flamingzaroc121 Nov 16, 2007, 06:41 PM Yes finally a new one of these
Someone asks a question, then the person who answers the question right (wait for confirmation from the question asker) gets to ask the next question, but if they can't come up with anything, they can call Open Floor (use bolded words) and the first person with a question continues from there. You have to have at least one question in between answers so it doesnt become a 2-person spamfest I might come up with a rule about how long the question can sit out without an answer.
Here is an examplePerson A asks a question
Person B answers correctly
Person B calls Open Floor
Person C comes up with a new question
Make sure you dont do anything too hard, I'll start
Which 5 American Football teams in the NFL use a bird for their name?
Catharsis Nov 17, 2007, 06:08 AM I think I know two, but that's all:
The Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks
D'Artagnan59 Nov 17, 2007, 07:54 AM Cardinals, Falcons, Seahawks, Eagles (my dad's favorite team), and Ravens.
Keeping with the theme, Tommy Henrich of the Yankees reached first on a passed ball, leading to a Yankees rally, winning the 1941 World Series for them. Who was the Dodgers catcher that dropped the passed ball?
Niklas Nov 17, 2007, 08:31 AM Bah, Americocentrism for the win? :p
D'Artagnan59 Nov 17, 2007, 02:07 PM No.
Added a hint to the question.
carmen510 Nov 17, 2007, 06:45 PM Mickey Owen? I'm pretty sure that's it.
D'Artagnan59 Nov 17, 2007, 07:20 PM You are correct.
carmen510 Nov 17, 2007, 07:24 PM To turn this into a whole new direction:
Translate into English OR translate from English to Latin.

I'll edit a question in later
Niklas Nov 18, 2007, 04:36 AM Hrhrm...
You have to have at least one question in between answers so it doesnt become a 2-person spamfest
And what happened to that edited-in question? :p
D'Artagnan59 Nov 18, 2007, 07:32 AM flamingzaroc: Yes, tied with Mountain Dew. (the soda I was actually getting a huge caffeine buzz off of)
Vault isn't counted because I got a cold from it.
flamingzaroc121 Nov 18, 2007, 10:40 AM Here it is:

D'Artagnan59 Nov 18, 2007, 10:47 AM Green.
Open Floor.
Niklas Nov 18, 2007, 10:51 AM D'Artagnan, seriously, follow the rules! Let at least one other person go between before you answer again.
Sweet revenge: What nation is the only reigning champions ever that did not qualify for play-offs in the football World Cup?
EDIT: To clarify, play-off is when there's only 16 teams left, after the first group rounds are completed.
Izipo Nov 18, 2007, 01:11 PM Italy ?
XCL
Niklas Nov 18, 2007, 01:15 PM Nope .
EDIT: Added clarification above.
Izipo Nov 18, 2007, 01:18 PM
I was quite sure it was that... Just wasn't ready to say it out loud.
Okay then, it was France, 1998 world champions, ousted from the 2002 world cup in the play-offs... :shame::facepalm:
I'll think of a question and come back.
Niklas Nov 18, 2007, 01:25 PM Right you are. :D
Though no need to be ashamed, at least France was world champions in 1998. Sweden's best is a silver from 1958 (iirc). ;)
Izipo Nov 18, 2007, 01:46 PM Okay then...
This is for you Niklas, but you can't answer :p
Which one is bigger : The number of atoms in the observable universe, or the number of possible chess games ?
You need to give me the number and its name, of course.
Niklas Nov 18, 2007, 02:51 PM Now that was really interesting. Since I'm not allowed to answer, I went to look it up. I intuitively knew the answer to the either-or, but I had no idea what the number actually was.
D'Artagnan59 Nov 18, 2007, 05:46 PM Chess games.
10^80 for atoms, 10^123 for chess games.
Izipo Nov 18, 2007, 05:57 PM Good answer. The number is called Shannon's number and is HUGE !
You should look up Graham's number next.
This wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders_of_magnitude_%28numbers%29) page is mind-boggling.
D'Art, your turn.
Steph Nov 21, 2007, 05:40 AM Chess games.
10^80 for atoms, 10^123 for chess games.
Go is 10^365
D'Artagnan59 Nov 21, 2007, 05:20 PM Who is Aeris's mother in Final Fantasy 7?
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 06:36 AM :bump:
What company uses this logo:
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/7503/quiz111wj5.jpg
Ekolite Feb 23, 2008, 07:37 AM Idk but the guy who made it had clearly only vaguely heard of a lion when he drew it, and never actually seen one. :p
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 07:40 AM According to Wikipedia, it is actually a dog. :D
If you have watched Formula One races, this logo should be familiar. It's a Italian company.
D'Artagnan59 Feb 23, 2008, 07:49 AM Ferrari???
Ekolite Feb 23, 2008, 08:02 AM Agip. Open floor.
Ekolite Feb 23, 2008, 08:02 AM Looked up fire breathing dog logo lol
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 08:27 AM Yeah, it was Agip. Did the dog/Italian clues give it away?
While I'm at it, here's a new question:
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6681/quiz112hd0.jpg
What city is within the red marking? Perhaps you know the name of the area as well?
Catharsis Feb 23, 2008, 08:38 AM Istanbul??
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 08:49 AM Nope, it's somewhere in America. ;)
Stuck in Pi Feb 23, 2008, 09:12 AM Detroit? (1o char)
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 09:43 AM No, but right country. The water you see is ocean.
