View Full Version : Gary's Model Shop
Gary Childress Nov 07, 2007, 09:23 AM As Partizanac has wisely suggested I'm going to post all models I create to this thread instead of creating a new thread for each model. This way I can keep everything under one roof and keep people informed of any updates. Probably most of them will be towed artillery pieces of the 20th Century to start off with since they are a little easier for beginners like myself and also because there are still a LOT of artillery pieces of the First and Second World Wars which have not been done, while conversely the variety of ships, tanks and planes seems almost complete by comparison.
Also if anyone has requests for models please post them here. My skills are still limited but I'll do the best I can if the request looks "doable" for me. Right now I am doing most of the more complicated shapes in Google Sketchup and importing them into Bryce as OBJ files via Vue 6 Infinite. I owe Bjornlo bigtime for recommending this method to me. :)
MODEL UPDATES: First off there has been an update to the Type 96 15cm Japanese Howitzer. The new version has been uploaded and the old version taken down. Looking at pictures of the recoil mechanism on the Type 91 10cm howitzer I saw similarities to the Type 96 and the recoil I had for the 96 looked like it may have been configured a little incorrectly. This is now fixed. The color has also been changed to match the color of the Type 91, which I like better, although, since there are relatively few moving parts to the model it is easy enough to change it to whatever color you wish.
All future modeling projects will be dealt with here.
In the lineup for the near future is a "Schneider" m-907,75mm for Partizanac.
Also a quick run down of what is uploaded so far:

TopGun Nov 07, 2007, 06:34 PM I know I'll be a frequent visitor here. :D
Ares de Borg Nov 07, 2007, 06:58 PM Okay. Who's gonna make them bang now?
TopGun Nov 07, 2007, 07:18 PM Okay. Who's gonna make them bang now?
I timidly raised my hand, Ares.
TopGun Nov 08, 2007, 03:27 PM Just some inspiration for Japanese artillery tractors (http://www3.plala.or.jp/takihome/Ni-Ku.htm)...
The one shown on this page pulled the Type 96 howitzer. Would be great for a Run flc...
aaglo Nov 08, 2007, 03:33 PM That japanese type 91 (10.5 cm)... thats what... 4 inch gun? That looks good

I'll give the artillery tractor a try. How do people normally do tracks so that they will rotate? Please tell me there is a way to do them other than one track at a time? :D
@aaglo: Thanks! According to my calculations 105mm comes out to just a shade over 4 inches. 1 inch = 25.4mm.
Wyrmshadow Nov 08, 2007, 06:13 PM In the lineup for the near future is a "Schneider" m-907,75mm for Partizanac.

Quinzy Nov 08, 2007, 06:17 PM Tracks are done by rotating the texture of the track (the texture having all the lumps and bumps painted on to the flat surface model, rather than moving the actual track. Wym is the man to talk to about that, i've only had a quick run through about it, and that was quite a while ago :)

Yes, but it all depends on your texture.. Could take some work.. You may need to rotate the texture if its in a circle... or move the texture.. I don't know since I dont have it.

I didn't realize they were the same thing. I already have yours downloaded too.
That takes one off the agenda. Now I just need to do the artillery tractor and a Land Rover for Roman Legion.
Roman Legion Nov 08, 2007, 07:35 PM Hey gary, if you need a list of units to be made, I have an almost endless list :)
Gary Childress Nov 08, 2007, 08:59 PM Let me finish a couple things I'm doing right now and then I'll be open for other suggestions. :)
Things I'm working on right now:
In Progress: Japanese Artillery Tractor
Next in line up: Land Rover
On Hold: 128mm German Flak Cannon (towed single mount)
Roman Legion Nov 08, 2007, 10:09 PM Alright, but hope your in for a Really long list... :)
Gary Childress Nov 09, 2007, 04:08 PM Here's the Japanese artillery tractor as requested by TopGun 69. :)

This is the only picture I had to work off of so there are sure to be some discrepencies somewhere. I did embellish a little in various places to make the model a little more interesting, most notably on the back of the rear seat there are a few shapes added.

TopGun Nov 09, 2007, 10:15 PM sweet... nice detail!
Gary Childress Nov 10, 2007, 07:37 AM I hope no one is working on animating the German FH 18. Working on the Land Rover was driving me insane so I decided to do a unit for a change of pace. :crazyeye:
This is just a preview. Fortify and attack have been done. I still have to do the rest of the animations.

