Giant Earth Map (GEM)
How the map looks:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=169360&d=1203006943
Updates of the coming release (26/05/2008)
1940AD scenario is now completed!
200BC scenario is now roughly 40% completed.
It is taking a lot longer than I was expected, but I hope the quality is what worth the wait.
Updates of the coming release (29/04/2008)
Because of the amount of changes, the next release will be called "Version 5.0". At this stage , it will include the following:
1) Minor map modifications for better balancing.
2) Unit ability modifications. As mentioned before, units in general can move faster and the special units of each civ will be more special.
3) New scenarios: 200BC and 1940AD.
It is hard to estimate when will I be able to finish all these changes. As the amount of stuff to include in this release are increasing, the previously promised release date, early May, will not be true.
Version 4.2 (Released on 14/02/2008)
Version 4.2 improved the landscape of Canada, USA and Australia with some minor changes in resource placement.
This version is also bundled with the 1500AD scenario on GEM. For discussion and comments on the scenario, please goto:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=261542
Version 4.1.1 (Released on 21/01/2008)
Fixed some 'floodplain issues'. There should be no tiles starting with more than 4 breads in this version. Nothing else has changed.
Version 4.1 (Released on 29/12/2007)
Version 4.1 included some improvements over version 4.0. There are two major improvements:
1) To have better game-play balance, I have added floodplains and resources to some of the civilizations starting locations. These civs include: Maya, Aztec, Inca, Arabia, Mongol, Ethiopia, Persia and India. (See the attached xls for more details).
2) I have added many islands to the map, which were initially too small (<1000km2) to be represented. However, a lot of small islands have important meanings in human history. I decided to include them in this revision. These islands include: Malta, Ionian Islands, Hong Kong, Outer Hebrides, Zanzibar, Iwo Jima, Midway, Netherland Antilles, Cayman Islands, etc. (See the attached map for more details).
Version 4.0 (Released on 09/12/2007)
Version 4.0 is developed based on v2.2, the 'perfect version', instead of v3.1, the compressed version. This is due to the fact that in the latest patch of Civ4 BTS, the crash to desktop problem is said to be fixed and hence there is now good reason to reuse the bigger but less distorted map instead.
Besides updating the map for BTS starting with 36 civs, v4 also enhances the map in many ways. There were previously some areas on the map which I felt wasn't drawn as good as it could be. These include France, Spain, Romania, Poland, Morocco, USA East coast, Brazilian south east coast and indo-china peninsula. There are many changes in resource placement (For details of these changes, please refer to the change log of v4.) Another major change is the removal of all the floodplains on grasslands or plains. The map should now be as plain as it could be without any differences to the normal maps.

The downloads
The download for BTS:

The download for Warlords:

The download for Civ4 vanilla:

Download Instruction
Download the zip file and extract it to the following path:
"My Documents\My Game\Beyond the Sword\MODS\"
or
"C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\"
After you placed the folder in the above path, start your game normally. Then click "Advanced" in the menu, click "Load a mod" and select "Giant Earth Map”. The game will restart but with the mod this time. Then go to "Single player", "Play a scenario" and pick a map that you like.
WARNING: the map is Giant in size and it will strain your PC. RAM seems to be particularly important. I won't try this map on a PC with less than 1G of RAM. In the usual case, this would mean waiting for ages to load between each turn; in the worst case, your game would be quited without saving because it is running out of ram.
Lastly, please come back and put a rating and drop a comment. If commenting, please try to be precise and constructive so that I know exactly what you want it to be.
Background story
The first version of the Giant Earth Map took me on average two hours per day for half a year to develop it. Without using any map generators, I first drawn layout of the continents to the ratio that I felt most balanced. This gives me the flexibility to upscale the size of any interested region on the map. Then I adjusted/fine tuned the map, for every tile, so that the map looks realistic even in the local scale – something which usually cannot be achieved by map generators. It took me about 3 months to have a map ready for me to fill in resources.
Another great feature of GEM is that it references real statistic of resources for resource placements. This allowed the map to be less 'biased' towards any regions. However, the time needed to search for the correct statistic for each resource, scale the source into the number of icons on the map, correctly draw the border on the tiff map and lastly placing the sources on the civ map with the correct amount and correct locations was unexpectedly long. It took me another 3 months, almost the same amount of time for drawing the entire map.
After the first version, I received much feedback from this forum and have updated the GEM accordingly. The map you now downloading have been commented, reviewed, tested and balanced. I hope you will enjoy it.