Steph Feb 23, 2008, 10:33 AM Easy question
That's San Francisco, with the Golden Gate at the top of your red circle. The body of water to the west is the Pacific, and to the right it's the San Franciso bay.

Well, actually, I did not bought a T shirt in San Francisco
Olav Feb 23, 2008, 10:40 AM Very good Steph. The area I mentioned is Bay Area.
Been there, done that, got the T shirt.
You don't sound very impressed. :p
Your turn!
Olav Feb 24, 2008, 03:50 AM Come on then, Steph! :hammer:
Steph Feb 24, 2008, 01:03 PM Give the 5 countries with the largest Exclusive Economic Zone, including territorial waters, with their approximate size.
Ozbenno Feb 25, 2008, 05:56 AM I would have a stab at...
Russia, Canada, USA, Australia, Brazil
Steph Feb 25, 2008, 06:18 AM Some are in the top five, some are not.
And you did not get an approximat size.
I'm not after the exact size, but I'm more interested by the relative size.
Something like the first is twice as big as the second, etc.
Ozbenno Feb 25, 2008, 06:20 AM No idea about relative size, was banking on largest coastlines being right
Steph Feb 25, 2008, 06:45 AM Well, it's not enough...
Olav Mar 26, 2008, 02:11 AM Well, a month with no activity is enough for me, so here's a new question. :p
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/2562/quiz119dz6.jpg
In what city do you find this building?
Ozbenno Mar 26, 2008, 06:09 AM Barcelona?
Olav Mar 26, 2008, 06:24 AM Nope, not Barcelona... but you're on the right continent. :)
Ekolite Mar 28, 2008, 11:19 AM Paris? ..................
Olav Mar 28, 2008, 11:37 AM No. The city is in a german-speaking country.
nonconformist Mar 28, 2008, 12:33 PM Wien ?
D'Artagnan59 Mar 28, 2008, 01:07 PM Aachen????
Olav Mar 28, 2008, 02:40 PM You nailed it, noncon. :goodjob: It's the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna.
nonconformist Mar 29, 2008, 10:39 AM Okay:
Who, where, and what was the name of the occasion?
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6375/0501025ob9.jpg
nonconformist Mar 30, 2008, 07:38 PM No guesses?
taillesskangaru Mar 31, 2008, 01:30 AM Looks like something from the Eastern Side of the Iron Curtain.
Olav Mar 31, 2008, 08:26 AM Well, it's not my turn, but I give it a shot: The man is Willy Brandt, and I think it's in front of some monument from WWII. I don't know what the name of the occasion is, though...
Steph Mar 31, 2008, 09:15 AM Looks like something from the Eastern Side of the Iron Curtain.
Well, according to a current trend at CFC, some may argue it's something from the Central Side of the Iron Curtain.
nonconformist Mar 31, 2008, 10:07 AM Well, it's not my turn, but I give it a shot: The man is Willy Brandt, and I think it's in front of some monument from WWII. I don't know what the name of the occasion is, though...
Close enough.
It's Chanceller Willi Brandt, in Warsaw, kneeling at the plaque commemorating the Warsaw Uprising, where he spontaneously fell to his knee sin what is know as the "Warshauer Kniefall"
Olav Mar 31, 2008, 10:37 AM Alright, yet another building/city question:
http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/2235/quiz120mz5.jpg
In what city do you find this spectacular building, and what is it called? Note: the building will be finished in late 2008.
nonconformist Mar 31, 2008, 10:49 AM Looks vaguely like Paris' La Defence
Olav Mar 31, 2008, 11:19 AM :nope:
Here's the building ~2 weeks ago (I took the photo while driving past it):
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/4209/img9028ta2.jpg
It's in Asia...
Izipo Mar 31, 2008, 11:21 AM Well, you know, Paris... Shangai, they're only a few kilometers away :mischief:;)
The fact that your location says you're in China until the 23rd might be a pointer...
Very nice building btw.
Olav Mar 31, 2008, 11:39 AM Well, you know, Paris... Shangai, they're only a few kilometers away :mischief:;)
The fact that your location says you're in China until the 23rd might be a pointer...
Very nice building btw.
It's in China alright, but Shanghai is not the correct answer. ;) Thanks for reminding me to change location. :D
Ozbenno Mar 31, 2008, 04:00 PM How about Beijing then!
Olav Apr 01, 2008, 12:37 AM It is indeed in Beijing - and the name of the building is CCTV Headquarters.
Your turn, Ozbenno!
Ozbenno Apr 01, 2008, 12:55 AM OK then, who is the youngest and oldest man to win the Australian Tennis Open?
Steph Apr 01, 2008, 01:01 AM I would answer, but I'm sulking as nobody answered my question previously in the quizz.:(
Ozbenno Apr 01, 2008, 01:44 AM I would answer, but I'm sulking as nobody answered my question previously in the quizz.:(
I answered, I just got it wrong :p
Izipo Apr 01, 2008, 03:51 AM OK then, who is the youngest and oldest man to win the Australian Tennis Open?
André Agassi ?
I would answer, but I'm sulking as nobody answered my question previously in the quizz.:(
Well, ne never had the answer either. And you'll have to admit it was a very difficult question.
Steph Apr 01, 2008, 05:13 AM It was an easy question!
Anyway, here is the answer, so you can go to bed a bit less ignorant this evening!
