AM I don't give a rat's butt about these games, but I'm curious, what's the difference between each year besides the rosters?
Only the hardcore nuts buy the new one every year. Most people buy one then wait afew years until they buy another, so they get the cumulative effects of 2-3 iterations of the game when they buy a new one instead of the baby step changes that happen year to year.
Or at least, that's what I do/did.
Maniacal Oct 23, 2007, 05:04 AM ^^

"... there is no chance they will ever see eye to eye."
It's probably mostly due to Stevejay's shortyness.
(J/k)
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 05:10 AM Hardcore nuts, raise your hand
*raises hand*
;) Won the league last night as rangers at the start of April, at least 15 points in front. I'll get to the end of the season and post a screenie.
The thing I'm most impressed with was the fact I rarely dabbled in the transfer market. There was never one huge signing (most expensive signing was some young guy for about 800k) alot of young players for the future. My main signing were the Russian international captain who I got for nothing.
There's alot of interesting little ideas in it which makes it more ... realistic
*players seem more tempremental (despite being top of the league, and playing in every game, Alan McGregor felt 'jaded and wanted a move', needless to say I told him he's going nowhere and the Russian Captain I have for no apparent reason began to 'dislike Carlos Cuellar' so my two main defenders just started hating one another. I've had several players suddenly start to worry about the club because they feel I don't rate them highly (even if they're an important player)
*At least once in a game there will be a goal disallowed, or someone ruled offside, only to have someone from your team or their team complain about it afterwards.
*the idea that fans now have a say in what you're donig is annoying, they rate everything you do from games to signings but they only seem to remember the last few signings you've done and also they don't seem to differentiate between a first team regular signing and some 16 year old Itallian you've bought for the future.
* people are ALWAYS complaining, if you don't play them for anything over 4 games they start to say they feel left out and may wish to move on, which is annoying. Ok that happens in real life but only once every now and again and certainly what feels like everyweek
When's the patch due out? anyone know?
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 05:11 AM It's probably mostly due to Stevejay's shortyness.
(J/k)
I'm 5'11" I'll have you know ;)
Maniacal Oct 23, 2007, 05:19 AM I'm 5'11" I'll have you know ;)
Pfft, you're only the same height as me.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 23, 2007, 05:57 AM I'm still technically taller, I think. By about an inch :p
Started up my game last night, with the intention of getting into it today.
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 06:06 AM since when has an inch mattered........... forget I said that ;)
I've found that, oddly enough, the MLS is a good place to search for players. they tend to be rather good and the league's not that great so they come cheap.
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 12:18 PM Heh, Strachan was just sacked by Celtic after I put them out of the Scottish Cup semi's.
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 23, 2007, 12:58 PM Heh, I'll be amused if Walter Smith (currently renamed Steviejay) should suddenly move from Rangers. Do I simply rename the new manager after you to continue the rivalry, or see what sort of future career the original has?
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 02:42 PM Heh rename the manager or not, doesn't really matter, you'll still loose to the mighty Rangers :p
word of warning though, it seem Naismith is made a bit too good in this game, and Boyd not enough, but that's just my opinion. Ferguson is on fire, Thomson is rated higher than Fergie (probably due to age) after that there ain't anything of note with the default Rangers team, although at the start it seems that Carrol is better than McGregor but if ALan gets a few games he quickly becomes number 1.
As for the Celtic team it's the usual suspects, Boruc is again a legend in the game,
Oddly enough though Celtic tend to bring in a striker (Eddie Johnson in my game) and stick with the strike force of the new striker and Jan Ven throughout which means Killin, McDonald and (of course) Rioden tend to get really unsettled really quickly. Oddly enough it seems that Kennedy seems to be Celtic's number 1 defender, and then O'Dea.
Aberdeen have been GREATLY weakened for some reason and they always seem to prop up the bottom or near enough, along with Gretna of course. Dundee Utd and Motherwell tend to do really well. Hearts have their moments but again, nothing special and Hibs suck mainly cause they only really have one good player left in Steven Fletcher (who is too expensive to buy)
steviejay Oct 23, 2007, 05:02 PM Well Kan, here you go
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/3323/steviejayendofseasonlj5.jpg
Unfortuantely I lost a game, second last game of the season after I'd alreadsy won the league and was letting my young players try their luck. Also drew 3 games, including a 4-4 all draw against ICT (who I eventually played in the Scottish Cup and chewed up.