2) Minor changes in resource placement. (See the attached xls for more details).
3) Bundled with the 1500AD scenario on GEM.
Version 4.1.1 Change log
Fixed some 'floodplain issues'. There should be no tiles starting with more than 4 breads in this version. Nothing else has changed.
Version 4.1 Change log
1) Floodplains and resources were added to some of the civilizations starting locations. These civs include: Maya, Aztec, Inca, Arabia, Mongol, Ethiopia, Persia and India. (See the attached xls for more details).
2) Many new islands are added to the map. These islands include: Malta, Ionian Islands, Hong Kong, Outer Hebrides, Zanzibar, Iwo Jima, Midway, Netherland Antilles, Cayman Islands, etc. (See the attached map for more details)
Version 4.0 Change log
1) Developed base on v2.2.
2) Used the new CvGameCoreDLL.dll for 40 Civ BTS developed by Mikel Olson in the civ fanatics’ forum.
3) Resource changes – refer to the excel file.
4) Modified Southern French coast by shifting Spain one tile south west. Spain and morocco are modified because of this change.
5) Eastern Europe is modified. Slightly increased the size of Romania and Hungary and decreased the size of Germany and Poland.
6) Increased the size of East Coast USA.
7) Increased the size of Indochina Peninsula.
8) Removed all floodplains on grasslands and plains. Floodplains can now exist on desert tiles.
9) Using the new civs and new leaders in BTS, 36 civs are placed on the map. China and India both have an extra civ to fill in the area.
10) All civs started with Noble difficulties.
Version 3.1 Change log
1) Moved the entire Americas back down 3 tiles.
2) Shorten Argentina and Chile by about 2 tiles.
3) Reshaped eastern coastline of South America.
4) Reshaped western coastline of Africa.
5) Moved Iceland 1 tile back up.
6) Moved Cape Verde closer to Africa by 1 tile.
7) Added Azores back on the map.
Version 3.0 Change log
This version cut down the map size to 200x80. It includes the following:
1) Moved Iceland 1 tiles down
2) Moved New Zealand 2 tiles up
3) The entire Americas 3 tiles up
4) Chopped out about 7 tiles from the Arctic Circle and 3 tiles from the Southern Ocean.
5) Chopped out 5 columns in the Pacific, about where Alaska is.
6) Chopped out 5 columns in the Atlantic.
7) Some changes in the landscape of north eastern Brazilian coast.
8) Some changes in the landscape of Alaska coast.
9) Some changes in the landscape of the north eastern Canadian coast.
Version 2.2 Change log
1) Redraw the Oceans. I have to admit that the secret pathways in the middle of the oceans isn't as fun/useful as I was intending. Since it is also unrealistic, so I decided to remove them. Instead, I have increased the width of the coast, minimum of 2 tiles away from the land - decreasing the chance of sea routes being blocked by enemy coastal city's influence.
2) Added a few more islands in the south pacific and Caribbean. Especially south pacific islands, including Tonga and Niue which are required for my 1200AD scenario.
3) Added some resources (1 fish, 1 crab, 1 clam, 1 banana and 1 whale together with the existing 1 sugar, 1 gold and 1 marble) around those islands giving a bit of possibility for the Tongan Empire to grow (although still little in comparison.)
4) Added text labels for all the islands on the map. I got frustrated when I was modifying the pacific islands and keep mixing up with which island is which. So I decided to add in labels which I think will help everyone else too.
Version 2.1 Change log
Used the new CvGameCoreDLL.dll which is compatible with warlord v2.08 from Rhye's Earth24 mod.

