I've got a ciopy in the post to me, has anyone here played it and can you give me some verdicts? Absolutely awesome. I am now playing the Modern Day Scenario 2 v1.5, where you can unite Europe (peacefully) as the EU - terrific! RedRalph Nov 09, 2007, 06:37 AM Excellent. I dont think anything wille ver replace Civ for me - but I wanted to try somehting that was more militarily focused while being reasonably similar. how does the diplomacy compare to Civ? ComradeDavo Nov 09, 2007, 06:43 AM Get the Doomsday expansion pack. I've just started playing it again recently. Amazing game:goodjob: Take a look in the 'other games' forum, theres a few threads on the game in there! Chukchi Husky Nov 09, 2007, 06:56 AM I have Doomsday, but I don't play it much. Godwynn Nov 09, 2007, 07:26 AM I have Armageddon and I play it constantly. Later into the game it becomes unplayable due to slowness with the massive amounts of calculation the computer has to do. 1936-1946 are my playable years. I am waiting for v1.2 to hopefully fix this, then I won't have a social life anymore. McManus Nov 09, 2007, 07:29 AM Doomsday rocks! Steph Nov 09, 2007, 07:34 AM Although I'm a big fan of Europa Universalis, I didn't like the Heart of Iron series that much. I often have the feeling you spend time doing nothing but wait for the time to pass. Verbose Nov 09, 2007, 08:09 AM Happy to see more people getting into Paradox' stuff!:goodjob: Though for me the addiction is rather "Victoria. It's like the heroin of über-complex (commercial) strategy games.:bong-smily: Murky Nov 09, 2007, 08:29 AM Just got Doomsday, plan it to play it sometime the weekend. McManus Nov 09, 2007, 08:47 AM Steph: and there is no waiting in Europa Universalis then? At least when WW2 breaks out theres lots to do in HoI2... but both games are of a very slow tempo.. Grisu Nov 09, 2007, 08:58 AM Although I'm a big fan of Europa Universalis, I didn't like the Heart of Iron series that much. absolutely, though I don't know why exactly... Happy to see more people getting into Paradox' stuff!:goodjob: Though for me the addiction is rather "Victoria. It's like the heroin of über-complex (commercial) strategy games.:bong-smily: ah yes, another one of my favourites, especially with the Revolutions expansion :) Pannonius Nov 09, 2007, 09:00 AM But you can allways adjust the game speed. I got the game little more than 2 months ago, and, sadly, didn't played CIV since. Steph Nov 09, 2007, 09:26 AM Steph: and there is no waiting in Europa Universalis then? At least when WW2 breaks out theres lots to do in HoI2... but both games are of a very slow tempo.. There is waiting EU, but I don't mind it, while I find the HoI waiting boring. Also, I like the exploring, colonization, multipolar diplomacy... HoI2 is to "historical" RedRalph Nov 09, 2007, 09:27 AM whats the diplo in HOI2 like? Can someone compare it to Civ4 diplo for me? Steph Nov 09, 2007, 09:29 AM The main problem I see is there are only 3 factions. Axis, Allied, and Communist... So it's a bit limited. Stolen Rutters Nov 09, 2007, 09:32 AM I love HOI2, EU3, and Victoria: the triple threat of Paradox. I was heavy into all 3 games until CivIV Warlords came out. BtS further delayed my return, but I'm feeling EU3 call again. (EU3 was my favorite, but each game has its own special draw.) edit - Speaking of Paradox, EU players they may recognize my forum name from a naval event in Europa Universalis II (the Stolen Rutters event). I have been using the name in many a forum since. Oda Nobunaga Nov 09, 2007, 11:05 AM XD, yes, I do recognize the event now that you mention it. Shame on you, sinking people to steal their maps. (Man. EU II is not installed on my computer for the first time in years...but then again, there is only one game currently installed, and it is, in fact, EU III). Can't wait for EU:Rome. And I keep thinking I should get CK+DV off Gamersgate. It's the one major Paradox title (There is no such thing as Diplomacy) I'm still missing :-D Chukchi Husky Nov 09, 2007, 11:08 AM I have Europa Universalis 2 and Crusader Kings. Winner Nov 09, 2007, 11:17 AM There is waiting EU, but I don't mind it, while I find the HoI waiting boring. Also, I like the exploring, colonization, multipolar diplomacy... HoI2 is to "historical" Try Modern Day Scenario v1.5 I've swallowed almost entire continental Europe. You can choose EU as a player, but you start with nothing - you have to persuade the member countries to give up on their national sovereignty. Currently, my industrial capacity is two times bigger than the American. Soon, I am gonna start a trans-atlantic "enlargement" :mischief: Stolen Rutters Nov 09, 2007, 02:13 PM XD, yes, I do recognize the event now that you mention it. Shame on you, sinking people to steal their maps. Ha. In the first EUII game I played, I tried to play as the Iroquois. In the game, exotic cultures needed to interact with Europe before they could do lots of things, including build cavalry, ships, and exploring new lands, so I was able to build my ships only after England and France showed up in North America. They attacked me as soon as they found me, and before long I had enough contact with them to start building ships. Stolen rutters revealed the map all the way to Europe, and it allowed me to capture provinces in Portugal... as the Iroquois! (That's not very easy to do.) I was hooked. Oh, back to original post. Hearts of Iron II is fairly complex, but really fun once you learn it... if you have the time. Mountain-God Nov 09, 2007, 04:04 PM Brilliant! One of the best around. Armageddon is much improved - especially with the combined unit/attachment construction. Unfortunately :p I left my cd in a library book - so I can no longer play  VRWCAgent Nov 09, 2007, 05:06 PM After hearing them babble on in #fiftychat about it, I bought the Victoria games, HOI, HOI2, Doomsday and Armageddon online right on the spot. I have