View Full Version : [Graphics] Citysets
Darque Nov 14, 2007, 08:52 AM For the elves, I am using hrochland's elven cityset
woodelf has completed the orc cityset
winddelay is working on lizardfolk citysetNext cityset to think about is a dwarven cityset. Any ideas on this one?
woodelf Nov 14, 2007, 09:13 AM Visually I'm not sure how to represent them since houses and such don't seem right. Do you have an idea because I don't mind making lots of tiny models if I have a theme.
Did hrochland make a dwarven one as well?
Darque Nov 14, 2007, 09:23 AM hrochland's dwarven buildings are all normal looking wooden buildings. You can see them in the first post of his Fantasy Buildings thread.
I do think that anything we choose, if should somehow be made of stone or rock and not wood.
In Dragonia I, I used a cityset that looked like a castle built into some mountains:http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/52033/dwarvencity.jpg
woodelf Nov 14, 2007, 10:48 AM I'm trying to avoid the mountain look because the cities grow differently in Civ4 than CivIII.
Pick a style from some architecture and I'll elaborate. Round, square, triangular, short, or whatever. I made SMAC citysets with very little to go on so it can be done.
Darque Nov 14, 2007, 11:02 AM Lets use structures that tend to be rectangular, and maybe add one or two cylindrical buildings. Use a mixture of short and tall. Keep the roofs flat, and the texture should be large grey stone.
woodelf Nov 14, 2007, 03:50 PM flat flat roofs? What texture, slate or stone slabs?
Darque Nov 14, 2007, 08:06 PM Lets see both slate and stone, and then I will be able to make a better choice.
woodelf Nov 15, 2007, 06:06 AM This is not a finished texture, but it's the only dds I had to play with to show some stonework on this very simple building. Keep in mind we need 18 different models for a cityset and some have to be, well, simple. Is this the general style you're looking for with the basic 1x1 slots?

It's ultra low poly, but that's a good thing because we can splurge on a couple 2x1s and 2x2s.
Darque Nov 15, 2007, 08:11 AM Looks fine. Keep going with it.
woodelf Nov 15, 2007, 10:48 AM Here's a shot with 9 untextured models that include several interchangeable pieces (stairs, chimney, barrels).
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32561/DCity.jpg
Darque Nov 15, 2007, 11:41 AM Looking good so far. Can you add one or two cylindrical towers to the mix?
Also, thinking about it, can you make the chimneys that jut out the side of the building and then go up round instead of square? Those can then be textured for a metallic look.
woodelf Nov 15, 2007, 11:49 AM How many sides on the cylindrical towers?
Darque Nov 15, 2007, 11:57 AM I think eight would be a sufficient number. What do you think?
woodelf Nov 15, 2007, 12:09 PM I think 8 is a good number.
woodelf Nov 16, 2007, 05:08 AM I asked winddelay to touch up my dds and he (of course) made it excellent. I'm not sure why I bother with textures when he's available. :)
He didn't like the stone roof and I never mentioned the metal, rounded chimney, but here is how the above render shot looks textured.

I'm planning 2 towers, an ore cart with ore pile, and maybe a statue or 2 to finish up the 18 model set.
Thoughts?
Darque Nov 16, 2007, 08:46 AM Looking pretty good, but some small changes needed. It looks great close-up, but since most of the time the buildings are zoomed out, I think the stone pattern on the buildings and chimneys will need better contrast and the chumney pattern should use a larger scale. At the current contrast/scale level, I think for the most part the pattern will wash away and just look grey. Also, I take it shadows will be added to the final product?
woodelf Nov 16, 2007, 08:51 AM Yeah, shadows are easy to add in later. The texture contrast can be touched up too on the dds.
Is the roof okay as is?
Darque Nov 16, 2007, 09:41 AM Yes, the roof will work well.
woodelf Nov 27, 2007, 04:29 AM Here's a pic of the dwarven set winddelay textured and set up as a nif.

I think it looks terrific.
Darque Nov 27, 2007, 07:07 AM I agree. Great job guys. :goodjob:
woodelf Nov 27, 2007, 03:56 PM Thanks. File here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7697).
Darque Nov 27, 2007, 10:56 PM Dwarven cityset now implemented.
Last one for now is the lizardfolk cityset. Any status on this one guys?
winddelay Nov 28, 2007, 03:00 AM I've already got the cityset set up, it's just kind of crappy looking ATM... I'll work on that today, get the ancient set up at least, and do shadows.
woodelf Nov 28, 2007, 04:11 AM Will the lizzie set look better if it uses Rhye's swamp base terrain? I don't know how to do that, but I think that's important. The cobblestone won't work for them.
winddelay Nov 28, 2007, 08:34 AM Rhye's swamp uses a different kind of dds setup entirely... I'll take care of the base graphics.
woodelf Nov 28, 2007, 09:11 AM I can't wait to that set in action!
woodelf Dec 04, 2007, 03:19 AM I see hrochland finished his darkelf set. I'm not sure it's dark or evil enough myself, but it's up to you Darque. The set that win and I are trudging through will be a lot more Drow like.
Darque Dec 04, 2007, 10:54 AM Thats a dark elf city? Looks like a reskinned elf city to me and not at all drow like. Continue on woodelf. I can't wait to see what the two of you are creating.

I agree, looks like the color of the roofs is all that changed?
woodelf Dec 05, 2007, 04:57 AM What sort of "extras" would be in a drow city? Making 18 models of just buildings is boring, which is why we've been adding in fountains, mines, wells, ect to break them up in the other ones. But what would look good for the Drow? win has a good crystal model to use, but beyond that I'm at a loss as to how to break up the monotony of just buildings.
seZereth Jan 27, 2008, 05:20 AM that dwarven city set looks awesome!
(we could use it for RoK in FfH :P)
woodelf Jan 27, 2008, 06:59 AM Thanks SeZ.
woodelf Jan 29, 2008, 03:13 PM Just so you don't feel abandoned Darque...once win whips up a drow texture I'll put it onto the buildings I have done. I'm getting better at filling up the 18 spots for a city.
Darque Jan 29, 2008, 03:33 PM Sounds good, woodelf. I can't wait to see the end result :D
rocklikeafool Mar 27, 2008, 07:33 PM For the elves, I am using hrochland's elven cityset
woodelf has completed the orc cityset
winddelay is working on lizardfolk cityset
Is there any way I could see pics of these? I'm not sure if they are done or not. Jus wonderin, man.
Darque Mar 27, 2008, 07:43 PM Those citysets were already released in beta 1. I have since fixed the ground texture.
rocklikeafool Mar 27, 2008, 10:29 PM Ok, so I've already seen those then. Sweet. I thought that these were sposed to be implemented in Beta 2.
Darque Mar 27, 2008, 10:58 PM In Beta 2, the new Drow cityset will be available. A Screenshot of it is available in the Image Gallery.
rocklikeafool Mar 27, 2008, 11:11 PM Nice. Very nice. I like that. I especially like how's it's got the sorta underground type feel to it. But aboveground still. Like a Drow city should look, since they did come from Underdark. I also like how the style gives off a bit of a sinister aura. It looks incredibly sweet.