Bug fixes:
1) Max number of turn was 460. This line is deleted.

mamba Dec 09, 2007, 01:39 PM I'll definitely give this a try :)
EDIT: are you sure on the 210x90 size ? It has the same size as the XXL world in XXL Worlds (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=183746) (40x25) in the CIV4WorldInfo.xml definition. Which should be 160x100.

You are correct about the size defined in the Civ4WorldInfo.xml. But that only affects the size of a 'Giant map' if you generating a random map. The size of the 'Giant Earth Map' is defined within the CivBeyondSwordWBSave file.
Wessel V1 Dec 10, 2007, 08:55 AM Are you sure about the floodplains in the Netherlands? I know it is crowded here, but it is definitely no desert. No other comments here, it is amazing:)

Having the highest population density, I thought giving extra food for Netherlands is appropriate. I know it is odd, but the only way to give extra food is to make it as desert and put floodplains on it.
tommybabs Dec 10, 2007, 10:14 AM I hate to be picky, but where is the coal in South Wales?
ho1 Dec 11, 2007, 03:18 AM What is civ "Yue"??
Is this Cantonese??
Genghis_Kai Dec 11, 2007, 06:23 AM Yue people:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yue_%28peoples%29
In ancient time, Yue is used to refer to the people in southern China. Southern China contains hundreds of different tribes in ancient time. I have used "Bai Yue" as the long name, which means "A hundred Yue" boardly referring to all the southern tribes.
Cantonese could be considered as one of the Yues but assimilated into Han Chinese culture.
Genghis_Kai Dec 11, 2007, 06:28 AM I hate to be picky, but where is the coal in South Wales?
There is already one coal in England. There are only limited number of tiles and we can't represent everything on the map.

Grit Dec 12, 2007, 04:43 PM Hey Genghis I downloaded it according to your instructions but when I load the mod your map is not there what should I do:cry: :help:
Ok I can get to the map now but it crashes at the leader select spot what do I do to fix it?
Grit Dec 12, 2007, 04:53 PM by the way what is the identifier for?
Genghis_Kai Dec 12, 2007, 08:09 PM Ok I can get to the map now but it crashes at the leader select spot what do I do to fix it?
My friend, if you want someone to help you to debug, you need to at least tell us more details about your computer, what you have installed, what you have done and what is the symptom. I don't think anyone could help you if you simply say, 'it is crashed, what should i do?'.
Grit Dec 12, 2007, 08:40 PM Sorry:blush: I guess I got a little excited!
But I have a Dell Latitude D620 with more than enough ram and harddisck space.
Now I installed the mod just like you said in your instructions and everything was fine.
Next I go to "play a scenario" and press on GEM and the computer process...
...Here is where the crash happens once it has finished processing it comes to the leader select menu and then crashes leaving me with this message-
"Runtime Error!
Program:...er's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Now all other mods and scenarios are running fine and do not give me this message when I load them only GEM.
Do I not have enough RAM am I missing components or what I am very eager to start this game!
I hope I've clarrified my problem if not tell me oh and thank very much for your time and help:D

OK. For anyone who have already patch 3.13 BTS and got GEM mod loaded but can't see the map, check this:
open the file Giant Earth Map\PublicMaps\GiantEarthMap v4.08.CivBeyondSwordWBSave in wordPad.
Check in line 7: ModPath=
It should be blank after the = sign. if it has anything, delete it.
Thats the only thing i could think of.
Genghis_Kai Dec 18, 2007, 06:46 AM Ill ask it again... Multiplayer compatible? Yes or no.
Yes. It should. But it is always problematic when playing MP with mod.

