View Full Version : ModDB MOTY Awards 2007
the_fish Dec 06, 2007, 03:06 PM UPDATE: Congratulations to the team for making it to the second round!
...but the team still need you to vote AGAIN in this round to make the top 5. Vote HERE (http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/top100), under the CivIV section.

I know you guys don't use ModDB to advertise this mod much*, but they do offer some pretty damn good prizes if you place highly in their 'Mod of the Year' competition.
I'd recommend updating* the FfH2 page, then submitting some news/screens about 'Shadow' - it's bound to get people's interest. And once this is done this entire forum can hop over there and vote for you guys.
In case you think this won't work or isn't worth the effort, I know ModDB is how I discovered this mod - there are a lot of people on there waiting to become addicted to this awesome game. They just need to be made aware of its existence. :)
[*this is assuming the team created the FfH2 page in the first place - it says the page was created by someone called 'AlterMann', who I've never heard of... If not, contact him/ModDB and take it over]
seZereth Dec 08, 2007, 05:41 AM I fully support this. I even once pmed altermann, he never responded. I hope Kael will get in contact with ModDB.
go FfH2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go civfanatics!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the_fish Dec 08, 2007, 07:12 AM Yeah, after I posted the above I looked into it further: he hasn't been on ModDB since January 2007 (probably too busy playing FfH :P), so contacting him seems unlikely.
The ideal time to commandeer and update the entry would be after Shadow is released, because then there's news and time to do it, but that might cripple your chances in the competition.
If everyone viewing this clicks this FfH2 link (http://www.moddb.com/mods/8602/fall-from-heaven-ii), there'll be a button where you can vote for FfH2 in the preliminary round, even though that page isn't run by the team.
If enough of us do it before the 20th, they'll make it to the next round. And then, after the Shadow updates, they'll kick serious ass and may win some of this (http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/prizes).
Rex rgis of Ter Dec 08, 2007, 02:59 PM Just Voted.:D
seZereth Dec 18, 2007, 03:21 PM thanks guys for all your interest!
If you want to support us, please vote for us at:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/8602/fall-from-heaven-ii
this time, no registration or anything, it just counts how many people wanted to say "thanks" to us.
If questions arise, have a look at this thread:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=253619
thanks guys for your support!!!!!!!
(by voting for us and by bumping this thread, you can make us work harder )
JDexter Dec 18, 2007, 04:02 PM *whip* Work harder! I already clicked a week ago or so. *whip*
;)
GoodGame Dec 18, 2007, 04:28 PM Just voted for FFH2!!
Shame so many of these mod sites require the whole raz-ma-taz registration and useless questionnaire thing.
White Elk Dec 18, 2007, 06:06 PM I voted for it a week or so ago. There is still no download or any new art posted.
Have they not responded to your requests to change 'ownership' of that thread?
vorshlumpf Dec 18, 2007, 06:33 PM Just voted for FFH2!!
Shame so many of these mod sites require the whole raz-ma-taz registration and useless questionnaire thing.
Really? I found registration to be quick and straight-forward for this site. Took me all of 30 seconds, including the time to retrieve the welcome email from Hotmail.
Bringa Dec 18, 2007, 08:28 PM Can't you contact the people who run ModDB and ask to be given control of that project?
wilboman Dec 19, 2007, 03:12 AM I voted. I suppose Kael is busy with other things ATM. Maybe you can do it, seZ?
seZereth Dec 19, 2007, 08:50 AM well, Kael sent them a message, but we only have 15 hours left.
every vote counts. thanks guys.
Kael Dec 19, 2007, 10:57 AM I've sent a few emails to their admin with no responce. Its kinda bad that someone else posted the mod as if they developed it (though im sure they were just trying to help out).
If I here back from the admin I'll post here, otherwise I dont know that there is much we can do. I probably should have started this process before yesterday (I know you guys were looking into it) but competing in contests is a pretty low priority for me (winning or losing an award doesnt make the mod any better, fixing bugs or adding features does).
the_fish Dec 19, 2007, 12:27 PM That's very altruistic of you Kael, but winning an award:
a) Increases the public awareness of the mod, so you can make more people happy with it, and
b) Gives you money/a new computer to develop said mod better (these were the prizes for last year, and they didnt make much sense for a team-based area such as modding...)
