View Full Version : This normal for prince?
Artifex1 Dec 08, 2007, 10:54 PM Usually play noble, first game on prince tonight and this is new to me.
I'm playing roosevelt. It isnt even AD yet when bourdica declares war and shows up with 8 gallic warriors out of nowhere..she is across the map from me and we are friendly with each other (we also share same religion). She came across jao and gilgimesh to get to me. This is the most agressive move I have ever seen especially from an empire far away from me that is supposedly friendly.
Oh well...guess things are different on prince.
This never happened on noble.
ggganz Dec 08, 2007, 11:52 PM :wow: O_O :dubious: That's pretty darn aggressive. :faint:
JujuLautre Dec 09, 2007, 02:50 AM perhaps your military is too weak? Or she is pissed off with you? Or worse, a combination of both?
Julian Delphiki Dec 09, 2007, 04:01 AM At least Boudica, Shaka & Monty are willing to cross the whole continent early to bash human player, even if they would have more juicy targets next to them.
sylvanllewelyn Dec 09, 2007, 04:43 AM They don't bash human players specifically. If you're new to BTS, a rule of thumb for minimum defense is 3 units per city. Anything less and you'll be declared upon by aggressive AI's. Of course, whether you can counter 8 gallic warriors or not really depends on what time it happened. I doubt it's before 1000BC though, something that early can only be pulled off by a human player. I trust you have the capability to build axeman? 3 axeman and 2 archers in a city, with bonuses, should be able to fend them off. After they lose some units, ask for peace and move on. I wish I could tell you it's easy, but it's not though: swordsmen and their +1 strength mean a lot.
I really, really wish Julius would show up in the BC era with 8 legions. That would deserve a screenshot.
IDave Dec 09, 2007, 05:30 AM Have you built any juicy wonders? Did you found the religion you share and have the holy shrine with weak defence? These could be the reason for the attack. And also coz boudica is in the crazy club.
Supr49er Dec 09, 2007, 10:10 AM Boudica is tough, tough, tough!
keshik22 Dec 09, 2007, 10:30 AM I am guessing you were dead last in the power rating. AI at this level often pays more attention to the size of your military than to how good your relationship is. And yes, it will sometimes cross the entire continent.
Merkinball Dec 09, 2007, 10:43 AM I agree.
I've done about 12 games on Prince now, and I really haven't seen the irrationality that I saw on Noble because I've been playing more defensive, staying up on the powergraph and whatnot so as to not have to worry about getting dogpiled.
So long as I keep my military numbers up, I don't have any problem on Prince, and on the whole, I've been having less problems than what I did on Noble.
cryogenics Dec 09, 2007, 10:52 AM Try being in the middle of a continent on a map such as Pangea and being bordered on either side by salivating enemies wanting your cities and territory - then you got problems! I'm playing a similar game where Brennus and Saladin are my neighbours, lucky though I have Totem Pole happy North American archers to ease the pain - not to mention Dog Soliders to whip into play.
Artifex1: You might want to start considering the slavery civic at your level of play. I find the need to whip up armies more of a necessity on levels such as Prince and higher.

kristopherb Dec 09, 2007, 10:56 AM Thanks for this thread i'm looking to move up to prince.
SimonL Dec 09, 2007, 11:08 AM A bit unrelated but I have to vent here. I'm new to the Noble difficulty level, I already lost a game, now I thought I was doing well on a continents map. Okay, my country (Bismarck) is is the largest on the continent. My neighbours were Toku and Hammurabi, two aggressive nations, I teamed up with Hammu in trying to destroy a bit of Toku and it sort of worked. I control Tokyo and Osaka now... But my caravel reached the other continent to see who my other opponents are. It found Shaka, Boudica and Ragnar. So why is the random choice giving me Hammurabi, Tokugawa, Shaka, Boudica and Ragnar as opponents when I'm just starting on the Noble level? All are aggressive! At least no Monty. There was another leader: DARIUS. Why? "Ok ok, enough toying with the poor guy, let's give him at least one non-aggressive civilization, DARIUS, the leader with one of the most awesome trait combination in the game, neat". Thanks for making my Noble learning experience easy, game!

According to the "peace probability" chart, Boudica will never make a decision to go to war with a human that has relations of "pleased" or better. However, the decision can take place many turns before the declaration. Considering that she had to travel the whole continent to reach you, she probably made that decision a long time ago (when your relations were "cautious" or worse). If you can somehow sue for peace in a few turns, she shouldn't be a problem again if her attitude stays better than cautious. As far as I am aware, all AI's noble and above have a -1 attitude modifier towards the human. It can seem that they are less fair at the higher levels, but that is only because you are likely to be relatively weaker in relation to them, and they see you as a soft target.

Hm, I seem to remember the word "Friendly" in there somwhere.

It probably is weak military, the decision to go to war can be many turns before the declaration. It doesn't matter if the attitude changes to friendly in the mean time. The decision has been made.
