View Full Version : [BTS] The Island of Cuba for Verietas Delectat
bernie14 Dec 09, 2007, 01:22 AM OK, here is the Cuban CIVILIZATON, "the Island of Cuba".... VERSION2
DOWNLOAD (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7787)
fixes:
1) crash associated with entering industrial age (THANKS ARMA)
2) adds"game face" buttons to leaders(THANKS DWOLF)
3) buffs up STATS for Club Tropicana, now, (-)10% war weariness, can turn 1 citizen into artist AND +5% GOLD (THANKS IMPALER)
LEADERS: Jose Marti (philosophical/organized) favorite civ: Representation
Fidel Castro (aggressive/charismatic) favorite civ: Police State
Unique Building: The Club Tropicana (replaces colosseum) all the benefits, PLUS -5% war weariness and can turn one citizen into an artist.
Unique Unit: the Mambise (replaces cavalry) all the benefits, PLUS starts with mobility promotion.
Game Text and Stratagies, as well as some diplo text for fidel (HE,HE).
In additon to unique unit, there are also FLAVOR UNITS, a taino indian archer, a colorful musketman, a revolutionary infantryman, a mambise machinegunner and a modern cuban marine fit for jungle warfare. Other units are mostly carthagenian/spanish, with a few natives early on.
INSTALL: THIS MODULE WAS MADE USING VERIETAS DELECTAT, I am not sure if it will work as a "stand-alone" mod, but should be easy enough to convert (for someone who actually knows what he/she is doing :crazyeye: )
TO INSTALL AS IS, YOU NEED VD ;)....just unzip or place the "Cuba" folder inside the Beyond the Sword\Mods\Varietas Delectat\Assets\MODULES (the same folder u put the Hungary Civ into)

The whole thing looks really authentic even though I'm not into Cuba much, but it's great.
Edit: The machinegunners are especially awesome!
troytheface Dec 09, 2007, 06:59 AM yes, nice job. And you got 4 stars. Nice overall graphic scheme.

bonafide11 Dec 21, 2007, 12:55 AM Castro's favorite civic is Police State and his traits are Charismatic/Aggressive? Give me a break! Favorite civic clearly should be State Property... What is Castro going to do with increased military production? Cuba hasn't exactly invaded anyone over Castro's 50 years...
bernie14 Dec 22, 2007, 12:03 PM Castro's favorite civic is Police State and his traits are Charismatic/Aggressive? Give me a break! Favorite civic clearly should be State Property... What is Castro going to do with increased military production? Cuba hasn't exactly invaded anyone over Castro's 50 years...
first, if u don't like the settings, there are one and a half million very simple explanations on this site that should help u to changes them to YOUR preferances....secondly, in cuba, thier is no "state" property, unless u r fidel...everything belongs to fidel....cuban citizens are not allowed to stay in the hotels, hospitals or beaches, unless they are serving the tourists...it is a police state, finally and with all due respect, i think u r missing the point of the game....fidel has not "invaded" anyone "in reality" because he has been kept in very good check (do u remember some little thing involving missles a couple of decades ago???). the point (in my humble opinion) of this game is to take some leader's natual abilities/tendencies, with some very general small advantage (each civs unique stuff) and see what u can do with it....castro NOT aggressive/charismatic???? have u ever heard one of his 6 hour speeches??? give ME a break
caribou Dec 22, 2007, 02:51 PM I don't want to start a political discussion, but the same things could be said about Jose Marti. Non-white Cubans were not allowed in hotels and beaches etc if they weren't serving tourists i.e. white people. But its true he can just change it if he doesn't like it. Good job with the civ looks great.