Admittedly "b" is a direct appeal at greed (and I should have known better) but "a" is still valid and important.
And more people playing = more people to spot bugs and give feedback on features. You know it makes sense. ;)
EDIT: In retrospect, being included in BtS was probably better promotion than this'll ever be. That is, if people realize there's another mod sitting behind Age of Ice.
Kael Dec 19, 2007, 01:37 PM I agree, and "a" is the only reason I would spend any time on contests. So its not that it isn't valuable, its just that it isn't the highest thing on my radar. Personally we could accomplish "a" much more directly by just having you guys tell your friends about the mod (which many of you already do).
To be very honest, I dont think there is a substantial quantity of players out looking for Civ4 mods that don't end up here already. Especially BtS players since we put the link to the FfH website on the main menu for AoI. In general every article or post about FfH draws some players in, but its not a significant amount. We got a pretty big boost from the IGN interview about AoI and the inclusion in BtS. Outside of that our best bet for spreading the mod is time spent making the mod better.
From a marketing standpoint we've saturated our market (anyone who plays civ4 mods has probably heard of FfH). The real market I would love to tap into are BtS owners who dont look for or download mods. This is the largest segment of potential gamers and they don't realize how good mods can be (not just FfH but the whole spectrum of good mods). These players don't go and look on moddb, they play bts and then they shelf it. I need to figure out ways to get at them. But its a puzzle the mod community for all games is trying to crack.
seZereth Dec 19, 2007, 02:22 PM the key to that would be publicity in field that reaches them. preferably magazines or online game websites.
So, anyone who knows someone working or having connections to one of the magazines / web news sites, draw their attention to our mod :)
seZereth Dec 20, 2007, 04:03 AM From the ModDB site:
Top 100 Mods and Indie Games of 2007 will not be announced on the 20th of December as originally planned but will instead be unveiled on the 22nd of December. We have decided to push back the date to include 48hours more voting due to a few reasons:
* A rule amendment which states any mod released in 2006 which has not released a significant new version in 2007 (and has made the top 100 before) will not be eligible to make the top 100 in 2007
* The voting is currently very tight from the 90 to 110 mark with only a handful of votes separating the competitors, so we felt an extra 48hours of voting may come in handy... especially when you consider the following:
* This years top 100 mods will be showcased on the AMD! Game website as well as Mod DB and considering this site sees 4 million gamers a month, this represents an amazing opportunity for the top 100 to reach a different big audience of people and companies beyond the Mod DB
As always good luck to all developers, modders we encourage you to make the most of the next few hours because you don't want to just miss out on making this years top 100!
vorshlumpf Dec 20, 2007, 12:27 PM FfH has gone up to #148 of 6,820 in just the last few days. We need more people to vote! Takes less than a minute to register, which is nothing compared to the hours and hours (and hours) of enjoyment you get from this mod.
White Elk Dec 20, 2007, 12:48 PM I had already voted but hadn't registered. Everytime I went back to the site it said I had already voted (had even cleared cookies once after pron surfing). But after reading vorshlumpf's latest post I decided I should register to make sure my vote actually counted. And sure enough I was able to vote again. Makes me wonder if my 'guest' vote would not have counted for much. So I encourage everyone to register and vote. This is one of the easiest sites to register at. It really took less than three minutes.

actually i could not vote again after registration, i think the guest votes are counted as usual.
so if you register, you can be sure it is counted, if you dont want to do that process, at least use you guest vote by simple clicking the vote button, thanks :)
White Elk Dec 20, 2007, 01:48 PM For me the graphic had changed. On the MOTY award next to the "You have Voted" box, a new red ribbon with the word "Voted" appeared. Prior to registering I only saw the "You have Voted" box.
White Elk Dec 20, 2007, 02:04 PM Still at #148 ~ We need to move up 48 more places in 34 hours in order to make it to phase 2. Pass the word! Good luck Team!! You've done the hard work of creating this grand Mod, now its up to us your fans to help you receive your due recognition so even more people can experiance the joy of FfH.
