View Full Version : Religious Buildings Art thread
woodelf Nov 12, 2007, 06:37 AM winddelay and I are currently trying to finish up the 32 buildings needed for the various religions in Dragonia. I'll try to breakdown what's done and what's needed, both for us (win and I) and everyone else. A good portion are done, but need shadows before the final release.
Nerull
Shrine - Most likely use an existing model, maybe my crypt from 06.
Temple - done, needs shadow
Crypt of Souls - winddelay is making a new one. Use for old one?
The Necropolis - win is making a new one.
Gruumsh
Shrine - need simple model or an existing one might be good enough
Temple - done, needs shadow
House of the One Eye - done, needs shadow
Iron Fotress - done, needs shadow
Lolth
Shrine - done, needs shadow
Temple - done, needs shadow
Guilladirth - done, needs shadow and to be uploaded.

The Great Tree - done, needs shadow
Hextor
Shrine - done, needs shadow
Temple - done, needs shadow
Citadel of Strife - done, needs shadow
Iron Sanctum - done, needs shadow
Moradin

Hall of Moradin's Forge - started, not finished
Seat of Moradin - winddelay finished?
Pelor

Citadel of Light - done, needs shadow
Heironeous

Some of the "need info" might just mean I need a reminder. ;)
Feel free to post ideas, additions, suggestions, ect.
Darque Nov 12, 2007, 10:20 AM Woodelf, you already started the model for the Temple of Heironeous. Layout is found at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5957976&postcount=83 and you sent me an image of an early model here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5980701&postcount=129
Darque Nov 12, 2007, 02:34 PM The Heironean Shrine should look like a statue of an armed soldier.
Darque Nov 12, 2007, 04:04 PM The Sanctum of Heironeous is a large oval shaped structure completely carved from grey granite. The building is 3 stories high and sits alone among a low, man-made plateau, offering a glorious view of the city and its countryside from one of the many open arched windows that line its outer walls on all three floors.
A path approaches the structure from the west and begins a full circle of the perimeter, slightly wrapping inwards before actually reaching the lone entrance. The path is wide enough for a marching army to travel up or down, fittingly described as it is a slight incline as it wraps towards the entrance.
The doors of the temple are reinforced with iron to strengthen them against ramming and other siege weaponry. Large iron rings hang from each door, alerting those on the other side of some ones approach.
The roof has a small wall to keep the unfortunate few posted there from tumbling off during the night. Small ballistae line the perimeter focusing more on the gate and were they can reach over the wall. The entire roof is really just a path circling the are where the oval halls would be, leaving an open area for the courtyard to be subjected to the current weather.
The courtyard is an open roofed area, with grass and dirt patches covering the area, more grass than dirt. Where grass is present, it changes from a lush yet trampled green to a more dry yellow, also trampled. Dirt patches are mostly small, but two on either long end are present from the church practices jousting. This area is almost always filled with the clamoring of priests and followers practicing warfare, and sometimes offers tournaments which are publicly viewed. Stands are lined about the second floor, a large section for the general population and a small section reserved for the clerics.
woodelf Nov 13, 2007, 10:42 AM That's a nice description, but it sounds like a city in itself! A lot of the elements can easily be done by themselves, but putting them all into a model that fits onto the map within a city will look funny. A 3 story oval building on a small mound is doable, but I'm concerned about what happens with the LSystem as other stuff is added to the city. I think the courtyard and tourney area would mess with the overall scale. I'll see what I can dream up.
Darque Nov 13, 2007, 12:58 PM For the LSystem selection, I would select a larger area, and in most cases, the Sanctum will then be located just outside of the city. The courtyard doesn't need to be made too detailed, maybe just a green lawn and stands on two sides. The stands could just be diagonal shape on the 2nd story, textured to look like benches.
Darque Nov 15, 2007, 01:45 PM Found this description in Races of Stone:
A Temple of Moradin is an impressive building. The roof is little more than decorative panels hung from the beams that stretch overhead, and the walls are covered with bas-reliefe sculptures portraying the legends of Moradin and his wife, Mya. At the back of the temple is a giant, elaborate forge that never goes dark. This forge is the altar of Moradin, where all rituals and religious celebrations are held.
Lets make the Forge portion of the building round. Make the main portion of the building rectangular with a flat roof. For the textures, make it look like grey stone with bas-relief sculptures. Have the front door be open.
woodelf Nov 20, 2007, 10:28 AM Finally got around to putting these into the game to capture a screenie.
First the ruins of Guilldirth (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7660). Thanks winddelay for the texture and shadow!
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/ABC.JPG
And now the Temple of Brilliant Reflection (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7661).
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/TOBR0000.JPG
Here's a pic of the Cold Ones Corral made for the Warhammer mod if there's an interest.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/COCorral0000.JPG
Darque Nov 20, 2007, 11:55 AM The Corral might make an interesting version of a stable for orcs and goblins. Are you able to put some wolves inside?
woodelf Nov 20, 2007, 05:09 PM As an improvement or building?
Darque Nov 20, 2007, 11:16 PM Hmm...I was thinking originally to use wolves as a resource...in that case, it would be used as a improvement.
woodelf Nov 24, 2007, 06:42 PM Not sure if this has a use, but here is the Sigmar Temple (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7685) made for WHFB.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/Sig0000.JPG
Darque Nov 24, 2007, 07:11 PM Looks awesome. Let me review our wonders and find a fit. (I'll take suggestions too)
Darque Nov 29, 2007, 02:05 PM Just out of interest...I finally recently found a picture of a Temple of Lolth:
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/DrowUnderdark_Gallery/104429.jpg
woodelf Nov 29, 2007, 03:44 PM Did I make something for that?
Darque Nov 29, 2007, 04:32 PM Yes...the spider shaped temple.
It would make an interesting Drow Palace, though.
Darque Dec 06, 2007, 12:22 PM I found a description of the Temple of Corellon:
The temple dedicated to Corellon Larethian, called the House of the Creator by many, takes the form of a great domed structure, with soaring minarets and towers and a main entrance flanked by two obelisks of black marble.