The top five countries with the largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) are :
- USA 11,351,000 kmē
- France 11,035,000 kmē
- Australia 8,148,250 kmē
- Russia 7,566,673 kmē
- Canada 5,599,077 kmē
The funny part is having France second, just after the USA
The EEZ of France covers approximately 8% of the total surface of all the EEZs of the world, whereas the land area of the French Republic is only 0.45% of the total land area of the Earth
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/EEZ_France.png
Note also that the EEZ of the European Union is shared, with a combined zone amounts to 25 million kmē.
Ozbenno Apr 01, 2008, 05:31 AM André Agassi ?
Nope Nope 10chars
Olav Apr 01, 2008, 08:36 AM Is it Pete Sampras?
Interesting figures there, Steph. France still owns a island outside Newfoundland? How is the figures if you include onshore area?
Steph Apr 01, 2008, 08:48 AM Interesting figures there, Steph. France still owns a island outside Newfoundland? How is the figures if you include onshore area?
Yes, that's Saint Pierre et Miquelon.
If you include onshore area + EEZ + territorial waters, you get
1) Russia : 24,641,873 kmē
2) USA : 20,982,418 kmē
3) Australia : 15,835,100 kmē
4) Canada : 15,583,747 kmē
5) Brazil : 12,175,831 kmē
6) France : 11,709,843 kmē
7) China : 10,476,979 kmē
Making France the 6th largest on Earth
Ozbenno Apr 01, 2008, 02:49 PM Interesting that Australia is 3rd largest, maybe its because of all those great tennis players we had!
Grisu Apr 02, 2008, 04:45 AM Interesting that Australia is 3rd largest, maybe its because of all those great tennis players we had!
hmm...would one of them be the youngest and oldest melbourne-winner? :mischief:
Ozbenno Apr 02, 2008, 04:59 AM hmm...would one of them be the youngest and oldest melbourne-winner? :mischief:
Actually, now you mention it, yes!
Steph Apr 02, 2008, 05:22 AM I'm not sure I understand the question well.
Are we searching someone who was both the youngest and the oldest player to win?
or
are we searching two person, one who was the youngest, and the one who was the oldest?
Ozbenno Apr 02, 2008, 05:35 AM One person, he was the youngest ever and oldest ever to win
Olav Apr 02, 2008, 06:06 AM Lleyton Hewitt? It's the only Australian tennis player I know of...
woodelf Apr 02, 2008, 06:34 AM Was Rod Laver Australian?
Ozbenno Apr 02, 2008, 02:45 PM Rod Laver is much closer (in era) the Hewitt to the correct answer.
Went by the nickname "Muscles".
woodelf Apr 03, 2008, 04:45 AM That French chick? She has muscles. :p
I have no clue.
Ozbenno Apr 03, 2008, 05:08 AM You guys don't know your Aussie tennis stars of yesteryear!!
it is of course Ken Rosewall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Rosewall).He won (as an 18 year old) in 1953 and also in 1972 (as a 37 year old), being the youngest and oldest player to win the Aussie open.
Open floor.
Olav Apr 03, 2008, 12:22 PM This one should be quite easy: What nation uses this flag?
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/7089/quiz121nx2.jpg
Grisu Apr 03, 2008, 02:20 PM that should be Bhutan
Olav Apr 03, 2008, 02:40 PM That would be correct.
Grisu Apr 03, 2008, 02:43 PM ok, here's the next one:
Name the officially Top 8 hockey nations in international Ice Hockey, preferably in the right order.
nonconformist Apr 03, 2008, 03:28 PM 1.Canada
2.USA
3.Switzerland
4.Russia
5.China
6.France
7.Germany
8.Finland
Grisu Apr 04, 2008, 12:25 AM there's three countries in there that don't belong there (and as a result three countries missing). Most notably, the top ranked country is missing....
Steph Apr 04, 2008, 12:37 AM Isn't the Czech republic in the top?
Grisu Apr 04, 2008, 01:06 AM somewhere up there, yes.....
Olav Apr 04, 2008, 02:02 AM I don't think China and Switzerland (sorry, Kaeptn :p) should be on that list. And maybe not France or Germany either. The replacements should indeed be the Czhech Republic, and Sweden and perhaps Denmark.
Grisu Apr 04, 2008, 02:18 AM I don't think China and Switzerland (sorry, Kaeptn :p) should be on that list. And maybe not France or Germany either. The replacements should indeed be the Czhech Republic, and Sweden and perhaps Denmark.
no need to be sorry...doesn't make you right, though :p
the maybe-part is correct, the perhaps-part not, and the first sentance is only half-right :p
Olav Apr 04, 2008, 04:42 AM So... Switzerland is in, but not China. And both France and Germany are out. Lets see:
- Czhech R
- Switzerland
- Finland
- Sweden
- USA
- Canada
- Russia
- ???
I guess the last one is Italy. No, Belarus! :D
Grisu Apr 04, 2008, 05:24 AM the missing country used one country together with one of those already mentioned....now it should be obvious :)
Olav Apr 04, 2008, 05:27 AM Ah, Slovakia?
Grisu Apr 04, 2008, 05:47 AM :goodjob:
the official order:
1 Sweden
2 Canada
3 Finland
4 Czech Rep.
5 Russia
6 Slovakia
7 USA
8 Switzerland
you're on :)
Olav Apr 04, 2008, 05:58 AM Great! I didn't know Slovakia was so good at hockey, not Switzerland either.
Ah well, here's the new one. Who is this?
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/6174/quiz122ly2.jpg
Olav Apr 05, 2008, 02:01 AM No guesses? Don't you watch the news anymore?! :p
He's a president for a country...
taillesskangaru Apr 05, 2008, 03:00 AM Evo Morales, President of Bolivia and the sanest leftist to rule in South America since Salvador Allende.