OMG then I will play it!!! Yes, I know about the problems, very frustrating! But your map is soooooo cool I have to give it a try! :)

Sepulchre Dec 19, 2007, 01:51 PM Doesn't work
Im running on Vista 32, with 2Gb ram, 2.8 Duo Core, with BTS 3.13 Patch.
The mod loads but then crashes at the leader selection screen.
JDR Dec 19, 2007, 05:49 PM Great map, thanks for the work.
One thing:
I think you should add Horses in Carthage's BFC, as they are needed for the UU. The only horse resource currently in North Africa are in Thebe's BFC.

There should be one horse in Morocco area (as indicated in my spreadsheet). I might have accidentally deleted when I change the landscape around there. I will check that tonight. Thanks for reporting.

Have you got 'Giant Earth Map' displayed on the top right? Have you checked what I said in post 29?
Genghis_Kai Dec 20, 2007, 12:22 AM I am playing the map myself lately. As usual for any major updates, there is always need to made adjustments after released. I've realized there are some civilizations have rather bad starting location. I am considering making some adjustments to those civs. If you have any comments, please let me know.
The civs I think that really needs some help are:
Maya, Inca, Arabia and Mongol
The civs that are relatively poor:
Aztec, India, Germany, Hungary
It can never be truly balanced. But I shall try to make the differences lesser.

Yes I have exactly the same problem as 3 other people in the thread, I am running 3.13 and when I get to the Leader Select Screen I get a runtime error.
I have tried redownloading and reinstalling, I have looked in the Wordpad details. Nothing is working.
Its such a shame because it looks like a friggin awesome map.

LordRequiem Dec 22, 2007, 06:38 PM Thank you for an awesome map.
I have one pretty major issue.
Playing this on BTS (latest version) a machine with 2gb RAM, 2.3 Ghz cpu and a nvdia GeForce 8500 GT...It runs extremely slow..and I mean 15+ seconds delay each turn. When another civ communicates with me, the game locks for about 10 seconds before I can continue communicating with them.
It's a real shame but at this speed its unplayable for me.
Any help appreciated.

Loading speed is always a problem for Giant maps. But my computer have about the same spec as yours and I think it doesn't take as long as 10sec for loading the civ communication dialog box, at least in the first 200 turns.
May be tune down your graphics quality and see if that helps. It is after all a tradeoff.

ossmobilus Dec 27, 2007, 05:38 PM Hey, I really want to try your map. Looks amazing, but I can't seem load it properly.
I have tried to place the mod in both the 'programfile\...\mods' folder, where it doesn't even appear in game (strange), and the 'my documents' folder where it appears on the load mod list, but I get these error messages and I don't understand them. I also find it really weird that my game reacts this way, when noone elses does.
Hope someone got any ideas:) I have the 3.13 patch installed...

kevinman4404 Dec 31, 2007, 03:17 PM I am, like the others, having a leader selection error. I think I have tried past maps of yours and they worked. This is the BTS one. I am on Win XP and I'm not sure what patch I have for BTS, if any.
The folder was moved into mods, the mod was loaded, and after selecting the map, right before the leaders would normally appear I get a runtime error.
Again, if its simple, then I think there must be a problem with the file, or perhaps somethings not on our computer (runtime?).
What did you do for the new civs' artwork and leaderheads? Because I don't see any artfiles.
UPDATE: I looked at the map file, and the new civs aren't in there! I put the map in publicmaps (I checked that it didn't restrict itself to your mod) knowing that it didn't require data for the new civs (cuz there arent any), so this time I load without the mod using the one in publicmaps and it says cannot read map at the same spot. It should be able to be read without any new civs or mod associations.
Any idea?

