View Full Version : Music be the food of love!

So, we all love Civ: BTS, yet for all the gazillions of strategy articles, stories, questions, polls, etc, I have yet to find one thread on my favorite part of the game- the music! Don't get me wrong, it's a great game without the music, but if the game gets a 9.5 from me the music gets a 9.6.

So, what's your favorite music pieces in the game? I, personally, am a big fan of Ragnar's Industrial music, Gilgamesh's Classical music, and Stalin's Modern music. I like all of it, but those have to be my top three, followed closely by the Ottoman Industrial.

I have actually met some people who disable the music ingame, choosing to listen to other songs that they've bought. If you're one of those people, go away.

We should go away because we do the smart thing during the ancient and renaissance eras? Yeah, okay.

Anyway, aside from that, the classic and industrial eras have excellent music (and the medieval and modern musics, while not as good, at least aren't bad enough to warrant the mute button.) For leaders, I like:

Early: Shaka
Middle: Victoria/Churchill, Willem
Late: Napoleon/DeGaulle, Ragnar, Willem, both Egyptians
All eras: Gilgamesh, Joao, both Celts

I find the modern music extremely annoying, gets on my nerves ... as for the civ diplomatic screens, I think my fave would be the celts.

I think they should put in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture into the mix. Not just the finale (which totally kicks ass), but the entire score. It's like 13 minutes long! It would totally rock the renaissance or industrial era. I agree with a lot of the previous opinions about the modern era music. I'd go with some 1920's swing or some <personnel-cultural-bias>New Orleans Jazz</personnel-cultural-bias>.

Obviously, deciding the score for the modern time is a though decision because by definition of the test of time, no modern music has underdone and passed this bar because there hasn't been enough time. If you want my personnel opinion (of you do!), I'd say play:

Dave Brubeck prior to 1960
The Doors' Riders of the Storm in the 1960's... alternately: the Benny Hill theme song, Yakety Sax if you are playing as England.
Jimmy Hendrix's Purple Haze in the 1970's, alternatively: Sex Pistol's anarchy in the U.K. if you're England
Metallica Fade to Black in the 1980's... alternately: Iron Maiden's Alexandar the Great if you happen to be playing Alex.
1990's: Phfffttt...obviously Tool: Stinkfist
alternatively: Megadeth's Anarchy in the U.S.A. if you're America, alternatively: some Ace of Base song if you're Ragnar,
alternatively: Iron Maiden's Mother Russia of you're Russia
2000-2010:Phfffttt...obviously Tool: Lateralus no matter who you are, it's just that good...
2010 and beyond, I dunno, maybe Sid could give John Williams a holla.

I second Joao, it sounds like some song that I heard a while back that has the words, where were you going without ever knowing the way. His music is the only one that realy ever stands out. I didn't realize they even had different era music, later in the game they are usually just trying to contact me about something annoying, so I speed through the diplo screens.

the modern age Charlemagne has a cool music I think, so does modern age Pacal.

For backgroundmusic it's difficult. There's a lot of cool stuff through all ages but there are anoying pieces, too. Especially when Theology has been researched.

In modern times I just can't stand this unbelievably stupd 'the people are the heroes now'-tune. Goes on my nerves max! I think I will delete it.

the music has always been a bit meh for me. i often play in my living room, and my housemates tell to turn the sound off so they can watch TV, so often i play with no sound at all. not really botheres TBH.

The Renaissance background music is pretty good to me. I kind of like Dvorak's Slavonic Dances and some Bach's compositions.

As for diplomatic music, Napoleon's music in one of the eras sounds good. I cant say for the rest because I dont pay much attention to them most of the time.

I love Lateralus...anyone who has not heard this song needs to. Awesome song for a peaceful buildup leading up to full out war! I envision this song going along with Modern Armor.

I agree the modern background music gets repetitive.

Talk about Music... THIS song in Modern Era "The People are the Heroes" should NEVER EVER be played under CERTAIN CIVICS, like...

