The COTM43 First Spoiler thread is titled "COTM42 - First Spoiler".

Jan 10th going on 11th, and I have to realize I can't win this in time. I really love this game, totally awesome, and having to submit an incomplete game will hurt deeply. And it's not about me not putting enough time into it, it's that this game takes such immense amounts of time, dwarfing the dreaded GOTM 50 in comparison (which I managed to rush to a domination win in the final day). The, umm, 'special' logistical situation in this game means everything takes that much longer.

I realize it's a slim hope, but I have nothing to lose by putting it out there: any chance for an extension of the deadline? I realize that will encroach on the games that follow, but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make at least. There's no way any of those games could compare to this one anyway. :please:

Deadline extension would be very nice. There's only a handful of submissions so far.

I'm also trying hard but see no chance to win before deadline.
I'm not sure I can end it in time if we extend it but I'm sure I can't if we keep it.

End of january might be appropriate :groucho:

We won't get the results before march anyway, will we? ;)

I appreciate your sentiment and the effort you're putting into the game. However, I believe setting a maximum limit of 1 1/2 months, and only for the larger map sizes at high level, is about as far as we should go. As it is COTM43 has completely overlapped GOTM44 (which is the only reason I added a week to GOTM44).

What factors are impacting the length of time for your game? In-between turn delays as the AI moves thousands of units in a shuffle? Size of the map? Lack of personal playing time? Style of play? I do want players to have enough time to play the game, which is why I added 15 days and set this game to happen during the holidays.

Yes. One IBT, when actively warring against a nation and thus seeing his troops, takes >5 mins.
Size of the map?
Yes. But also add logistics to that. Transporting units by ship takes a lot of time, not just in-game time but also playing time.
Lack of personal playing time?
Not so much. I've spent hundreds of hours, literally, on this game.
Style of play?
Well, yes. I micro-manage my towns, checking each every turn. But I do that in every game, and compare to for instance COTM 42 that I finished in <5 days, with <20 active hours playtime. I had lots of towns there too. So this is not really what's taking time.

I do want players to have enough time to play the game, which is why I added 15 days and set this game to happen during the holidays.
And I appreciate it. I understand your position and didn't really think you would comply. I'll just have to finish the game in my own time then, and compare to the results of those who manage it in time.

Same for me, except for I have some more distraction by MPDG this time which adds to my thorough style of playing. :(

As Niklas I'll try to finish it one day just to compare. :mischief:

Another factor that delay was uncertancy of gpt rules. In December Steve advise me to delay with playing but I still did not get answer to my questions I posed in PMs and spoiler #2. As a result I decieded to use Lantzelot rules as in current SGOTM 13, but I am not sure, that it will be acceptable. Most time delay is IBT and military action, I gave up on Micromanagement now.

One thing that significantly speeds up war turns on SID is turning off "animate moves" and even "show moves"

Turning off "animate battles" speeds it up more, but is significantly more problematic, of course.

Yeah, I only realised too late that "animate moves" was redundant here; there's little chance of missing something significant when every move made by one AI unit gets repeated by about 100 of its friends. :)

Lack of personal playing time?
Of course, as every month. Addicionally, my 3 weeks holidays out home (I know, without CIV they are not holidays!)
Style of play?

Yes, other problem. I HAVE TO micromanage every town before hit enter!

I do want players to have enough time to play the game, which is why I added 15 days and set this game to happen during the holidays.

And I always appreciate each day you add!

It was a really good COTM, I enjoyed it a lot, my first Sid game with a good chance to win.