Firstly, you might need to find out whether you are patched with 3.13. I think that makes a difference.
GEM doesn't do anything to the artwork and leaderheads. The most important mod is the use of the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file to allow having 40 civs on the map. You won't be able to read the map without loading GEM.
The rest of the mod are just XML modifications which shouldn't cause problems.
Bastian-Bux Jan 01, 2008, 04:06 AM Actually you can use the map with other mods that have the 40 civs dll. ;) Though other things in those mods might prevent that.
kevinman4404 Jan 01, 2008, 01:56 PM A correction on my previous statement... There are a full 36 civs, however, none of them are the new ones ie Israel, Brazil, etc., theyre the ones supplied with vanilla, warlords and bts.
Is this right?

Yes. It is correct. I wasn't intended to add any new civs. I needed to change some of the starting location of the original civs as they were too crowded, hence the rename to Brazil, Israel etc.
The Almighty dF Jan 01, 2008, 10:21 PM Is there a way for users to switch out leaders?
Like in my case, I prefer playing as Lincoln. (Washington's trait combo... is very weak.)
Titus001 Jan 02, 2008, 12:07 AM This is the best map ever...... but I have a question.
Why is it when I select Giant earth map 40 set civs and select the Byzantines my capital is Budapest? I know I can edit the name but i'm just wondering. Can you play online with this map?
Again thanks for this great map....
Bastian-Bux Jan 02, 2008, 04:40 AM Because Genghis has adapted several Civs to the places they have to go due to strategic reasons. So frex the Byzantines could surely have gone to Byzanz ... but its strategically more sensible to change them into the "Hungarian kingdom". Same goes about HRE, which effectively was changed into the "Polish (Lithuanian) kingdom". And so on. Try playing Portugal (now better described as Brazilian Empire).
Genghis made some concessions to strategy.

I downloaded within hours of you posting v4.0 (I got first post :D). I opened the WB file with a text editor and noticed MaxTurns = 500.
JerryvonKramer Jan 02, 2008, 09:21 PM I am having trouble getting GEM to work.
I put the file into the Mod folder as specified but in 'Play a Scenario' the map doesn't appear! I tried copying the private map into the public map folder but then it just fails to read the map.
Has anyone else had this happen or am I doing something wrong. I'm patched to 3.13 using BTS.

Have you tried both paths that I specified?
JerryvonKramer Jan 02, 2008, 09:39 PM Yes Genghis. The problem is that the map itself is not appearing in the scenario list.
The only way I've managed to open it thus far is by manually putting it in the Public Maps folder and loading the 40Civs mod.
For some reason, GEM itself brings up an error when I try to open the map that way.
What is the map actually called in the scenario list? When I add it manually it's called "Giant Earth Mapv4.1" (or whatever) is that what it is meant to come up as?
I'd prefer to play the mod as it was intended rather than through the 40Civ work-around.
Looks awesome. I just went France to take a look around Europe - the attention to detail is astonishing - hats off to you there mate!
FlashAron Jan 03, 2008, 10:00 AM Hi Ghengis,
someone at the "World of Civ" Mod told me you have a compatible map for their project. Any chance that I could download it ? I am connected with SVN Update, but your Map didn't show up !
Thank you for your great map ... by the way, last game I played with your mod, suddenly a Computer player won, with a cultural victory, even he was double behind me, compared with "cultural score" ? Anything related to your mod or a civ problem ? Even I loaded a save game, where I had 10 turns left, before he is declared winner, I nuked him to death and killed most of his cities ... he still declared as winner ?
Anyway ... was an intresting game with a strange end
and thank you for your WORK
Thanks

I heard of "World of Civ" but know nothing about it.
The computer won by cultural victory sounds strange. I don't think it is related to my mod thought.