if u r going to write things down, at least do a little research....jose marti was an abolishionist, he HATED slavery, u could have learned that from a simple web search.....and if u recall, blacks were not allowed on MIAMI BEACH either at that time ;) , i can assure u the races got along MUCH better in cuba than they did (or to this day do) even here in the US...
but u are right, castro's descrimination doe not have color in mind....OH, unless it's the color GREEN (money), then he loves u, in fact, more than his own people....
bonafide11 Dec 28, 2007, 10:58 PM first, if u don't like the settings, there are one and a half million very simple explanations on this site that should help u to changes them to YOUR preferances....secondly, in cuba, thier is no "state" property, unless u r fidel...everything belongs to fidel....cuban citizens are not allowed to stay in the hotels, hospitals or beaches, unless they are serving the tourists...it is a police state, finally and with all due respect, i think u r missing the point of the game....fidel has not "invaded" anyone "in reality" because he has been kept in very good check (do u remember some little thing involving missles a couple of decades ago???). the point (in my humble opinion) of this game is to take some leader's natual abilities/tendencies, with some very general small advantage (each civs unique stuff) and see what u can do with it....castro NOT aggressive/charismatic???? have u ever heard one of his 6 hour speeches??? give ME a break
Not going to bother responding to all of these, but according to your definitions of "state property" and "police state," then Mao and Stalin also should have their favorite civic as "police state" instead of "state property." Police State clearly fits their regimes quite well, but because of their ideology, Civ made their favorite civics State Property. Ideologically, Fidel is much closer to them than police state.
Impaler[WrG] Dec 30, 2007, 02:01 PM The -5% WW on the Club is too small to be of any benefit and should be replaced with a bonus that is more appropriate for a resort, like +5 gold or something of that sort.
lad777 Jan 04, 2008, 07:14 PM does this work on civ 4
Chuggi Jan 05, 2008, 03:29 AM No surprisingly, it's made for Civ 2.
Amra Jan 05, 2008, 07:02 AM He may have meant Vanilla Civ4 (without BtS) in which case the answer would be no, it requires the Beyond the Sword expansion.
lad777 Jan 05, 2008, 06:10 PM :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
so what civ can i install then or they they alll require bts
snipperrabbit!! Jan 06, 2008, 08:33 AM You can alter vanilla xml to use the graphics bernie made.
Bahmo Jan 06, 2008, 04:16 PM Citizens were restricted under Marti? I think you mean Batista, the Dictator who came before Fidel.
As to Castro's favorite civic, it's up in the air. Certainly from an economical perspective, State Property could work, but Environmentalism may not be a bad choice either, since Cuba is mainly an agricultural state. For the more social aspect, either Police State or Nationhood could work, but Police State in Civ4 is a somewhat limited definition.
In the first case, Police State does not mean the same as Dictatorship. A Police State is one under martial law, which often suspends Civil Liberties, but it is not necessarily a state without a republican government, or a lifelong dictator. Democracies can become police states during times of War. In terms of a lifelong, absolute dictator, the player is always one in Civ4, no matter what Civic he employs. With that in mind, the Police State Civic in Civ4 is more in line with Martial Law employed during wartime, considering what effects it gives. Representing a totalitarian government is more convenient through a combination of Civics, such as Slavery, Theocracy and Nationhood, but Despotism and Hereditary Rule can accomodate a tyrant just as much as Police State does.
As to Cuban citizens being forbidden from staying in Cuban hotels, that is a misinterpretation of the truth. Cuba has two types of hotels, the type intended to serve its own citizens, and the type intended to serve foreigners from wealthier economies, helping to bring money into Cuba. These resort hotels may be barred from normal Cubans, but even if they weren't, normal Cubans could not afford them, because they are priced with foreign, Industrialized economies in mind. This is not a stupid law, it is a clever way to help bring money into a country, very good money by Cuban standards, and has helped Cuba to recover from the economic crash following the USSR's collapse. Its economy is still weak, but the tourist sector is helping to change that.
Edit: Not working on my VD. What is wrong? The mod has modular loading by default, but something's amiss.
Aeven Jan 08, 2008, 01:30 PM It crashed in my game :(
bernie14 Jan 08, 2008, 09:13 PM It crashed in my game :(
sorry to hear that....
i'm not the best with XML stuff, but just make sure the "cuba" folder is IN \Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Varietas Delectat\Assets\Modules....
i have not played a full game with it, but tested all the units/LHs/building in worldbuilder without a problem....
HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD A PROBLEM?????
Aeven Jan 09, 2008, 12:26 PM I found the problem. For some reason you decided everything must be loaded from the modules folder. The standard is the Modules/Custom Civilizations.

yeah, i created it based on/mirroring Avain's Hungary mod for VD....
Bahmo Jan 09, 2008, 02:51 PM I have gotten this to work, but it always crashes when Cuba enters the industrial era. Hopefully that helps.

Check the Unit ArtStyles. There is an error with the Musketman entry in regards to the "LateArtDefineTag". It has an extra "_" at the end.
See the code below. I've bolded the error.

Hope that helps a little.

Holy Cow! i dont think i would have ever found that!....
so far, i have changed a couple of buttons (THANKS to DWOLF), buffed up the stats on the Tropicana (THANKS Impaler) and now i will fix this...still gonna do a little more testing before i release V2 with fixes, but want to thank those that have contributed...:) :goodjob: :)
Amra Jan 16, 2008, 05:30 PM Holy Cow! i dont think i would have ever found that!....I only found it when doing a complete double check of ALL the civ's Unit Art Styles against the Unit Art Defs in my modpack, a somewhat time consuming task that I'm glad I did. :crazyeye:
GOBLES Jan 16, 2008, 07:30 PM amazing, I've been gone for a while and I come back and now there is all sort of goodies.
Great work man.
Fred Zeppelin Jan 19, 2008, 10:27 AM This looks good.

it seems that is what was causing the crash....i will post an update very soon, thanks again :)
bernie14 Jan 19, 2008, 11:13 AM ok, the patch is UP...
refer to TOP OF THREAD for download and details....
GOBLES Jan 19, 2008, 01:05 PM I was just about to post that my game crashed with this mod but I see that there's a patch already, great!
mackan95 Feb 13, 2008, 02:36 PM Does this work for Warlords? oh and i have a mac
bernie14 Feb 13, 2008, 08:49 PM i dont think it will work on warlords without modifications to the xml files...also no idea if it will work with mac at all :(
Bahmo Feb 14, 2008, 09:55 PM As a final modification, you might want to change the Civ's full name to "Cuban Empire", since in most games it won't actually start on an island.
NikNaks Feb 15, 2008, 05:39 AM When I was converting this to the WoC I changed that. It's something you should consider, Bernie, as all the other civs go by that format.
jkp1187 Apr 03, 2008, 08:59 AM Can someone please re-upload this? Thanks.
bernie14 Apr 11, 2008, 11:58 PM Can someone please re-upload this? Thanks.

snipperrabbit!! Apr 12, 2008, 03:27 AM Fine ! Do you come back to the business ?
NikNaks Apr 12, 2008, 05:25 AM Yay! You're back!
bernie14 Apr 12, 2008, 12:07 PM Yay! You're back!