SLAVERY (do I need to say more?)
BARBARISM (though it's very unlikely that any modern societies would remain Barbaric, that would make Hammurabi cry (since lawgiving is the very reason his name is recorded in History...)
THEOCRACY** (Religion restrictions of any kind, IMO, can be even WORSE than POLICE STATE, ask Jews under Izzy's reign (not that I'm Jews, but a relative of my uncle is). Also forced colonial religion conversion, the very reason we terminated foreign relation with European powers in some 300 years ago, which results later in the fall of our old capitol Ayutthaya (thus deny us the chance to be represented in Civ, as Angkor Wat is soooo that wonderful to Firaxis... just if Burmese didn't raze our capitol...))

, and possibly shouldn't be played also under
POLICE STATE (State paranoia wouldn't make much sense with people glorification...)
CASTE SYSTEM (Though better than SLAVERY, it would be still odd and dubious so say "The People are the Heroes"... See India, some of them are not even considered Human!)
VASSALAGE + SERFDOM (That would rather be like this, "The KNIGHTS (+barons+lords+upper) are the Heroes"...)

, and should be played more often under
UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE (Well if "The People are NOT the Heroes", then who the hell will cast vote(s) huh???)
NATIONHOOD (Quite obviously...)
STATE PROPERTY (To this point all the yankies + pro capitalist would say WTF?!, but IMO, in IDEAL STATE PROPERTY all people are equal, and thus, either all of them or none of them are heroes! (as a flameproof, I got -3.5/-0.5 in politicalcompass))

I really like the song, if play under reasonable civics...
Can someone post the lyrics of the song? My English listening skill sucks really hard! Thanks in advance.

Willem Van Oranje's late music is awesome. Its the kind of thing you'd hear at a circus. But the best music ever is BABA YETU. Its even on my ipod. :)

I am so bored of the music! Only the modern one I find tolerable. The best thing to do is of course to collect your favourite pieces and place them in the custom music folder. Only catch is that you don't get different music through the ages.

The irony is that the song was originally composed as a farce of Communist (specifically Maoist) propaganda. Still, it's one of my favorite pieces from the game...

If you're running Theocracy, while you are at war, Megadeth's Holy War should play. But, if you're running Police State and still have still manage to have more  than :) in any one of your cities, NWA's classic F*@k the Police should play. Anybody have ideas about Golden Age music?

Woodreaux, You're my new friend  Tool beats other music bands hands down, luckily I evolved new attachment to proper metal like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, All That Remains and Trivium, otherwise I'd be listening to Tool aaall the time  :goodjob:

If I could add something to 90's it would be RAGE. AGAINST. THE MACHINE. Any song really.

From in-game music (end of offtopic xPP) I like very much the piece of music around 0-1000AD, there are some low drums there, and they build up atmosphere of oncoming medieval onslaught greatly :king:

Leaders - Brennus. Not so much anymore, but I used to pay him a "visit" only to listen... And listen... Yup, nice celtic piece that is :)

I thought I have found this on Wikipedia, "La Marseilles (spell correctly?) is Napoleon's diplo music. In real history, he banned this song."
Is this true? If so, we're going to find the new one for him, fast!!
Is "La Marseilles" the music for DeGualle too?

I like the modern era music! John Adams's compositions are brilliantly technical.

My favourite diplo music is probably Charlemagne's hospital-drama music, although Ragnar's chant, Justinian's Kyriesque piece and Brennus/Boudica's lilting piece come close. Monty's music's good too, if only for nostalgia reasons. :D

I don't like Joao's music, though, or Isabella's. Classical guitar doesn't interest me for some reason.

IM the opposite to most of you. I love the older music like the really early african tribal stuff and the ancient stuff. I dislike the choir of medieval and i also really hate the depressing one that plays for hte modern era. I wish there were more classical tunes in there in the older ages.

Anyone point me to a section where i can put my own music into the game or is it not so easy as moving songs into a folder?

valamas
Nov 01, 2007, 11:26 PM
i like the classical music. but that is only one era.

So i tried the custom music folder option. The thing that bites is that every city you enter, the game decides to pause the music. Most irritating.

solution was to run your music in another mp3 player. hope your computer is as grunty as mine.
