I know this sounds like a lame question, but how do i fully uninstall Civ4? I tried to install the latest patch (1.74) and it couldn't fully install for some reason. It said "error 1706 no valid source found for product Sid Meier's Civilization 4."

Then when i tried to remove the program i got this message.

Error Code: -5004 : 0x80041f42
Error Information:
*C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\12\00\Int el32\iKernel.dll
>inc\CoCreate.cpp (44)
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1390)
PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4
PVENDOR:Firaxis Games (##IDS_PRODUCT_URL##)
PGUID:CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8
$11.0.0.28844
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) BT_OTHER 8.0

I tried deleting the actual game file folder, and the game folder in My Docs. I did a search for civ4 docs and deleted all that i could. It still won't let me install or uninstall Civ4, and i just got it last night. Sooooo aggravating as you can imagine. Any help would be wonderful, thank you.

Good news bad news, did a system restore andn installed the game. Worked great. Tried to install 1.74... same problem. Just did another system restore and am not going to install the update.

Is this a common problem?

welcome to cfc :)
no it is not a common problem. there are some reports in the microsoft knowledge database that would make me assume it has something to do with how your cd drive is working...

shdrmmr2 I'm having the same Exact problem. I was unable to get the damn game to work. I'd click on the icon and nothing would happen after it'd been running fine for a couple weeks.

So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall. I could uninstall Beyond the Sword and Warlords no problem. but I got the same EXACT error you did and it would not let me finish uninstalling. So I tried to physically remove the files.

So I tried reinstalling and it gives me the error, "The setup has detected that version 1.74.000 of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is already installed. This setup installs an earlier version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 (1.61). You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version."

so I'm stuck up the creek without a paddle here. I went through the registry and tried removing absolutely everything corresponding to Civ and still the same error. Ugh.. I really am frustrated by all this. Any help please? :(

Found that in another thread and I can now install Civ4 properly. You guys are the best :)

installshield folders are hidden by default you might want to enable show hidden files on your computer and look again :mischief:
Welcome to CFC :band:

You would think that the game would be naturally easy to uninstall, guess not. I had to do a system restore on my computer to get it to work, and i haven't installed any patches since. I'm thinking about switching out my CD rom drive and putting in a much new DVD drive, see if that works.

But yeah, only way i could fix it was system restore.

The following has worked for a number of other people:

To completely uninstall try and go through the normal uninstall process through Add/Remove in control panel.

Delete the "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games" folder (assuming that where you installed it), delete the "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4" folder if it is still there as well as the Warlords and Beyond the Sword folders.

Go into the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. If this is the only game you have from Firaxis delete the key called "Firaxis Games" otherwise delete any sub keys of Firaxis Games" starting with "Sid Meier's Civilization 4". Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and delete the following keys {4377F918-E6C9-4ECA-A7F5-754B310B7ED8}, {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}, {3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228} and {32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}.

Also delete the following folders if they exist:
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" - Vanilla
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" - Warlords
"C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" - BTS

NB. The InstallShield folder is hidden by default. You will need to configure Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

The instructions cover vanilla as well as the two expansions so some parts may not apply to your particular systems.