TheJopa Dec 20, 2007, 02:12 PM I just voted, I just hope that AlterMann will be contacted.
vorshlumpf Dec 20, 2007, 02:14 PM According to zxcvbnm (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6273449&postcount=11), guest votes only apply in the case of a tie. I can't find the contest rules, but that wouldn't surprise me.
As I said before, registering is quick and painless.
White Elk Dec 20, 2007, 02:17 PM Quick and painless and a registered vote is a for sure vote.
Why take a chance? Register and vote now!!
We're up to 140th now!!
Ball Lightning Dec 20, 2007, 02:20 PM I just voted for you guys, hope you get there!
TheJopa Dec 20, 2007, 02:35 PM Yeah, I registered as well. It's really quick.
Zeviz Dec 20, 2007, 07:10 PM It might help you get votes if Kael links to it from the first post of download threads. It would be amuzing if this mod came out of nowhere to get into top 100 in the last 4 days. :)
the_fish Dec 21, 2007, 09:19 AM How do you see the current standings? All I get is the stupid 'last 6 votes' scoreboard...
So in absence of that information, let's assume FfH2 is in 101st place AND THIS MEANS YOU NEED TO REGISTER (http://www.moddb.com/members/register) AND VOTE (http://www.moddb.com/mods/8602/fall-from-heaven-ii).
Please? C'mon, it's nearly Christmas.... ;)
GFGuy Dec 21, 2007, 10:26 AM I voted. Good luck guys!
GoodGame Dec 21, 2007, 11:01 AM The most logical way would be to get the mod shipped with CDROM magazine along with a review of it in the mag, or have Firaxis send a pop-up when anyone registers online.

Statistics -> Rank
We've slipped :(
White Elk Dec 21, 2007, 03:08 PM How do you see the current standings? All I get is the stupid 'last 6 votes' scoreboard...Scroll down to the last box on the right labeled "Statistics".
We're at 143 with just under 9 hours to go.
seZereth Dec 22, 2007, 05:58 AM WEEEEHAAAAA
we made it into top 100 :D
so everyone now the serious voting begins, give us a merry christmas and vote again for FFH! we need you, concurrence is not sleeping.
Help winning a new PC to Kael :)
We will give out some surprises if we make it into top 5!
vorshlumpf Dec 22, 2007, 06:08 AM Wow, I didn't think it would happen. Nice!
Make your votes count again, everyone!
the_fish Dec 22, 2007, 08:42 AM WOOOO!!!! :D I doubted it too, last I checked you were at #143. Must have been closer between entries than I thought.
Now you guys REALLY need to update that page. Hell, I could spend time doing it for you if you're all too busy (ModDB'd have to include me (temporarily) as a developer, but I guess I'm more so than Altermann. I mean, I almost got one of my units into Shadow :P)
smurven Dec 22, 2007, 09:01 AM voted, but it looks like I cant vote with a registered account since I already voted anonymously.
loki1232 Dec 22, 2007, 10:22 AM And here's a link for the voting:
http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/top100
White Elk Dec 22, 2007, 02:41 PM Holy Cow!!!! Last I checked with 5 hours to go we had slipped back down to 143 or something. Whohoosical! Congrats team!! You came from behind in a very large contest. Incredible, but not surprising being that FfH is what it is... brilliance and greatness. Very cool indeed!
White Elk Dec 22, 2007, 03:12 PM Man those guys really gotta allow you update that page now! You've even got a video which can be uploaded. In the absence of that it might be wise to provide a 'welcome to Erebus' thread for noobs which we can link to from ModDB. I've thought this was needed to help people learn about the mod while they purview the various mods here at CFC as well as provide a resource list for all things FfH. But now that we have access to potentially a few thousand more gamers interested in learning about FfH, perhaps the helpfulness/importance of such a thread justifies the effort?
TheJopa Dec 22, 2007, 04:28 PM I can't believe it!!! The contest went relatively unnoticed, we found it quite late, yet we won. Now I really think FfH has a good shot at winning a contest.
the_fish Dec 22, 2007, 04:42 PM Haha, I figured out what it was! FfH placed 143rd overall but that includes both released and unreleased mods, each of which have a top 100 (or at least a top 100 and a top 50).
Scraped, but with an 11 month old page written by a fan that's pretty good going.
