Judge for yourself!

Now, let's not draw too many conclusions from this. Dumb and uneducated people can be found anywhere in the world.

But this is damn funny anyway:

'reality' shows have a habit of picking, how shall we describe them, 'dense' individuals. jade goody still ranks near the top for me.
eg 'Do they speak Portuganese in Portugal? I thought Portugal was in Spain.'
unfortunately for jade, her looks do her no good at all...

Are Blonds Dumb?
That's the standing joke, but the FoxBabes put that lie to rest post haste.
Are Americans Poorly Educated?
More so than we were 30-50 years ago, yes. Compared to the rest of the western world, again probably yes overall. However, we do also have the cream of the crop as well.
Is France a Country?

Events like this will continue as long as we give preferential treatment to attractive people.

It's instinctive and hard to over-ride.

I find it mind boggling that people can be so stupid.

This isn't a national thing - American, or French - but just a human thing. Some people are just amazingly dumb. How can you really live with yourself being just so dumb? :crazyeye: I can't imagine it. People are just incomprehensible to me.

Ok, one dude losing his nerves and not knowing the obvious, is a rather normal thing in TV-shows. But the audience...., 56% thinks it is the sun, that turns around earth.... Nah.....

Otoh:
Could it be the grammar? Wording?

Why "Qu'est-ce qui gravite autour de la terre."
Why not: "Qu'est-ce qui tourne autour de la terre."

As a Dutchman, knowing a word or two in French, I could easily translate the sentence to:
What is it that attracts upon earth?

I find the phrase "graviter autour" quite confusing....

:) Please keep in mind I have a very limited knowledge of French, but my experience with Romance languages would suggest that "gravite autour de la terre" means "gravitates around the Earth". So clearly "what is moving around the earth due to the force of gravity of the Earth", not "what exercises attraction to the Earth". I think Dutch might have a slightly different wording for the same sentence, but to me it was obvious what the question was. :) Maybe we're both wrong though. :D

I also find the English sentence "What gravitates around the world" quite weird. I might transalte it as: What is a gravitating fource around the world.

If I am not familiar with the French word "autour", and accidentily translate it as upon, instead of around....

I want a French native speaker to solve this :) .

It's obvious the audience has been tricked by the verb "to gravitate". If the question had been "What turns around the earth", as told by the subtitles, the answers would have been widely different. It is not common in French to use the verb "to gravitate" in this context. As a result, I guess many people weren't sure if "gravitate around" meant "is attracted by" or "attracts". That's why the subtitle translation isn't fully honnest. But anyway, it makes the thing funnier. ;)

classical_hero
Dec 05, 2007, 06:30 AM
That is what I thought also. By using gravitates, rather than rotates or turns, it makes the question much tougher than it really needs to be.

Or maybe the audience thought he was an idiot and voted to screw him up.

In the French I know, "graviter" can mean to rotate or move in a circular pattern around any given object.

Marla_Singer
Dec 07, 2007, 03:58 PM
In the French I know, "graviter" can mean to rotate or move in a circular pattern around any given object. That's only undirectly true. Graviter in French means "being attracted by another object according to the law of gravity". If the moon turns around the earth, it's because it is attracted by the earth, hence it is a fully correct French usage to say that the moon "gravite" around the earth. However, this isn't the most common expression to describe the phenomenon. Generally, in French, we simply say that the moon "tourne" around the earth.

D0NIMATRIX
Dec 07, 2007, 08:05 PM
Obviously, "tourner autour de" is more common than "graviter autour de", but I could understand the context.