You will need to open the map file in GEM mod as the map file uses a new map type called "Giant".
Have you double the folder structure? Whether the map file (yes, is called Giant Earth Map v4.1) is in the public map folder of GEM?
JerryvonKramer Jan 04, 2008, 06:22 AM That's the problem Ghengis - it's just not there. And when I try to open it through GEM it just gives a 'failed to read' message. Not sure what the problem is - seems to be to do with the changes the mod makes rather than the map itself.
I'm playing through as the English using the 40Civ mod (plus additions from other mods), no problems thus far, just reached the Medieval Era.
I will say this though - England has great resources. Using slavery, with a population of 9 or 10, London can build stuff and then grow back to 9 or 10 in a couple of turns. Crazy.
PimpyMicPimp Jan 04, 2008, 01:32 PM I like the map, my only issue is that it seems to have all the problems that Bhruics patch adresses. The problem is, when I try a DLL transplant, the mod doesn't work anymore. Any advice or are you planning on making one with a newer DLL?
I know this thread must be drowning you with complaints and suggestions, but it's all out of love :)

thank you for your answer. So as I couldn't locate the WoC Earth Map, I was looking for a Map Editor ... so if it is allowed, I would like to include the missing resources into your Ver. 4.1 ... if it is allowed,
could you please tell me which "Program" you use to edit the map ?
, couldn't find any fitting in the utility forum and where I could download it.
Thank you

If that really is the case, try doing the reverse; copy the dll file from 40Civ mod and replace the dll file in GEM.
The map is possible to run in plain 40 civ mod, the differences are 1) the game would not be adjusted to the giant size. I think it will treat the map as 'standard' by default because mapsize = Giant is not recognized. That would quite affect the game play balance. 2) The city names would not be appropriate, especially those civs that have changed, such as Byzantine -> Hungary, HRE -> Poland.

I used two tools in addtion to the in game map editor 1) Civ4editor 2) MapView. These tools are available from the utilities program forum in civfanatics.
However, these tools are designed for Civ4 vanilla maps.

I think there is some other DLL for 40civs that might be compatible with Bhruics. You might try to replace it with the one in GEM.
I am glad to see that so far there are mostly technical complaints for version 4. It means everyone is happy with the map itself ;) Think back in version 1 of GEM, there were tons of constructive and 'destructive' comments about the map which were much harder to deal with.

I'll come right out and say it Ghenghis: your map is BETTER than Rhye's - I'd now rank it as the definitive Earth map for Civ4.
I've tried your suggestion, still no luck. This is what happens:

gimmeadog Jan 06, 2008, 12:27 AM oh wow im blown away by this great looking map
the east coast and widwest of the US looks like it could use some work still, but im just being nitpicky ( i know youve prob got a reason for making it the way it is)
what can i say? i know my computer will be able to take this- but god i wish it could- it looks amazing
ossmobilus Jan 06, 2008, 04:52 AM I can load the map now, but I can't really play it since it's too big, but that's ok.
just wanted you to now that what ever you did with the new version (4.1), it solved my problem:)
JEELEN Jan 06, 2008, 11:27 AM I've noticed before that playing with 20+ civs or so (whatever the map) makes the game quite slow. Wouldn't it help to play with civs you don't want in or think uninteresting turned off (as in "Custom Scenario")?
JEELEN Jan 06, 2008, 11:44 AM Another thing: I've frequently noticed that when unzipping a mod, a folder "[whatever mod]" is created + inside this folder another one entitled "[whatever mod]". That's one too many. I usually rename the top folder "[Xwhatever mod]", then copy the "[whatever mod]" in the original "Mods" list. (The "[Xwhatever mod]" can end up in the Dustbin.) Maybe this helps?
JEELEN Jan 07, 2008, 01:44 AM  I've DLed- the map, but on starting it I got that "Failure to load/find...WBS" message... so I'm off to my 1000 BC for BTS conversion.
deathr0w Jan 08, 2008, 07:54 AM Well, I started a new game with 4.1 and so far I'm really enjoying it. Playing as the Japanese for the extra challenge (prince level), I've made it all the way to the industrial age and the interturn takes about 1 minute or so, though it was expected :(
Anyway, there is one annoying 'bug' that has to do with these 40 civ mods: you can't view the top players in the list to the right, you can only view roughly the bottom ~25 players. Also, even though that list gives you each player's score and ranking, when you go to the graph screen you can only view the scores/rankings of the players against which you've got some spy points accumulated. Is there a remedy for this?
harkovadm Jan 08, 2008, 02:25 PM is there any way to edit this mod so that I can turn off tech trading?
by the way this is much better than any of the scenarios that come with the game :P
oh and also I am a bit confused about the resources: why is there no oil at baku either on land or in the caspian, and no iron or fur in northern sweden or finland? Finally shouldn't there be oil in northern alaska near the anwr? ;)

