View Full Version : Honorable Game
Grump Nov 17, 2007, 04:38 AM Anybody try a game where you don't allow yourself to do anything that would be classified as evil or underhanded in RL?
Basically something like this and maybe some other things?
No Slavery/whipping, police state, or serfdom
must do everything possible to prevent starvation
Defensive wars only/no preemptive attacks/that includes barbarians or pillaging
no disbanding cities (razing and conquest are already precluded by above)
no nuking
espionage points can only be used for counterespionage
cities can only be captured in defensive war/cities can be captured for defense but must be handed back after war/or no foreign cities are allowed to be captured

Sometimes I roleplay as a civilization, by doing the exact same things they did for the most part and changing government civics at the same dates they did.
Draknith Nov 17, 2007, 01:48 PM I've tried a few games like this. The only problem is I end up being too nice and helpful, and fall behind in too many categories. Also, I tend to be involved in more wars when I take a more peaceful approach to my actions.
Premier Valle Nov 17, 2007, 03:15 PM Yeah, I do play with some of those rules all the time, for example I never use slavery (unless I realy need it, but it has only happened one time).
However I do not have a "no nukes" limitation, however I will only use/research them if needed.
I only raze cities to create cutural-buffer zones (in case my goal is not the destruction/vassalisation (or should I say capitulation) of the enemy civ).
I rarely use espionage, only in pre-war, war, post-war times, and sometimes as retaliation for enemy espionage.
When I recapture one of my allies cities I will give it back to them (to be honest, not every time, but most of the time.)
I surely try to prevent starvation.
And also, I never exterminate a civ (unless is a realy hated one that commited crimes against my people).
However I do also play to be the dominant nation on the world, so I'm not friendly with every one, as I won't allow my people to be treated as second class (remember monty anyone?)

Are you speaking of real life Moctezuma?
dragodon64 Nov 18, 2007, 03:52 PM Instead of being nice (which is contrary to the purpose of running a government), I try to be realistic: if someone asks to join a war, I always do; I run appropriate civics (often needs Pyramids), I build units that go with my image of them (America's in trouble until Gunpowder).

I meant the game one, but now that you mention it...
Brownie Nov 19, 2007, 01:08 PM I used to play like that, but this site has cured me of that ... At least I can win now :D :D :D
hossam Nov 20, 2007, 03:48 PM i sometimes do the opposite, by running police state, slavery, nationhood and theocracy just because i feel like being big brother

I consider myself to be an honourable person.
Yva!n Nov 20, 2007, 05:37 PM In Civ II you had a 'reputation'. The challenge for me was to always have an 'impeccable' international rep at the end of the game. Meaning you never (got caught) starting a war, reneging on treaties et al. It helped with your diplomatic efforts (or more precisely if you broke treaties your neighbors would remember it) .
