View Full Version : Anybody else is addicted ?

Just wondering...

Anybody thinks he is addicted to Civ IV, other than me ? Some signs of addiction :mischief:

1. After a long day of work (personnally I am a programmer), you feel like your Civ game at night is your reward.

2. When you launch a game and hear the music with the long presentation, you just feel instantly better and in the mood of exploring and conquer the world

3. If you can't play Civ 4 for a couple of days, you are just starting to feel bad.

4. You haven't played any other PC games for a while, despite having an interesting collection of titles and a performant PC.

5. You think Isabella could be very nasty in bed.

Maybe I just have a problem. Any group support ? :D

Well, the Isabella in bed thing really isn't for me, but other than that, I'm with you.

I've' also developed "Civ elbow"--a condition that develops after you sprawl in front of a monitor for about 12 hours straight clutching a mouse but otherwise not moving...

Are any of you, in your dreams, in the dead of night, commanding workers around, improving tiles??? Then waking up because your "mousefinger" keeps turning the bedstand lamp on and off, on and off ... ..... ?

Now, that's addiction for you!

Yes, but you know you're really addicted when you wake up from those dreams to run to your computer to implement the wonderful strategies that came to you in your dreams!

I would add

6. Your wife/significant other asks you "are you playing that stupid game" and "stop playing that stupid game and come to bed" and is generally angry that you spend so much free time playing it.

@LlamaCat

That is HILARIOUS, although my laughter was sort of nervous laughter...

Oh, I try, but no matter how many times I press the regenerate button, I never seem to be able to find the map from my dreams.

And in all the real maps, Monty's there, and very much alive.

I have an addiction, and recognize the symptoms. To deal with it I have enforced civ-breaks. One week no civ, and it is very hard !

I managed 2 weeks without civ during my holydays, and was very proud.

It sounds better than being a SMAC addict though.

I had a dream about my Quechua dominating the world, then played it out and came 3rd in the recent highest score gauntlet!!! Result!

Yeah. All the time. Too bad when you turn off your alarm clock though, waking up 15 mins before you have to leave for school because your father is yelling at you :)

Oh, and this is the closest you come to a "Anonymeous Civholics" forum...

Eh,, more fun examples of C-IV addiction - you play pirates with a friend, he finds himself an East Indiaman to plunder and you say:

"East Indiaman - replaces Galleon for the dutch empire, 4 cargo space, 6 strength, instead of 3 cargo 4 strength, same hammer cost, available with Astronomy, upgrades to transport."

And whenever someone says the name of a tech, even in another context, you mention all the abilities of the tech, the citing and whom is cited.

Maybe you guys should start "Civ Annonymous"...

The other night, I spent an hour regenerating maps because I couldn't find the perfect one. It's a little like finding a woman... when you finally get a good one, you can't help wondering after awhile if you could do better. Or, maybe I'm just overly picky about my maps.

Or, when I through my geneaology-studies finally find traces of my great grandfathers brother in New York, and it turns out he was the owner of a pig iron factory, I do not say: "Yeah, finally I found him!", but I yell out: "Pig iron, I've got pig iron! I REALLY got pig iron!"

6 months of not playing civ4 and counting. Too much on my plate with grad school and a new job, so I uninstalled the game and deleted the backup copy. On the other hand, I now visit the Civfanatics forum daily, hmm, maybe it is a new addiction.

LOL! I totally do this, and then seconds after u hit regen, you think about what could have been..... what you might have missed out on....

Anyone else have dreams about crazy starting locations where u have like 10 resources in the BFC?

What about waking up on your day off and thinking... "I'll just play a few turns and then go out and do something". Next thing you know it's dark outside and your spaceship has just been launched.

Where are your diplomatic skills, guys? Can't you see that you have to give your lady a tech or two? That way she can share your best friend, and you'll end up with: +4 "Our mutual struggle .... .... " ;)

(But beware, she might like your friend so much that you'll never be able to drag her away from the computer - and she might end up posting in this thread. :D)

I did this too some months ago and also changed to a trackball mouse at home... now everyone at work using my PC is getting nutz :crazyeye: because I changed the buttons for my left hand use... its always very funny!!! Even when I tell them "buttons swapped" they cannot manage to use it properly

I now can properly work with Photoshop left handed. Its amazing how fast you get used to using your other hand for doing things when you do it on a daily basis. Though my "strong" hand remains my right one...

Why do I keep getting:

Heh, I like to leave post-it notes reminding me what to build where, so that I never get confused after school. And I do my homework inbetween turns in the Future Era. Stupid computer!

I can't see how people can play it everyday. It eats up a lot of time, but that makes me not want to play when I only have a few hours.

Also, sometimes I reach a major decision point, and I want to stop to think about it.

Oh damn I leaped on this when I saw the subject line. I know I have an addictive personality, but I've never had to be too careful about it because I tend to get bored with things long before they become a problem. Not Civ IV though... I keep trying to "play it out of my system," but it's not working.

I'm definitely addicted in any reasonable definition of the word... I'm in law school with exams fast approaching, and I've been to so few classes that I can't even figure out what my professors look like.

10 Reasons that this middle aged Guy thinks he's addicted

1) When the wife asks me to fix the dryer I absently mindedly say, give me a few centuries instead of a few minutes.
2) You buy a second home computer so the damned kids can do their homework on it and not intefere with me playing civilization.
3) Your are more interested in helping the kid's out with their history homework than science homework (I am a scientist).
4) You get up 2 hours earlier than th rest of the family on weekends so you can have some "peaceful" time to play CIV.
5) You call you wife Cathy or Issy rather than the correct name, and not realize it.
6) You tell your kids "Land is Power" when you pass the for sale sign on the neighbors lawn while walking to school.
7) You leave work early so you can buy a copy of BTS the day it is released.
8) The $3000 pool table in the basement has a nice layer of dust on it (guess I better dust it off for the holidays).
9) Your dog is getting fat because you haven't walked him everyday like the vet said. The neighbor also let's you know that the smell from the yard is getting bad and I need to get off my behind and cleanup after the mutt.
10) When I go to the bank I have to remember I get paper, not gold and I get 5% return on my money, not 50%.

11) You swear your mother in the nursing home that you see once a week looks more and more like Queen Victoria.

Don't know what you guys are talking about. I can totally stop anytime I want to. I just don't CHOOSE to stop. Serious, man. ANYtime I can stop cold turkey. Just don't wanna.

Only problem I have is the "Civ Time Warp". Somehow, I sit down to play and it creates some hole in the space/time continuum because I'll look up 5 minutes later and 3-1/2 hours have gone by. Eerie.

7) You leave work early so you can buy a copy of BTS the day it is released.

true story:
my entire family (siblings, aunts, uncles, etc) on my dad's side gets together once a year. this year it was the week that BtS came out. before we left for the trip, hubby realized it would be released while we were out of town, and actually asked me if i was gonna take time to run to a computer store and buy it. ok let's think about this:

- i'm on vacation with my family, and i want to actually spend time with them
- i'm not anywhere near my computer, so i can't play it even if i do get it and wasn't lucky enough to have a fun family
- i don't know where any computer stores are
- i would have to borrow my mom's or dad's car. they don't mind that at all. but they have very pricey cars, so i am way too nervous to drive 'em on the insanely windy roads where we stay, and hubby knows that.

but with all that, he thought i was so addicted i'd want it on release day anyway! he's crazy and he thinks i'm crazy too, apparently.

of course i didn't buy it until we got back home. i did use dad's laptop to surf the forums when everybody else was asleep during vacation tho. so yeah i'm pretty addicted *giggle*
