View Full Version : Orc city set

Nov 16, 2007, 04:49 PM
I finished the buildings for size #1 :)

Nov 16, 2007, 04:54 PM
Looks pretty nice. What orks though. From what fantasy.

Nov 16, 2007, 05:03 PM

Looks amazing but they need more spikes and poles and stuff :)

Nov 16, 2007, 05:04 PM
It is from Warcraft and some other sources.

Do you have any pics? It is hard to find anything apart from the buildings in Warcraft.

Nov 16, 2007, 05:17 PM
Nice. :)

They seem a bit too shiny, however. Try increasing the "Ambience" setting and reducing the "Specularity" settings in the material window.

Nov 16, 2007, 07:43 PM
Wait.. I`m confused. Is it from Warhammer of Warcraft? Cos if its Warhammer, I`ll try to get you some good pictures of orcy "architecture".

And yeah, definately too shiny.

Nov 17, 2007, 04:35 AM
Yes, post pics from WH :)

The shine can be easily fixed, and i will probably change that.
I will need at least two new buildings to complete the set.

Nov 17, 2007, 04:47 AM
You heard it here first: WAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

I always wanted to do that

Cool, Varwnos! :)

Nov 17, 2007, 06:14 AM
Here it is without the shine:

Nov 17, 2007, 07:22 AM
Woah.. If all the orc brains in the world got together they couldn`t think of a wall looking like that. Infact, they would probably go and tear down a similar looking one, in Bretonnia or wherever.

Pictures coming up. Stay tuned.

I like the buildings, but the wall is very un-orky. I'd suggest a pallisade. :)

Nov 17, 2007, 07:52 AM
The statue is a dwarf actually.

Nov 17, 2007, 08:27 AM
I created a new wall:

I trust you don't intend to keep that colour? The shape looks good enough, if perhaps a bit too tidy.

Nov 17, 2007, 08:52 AM
Well it would not be the first time some wood has been painted green, and in one of the pics the wall indeed was green.

Anyway, there is also this other version:

Nov 17, 2007, 08:52 AM
I don`t know about other orcs, but this ain`t gonna fit in WH, WC and LotR :(

Its more Teletubbies than orcs..

Try imagine half-eaten dwarfs in that place..

Nov 17, 2007, 08:54 AM
If you make the buildings less shiny and make the pallisades thinner, then the set would look a great deal better. :)

Nov 17, 2007, 09:02 AM
I don`t know.. it somehow looks to perfect. I know its the limits of the program. But orcs don`t build stuff. They throw a bunch of planks together and beat the crap out of them with a hammer (or the nearest gobbo), probably not even using nails, until it holds together. Somehow.

If they invented the wheel, they would`ve invented Destruction Derby instead of chariots..

Nov 17, 2007, 09:05 AM
Your work is too civilized and polished for orcs. :) It looks nice, but it resembles more a citiset of some fairies than orcs... No offense, I really love your style. But you'll probably need to make them a lot less tidy and clean to make them fit the Orcs. :)

Edit: Crosspost with Stormrage.

Nov 17, 2007, 09:23 AM
Ok, i created a new wooden wall, this time a bit more rough.

Nov 17, 2007, 09:27 AM
The wall looks much better :)

Nov 17, 2007, 10:35 AM
The wall looks much better. :)

However, overall, I'd still say it's way too clean for an Orc city. My suggestions would me:
- change the textures of the houses... make them look as un-taken-care-of as possible (also make the entrances less exact and correct, and the poles or whatever they are less perpendicular to the ground) - I'd recommend totally "revolutionizing" the texture of the houses
- throw random objects on the floor (MANY of them), around houses and the centerpiece, etc. Make them all kinds of objects - wooden, metal, whatever
- make the wall much, much less regular (my suggestion would be NOT using any formula for placing those poles or whatever they are - duplicate and place them by hand, then play with the rotation to make them seem even more irregular
- a green hill so clean and nice doesn't really work with an ork city...
- I'd also place spaces in the wall... making visible other elements inside
- maybe change even the shape of the houses, making it more irregular, not only the texture. They look a bit like mushrooms right now.

Please don't take offense in those suggestions, you know I love your work. :)

Ditto on everything Mirc said. About the hill.. a mud hill would work better.

Nov 17, 2007, 11:18 AM
Pick one from these four terrains:

Nov 17, 2007, 11:22 AM
And here you can compare it with the human set:

Nov 17, 2007, 11:24 AM
I would choose the first (top-left) version, maybe slightly darkened. :)

Nov 17, 2007, 12:17 PM
Top left or bottom right. :)

Nov 17, 2007, 12:27 PM
Top left. :)

Ok, what do you think about size #2 and the two new buildings? :)

The tower(?) to the right looks rather odd, and out of style with the other buildings.

Nov 17, 2007, 01:59 PM
I think the new buidlings looks good. BTW, in the walled version, the hut on the far side looks like its floating.

What is the central building, btw?

The tower fits the concept art I posted. Only it looks like stone (color) :hmm:

Nov 17, 2007, 02:04 PM
The new buildings are very nice. :goodjob:

However, I still think it's way too orderly - especially the houses and the terrain (there should be more things randomly placed there, IMHO). :)

I think if you manage to get this set to look really Orcish, you'll probably be the most diverse .pcx creator. :)

Nov 18, 2007, 06:51 AM
varw it looks fantastic!!!

put some spears, flags, sculls etc. in the backyard
and make those huts look like a cactus, with metal sharp things standing out! :)