installed them and there they sit. Every time I go to fire up a game, my mouse convulsively gravitates towards the Civ shortcuts. Bronx Warlord Nov 09, 2007, 05:09 PM I've spent many hours on HoI/DD Vicky and EU3 : ) Many hours. Darth_Pugwash Nov 09, 2007, 05:20 PM It's a great game. The diplomacy is relatively simplistic compared to Civ IV just due to the nature of the period it is modelling - the war is basically inevitable most games and the three major power blocs are all either half-formed or fully-formed depending on what year you start the game in, so it's not nearly as changeable as diplomacy in Civ, but it can still be interesting. There have been quite afew AARs in the All Other Games forum if you fancy having a quick look and checking those out, you will probably learn quite a bit on how to play the game just by reading them. :) Oda Nobunaga Nov 09, 2007, 06:13 PM Brilliant! Kan' Sharuminar Nov 09, 2007, 07:51 PM I've played it a couple of times. Quite liked it. SuperBeaverInc. Nov 09, 2007, 07:56 PM ...Aren't Paradox games amon the very few out there you can still play without your CD? I know that with HoI Anthology you can play without the CD. I inadvertently discovered that when I launched the game with my C3C disc in the drive. ainwood Nov 10, 2007, 01:55 AM Moved to all other games Darth_Pugwash Nov 10, 2007, 05:12 AM I've played it a couple of times. Quite liked it. Don't listen to this guy, he's a complete HoI n00b. :p joking of course! sirtommygunn Nov 10, 2007, 09:16 AM The main problem I see is there are only 3 factions. Axis, Allied, and Communist... So it's a bit limited. you can make your own alliance such as the chinese alliance vs japan, although somtimes its hard to make. Captain2 Nov 10, 2007, 10:12 PM Absolutely awesome. I am now playing the Modern Day Scenario 2 v1.5, where you can unite Europe (peacefully) as the EU - terrific! I recently got the modern day scenario but I can't find much to do something about Putin not being the leader in Russia just bothers me enough to ruin it oh, that and North Korea has no tech teams Luckymoose Nov 11, 2007, 04:02 PM Brazil intervening in the Spanish Civil war is cool. I loved that part of my current game. Godwynn Nov 11, 2007, 06:21 PM Does anyone else like turning a small nation into a large power (Bulgaria, Romania, Republican Spain), or do you all enjoy taking the helms of already large and well established nations (Germany, USA, USSR) Captain2 Nov 11, 2007, 06:43 PM well I've turned Canada into a major power so I guess I apply I even had Communist China win the civil war once The Yankee Nov 11, 2007, 07:04 PM Does anyone else like turning a small nation into a large power (Bulgaria, Romania, Republican Spain), or do you all enjoy taking the helms of already large and well established nations (Germany, USA, USSR) I played as Saudi Arabia once. Got my rear handed over to me. Granted, it wasn't as if I fully understood everything in the game when I did that. sirtommygunn Nov 11, 2007, 08:42 PM i tried bulgaria, figured id try to take over greece at the start i got my @$$ handed to me on a silver platter. Berrie Nov 12, 2007, 04:59 AM Does anyone else like turning a small nation into a large power (Bulgaria, Romania, Republican Spain), or do you all enjoy taking the helms of already large and well established nations (Germany, USA, USSR) Trying as Hungary right now... No guarantees for succes yet. Gelion Feb 06, 2009, 06:11 AM Failed to find that original one, I am resurrecting this thread. I am facing a strategic debate as Soviet Union. Mid-1944 I've defeated Nazi German and her allies. The outcome is far better than historical: All of continetal Europe besides Scandinavia and Iberian Peninusula is under Soviet hands (and those of its allies). Americans have created two 4-province enclaves and have given them to France. Thus there's still a constant threat of allied landing. In the meantime Japan has literally conquered Asia. Having defeated China in 1941 they have proceeded to submit India, Indochina and Persia to their will. As of June 1944 there is some limited fighting in Indonesia with allied forces. Portugal has stupidly joined the war as Axis 2 months prior to end of Fashist Italy. I guess it was done for the prestige of being the chief Axis power if only for a little while. In short, Allied-Axis war will be over in a matter of months. In order to bring Communism to people of the world, I as USSR, need to defeat both Allies and Japanese within the next 8 years. Here lies the dilemma: Allied forces amount to 320 infantry, 30 aroured divisions, 56 fighter and 20 bomber squadrons, 22 Battleships, 25 Carriers and over 200 smaller ships. Japanese forces are under 400 infantry divisions, and airforce of 3(!) squadrons. They have also 10 Battleships, 11 Carriers and 90 smaller ships. Militarily the advantage of Allies is clear. My technologies are on par with modern requirements. A War with Japan would require only a transfer of forces from Europe to Asia. This, with the figting involved, would require about 2 years to push the Japs out of Asia. If we do that however, the position of Allies would strengthen as opposed to ours. War with Allies would require a creation of a large fleet (by 1945 when technologies have been researched) as well as Marine and Paratrooper force. I cannot estimate how long the war would take, probably till the end of scenario. We have Brasil as allies. Soviet Fleet atm is level I. I have around 250 infantry and 60 tank divisions. Soviet airforce is also relatively small - 30 squadrons and 30 allied (Brasilian ones). Here is the question. Do I prepare for war with the Allies or the Japanese? What strategy should I employ in either war? Serutan Feb 06, 2009, 01:38 PM If you concentrate on the Middle East and Africa, you can start a ground war with the Allies and not need the fleet immediately. Create puppets as dissent allows.