Although you'll never guess who took up the reins at Celtic............ Mr O'Neil heh
Kan' Sharuminar Oct 24, 2007, 12:58 PM Ooh bugger, that may be a tough one to beat. I've only managed to get that sort of final score a couple of times before. I will fight for it though, and hopefully take some consolation in winning every other tournament I'm in. Cough.
steviejay Oct 24, 2007, 05:17 PM I must admit, that was alot easier than previous years. I'm not sure why..... the teams looked relatively balanced, I think perhaps this year Celtic only had one brilliant striker (i.e +20 goals) in Jan Van where as in the last one "Magic" Zurab was like lightening but then again, Rangers only really have one too (Naismith) where as Darcheville, COusin and Boyd all kind of just go about their job normally, doing ok but not exactly excelling. I think Brown is.... not as good as he really is irl, Thomson is ALOT better than him in the game but that could be due to perhaps where he was being played. I'd need to play a game as Celtic to have a look.
Red Door Oct 27, 2007, 12:29 AM I promised myself I wouldn't get Football Manager 2008, but I broke that. I like the little things they've done to improve it, and I even like the hotlinking. I must say, it's an improvement from last year!
azzaman333 Oct 27, 2007, 10:51 AM since when has an inch mattered........... forget I said that ;)

The A-League should be a good place to find players due to the salary cap. I'm just speaking hypothetically since I don't have the game though.
steviejay Nov 06, 2007, 05:19 AM OK, I'm now SUPER PISSED.
Started my second season as Rangers and qualified for the Champions league, was pretty chuffed and got ready for another season. Didn't think too much of it that I wasn't playing any games until it got to the point where I was about to play my first champions league game........ WITHOUT having started defending my title.
Checked the fixtures list and the only ones I've got up are Champions League games, it's as if the SPL simply didn't form again after I won it.
A bug? yes, a major, major one!!
Hitti-Litti Nov 06, 2007, 09:59 AM That's weird. I'd suggest that you download the released beta version of 8.0.1 patch, I think that it will fix it.
steviejay Nov 06, 2007, 10:22 AM I'm sure it would fix it but unfortuantely the problem is, I've already played a fifth of the season so I doubt it make a different.
restart :(
Maybe I'll go Celtic ;)
Dell19 Nov 11, 2007, 09:11 AM I had the same bug in one of the older games. I actually played the entire season to see if it generated league fixtures but unfortunately it didn't.
Kan' Sharuminar Nov 11, 2007, 03:55 PM Right then Stevie, given the horrific attitude of my computer recently, I figured a bit of Football Manager would give it a welcome break. I honestly don't think I'll be able to beat your 95 points, but I will do my best! And win the Champions League :mischief:
(To everyone else, where the devil are the hints at fantastic early-signings that were so prevailant in the previous FM thread?)
Hitti-Litti Nov 11, 2007, 04:05 PM Mika Ääritalo is way too good in this. Daniel Sjölund is a good signing for any Serie A team according to Lecce's scouts.
Enough?
Kan' Sharuminar Nov 11, 2007, 04:20 PM Enough?
We shall see, as I've signed Ääritalo. Consider yourself unofficial Celtic scout for now ;)
Red Door Mar 27, 2008, 05:08 PM Well, finally got around to seriously starting, and I chose to be Sevilla because I like them a lot. We've had 3 exhibition games, and we've won by a combined 11-1. Our hardest game was Ajax (3-1). I think we have a good shot of hanging with Real Madrid and Barca this season. I'm very satisfied with my whole team, I wish I had more depth at my defense. I get a real test as we open the SSC against Real Madrid. Then comes Champions League time.
EDIT: We won against Jerusalem (Champions League) 3-1 with leg 2 to be played in Jerusalem. We beat Real Madrid 2-1 at home, but lost 3-0 on the road to lose on agregate. Several of my defenders are injured, plus one of the two healthy ones has a one game suspension. It will be rough versus Jerusalem and our first few league matches.
Hitti-Litti Mar 28, 2008, 10:22 AM Year is 2011, I'm the manager of Cameroon. Started as the manager of Falkirk. I finished first two seasons on 4th place, and after second season in Falkirk the manager of Cameroon was sacked for bad performance in African Cup of Nations. So I applied for job and they hired me. At the half of third season in Falkirk it became obvious that I couldn't do better than a safe mid-table position, so I resigned.
So far as Cameroon's manager I have been 3rd in the African Cup of Nations and qualified to second round in World Cup(lost to Italy on extra-time, their winning goal was an offside too... this game is way too realistic, Italy always wins somehow :p).
Red Door Mar 28, 2008, 06:02 PM Well, we won our first league game 5-2 against Zarazoga. Pretty impressive win, especially since if the refs weren't blind/mentally challenged/blowing the game, it would have been 5-0.
We're in good shape, even with the depleted backline. I definetely need more defenders though, because I have 6, usually only one sub. I have a tough stretch coming up, and I need to win 3 out of 4 games.