Good home improving! I know how tiring that can be!
And be back as soon as you can!;)
SomeMan Apr 12, 2008, 01:21 PM With that in mind, the Police State Civic in Civ4 is more in line with Martial Law employed during wartime, considering what effects it gives.
That means in my games, I'm ALWAYS in Martial Law, seeing that after I get pyramids I stick with Police state for most of the game (On and Off wars with people who are my allie one day then rival the next >.>)
on Topic: I haven't checked it out yet, what Version and can I get Screenshots?
Shekwan May 03, 2008, 09:10 PM Is there any way to get this working as a standalone mod? I really want to see what your Fidel and Marti look like. Also it'd be great to see Cuba becoming Colonies of the southern european civs instead of America!

sorry..not very good with XMLs and paths and stuff....3 options....1) use it with VD (works fine).... 2) pretty sure this civ is included in CIV GOLD!! 4.0.... 3) if u know how to load "modular civs", it should not be too hard to rewrite the XMLs/paths...:)
Shekwan May 04, 2008, 09:51 AM Yeah I think I'll just use the mod it in myslef using the art and xml thats in the download. All I want really is th UU, UB and the Leaderheads/Flags and stuff. I'll probably change the civilopedia entry too, it's a bit too biased for my taste.
KrugerPritz May 04, 2008, 11:14 AM 1) crash associated with entering industrial age (THANKS ARMA) What was the error? cause often happens to me that my game crashes and I don't know why, if it could be a wrong unit or a wrong civilization...

there was an error in the musketman "MiddleArtDefineTag" entry in "Civ4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos", an extra _ at the end, so if u had any musketmen in the game when entering the industrial period.....>CRASH ! Arma was the one who found the error!!
bernie14 May 04, 2008, 12:51 PM I'll probably change the civilopedia entry too, it's a bit too biased for my taste.
yeah, well the truth hurts sometimes..... a woman visits "el che", to plead for her son's life....."please, he is only 17, he is my only son.....i cannot bare the pain of his unjust imprisonment"..... (to the woman)..."what is your son's name....(to the guard)....have that one shot in the head right now, i would not want his mother to suffer any longer"

Arma was the one who found the error!! Ok. it's the kind of error that often crashes my games too... :( Do you know if there's a any debugger to find these errors... cause i play with a lot of civs, and then when it crashes it's terrible to search !!! :crazyeye:

no i dont, sorry....i am more an art guy....i copied avain's Hungary civ to make Cuba cuz i like to play with VD :D, but i make many XML errors!
avain May 05, 2008, 06:08 AM Just to let you know, bernie, there are some minor changes in VD xml files describing units for civs - mainly some units now need 3 (different or same) ART_DEF added, e.g. like the Swordmen, Spearmen, etc.

is that for 3.6 or upcoming 3.7  (still finishing game with 3.3)
BTW...exactly which file/files will need changing?
avain May 06, 2008, 12:51 PM It's already in 3.6.
Look for the CIV4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos.xml files.
You'll find stuff like this:

QUESTION: does the CIV4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos.xml need to change for every civ, even if u dont have 3 distinct figures?
avain May 07, 2008, 04:14 AM QUESTION: does the CIV4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos.xml need to change for every civ, even if u dont have 3 distinct figures?
ANSWER: Yes. ;) (it's a pain in the you know where, but it's coming from unit definitions). If you don't do that, you'll get your changed graphics as one figure and the vanilla ones for the other 2.

got it!! THANKS :)
Jimmyballz Jul 13, 2008, 10:48 AM Great civ!! :D:goodjob:

DWOLF Jul 17, 2008, 11:46 PM hey the music fits along nicely Jimmy...I'm sorry bernie, but I couldn't wait so I added the music on my end :)
avain Jul 21, 2008, 03:26 AM bernie, I hope you don't mind, but I added a link to your great Island of Cuba in the download section of VD! (sorry I didn't do it sooner!)

a great big THANKS!!!...:D i plan to update it soon, but i dont have access to my computer right now (just been doing some little reskining on my laptop)...the new version will have many more flavor "what-ifs", like these caribbean types....aside from more units, i reworked fidel's xml and will be including Jimmyballz's diplo music file...i hope to be able to do this within 2 weeks, but that is what the construction guys always say... "2 weeks"
Chuggi Jul 21, 2008, 08:39 AM They look very cool bernie! :D I like the stripey trousers. :p
