I built a couple spies to explore the area because I didn't feel like getting screwed by the RNG and have an axeman die in battle, and I came across a tribal hut with a barbarian warrior guarding it. I move my spy to it, and hey presto! :D

It sounds like a good idea now to load a caravel with a spy to pop huts that are guarded pre-Astronomy.

That's awesome! So you were able to pop the hut without any reprocussions? I deffinatly have to try this in my current game.

lol, very smart :p the barbs guarding huts are really bothering me when playing on terra map because explorers can't get them. maybe I'll try this.

you still have the same odds of getting bad things that you would if you had an axe. I suppose your spy won't die though I suppose.

Well it is a great way to screw over your opponent. Either 1) you get the hut and he doesnt or 2) you spawn lots of evil barbs for him ot deal with, and that can't see you.

I no longer use explorers or other units to go after late era guarded goody huts.....

I found this out oh....a few months back. Thought about it, and sure enough, I use my spy and out pops a scout, and I leave the guarding archer alone to wander for a few centuries on his own little Icy Island......:lol:

I tried this out last night on my Terra map game... works like a charm. Only thing is the barb that occupied the space is left without a place, and is forced to wonder aimlessly across the map... haha AI get ready for a barb rush!!!

No, the idea is that you can put the spy in the caravel, and begin popping huts on other continents/islands, without having to wait for Astronomy to build galleons, which would allow the combat units to attack the barb guarding the hut.

and Astronomy is actually one of the techs you can pop from a hut! so it's worth the effort :)
