View Full Version : I almost feel sorry for Tokugawa
Bushface Nov 17, 2007, 04:13 PM He's been bottom of the scores list since I met him, and (being the ultimate isolationist) has never opened his borders to anybody nor done any trading; he has 4 clams, for example, and there are no others on the map. He had Iron, but lost the tile when Gandhi's borders expanded about 1000 years ago, and Horse, which he lost similarly to Frederick somewhat more recently. By now he has lost three of his original six cities, and recently put the other three on to Research (of Aesthetics) and then wasted a turn by having a revolution to Organised Religion: he is now researching Literature, still with all his cities on Research.
Kagoshima should fall to Gandhi, who is now my vassal, next turn, when Osaka should fall as well, this time to Frederick who is also my vassal. Kyoto is starving, because I have units on all its tiles, using my "steel carpet" technique, and its defence is being whittled down by a Treb of mine at a steady -6% per turn.
So why doesn't he attack my Treb ? Because he has no mounted units to perform a flanking attack on it, it is unaffected by collateral damage from his remaining 6 or 7 catapults, and is defended by two of my Tanks. If they do get a chip or two, I move them away to heal and replace them with fresh ones, of which I have plenty.
And why haven't I taken Kyoto ? Because I'm waiting for my best Tank+Warlord unit to heal (one more turn) and I want it to get the additional 2XPs to make Level 11 and 101XPs, the highest I have ever managed.
Powerslave Nov 17, 2007, 04:46 PM Bravo, sir. 101xp is quite an accomplishment. Wouldn't it be ironic if you lost it in a >99.999% battle? But I'm sure you'll do fine.
lord_joakim Nov 17, 2007, 04:53 PM Tokugawa is always middle-down on the list...

Don't we all? Don't let him fool you though; a horde of his ridiculously over-promoted rifles may pose a temporary challenge to your single Modern Armor
L4zXX0r Nov 17, 2007, 07:21 PM lol, STEEL CARPET TECH!

Are you playing as a charismatic leader?
gettingfat Nov 17, 2007, 09:36 PM Feel sorry for Toku?? This guy almost always close border on me, but can be pleased with the other AIs because of that hidden "respect for warmongers" crxp. Even in rare occasion he eventually becomes pleased with me because of shared religion he still won't trade much, so his presence actually helps little. To destroy him it usually takes at least 20% more units because of his double nasty trait combo. I think he was designed with only one purpose - to annoy human players, and nothing more.
Arksa Nov 18, 2007, 04:27 AM In one of my games Toku asked me to become his Protector, meaning that he would become vassal. I never knew he would bow down so easily :D.

Bushface Nov 18, 2007, 03:23 PM Convert to his religion ? When he was the only civ not to follow my faith ?
By the way, he's dead now, and the world became mine - alas, not IRL.

Quite a lot of time Toku's religion doesn't get to my own cities, and i can't convert him because of the close border, or only 1 of my cities gets converted. And even with the same religion and getting a trade relationship +4 bonus, most of the time he will only be pleased (still not likely to trade anything useful). He actually backstabbed me once. I believe if Toku is your neighbour, finishing him off is still the most reliable way to avoid trouble.
dragodon64 Nov 18, 2007, 03:27 PM Simply irritating that they made a genius like Tokugawa such a fool in this game. Alas, at least you can show the world what Japan when you play as him ;).

I had him offer once, while I was at war with someone else much bigger then me... I was "sure, I can use the help"

Yeah I meant if he was your closest and only neighbor, not in your case. Great game you got going there though.

The game designers simply don't know why Toku succeeded in the first place. He did it primarily by diplomacy and some timely aggression. This guy first vassalized himself to Nobunaga, then allied himself to Toyotomi after Nobunaga's death. He probably knew the art of diplomacy more than at least 80% of other leaders in the game.
seasnake Nov 18, 2007, 07:50 PM So much fun to play though, I love infantry with 10 billion first strikes.
niels251 Nov 19, 2007, 04:49 AM if you play as him he is very fun. Right now i'm playing an game with insanely promoted samurais. For the first time Boudica is my friend right now gifting me recources and money. I have never seen that happening. Becuase of that i will let Boudica life. If i ask for something Boudica will just give it tom me.
King of Town Nov 19, 2007, 04:57 AM I thought toku was pretty bad to play against too, and then I put on aggresssive AI and then he was a beast. Especially after gunpowder, the way his rifleman get promoted it's pretty tough to ake those cities from his cold dead hands. He was trying to raid my civ all the time, and poor Hammurabi didn't stand a chance.

Shared religion is not the way to get open borders with Tokugawa, for the reasons you just described. You should try shared war. If he has a weak neighbour, he'll attack them eventually, and that's when you can get cozy enough with him that he'll agree to open borders and let you spread your religion. Of course, if he's already giving you a "heathen religion" penalty before you get the chance to become a war ally, you can forget about the open borders.