Wyrmshadow Nov 10, 2007, 07:39 AM It doesn't look like the barrel is recoiling.. More recoil on barrel, less on the whole piece.
Gary Childress Nov 10, 2007, 08:30 AM It doesn't look like the barrel is recoiling.. More recoil on barrel, less on the whole piece.
The barrel has a pretty good recoil I think. The blast hides it a little at this angle. I'll tone down the gun jumping a little and add a little extra recoil.
Wyrmshadow Nov 10, 2007, 08:35 AM Then add a little forward motion to the blast as well.. the gasses are explosively moved forward afterall.
Plotinus Nov 10, 2007, 08:47 AM That's true - it looks a little odd to have the explosion fade away while remaining rock-solid in place like that. Looks excellent otherwise though.
Partizanac Nov 10, 2007, 10:18 AM *cough* *cough*
;)
Gary Childress Nov 10, 2007, 12:31 PM Hi Partizanac, I was going to do your gun, however, Wyrmshadow has already done a version of it. I didn't think we needed two versions of the same gun. If you have another request I'll do that one in its place. :)
Partizanac Nov 10, 2007, 12:38 PM he did? where is it?
BadKharma Nov 10, 2007, 01:12 PM It is either in his huge list of WWII or WWI unit packs.
Gary Childress Nov 10, 2007, 04:54 PM You can download it here Partizanac: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3700
Partizanac Nov 10, 2007, 05:21 PM Dude! I told you I don't need a cannon but a AA field gun, and wyrm's gun is "French" with a blue shield, mine doesn't have a shield cause its not a cannon but a AA field gun... and my gun is "Schneider"
Gary Childress Nov 10, 2007, 05:46 PM OK. I'll make the gun then. I was under the impression they were basically the same gun or something.
Gary Childress Nov 12, 2007, 04:48 PM @Partizanac: OK. I'm going to make the Schneider. There isn't much information to go off of, only the one grainy photo, so I hope you don't mind the potential for some historical innaccuracies. It'll probably be mostly improvisation.
Sorry Roman Legion, I've placed the Land Rover Wolf on hold for now. That thing is driving me insane. The roll bars have been very difficult to work with. Also the curvatures of the hood and front end are very difficult for me to duplicate so I basically abandoned trying to duplicate them exactly. But I'll give it another shot maybe in a few days.
Partizanac Nov 12, 2007, 05:28 PM ok... I only ask of you to try your best! :)
Gary Childress Nov 12, 2007, 10:15 PM OK, a new prototype is ready for field testing, the "Schneider" m-907,75mm AA/Field Gun.

Partizanac Nov 13, 2007, 04:57 AM thanks man! I really appreciate ;)
:goodjob: it looks awesom! :D
Now I only have to find someone to animate :)
Gary Childress Nov 13, 2007, 07:36 AM You're welcome Mr. Ambassador! :)
Roman Legion Nov 13, 2007, 03:17 PM Indeed it is nice, great job.
Gary Childress Nov 13, 2007, 04:06 PM Thanks Roman Legion. I will get the Land Rover done. It just might take a little while. It's very difficult to get what I want because of the curves and tapers. I started a couple models and may end up having to settle for a little less than I had hoped. At the very least it should look OK at the various Civ scales. :(
Roman Legion Nov 13, 2007, 04:47 PM I'm sure it will be great, could you model it after the ones on the movie 28 days later?
<EDIT> Here are the best pictures I could find, and they were taken from youtube, I will try to get you a more clearer picture from the DVD later.

Roman Legion Nov 13, 2007, 05:18 PM its nice, but I would like one modeled from 28 days later, please?
Gary Childress Nov 13, 2007, 07:01 PM OK. Sure. Please get some better pictures though if you can. The best picture for me is one from the same sort of angle as the model I was using. It gives some idea of what the vehicle looks like from front, side and top. Conversely if you can come up with 4 clear pictures from the DVD which show front, side, top and back, that would be ideal.
Gary Childress Nov 29, 2007, 03:09 PM The latest greatest.
The German K-18 170mm gun.

Roughly based upon this:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/115930/17cm-01_790x527.png
And, since they were based upon the same chassis, the 210mm Morser will be following soon.
TopGun Nov 29, 2007, 11:15 PM That's a heck of a modeling job, there! :wow:
Gary Childress Nov 29, 2007, 11:52 PM That's a heck of a modeling job, there! :wow:
Thanks TopGun. I wish I had physical models of these guns I'm doing though. It's a little difficult to go off of pictures that don't show what the left side or front look like. So I do a lot of improvisation. :)
Gary Childress Nov 30, 2007, 12:20 AM Same chassis, except with a 210mm gun mount.

aaglo Nov 30, 2007, 12:24 AM That's a nice model
What program do you use for this? My guess is Blender...
Bjornlo Nov 30, 2007, 03:23 AM That's a nice model
What program do you use for this? My guess is Blender...
Which would make sense given the detail and all... but he did it with google sketchup and imported it in to bryce (likely useing blender only as a file converter).
---
Gary, that is a very nicely detailed model. Looks really nice.
Gary Childress Nov 30, 2007, 07:52 AM Thanks guys. I really do appreciate it. :) I actually use Vue 6 to import from Google Sketchup into Bryce. (something Bjornlo actually told me about) Most of the stuff I try to do in Sketchup and then any moving parts I do in Bryce.
Roman Legion Nov 30, 2007, 03:46 PM Ok, I will try and find a programme which will screen grab from my DVD this weekend, If someone could suggest an easy way to screen grab a picture from a DVD, it would be much easier.
Quinzy Nov 30, 2007, 03:47 PM Press "Prnt Scrn" on your keyboard?
Roman Legion Nov 30, 2007, 09:41 PM I have a notebook, the Print screen button is also the F11, I have not the faintest Idea how to do this...
Quinzy Dec 01, 2007, 10:35 PM Shift and F11?