Olav Apr 05, 2008, 03:07 AM Correct on all accounts! :goodjob:
taillesskangaru Apr 05, 2008, 04:31 AM http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m51/Grenadier_539/Quiz.jpg
Name the island, the country it belongs to, and the name of the city marked by the star (preferably without search :) )
Izipo Apr 05, 2008, 04:37 AM St Pierre or Miquelon, off the coast of Newfoundland ?
taillesskangaru Apr 05, 2008, 04:55 AM Nope. :)
Clue: think southern hemisphere
Izipo Apr 05, 2008, 05:15 AM Ah, then that would be one of those islands near the Antarctic.
Crozet Island maybe ?
EDIT : Although I highly doubt it. IIRC it's uninhabited.
Steph Apr 05, 2008, 05:36 AM It's Mahé, the largest island in the Seychelles. It used to be French until the evil English stole in 1814.
Hence the French sounding names (Belle Ombre, Cerf, Boileau).
taillesskangaru Apr 07, 2008, 12:12 AM Steph got it :goodjob:
The city marked by the star is called Victoria, by the way.
Grisu Apr 08, 2008, 02:45 AM Steph? Next Question?
Olav Apr 09, 2008, 11:13 AM Come on then, Stephie! :hammer:
nonconformist Apr 09, 2008, 01:11 PM I'll take a quickie if you don't mind:
Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
Grisu Apr 09, 2008, 02:25 PM umm, Shaft?
Catharsis Apr 09, 2008, 02:27 PM Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?

nonconformist Apr 09, 2008, 05:52 PM umm, Shaft?
You're damn right.
Grisu Apr 10, 2008, 12:25 AM umm, can't think of anything serious now so just a quick one as well:
Whose measures are: 42-39-56?
:)
Ozbenno Apr 10, 2008, 12:29 AM Rosie maybe?
Grisu Apr 10, 2008, 12:37 AM :goodjob:
Rosie it is :)
Ozbenno Apr 10, 2008, 02:09 AM The record for attendance at a baseball game was recently broken by the Dodgers and Red Sox at the LA Colliseum. Where was the previous attendance record and who was playing?
nonconformist Apr 10, 2008, 07:35 AM Was it the 1942 Stalingrad game between the Red Army and the German 6th Army?
Ozbenno Apr 10, 2008, 07:38 AM Was it the 1942 Stalingrad game between the Red Army and the German 6th Army?
That was the most casualties at a game IIRC.
Olav Apr 10, 2008, 08:54 AM More sports questions, Ozbenno? :p
I haven't the slightest idea what it is...
Ozbenno Apr 10, 2008, 08:57 AM More sports questions, Ozbenno? :p
Guilty as charged.
I actually have a really good non-sports related question but forgot it
Steph Apr 11, 2008, 11:45 PM I was in Norway the whole week and couldn't check the forum.
It seems you had fun without me anyway
Ozbenno Apr 11, 2008, 11:55 PM Well it seems no-one knows the answer so I'll open floor (no sports next time I promise).
The answer is:
A game in 1956 at the Melbourne Olympics between Australia and a US services team. Over 110,000 people went.
Olav Apr 12, 2008, 01:39 AM 110,000? That's pretty impressive. How many were at the LA Colliseum?
Where in Norway were you, Steph?
Also, new question: What city has won a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world?
The city is quite large; over 2 million in population.
Ozbenno Apr 12, 2008, 01:50 AM I've actually been there but as I just asked won't say. Really interesting place.
115,000 at the LA Coliseum
Steph Apr 12, 2008, 01:53 AM Where in Norway were you, Steph?
Also, new question: What city has won a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most remote city from any sea in the world?
Hey! I know this one! Oslo!
Izipo Apr 12, 2008, 02:09 AM Really ? No way, I would have thought somewhere in China or Mongolia.
Olav Apr 12, 2008, 02:41 AM Ah, Oslo. I hope you had luck with the weather - longer north (Trondheim) it is still quite cold.
Izipo: You're on the right track!
Steph Apr 12, 2008, 03:22 AM The weather was a bit cold, and we had rain only one day.
Oh, and BTW, Urumqi.
Olav Apr 12, 2008, 03:34 AM It is indeed Urumqi! :goodjob:
Izipo Apr 12, 2008, 05:27 PM See, what did I tell you...
Here's an interesting article about that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_of_inaccessibility).
Olav Apr 13, 2008, 05:23 AM Steph!
Interesting article, by the way Izipo.
Olav Apr 14, 2008, 07:19 AM Ok, a quick one: Who uses this logo?
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/5852/quiz124cd7.jpg
Catharsis Apr 14, 2008, 09:06 AM Subaru, I think.
Izipo Apr 14, 2008, 09:52 AM I think he's right.
Olav Apr 14, 2008, 10:37 AM Subaru it is. :yup:
Catharsis Apr 14, 2008, 01:30 PM Please name all of these men.
http://www.anvilarts.org.uk/whatson/2007/images/250/isihac.jpg
Ozbenno Apr 14, 2008, 05:11 PM Tim Brooke-Taylor centre back?
Catharsis Apr 14, 2008, 05:18 PM It is indeed the TBT-dawg.
nonconformist Apr 15, 2008, 09:11 AM Jeremy Hardy, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, Humphrey Littleton and Barry Cryer, i.e the I'm sorry, I Haven't A Clue gang.