Darque Dec 06, 2007, 12:59 PM For the temple of Moradin how about something like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/1586_Rome_obelisk_erection.jpg
woodelf Dec 06, 2007, 01:13 PM For the temple of Moradin how about something like this:
Which part? Not the ropes and stuff I hope.
Honestly, I can't tell what that pic is. Can you post a link so I can read about it and make sense of it.
The Temple of Corellon description is nice, very helpful.
Darque Dec 06, 2007, 01:50 PM No not the ropes, just the general shape. Not much to read about it either.
woodelf Dec 07, 2007, 06:07 AM How's this for an untextured Corellon Temple? Does it have enough minarets and is the scale for the obelisks and minarets good?
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/CorTem.jpg
Darque Dec 07, 2007, 10:06 AM Make the minarets 25% shorter, and add 2 more of them. Then I think they should be good.
Do you think its a good idea to add a few trees on the path to the entrance?
woodelf Dec 07, 2007, 12:06 PM Where do you want the other 2?
If win can add trees and do the transperency then it's a good idea. ;)
Darque Dec 07, 2007, 01:34 PM Where do you want the other 2?
If win can add trees and do the transperency then it's a good idea. ;)
Evenly space out the 4 minarets and the obolisks, keeping the obolisks where they are.
As for the trees, what if we use the trees found in Dragonia\Assets\art\Terrain\Features\ancient ? Theses are the ancient trees that grow only in elven lands. Now, if we want to upgrade the textures/models for those trees, that would be excellent ;)
woodelf Dec 07, 2007, 01:48 PM So the minarets and obelisks are 6 points on a hexagon? Ok.
woodelf Dec 08, 2007, 09:00 AM Here's the Erthynul Temple with another excellent texture from win.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/Erythnul0000.JPG
Files (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7786)
Darque Dec 08, 2007, 03:19 PM Thanks guys. Looks great :goodjob:
woodelf Dec 08, 2007, 03:52 PM Thanks. winddelay's texturing is phenomenal.
Darque Dec 11, 2007, 10:15 AM Woodelf, any progress with the Corellon Temple?
woodelf Dec 11, 2007, 11:56 AM If win has time to texture it then it could be done real soon. I won't have time for any texturing until early next week.
Darque Dec 11, 2007, 01:38 PM ok, sounds good. Whats next on your list?
woodelf Dec 11, 2007, 06:43 PM Give me a top 5, will you? I'm going to be burnt from Civ and computers in general after playtesting Shadow until my eyes/ears bleed, but in a good way. With holidays and my daughter's birthday party coming up as well I can't promise too much.
Darque Dec 11, 2007, 10:02 PM Temple of Moradin
Necropolis
Shrine of Nerull
Temple of Heironeous
Shrine of Heironeous
woodelf Dec 12, 2007, 07:36 AM How will the Temple of Moradin and the Seat of Moradin differentiate?
Is the original Crypt being used still? If not that could be a Necropolis for now.
Shrine of Nerull (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2137)?
What is the texture style for Heironeous?
Darque Dec 12, 2007, 08:47 AM ok, the crypt to use as the shrine of nerull is sufficient
Have the statue for the shrine of Heironeous be made of bronze
The temple of heironeouse should be made of stone
I'll try to find a good description of the Temple of Moradin. But basically its a temple building with a forge in it.
Darque Dec 12, 2007, 10:27 AM Found a clue on Dwarven temples:
Unlike surface temples, which build upward, the dwarves' temples to Moradin and the other dwarven deities seem to be simple shrines on the surface but build downward, spiraling through levels accessible to lay worshipers toward the Mysteries visited only by the
priests in the roots of the earth.
At the center of every temple to Moradin is a massive forge, where the weapons and armor that defend the dwarf people are made. The best weapon- and armorsmiths in the world usually work in Moradin’s temples.
The temple of Moradin is an impressive building. The roof is little more than decorative panels hung from the beams that stretch overhead, and the walls are covered with bas-relief sculptures portraying the legends of Moradin and his wife Mya. The interior is open except for a door in the back, leading to living quarters and offices below. At the back of the large, open space is a giant, elaborate forge that never goes dark. This forge is the altar of Moradin, where all rituals and religious celebrations are held.
woodelf Dec 12, 2007, 04:14 PM All good descriptions, but a Temple building with a forge IN it could be just a building with an imagined forge inside. Do you want it open air to show this forge or have a forge outside? This is where a lot of my mental roadblocks come from.
woodelf Dec 12, 2007, 04:23 PM Any chance that the Zeus Wonder could be reskinned bronze for the Heironeous Shrine?
woodelf Dec 12, 2007, 04:36 PM Found this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5937261&postcount=33) from 9-11-07. Will that Numenor building still work?
Darque Dec 12, 2007, 04:45 PM All good descriptions, but a Temple building with a forge IN it could be just a building with an imagined forge inside. Do you want it open air to show this forge or have a forge outside? This is where a lot of my mental roadblocks come from.
I just reviewed previous posts...I think I suggested that the Temple of Moradin follow the general shape of the image in post 18 (without the ropes).
Also regarding the forge, it just means a chimney will be needed (probobly at the highest point of the building. If possible, it would be nice to show smoke.
Darque Dec 12, 2007, 06:07 PM Any chance that the Zeus Wonder could be reskinned bronze for the Heironeous Shrine?
The Zeus statue will work if we can change his staff and angel to a sword and shield. The building around him can be removed too. Finally, make sure the poly count isn't to high, as this will be a common building.
EDIT: I was browsing around the current buildings in Civ4 and have found one called King's Sega. I think it will work perfect for this shrine.
Darque Dec 12, 2007, 06:08 PM Found this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=5937261&postcount=33) from 9-11-07. Will that Numenor building still work?
I'll try using that building and see how it works for the Temple of Moradin.
woodelf Dec 13, 2007, 03:00 AM King's Sega? Sounds cool, but I don't know what it is.
Darque Dec 13, 2007, 08:19 AM This is the King's Saga:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/52033/kings_saga.jpg
woodelf Dec 13, 2007, 08:28 AM Looks cool.
woodelf Dec 13, 2007, 03:07 PM Is the King's Saga from BtS or Vanilla? If it's anything except vanilla can you zip up the folder and upload it for me? I'd like to import it and modify it some.
woodelf Dec 15, 2007, 08:46 AM How's this for the Heironeous Temple? I had started it several months back.

