there is of course no defnite answers, but i would like to condemn you for your obvious eurocentric choices. :D j/k

anyhow, on my list of the top:

- Genghis Khan - ultimate conqueror
- Asoka - one of the nicest emperors ever
- Quang Truong - Vietnamese Emperor who nearly would've beat the crap out of China had he not died
- Alexander the Great - nice conquests
- Theodora - shes hot, and shes got brains.

But, i do object to some of the choices on the list...

Mao: i don't want to debate this.

Lenin: Similar condition to Mao, except there wasn't as many deaths

Franklin Roosevelt: Thuogh i wouldn't say hes horrible, i think he is sometimes overrated... but im not really sure.

But I just noticed the majority of the leaders are from Europe/European Colonies, so... :)

This is really hard to judge. And do you mean just national (political) leaders or does this include spiritual leaders and military leaders as well?

Here's some of the best I can think of at this moment:

Genghis Khan - possibly the greatest conquerer in all history
Stalin - yes he was a mass murderer, but he was pretty successful overall as leader of the USSR. Before he came to power Russia was an economic backwater, its people were half-starving and largely illiterate. Stalin changed Russia from that to a great industrial and military superpower, and this is despite revolution, famines, international isolation, near-annihilation in World War II and Stalin's own abuse of power. And if anyone have ever gotten close to ruling the whole world, it was Stalin (by the time of his death he controlled roughly 2/5 of humanity, either directly or indirectly).
Akbar the Great - building and consolidating an empire in India when you belong to a minority group is not an easy task. He did it very successfully.
Franklin D. Roosevelt - started with a country demoralised and crippled by the Depression. By the time he was done USA had became a superpower, militarily, economically, technologically.
Asoka - agree with cybrx. He was one of the nicest (and most successful) Indian rulers (he wasn't always that way though, so he's the perfect role model for people who wanted to reform themselves).

 Play CivIII much?

Greatest leader of all time is tough. Sure, the Great Khan wins for greatest conquerer, but the greatest leader is another question altogether. I abstain for now.

I chose Lincoln, because he won the Civil War, prevented America from becoming a slave-infested nation, and he had psychic powers!

Ramses III was arguably the last "great" pharaoh of the Egyptian New Kingdom. Apparently, he repelled a Sea Peoples invasion and did a bunch of other stuff, and is also well known for possibly being assassinated, because there was a confusing little story about an assassination of a certain pharaoh which most likely was him. but despite being so, he is not as "great" as Thuthmosis III, for example.

I think he meant Ramses II, otherwise I simply can't understand it either.

Ramses II, from what I know, was not a great leader at all. He was naive in military strategy, nearly bringing about the entire slaughter of the Egyptian army by the Hittites (had not it been by sheer luck some reinforcements came). And then he built a bunch of useless huge monuments (even more than any other pharaoh, i think) saying how great he was even thuogh he didn't relaly do anything great.

I guess Asia doesnt exist in Canadian textbooks not quite, but we do tend to learn about our immediete surroundings before the rest of the world first (gr 10) and i really shouldve put in more asian leaders and for that i apologise

I voted other, but only because I didn't notice Bismarck in the list. Within under 30 years of power he transformed Prussia from a minor European power to the strongest nation on the continent and did it relatively peacefully with only two short wars that were far more significant politically than in terms of loss of life.

There isn't really "one greatest leader". There are quite a few great ones, maybe a great one per area, but not one greatest one for the whole world.

Of course not, but it does make for good conversation which is the important thing.

Well, Bismarck lead three wars to unify Germany. Anyway: There isn't a greatest leader in the world. You can't simply compare them. However some on the list, especially Stalin and Mao, should be excluded because of being mass murderers. These guys don't deserve to be metioned here.

Alexander wasn't that much of a leader. He was a great conqueror and tactician, but had no understanding of stability and consolidation. Basically a one trick pony.

Victoria didn't have much executive powers.

Julius Caesar was one of the few super-men of history but he didn't live to rule a stable empire so we don't really know anything about this aspect of his personality.

I'll go with Octavianus.

You are right about Alex! But don't forget, he didn't live long!

Julius, if they didn't kill him, maybe he should had been greater then Augustus!

Octavianus???

Augustus among the choices. Cyrus the Great, Akbar, Asoka, Elizabeth and Canute are all admirable in their own way.