Catharsis Apr 15, 2008, 10:11 AM Indeed they are. Noncon's up.
Olav Apr 17, 2008, 02:07 PM noncon? :wavey:
nonconformist Apr 18, 2008, 08:30 AM Whoops, sorry, exam period coming up and revision is important :D
Who is the highest scoring sniper of all time?
Izipo Apr 18, 2008, 08:52 AM Lee Harvey Oswald ??
EDIT : Not meant to be funny or insulting. I was just wondering what you meant by 'highest scoring'. And of course the word sniper brought this particular event to the forefront.
nonconformist Apr 18, 2008, 09:00 AM By "highest scoring" I mean the largest number of confirmed kills.
Oswald it isn't, since his kill limit was ostensibly one (he was USMC, but I don't think he was ever in combat).
But he was a pretty good shooter to get three rounds off using a bolt rifle and getting two hits in a couple of seconds.
Izipo Apr 18, 2008, 09:28 AM Ah, that would be that Russian guy in the battle of Stalingrad, then ?
Looking back on my previous post, makes me blush now... Somehow I thought "a US president must be worth at least a thousand points".
Olav Apr 18, 2008, 11:46 AM Yeah, it must be him. That guy in Enemy at the Gates. Zaitsev or something?
nonconformist Apr 18, 2008, 01:43 PM Nope. I knew some of you would walkn into that trap :D
Zaitsev's accomplishments were largely made up by Red Star. His true kill total is generally considered by most (minus Russian/Soviet nationalists) to be much lower than that quoted.
I'm looking for someone else :D
Steph Apr 18, 2008, 02:55 PM Zaytzec has "only" around 250 confirmed kills.
Lyudmila Pavlichenko is a Russian female sniper with more than 300.
The record is Finnish. More than 500 kills.
Olav Apr 22, 2008, 10:47 AM The record is Finnish. More than 500 kills.
Is it Simo Häyhä you're thinking of?
Steph Apr 22, 2008, 11:03 AM I don't know the name, I just know he's Finnish
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 02:22 AM Lets pretend that you got it right, Steph.
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 02:58 AM Lets pretend I asked a question then
Where is the southern most grave for a German military during WWII?
Ozbenno Apr 25, 2008, 03:02 AM Well there is the site of the Kormoron raider of the coast of Western Australia, that just got designated a war grave.
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 03:04 AM Further to the South
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 04:45 AM South Georgia perhaps?
taillesskangaru Apr 25, 2008, 04:56 AM Montevideo?
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 06:28 AM No and No.
But at least you are in the correct hemisphere :D
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 08:03 AM No and No.
But at least you are in the correct hemisphere :D
:yeah:
South in Argentina? Who's been closest until now, by the way?
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 08:51 AM Ozbeno: 4,000 km off
Olav : 6,600 km off
Taillesskangaru: 9,300 km off
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 09:22 AM Ok, so it's between Australia and South Georgia somewhere. Knowing you right, it has something to do with France (:p)... Kerguelen perhaps?
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 09:29 AM Kerguelen it is!
The German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis called at Kerguelen during December 1940. During their stay the crew performed maintenance and replenished their water supplies. The ship's first fatality of the war came when a sailor fell while painting the funnel. He is buried in what is sometimes referred to as "the most southerly German grave" of the Second World War
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 09:34 AM What on earth were they doing down there? Was it anything of value at Kerguelen?
Ok, which painter painted this painting?
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/5161/scandyl3.jpg
Steph Apr 25, 2008, 10:07 AM What on earth were they doing down there? Was it anything of value at Kerguelen?
"During their stay the crew performed maintenance and replenished their water supplies"
Does it answer your question?
Mise Apr 25, 2008, 12:48 PM Rembrant ?
Olav Apr 25, 2008, 02:35 PM Yes! It's the Night Watch.
"During their stay the crew performed maintenance and replenished their water supplies"
Does it answer your question?
Well, I was more wondering what the ship was doing in a remote location like that in the first place... but nevermind.
Mise Apr 25, 2008, 02:46 PM Yay! I remember seeing it when I went to Holland. (At least I think it was that one... It was something by Rembrandt.)
*opens floor*
philippe Apr 26, 2008, 04:18 PM Rembrand is great! :) you saw it Mise, at the Rijksmusuem in Amsterdam :)
My question: Who directed the film Dune?
Ozbenno Apr 26, 2008, 05:12 PM David Lynch?
philippe Apr 27, 2008, 04:29 AM David Lynch?
Bingo! And oh my that is some nice movie to watch at night!
Ozbenno Apr 27, 2008, 05:28 AM OK then....
Name the two countries (on seperate continents) with capital cities that are pronouced the same (although spelled differently.
Catharsis Apr 27, 2008, 05:34 AM Is Jamaica one of them?
Ozbenno Apr 27, 2008, 06:20 AM Nope........
Olav Apr 27, 2008, 06:31 AM What about Guyana? Georgetown seems to be a pretty common name, but I don't know about other capitals with that name though.
D'Artagnan59 Apr 27, 2008, 10:20 AM Just in case you've tricked us...
Jamaica and St. Vincent?
Ekolite Apr 27, 2008, 10:41 AM Hey D'art, I thought you were leaving forum games? :p
Luckymoose Apr 27, 2008, 10:47 AM New Zealand.
Steph Apr 27, 2008, 11:10 AM OK then....
Name the two countries (on seperate continents) with capital cities that are pronouced the same (although spelled differently.
I think your question is a bit strange.