This is a problem for people playing at normal resolution. I am ok because I am playing at 1680 * 1050 resolution so I can see all 36 civs on the right.
I also notice that the graph doesn't display all the civs which I don't know why.
All of these issues are beyond my knowledge. You need to speak with those modders that creates the 36 civs mod to find remedies.
popej Jan 12, 2008, 07:32 AM One thing I've noticed despite starting the game in Marathon is the tech times are quite a lot shorter than a vanilla custom game. Unless I'm imagining it?
Masonry for example only takes 27 turns rather than the usual 33. I'm not working any gold producing squares more than usual either.
Ta.
silentounce Jan 12, 2008, 03:18 PM Next I go to "play a scenario" and press on GEM and the computer process...
...Here is where the crash happens once it has finished processing it comes to the leader select menu and then crashes leaving me with this message-
"Runtime Error!
I'm having this exact same problem and I don't believe a solution has ever been posted here. It appears that others have this issue as well. I'm running XP (SP2) and have plenty of HD space. Only a 1g processor and I don't have that much RAM ~.5g, but others with the same problem have plenty, so I doubt it's related to that. (I'm also planning on upgrading the RAM in the near future anyway) I think they may have been running Vista, so it seems to effect different OS versions. Yes, I loaded the mod first, it says GEM in the top right.
Poster #28 had this problem as did #32 Sepulchre. I did what you said in #29 even though I have version 4.1 not 4.08 of your map. There is nothing after "ModPath=" in line seven. However, I noticed that "GiantWorldMap v4.1" is located in Giant Earth Map\PrivateMaps not Giant Earth Map\PublicMaps as you mentioned earlier. I doubt that is the cause because we can choose the map but crash when we get to the leader select screen.
Sepulchre came back later in #54 and said installing it in the My Games directory fixed his problem. I tried that as well and it still crashes. Sepulchre, did you do anything else different?
#61 also had this issue. As soon as I finish this post I'm going to copy the map file into a new PublicMaps folder within the Giant Earth Map directory because the download didn't include such a folder. I just downloaded a few hours ago btw.
Heh, I hope I've been thorough enough. :crazyeye:
EDIT: I just checked again and I don't have 3.13 installed, could have sworn that I did. So, I'll post back to let you all know if it was the problem. I have a feeling it was, and I have a feeling that the other people with the same issue probably thought they had 3.13, too. Goes to show you that it doesn't hurt to actually go and check.
EDIT2: Just tried it with bhruic's patch, same error. will now attempt with the official patch instead.
EDIT3: Well, that wasn't the problem. I get the same error using either version of the 3.13 patch. C'est la vi. Anybody have any other ideas?
EDIT4: Ok, got it to work, well, at least I got the leader choice screen to load. I didn't go any further because I don't have time to play right now and I wanted to comment here. For anyone who was having the same problem tis is what I did: uninstalled/reinstalled BTS, downloaded the 3.13 patch separately (you can find a link on these forums) and then installed it.
popej Jan 12, 2008, 06:25 PM A version of this with say 18 civs would be nice. Tried editing some civs out on my own but it kept crashing with illegal operations. It's a fantastic map the pace is just a bit too slow even on my mid-high end pc (AMD X2 Black Ed. 6400+ at 3.4GHz, 4GB GeIL Ultra RAM & a 8800 GTS 640MB on XP SP2).
DMOC Jan 12, 2008, 07:28 PM One word: EXCELLENT! :goodjob:
From the moment I started, I was quite blown away. I was Egypt, with what seemed like the best start in history.
But then, reality struck and I saw Ethiopia's floodplain tundras and I decided that I needed to try a different, easier civ to make my quest for world domination viable.
So I chose...ROME! The capital is quite nice, though I don't know why stone and marble are SO abundant in Europe (is that the way it is in real life)? I started out by killing Germany, then the Netherlands, then Spain, then France, and I am now onto killing the Hungarian empire.
I don't know how I was able to tech so fast in this game. I mean, I did use a lot of cottages and it was on noble difficulty (wayy to easy for me) but still, Liberalism in ~300 AD without beelining (I have almost every tech up to Liberalism). I was also quite astonished at what little resistance AIs put up to me. Isabella, in 600 BC, had two cities, each guarded by ONE 2-strength warriors!!! :crazyeye: :crazyeye: And the Oracle as well! Why Spain didn't expand into their availabe area is madness to me. Well, not really since I got 2 free cities.
Here is a screenshot if anyone wants to see it:
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/952/giantearthscreenshotofrto1.jpg
Once again, I love this map (looked in worldbuilder to see the whole thing) and I will probably play it to the end, as domination. My computer has 4GB of ram or something so it should be ok. With 31 civs still alive, I may soon not be able to see the entire score chart, so what you said about changing resolutions...that would work, I guess? If not I'll have to kill off people.
It's also weird that Pericles defends his 3 cities with 2 archers each in 270 AD while Cyrus defends his with 4 Longbows each (well soon because he upgraded them later). Did you by any chance change AI building patterns? I mean, warriors in 600AD?!?