Lets loose the outer walls, but add a grass field in front with some military training equipment. Also, add a lightning bolt on the center tower (similar to how catholic cathedrals have a cross)
The Temple of Corellon looks awesome, guys. Thanks for the great work.
woodelf Dec 16, 2007, 07:57 AM Here's the Corellon Temple (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7835). I'll have to see what I can add to the other. win gave me some transparent weapons/armor models, but I don't think they'll look good when the camera moves around. Firaxis must have something made I can steal.
Darque Dec 20, 2007, 09:44 AM Any progress on the Temple of Heironeous?
woodelf Dec 20, 2007, 09:49 AM Any progress on the Temple of Heironeous?
Removing the wall will be easy, but I don't know when I'll find time to do the weapons/armor. Is there a Firaxis building that has some? I haven't played in several days and don't see any freetime coming until Sunday to do much more than basic modeling.
Darque Dec 20, 2007, 10:28 AM Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\FfH Age of Ice\Assets\art\structures\buildings\Training Yard has some training dummies.
Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\FfH Age of Ice\Assets\art\structures\buildings\Archery Range has some archery targets
I'll find more in a little bit
woodelf Dec 20, 2007, 02:47 PM Damn, I forgot I had archery range equipment as well. I'll try to avoid our company this weekend and finish it up. ;)
Darque Dec 20, 2007, 02:51 PM Feel free to wait until after xmas if you are busy. Unless you really want to avoid your company and are just using me as an excuse for that :P
rocklikeafool Mar 14, 2008, 01:59 AM Wow, guys, I really like it all. Good work. Please keep going. Can't wait to see em ingame.