Guayna = Georgetown
Caiman islandd = George town
Jamaica = Kingston
Norfolk island= Kingston
St Vincent & Grenadines : Kingstown
Guadeloupe = Basse Terre
Saint Kitts & Nevis = Basseterre
Ozbenno Apr 27, 2008, 04:00 PM Nope to all, countires are on seperate continents and the capitals are spelled differently but pronounced the same.
Mise Apr 28, 2008, 01:49 PM Is it a British overseas territory, whose capital is London, but in their native language, is spelt differently (but pronounced the same)...?
(or French or German or etc etc)
Ozbenno Apr 28, 2008, 03:51 PM No to Mise.
Next clue, Asia and Africa are the continents. If no-one gets it I'll post the answer tonight.
choxorn Apr 28, 2008, 06:52 PM Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Jerusalem, Israel?
Ozbenno Apr 28, 2008, 07:22 PM Wrong but the African capital is close in a way.
taillesskangaru Apr 29, 2008, 02:14 AM Accra, Ghana and Dacca, Bangladesh?
Ozbenno Apr 29, 2008, 02:26 AM So close and yet not quite right (one is though)
Olav Apr 29, 2008, 07:54 AM Dacca and Dakar?
Ozbenno Apr 29, 2008, 07:57 AM Yep, capitals of Senegal (Dakar) and Bangladesh (Dhaka or Dacca).
Olav Apr 29, 2008, 08:09 AM Heh, didn't know they were pronounced the same.
Ok, more geography: What map projection (more correct to say coordinate system) is this?
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2711/scandiu9.jpg
Izipo Apr 29, 2008, 03:01 PM Looks like the NATO UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator), but I've never seen it used on such a large scale, so I may be wrong.
Olav Apr 29, 2008, 11:37 PM UTM it is!
Steph Apr 30, 2008, 06:19 AM It is NOT!!
This is just a grid to know what UTM zone you should use (like UTM 31).
This is a UTM coordinate system
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/Usgs_map_traverse_mercator.PNG
See how the longitude/latitude lines end up as curve in a real UTM, when they are straight lines on the picture you showed.
@Izipo: It's normal you have never seen UTM used on such a large scale, because it can't be used. A UTM coordinate system is valid for 6° of longitude, hence the 60 time zone needed to cover the globe.
@ Ozbenno : how do you think Dakar and Dacca are pronounced? I doubt they are pronounced the same.
Olav Apr 30, 2008, 11:07 AM I was hoping no one here knew that much about UTM... ;). You're right about that Steph - it is only a grid showing where the zones are. But I think Izipo should get the next question, as mine was a bit vague...
Izipo Apr 30, 2008, 01:31 PM Oh, it brings back baaad memories. See that line between zones 30 and 31 ? I was once posted near that line... Made for some fun traveling when I didn't pay extra close attention to the coordinates given.
Anyways, now I have to think up a quick question...
Here's one for our fellow americans (but others can play too ;)) :
What is the highest rank in the US armed forces ?
Stuck in Pi Apr 30, 2008, 01:45 PM Is it president?
Izipo Apr 30, 2008, 02:19 PM Nope.
POTUS is the commander-in-chief of the US armed forces, but it's not a rank (or grade) in the armed forces.
Steph Apr 30, 2008, 03:14 PM I was hoping no one here knew that much about UTM... ;).
Unfortunately for you, I'm developping and marketing an aeronautical procedure design software based on a geographical information system, and when we sell it to a new country, we are using by default a UTM coordinate system, if the user doesn't require a more specific one.
@Izipo: that's General of the armies (note the plural), hold by only two people : Pershing and George Washington.
The line between 30 and 31 is rather long, it extend from North to South... Including France.
Izipo Apr 30, 2008, 03:30 PM @Izipo: that's General of the armies (note the plural), hold by only two people : Pershing and George Washington.
:goodjob: Correct.
Actually, George Washington's rank is General of the armies of the United States, having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present" (link (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Public_Law_94-479))
The line between 30 and 31 is rather long, it extend from North to South... Including France.
Yep, that's when I was posted in the Southwest of France... :) (In Cazaux, if you really want to know).
Steph May 01, 2008, 02:14 AM And what did you do in BA 120? I made my "classes" in BA 115, and then I was officially in 101, although I went there only twice, the first day and then 9 months later to give my gear back.
I have users of my software close to BA 106. In fact they are not really in the base, they are in the same building as the SIA, in the second stair : DIA / DIRCAM.
IT's not really general knowledge, but I find this fun...
In the French chasseurs alpins, it is forbidden to name one colour, except for specific circumstances.
What if is this colour, and what's the wayt to speak about it without naming it?
Izipo May 01, 2008, 02:55 AM And what did you do in BA 120? I made my "classes" in BA 115, and then I was officially in 101, although I went there only twice, the first day and then 9 months later to give my gear back.
Did basic training at the Plateau d'Albion (BA 200), where we used to have our ICBMs (it's closed now), further training in Nîmes (BA726, closed too), posted 2 years in Nice (BA943, radar base), then Rochefort (BA721) for some Non-com training, Toulon where I got my nursing diploma, as I was head of the class I get to pick my next posting and chose Cazaux (BA120). Spent 6 years there, great place, excellent job, finished my stint in charge of the pharmacy and deputy head nurse of the base. Then got promoted to head nurse of the CFAS headquarters (our Strategic Air Command) here in Taverny, where I'll stay for another couple of years.
As I always say, we have a lousy pay but get to go places and do interesting stuff.
