View Full Version : Monty can't by me love.
BeyondCivilized Oct 28, 2007, 03:30 PM OK this is the fifth game where I've encountered Montezuma, as in he was randomly put in my game, and every time he successfully ruins my victory plan with his insane battle plans. This time around, I was going for a cultural victory, and the guy took all of my oldest cities (Barcelona, Cordoba etc) except Madrid (I was playing as Izzie/Random) before Monty finally agrees on the peace treaty plus a couple of techs, he was the fifth in the Score List when I was the first before his merciless invasion. I'm playing on Noble, and I've never encountered this problem with anyone else!
Bursk Oct 28, 2007, 03:59 PM That bloke's a nutter. Oi, nutter!
Try to take Monty out early, if you can, before he gets too powerful.
Frostyboy Oct 28, 2007, 04:10 PM Yes. Having Monty as neighbour is like sleeping next to a bomb. Rather attack him before he does.
CHEESE! Oct 28, 2007, 04:19 PM Yeah.. Monty is scary.. but i cant attack- i love Aztec history. And above- Monty is trying to attack himself? Lol its implied
SlightlyMad Oct 28, 2007, 04:30 PM Montezuma can actually be very useful if you get on his good side. The best situation is when you and he are on opposite sides of a powerful civ, and he shares your religion. Keep buttering him up with gifts and agreeing to his demands, and get him nice and friendly with you. This won't keep him from attacking you at all, but it will make him easily bribeable to attack your enemies. And as long as he's fighting your enemies, he's not fighting you.
Even better is if the war goes poorly for him, and you can stab him in the back. Raze or capture a few of his cities until he capitulates, and you'll find yourself with a surprisingly powerful ally. He'll never keep up with you in tech, but he'll always send dozens of units into your wars, which if nothing else will distract your enemy and divide his forces.
sydhe Oct 28, 2007, 04:45 PM This is not a problem, it's a feature!
BeyondCivilized Oct 28, 2007, 05:01 PM Yeah that happened to me when I was playing as the Inca, he wasn't a vassal, but he was a powerful ally with little to no negatives. But then at 1900AD he declared war and sent me back to the Stone Age.
SlightlyMad Oct 28, 2007, 05:08 PM Yeah that happened to me when I was playing as the Inca, he wasn't a vassal, but he was a powerful ally with little to no negatives. But then at 1900AD he declared war and sent me back to the Stone Age.
Was he at war with anybody else at the time? The trick is to constantly keep him at war with somebody else. Not only will that make him less likely to start a second war against you, but if you can keep a good attrition war going between them, he won't have the chance to amass those gigantic stacks of doom.
r_rolo1 Oct 28, 2007, 06:08 PM You have two option about Monty :
- Befriend him and feed him some bones ( pay him to war someone else )
- finish him ASAP
If you let Monty live without befriend him, you must expect that he'll knock at your door someday....
Personally, I prefer Monty to Shaka.... Shaka is more hard to manouver, he's more cinic and oportunistic, ReXes a lot and always have a good army. And loves the Mids and Police State.....
Dominico Oct 28, 2007, 06:24 PM I always found Alexander much more of a pain then both of these because his civ was always more powerfull. The other two, shaka and monte are quite backwards i usually find. Unless they attack you early on.
Quite cool how the game mirrors history, i think its their constant warmaking in civ which keeps them down.
Frostyboy Oct 28, 2007, 07:17 PM Ragnar can be pretty annoying as well, but at least his UU doesn't come too soon. Well, nothing beats Monty Zumas flying Circus and his Jaguars
It's funny how on of the most agressive leaders has the worst UU ever!
gpshaw Oct 28, 2007, 07:19 PM I hate Ragnar and Shaka the most because they're the ones more likely to declare war on you early when your defenses are weak
Geon Oct 28, 2007, 09:03 PM Ragnar is annoying but I've never seen him get anything but the short end of the stick, he seems to always end up some splintered vassal state.
Shaka, however, is the scary good one.