To stand a chance in the next round ModDB need to get their act together and let the team have access to their page. I really hope that happens soon...else no-one'll vote for it but us again, and that's not enough :(
seZereth Dec 23, 2007, 05:18 PM good news, i emailed modDB and we received an answer :
First off congratulations on making the top 100, your mod is amazing and i'm certain will do well in the awards. I can transfer profile control to yourself or Kael [...]
It will certainly be great to see the profile majorly updated as it is seriously lacking information at the moment.
Regards,
Scott Reismanis
http://www.moddb.com
so, hopefully we can sort the page really fast and get enough people to vote.
thanks to those who already voted!
TheJopa Dec 24, 2007, 07:51 AM Yeah, I noticed KaelFfH is now creator :) Anyway, we're rank 50 or so, a nice advancement but: vote!
seZereth Dec 24, 2007, 07:55 AM also now that we can upload screenshots, please feel free to post some screenies here, which show the atmosphere and diversity of FfH !! ( some from the game in an advanced state would be awesome, guys!!!!)
the_fish Dec 24, 2007, 09:23 AM Rank 45 now...keeps on rising :)
Glad to hear you've got control now! I'd get some screenies for you but I can't until tomorrow (giving my brother BtS for Christmas...heheh). The new images from the art thread look good though :D
Kael Dec 24, 2007, 10:32 AM I went through and updated the profile. Just gotta figure out how to add a download and we should be all set.
seZereth Dec 24, 2007, 12:01 PM I went through and updated the profile. Just gotta figure out how to add a download and we should be all set.
click on download and then on: upload relevant file ;)
vorshlumpf Dec 24, 2007, 05:03 PM Gogogogo! Vote people!
Farmer Bobathan Dec 24, 2007, 06:55 PM I voted. Good luck:goodjob: i hope this mod wins!!!
seZereth Dec 26, 2007, 08:36 AM dont stop voting :)
tell it all your friends ;)
Tssha Dec 26, 2007, 05:42 PM I'd like to congratulate you folks on not only making it to the top 100, but also for being the only Civ IV mod to do so. Though this says a few things about the state of Civ IV modding, it does emphasize the quality of this mod. No other mod is as polished, complete, nor changes as much about Civ IV as Fall from Heaven. And having your own fantasy world doesn't hurt either. ;) It's dark, it's creepy, and some people want to take up residence there. I won't comment on the wisdom of such decisions, but at least I can empathize. :mischief:
...and yes, I voted for FfH again. Why bother asking? :p If this does pay off and you guys get in the top 5, it might be yet another comment on the state of Civ IV modding. Basically, that it's coming into its own, and that Civ IV is an engine for people that want to create. Wouldn't it be nice if a side benefit of FfH getting into the top 5 is a flurry of new mods?
Of course, most people have heard of Civ IV and know what Civ gameplay feels like, but maybe it'll convince a few people on the fence to take a look. It may even draw back some people who looked at Civ IV and decided "heck no". I know BtS changed more than a few things about Modding. Maybe they'll decide to give it another chance...
the_fish Dec 28, 2007, 10:29 AM ruh roh, 117th!
(BUMP)
Three days of voting to go!
seZereth Dec 28, 2007, 02:35 PM I am still waiting for some good advertising screenshots :)
furthermore, maybe we can draw some other non ffh players to vote, just post in this thread :)
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=255803
cheers, and thanks :)
the_fish Jan 02, 2008, 10:29 AM 13 hours to go, final bump.
And take heart, team...if you hadn't worked it out before (I hadn't), the 'rank' on the site is based solely on the number of unique visitors the FfH page has had in the last 24 hours, NOT on votes (these are still secret).
Need I say any more? If you haven't yet voted, click on the link in seZ's sig above.
(PS: sorry about no Shadow screens, haven't managed to play it yet. And my brother's still playing vanilla BtS, the poor fool...)
vorshlumpf Jan 02, 2008, 10:04 PM And take heart, team...if you hadn't worked it out before (I hadn't), the 'rank' on the site is based solely on the number of unique visitors the FfH page has had in the last 24 hours, NOT on votes (these are still secret).
That's good to know. I was a bit dejected when the ranking went from 42 to 160 a week ago.