I have users of my software close to BA 106. In fact they are not really in the base, they are in the same building as the SIA, in the second stair : DIA / DIRCAM.
Hmm, I might have seen your software in action, since we also have the DIRCAM HQ at my base. It's a small world.
IT's not really general knowledge, but I find this fun...
In the French chasseurs alpins, it is forbidden to name one colour, except for specific circumstances.
What if is this colour, and what's the wayt to speak about it without naming it?
Of course I know the answer to this one, but I'll let the others search for a while ;).
btw Steph, I'm always astounded at the vastness of your knowledge.
Cheers.
Steph May 01, 2008, 04:55 AM Hmm, I might have seen your software in action, since we also have the DIRCAM HQ at my base. It's a small world.
I know the DIRCAM HQ is at Taverny, but my software it use only by the DIRCAM cell in the DIA office at Bordeaux (at least for the French military).
btw Steph, I'm always astounded at the vastness of your knowledge.
Cheers.
That's because I pick the quizz where I know the answers, and keep a low profile for the others ;).
And I'm lucky that some ask questions about topic I know, such as the UTM one.
Izipo May 01, 2008, 06:11 AM Don't be shy, I've seen you in other threads...
So, no takers for the Alpine troops question ?
Olav May 01, 2008, 10:26 AM I don't know it.
a_propagandist May 01, 2008, 07:59 PM White? Say "neige" instead?
Steph May 02, 2008, 01:37 AM No. The "replacing name" is a lot more bizarre.
taillesskangaru May 02, 2008, 08:55 AM White. Replacing name = charcoal?
Steph May 02, 2008, 10:12 AM The colour is not white.
Hint: the colour was "forbidden" after Napoleon III introduced a change of uniform.
Perfection May 03, 2008, 11:53 PM BLUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!?
Steph May 04, 2008, 01:21 PM Not blue. I know it's a rather hard question, and I don't expect you to know the answer, but you can perhaps guess it.
Hint 1: Think of the French uniforms of the late 19th century
Hint 2: Think of the role of chasseurs, and try to imagine what change of the uniform they would not like at all, to the point of banning the name of the colour.
a_propagandist May 04, 2008, 01:28 PM Red? With the zouaves and stuff?
Steph May 04, 2008, 01:35 PM Yes! Red!
Napoleon III wanted the chasseurs to wear red trousers, which was not seen as a very smart move for skirmish and recon, which are tasks that the chasseurs will do more often than line infantry.
So red is a forbidden colour (you have some exception, you can use red when speaking of the lips of women, or when speaking of the cords of the legion d'honneur).
Instead, chasseurs are using "Bleu cerise" (= cherry blue).
Olav May 07, 2008, 12:05 PM While we wait for a_p
What ship is this?
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7463/scandsc7.jpg
http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/6391/scandfg8.jpg
Bonus points if you know where it was sunk!
A little hint: One of the ships supply vessels was involved in an incident infringing Norwegian neutrality during WWII.
Izipo May 07, 2008, 01:42 PM I'm pretty sure I've found it, but it involved a lot of (very instructive) searching.
Was it sunk in the southern hemisphere ?
Olav May 07, 2008, 01:50 PM I don't mind using searching to find answers, as it is a picture quiz... so go ahead and post your answer if you want to, Izipo. ;)
And yes, it was sunk in the southern hemisphere.
Izipo May 07, 2008, 02:00 PM Another 10 minutes of Wiki, and I have positively ID'ed it.
Since it was a very interesting search, I'll let others search for it too ;).
My first guess was partly correct, and it launched me on the right track. I only used the supply ship hint to confirm the whole story.
The trick is to guess the class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warship) of that ship (took me 3 tries), the rest should be easy.
Steph May 07, 2008, 05:28 PM As it's in WWII and it involved a Norwegian neutrality, we can guess ithe hint points to a German, or possibly British ship.
It has only one turret of 3 guns on the front. So it's probably a Deutschland class Panzerschiff (armed with 6x280mm, cheers to Wyrmshadow who "forced" me to make an excel spreadsheets with info about all his units for my civ3 mod).
So it means 3 ships. Deutschland (Lutzow), Admiral Scheer, or Graf spee.
A quick complementary search gave the Altmark, supply ship of the Graf Spee, captured by an British destroyer Cossacks in Norwegian territorial water (my guess that the British would be somehow involved in a treacherous move was right).
The Graf Spee was scuttled by its crew after leaving Montevideo, to avoid a battle it couldn't win. If you need the exact location, it's there 34°58′18″S 56°18′4″W (http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&q=-34.971667,-56.301111&ie=UTF8&ll=-34.971667,-56.301111&spn=0.507525,0.928345&z=10)
a_propagandist May 07, 2008, 06:47 PM Sorry for the silence. Open floor. Or over to Steph. Or back. Whatever.
Olav May 08, 2008, 12:32 AM Very nice Steph. :goodjob: And lots of bonus points for exact location. :) I guess you had found the same answer, Izipo?
Here's some more pics of the ship: http://www.maritimequest.com/warship_directory/germany/pages/cruisers/admiral_graf_spee.htm
Steph May 08, 2008, 12:57 AM Very nice Steph. :goodjob: And lots of bonus points for exact location. :) I guess you had found the same answer, Izipo?
Here's some more pics of the ship: http://www.maritimequest.com/warship_directory/germany/pages/cruisers/admiral_graf_spee.htm
Well, wiki should get the bonus point for the exact location, I only new it was when exiting the harbour of Montevideo.