Guess what! They were "Closest Friends" in the game I mentioned in my first post! Talk about Luck! I rarely meet Shaka, and when I do, he's probably on another continent busy with someone else.
Diamondeye Oct 29, 2007, 02:21 PM This is not a problem, it's a feature!
They gotta attach this to a tech sometimes.
...Seriously, there is one solution to the Monty problem, and it's spelled with blood.
BeyondCivilized Oct 30, 2007, 09:56 AM But it's peaceful, right?
In my last game which I was playing this morning, I bribed Montezuma to a war with William (Dutch) and Mao (China). The war was declared on 1 AD, and lasted till 2050AD, on the epic speed. I won a cultural victory lulz.
Captain Carnage Oct 30, 2007, 10:23 AM Did you take this thread title from a Simpsons episode?
Kaliméro Oct 30, 2007, 10:39 AM Did you take this thread title from a Simpsons episode?
More likely frome a Beatle's song ("money can't by me love")
BeyondCivilized Oct 30, 2007, 10:39 AM Did you take this thread title from a Simpsons episode?
Finally! Someone notices. Greetings fellow Simpson fan, yeah I stole the title from some Simpson episode in Season 10 or somesuch. You know, the one with Nessy.
Although, I did a grave typo in the title.
BeyondCivilized Oct 30, 2007, 10:42 AM More likely frome a Beatle's song ("money can't by me love")
I bet they stole it from that, the writers from the Simpsons I mean.
Diamondeye Oct 30, 2007, 11:59 AM The title is "Money can't buy me love". And I know that even if Lennon died before I was born :P
Leodavinci Oct 30, 2007, 01:42 PM I always thought Monty and Toku are the most annoying leaders in the game, but last time my Ramesses somehow became so strong that first Monty then Toku willingly accepted me as their master to protect them from evil Saladin and Asoka.
Navarre Oct 30, 2007, 05:19 PM See Monty, kill Monty.
See Chaka, kill Chaka.
It's a rule of life. If you start near one of these and don't eradicate him, you'll face a massive war versus tons of retarded units sooner or later.
Alexander, Napoleon, Kubilai Khan... Well, better safe than sorry, but at least you can befriend these. The two psychos will attack you no matter what.
Frostyboy Oct 30, 2007, 06:21 PM Sure. And neither Jaguars or Impis are good warriors either
Navarre Nov 02, 2007, 12:33 PM What happens when you let Chaka and Monty loose ?

Typical... :D

he has to be aggressive to compensate for his crappy UU
WOOT 200th post :sarcasm:  :woohoo: :run: :D  [party] :band: :rotfl:   :trophy: :snowlaugh:
Winston Hughes Nov 02, 2007, 02:32 PM It's funny how on of the most agressive leaders has the worst UU ever!
It's a good thing that jags are so useless (at least in the hands of the AI).
With Unrestricted Leaders switched on, I've seen some pretty nasty AI combinations, but finding Monty of Rome living nearby is a truly terrifying possibility... :hide:
On a side note, be careful about getting Monty to do your warring for you. On more than one occasion I've had him slip the leash (ie. refuse to declare peace) and build a monster empire, before turning on me with a huge number of highly experienced troops. Because he builds so many units, he can conquer another civ with remarkable speed. So if he starts taking cities from his enemy, you should ready your defences against him.
Also, to the OP: beware of Cathy as well. She'll play best friends with you right up to the moment when her stacks of doom march across your borders. Never, ever trust her.
lauralaura Nov 02, 2007, 03:54 PM Monty is completely insane, but at least he provides you with the opportunity to make delicious, nutritious Montyburgers. They're healthy for you! At least, healthier than if you didn't make Montyburgers.
Yes, you can try to make him your dog of war, but I'm generally reluctant to do so with such a volatile nutball. What if he wins, and then comes after you with an enhanced empire? It's Montyburgers, all the way.

Now that is a nice game.... Monty vassal of Shaka, that has Sitting Bull and Hc in the bag as well... This is more what happens if you let Shaka loose
P.S Nice 3 "teams" World war.....
BeyondCivilized Nov 02, 2007, 04:02 PM Shaka's Impis are good for rushes, I played as him this morning and I took over Germany, France and England with only Impis and I were still in the BCs on Normal speed.
These forums taught me to not trust Cathrine, therefore she's always in war with someone whom I bribed with a few techs.
jpinard Nov 03, 2007, 02:35 PM Are any of you playing with Aggressive AI?
