Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but i read somewhere that there is a file that u can download which allows unlimited colonies, or something like that... can someone give me the link to this?

You should search for a file which allows a great number of civilizations, I think there are some on these boards

Yes, it's not the number of colonies that's the issue, it's the number of civs that are allowed in a game at any one time. The default limit is 18 civs in a game but there are mods that raise that.
