View Full Version : Books on Ancient Greece, Christianity, etc.
z_step18 Nov 24, 2007, 02:27 PM Hello. This is my first post on this account. I had one awhile back, but something happened to it.
What books would anyone recommend on the comprehensive history of Christianity, or those of the Roman Catholic Church/Protestantism.
What books would anyone recommend on Ancient Greece. Although I'm very interested in learning about this, I know very little besides the very basics.
Thank you in advance.

"The History of Christian Thought" by Jonathan Hill is an excellent and readable book on how Christian thought grew and changed over Time.
Anything by Michael Grant on Greece or Rome is very good.
Civfan333 Nov 27, 2007, 12:46 PM Well, for the christian thought, I'd suggest the bible.:D
ohcrapitsnico Nov 27, 2007, 06:17 PM I would say on such popular and broad subjects there would be plenty. Maybe a thorough search of amazon will get you closer.
Plotinus Nov 28, 2007, 05:34 AM "The History of Christian Thought" by Jonathan Hill is an excellent and readable book on how Christian thought grew and changed over Time.
I can't argue with that! However, one that's more suited to what you're looking for might be The New Lion Handbook: The History of Christianity (Zondervan handbook, if you're in America), by the same amazingly talented author. It will give you a good overview of the whole of Christian history throughout the world, as well as lots of ideas for further reading.
I can also recommend the following books on general Christian history:
Gritsch, E. A history of Lutheranism Minneapolis, MN: Fortress 2002
Hastings, A., ed. A world history of Christianity London: Cassell 1999
Küng, H. Christianity London: SCM 1995
McBrien, R. Catholicism 3rd ed. London: Geoffrey Chapman 1994
McManners, J., ed. The Oxford history of Christianity Oxford: Oxford University Press 1990
On antiquities, one book I really like is Ancient history: from the first civilizations to the Renaissance by J. M. Roberts (London: Baird 2004). Much more wide-ranging than just Greece but all very interesting stuff.
z_step18 Nov 28, 2007, 03:20 PM Thank you Plotinus, and birdjaguar. I've heard of a few of those, but I'll be sure to check out the rest.

As usual, Plotinus provides more than enough to satisfy all, but the most hardcore academic, but as is also typical, he neglects to identify himself as the excellent author of two of the excellent books mentioned. ;) I suggest you start with: The New Lion Handbook: The History of Christianity
Mesix Nov 29, 2007, 06:12 AM A really good biography of Alexander the Great:
Alexander of Macedon by Peter Green
It is a historical biography that reads almost like a novel. Alexander was technically not Greek, but he did spread Greek cultural influence in the ancient world.