Rossiya Apr 26, 2008, 12:32 PM Mika Ääritalo is way too good in this.
Yay! I have it!
You all, buy Mika Ääritalo. He is way too good in this compared to RL.
I found him randomly and he made it in the Chelsea first team, you will be pleased to know. Liked coming in from the flank with a shot or header.
Hitti-Litti Apr 29, 2008, 02:48 PM Some teenager that plays for TPS' junior team scouted TPS for SI, and screwed it up really bad. Luckily patches fixed Ääritalo's amazing potential.
Year is 2014(IIRC), I'm the manager of Zenith Petersburg. Got sacked from Cameroon after losing to Nigeria in ACN quarter finals, made a short visit in FC Dallas and Egypt, then joined Inverness CT. I finished 8th in the first season(media prediction was 11th, when I joined Inverness was a really crappy team, but I made it much better), and after 15 games I was 3rd in SPL. Then Zenith came and offered me a job with a transfer budget of 23 million euros. So I joined.

Man, how many leagues do you have playable?
Hitti-Litti May 01, 2008, 12:44 PM Highest league from Scotland, England, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, USA and South Africa. I think those are all. And I don't even have a superduperhypercyber new computer, FM doesn't need as much power from computer as one would think.
Rossiya May 01, 2008, 02:10 PM South Africa???? WHy??
Hitti-Litti May 01, 2008, 03:11 PM Why not? ;)
It would be neat to win the African Champions League some day... I almost went to Orlando Pirates after resigning from Falkirk, but decided not to.
Dodge_272 May 02, 2008, 11:41 PM Me and my bro recently had an epic netgame (we play netgames even though he's in the room across the landing - we open our doors and can see/talk to eachother though, we're not that sad..) in which he was Leeds and I was Fulham, lasted to about 2015 before we started dominating everything but it was without a doubt the best game I've had on any game in the series, even beats my Newcastle/Padova/Lecce/back to Newcastle/St.Albans/Xerez game which I played to 2030ish on 00/01... Proudest point of that game was winning world cup 2006 with china then 2010 with n.ireland... ahh good times.
No wonder I . .. .. .. .ed up so much in School and College with games such as these about, eh.
Ha, just found an old screenie of it, not 2008 I know, but what the hell.

Red Door Jun 05, 2008, 12:13 AM An update to that Sevilla game I started a long time ago. In January, I bought Dimitar Berbatov for an obscene amount of money because I have a man-crush on him. We still finished 6th in the league after going winless in our last 4 games. Kanoute finished the year slowly after starting off at a blistering pace. I spent the summer buying Pablo Aimar and Julio Baptista. In 2008-2009, we started with a hard schedule of Deportivo (road), Real Madrid (home), and Barcelona (road). However, the Kanoute/Berbatov combo up front seemed to finally work with each netting a goal in the 2-2 draw vs. Deportivo. Kanoute scored a quick goal against Real Madrid, but Raul ran wild against a weak Sevilla defense to defeat Sevilla 2-1. Baptista paid off with a goal vs. Barcelona, but the defense was unable to hold and fell 2-1. Pablo Aimar, after a back strain, made his Sevilla debut.
My defense has let up 6 goals in 2 games. CFC football experts, I need young defenders to solidify my defense. Please recommend me any 17-23 year old defenders, especially right backs that I should consider signing.
Red Door Jun 18, 2008, 11:22 PM Well, after a half-year of being told that Sevilla would not renew my contract, they offered me a bigger one. We're looking good for the future, especially with Berbatov and Kanoute up top. Duda is doing well, as are Baptista and Aimar. De Mul is becoming vital to this team along with Adriano. Mosquera commands the defensive line and gets help from Cannavaro and Del Horno and Palop is still in goal. Several Sevilla-trained youngsters are making their senior team debut and the 2009-2010 season could be an exciting one for Sevilla.
EDIT: Midway through the 2009-2010 season, the Cameroon job became available after a poor showing in the African Nations. My first challenge was World Cup 2010, where we qualified for the 2nd Round (lost to Brazil 2-1). In the 2012 and 2014 African Nations, we finished 2nd and 4th respectively. Expecting little in the World Cup, we got 2 points in the group stage, yet still made into the knockout round. First, we upset Germany 1-1(PK). Then, a 2-1 victory over Australia gave us a semi-final birth with Argentina, who we lost to in penalty kicks. We beat Portugal 2-1 in extra tie to finish 3rd. I felt it was my time to go, so I resigned. (At this point, Italy has won 3 straight world cups.) Seeing an opportunity, I applied for the open jobs at Brazil and France. Now, I am the head coach of the French national tea.
