It's not illegal to duplicate a copy of something you own. It's illegal to distribute copies.

If you have a music program like itunes, just insert the Cd into the drive and usually iTunes will automatically open and ask if you want to copy (import) the songs to your HDD. Say yes and watch it happen.

Alright, get DVD Decrypter and Nero Recode, then i'll give you a step by step.

Moved.

Backing-up: Fine.

But any discussions on getting around coy protection etc will be over the line, and will see this thread closed, andt he offenders dealt with.

And yes: I realise copy protection may stop legitimate backing-up, but the line needs to be somewhere.

Couldn't the line be drawn at infringing copyright?

Thankfully getting round copyright restrictions, when you're not infringing copyright, is legal in most of the world - though yes, I believe in the US it's illegal to hold down the shift key (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/09/sunncomm_to_sue_shift_key/)...

AIUI, any DVD ripping involves bypassing copyright restrictions, so we can't tell you. Ripping (non-crippled) CDs is fine though.

Which ironically, is the only thing it stops, as illegitamate users simply download copies without copy copy protection.

mdwh covered the rest, there isn't much detail that can be gone into without getting around copy protection, which is present in almost all commercial media.