Izipo May 08, 2008, 01:42 AM Indeed, Wiki should get the floor. ;)
I first thought it was the Prinz Eugen because I remembered doing a model of it when I was a lad, but the guns turned out to be wrong. So it was a smaller ship. I searched Heavy cruisers for a while and got sidetracked on Operation Crossroads because I wrongly assumed it was one of the ships sunk in the atomic bomb detonation at Bikini.
Then I found the pocket battleships class and there it was.
The Altmark incident confirmed the story.
A very interesting story and a first class Captain, btw.
Olav May 08, 2008, 02:06 AM I find it interesting that the ship sank 9 merchants ships, but no lives were lost.
Anyway, perhaps a_p should get the floor? It is technically his turn. And I don't think Wiki would post a question anytime soon... ;)
Olav May 09, 2008, 04:17 AM Come on then, someone gotta have a question! :hammer:
Steph May 09, 2008, 05:53 AM In George W Bush, W stands for Walker.
And for the other presidents? What does the middle letter stand for?
William H. Harrison
James K. Polk
Ulysses S. Grant
Rutherford B. Hayes
Chester A. Arthur
William H. Taft
Warren G. Harding
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Harry S. Truman
Dwight D. Eisenhower
John F. Kennedy
Lyndon B. Johnson
George H. W. Bush
Olav May 09, 2008, 06:45 AM I think I only know Roosevelt and Truman...
Steph May 09, 2008, 06:48 AM Send me a PM with the answers, so I can tell who finds the most and can answer next question
Steph May 09, 2008, 07:35 AM taillesskangaru : 6 points... Can get to 7
Steph May 09, 2008, 08:07 AM Choxorn : 11
Taillesskangaru : 6
Steph May 09, 2008, 09:18 AM Choxorn : 11
Catharsis : 8
Taillesskangaru : 6
Steph May 09, 2008, 12:00 PM Choxorn : 11
Catharsis : 8
Taillesskangaru : 6
Izipo: 5.
With some interesting guesses (where did you find Severus??).
Izipo May 09, 2008, 12:33 PM Wow, that was fast.
So, I guess you didn't read Harry Potter ? Good for you, total waste of money. But I still bought them anyway, first editions. Well, Severus is the good/bad guy, and it was the first name beginning with an S that popped to my mind.
And I had 2 correct guesses out of the ludicrous list I sent you...
Steph May 09, 2008, 03:13 PM D'Artagnan is the first to find the full list.
- William Henry Harrison
- James Knox Polk
- Hiram Ulysse Grant (in fact Ulysse Simpson Grant but that's not his real name)
- Rutherford Birchard Hayes
- Chester Alan Arthur
- William Howard Taft
- Warren Gamaliel Harding
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
- Harry S Truman (yes, that's just an S, with nothing behind).
- Dwight David Eisenhower
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy
- Lyndon Baines Johnson
- George Herbert Walker Bush
I particularly like Gamaliel and Birchard :D And the S of course.
D'Artagnan59 May 09, 2008, 03:50 PM Yes. My friend's middle name is R.
choxorn May 09, 2008, 04:10 PM DAMN IT! I could have gotten Grant and Truman had I known those facts about their names!
Izipo May 09, 2008, 04:42 PM Harry Severus Truman is still better :p
Olav May 10, 2008, 12:36 PM Haul ass, D'Art! :whipped:
Harry Severus Truman is still better :p
Heh, I thought it was Semour.
D'Artagnan59 May 10, 2008, 07:17 PM Which famous lead singer of a popular rock band went to London School of Economics?
choxorn May 10, 2008, 07:38 PM Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.
Thank you, wikipedia. :p
Olav May 12, 2008, 04:12 AM choxorn? :wavey:
Izipo May 12, 2008, 03:49 PM He's that guy with the Arbiter avatar who is co GM of RfmK III...
Sorry, wasn't that the next question ? :mischief:
choxorn May 12, 2008, 05:53 PM Sorry, I was waiting for D'art to confirm this. He seems to not doing so, so here's my question.
Not counting the sun, what is the closest star to Earth that is visible to the naked eye and not part of a double or triple star system?
Stuck in Pi May 12, 2008, 08:24 PM Alpha Centauri!
choxorn May 12, 2008, 08:46 PM That's a Triple Star System, and a wrong answer.
Olav May 12, 2008, 11:47 PM Betelgeuse?
Steph May 13, 2008, 12:39 AM Proxima centauri is closer than Alpha centauri, but it is a triple star system.
Then you have Barnard's Star, but it's not visible with the naked eye. Later you'll see Sirius, but it's a double star system.
By the way, there is a strange anecdote about Sirius. There is an African tribe (the Dogons), who seems to have some extraordinary astronomical knowledge. They for instance know that Sirius A has a faint companion Sirius B, but this companion can be observed only with a telescope and was first seen in 1862...
So some claim they were settled on Earth by Aliens thousands of years ago, and that they were coming from Sirius.
So, that left us with Epsilon Eridani.
choxorn May 13, 2008, 08:32 AM Epsilon Eridani it is. :goodjob:
Steph May 13, 2008, 08:50 AM Damn! I now have to find a question!
Hmm...
At the end of his general studies, Valery Giscard d'Estaing (who will be president of the French republic from 1974 to 1981) took the entry exam to the Ecole Nationale Polytechnique (the most prestigious French high school). He succeeded... but decided not to go to this school. Why?
Olav May 13, 2008, 09:44 AM Because he became president then? :p