Ta.
I found a small bug. The WBS file currently still define the map as HUGE, not the custom size GIANT. This is the cause of why technologies seems going faster than it should.
Basically, if you have more cities, technology would research quicker, defining the map to GIANT should slow down the average contribution to technologies per city and as a whole gives the research pace back to normal.
I will fix that and upload it again. If you don't want to download the mod again, all you need to do is:
Goto the file "PrivateMaps\GiantEarthMap v4.1.CivBeyondSwordWBSave" search for "world size=WORLDSIZE_HUGE" and change it to "world size=WORLDSIZE_GIANT" then save.

Thanks for the report. It seems that a "clean" install with patch 3.13 is the way. I believe it is all to do with the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file from 40Civ mod that I've used. I haven't installed bhruic's patch as well. May be it does not support it?

I haven't touch the AI, so no reason why the AI would behave different to the standard games.

Blue_Lines Jan 17, 2008, 04:49 PM Hey Genghis Kai, first off, great map, I was just wondering if it would be easy to cut off the Americas from the map to improve game speed. If so, could you tell me how to do it, or point me to a link? Thanks
Bastian-Bux Jan 18, 2008, 07:28 AM Blue, I'm not Genghis, but here you go. The packet that I attached includes:
- one clean GEM (units and teamreveal deleted, so when you change a civs start coords, its place its truly changed)
- old world (americas chopped off, 126x90)
- eurafrica (everything eastwards of the Ural chopped off, 61x90)
Currently I'm trying to get a europe map working, though cutting on the y gradient is a bit tricky.
JEELEN Jan 19, 2008, 07:39 AM Just (finally!) tried out the Dutch on the 33civmap; looking great!:)

I didn't try the 36civmap. I know the map has whale; it should have clam (+ 1 cow, not 2 pig). We don't (and didn't) do a lot of whalefishing on our coast; a lot of other fish though.
Sending you warm greetings from Holland,;)
timmeh Jan 19, 2008, 02:15 PM Really lovely map, works flawlessy for me. It's the only mod which still keeps me playing civ4. Thanks!
Blue_Lines Jan 20, 2008, 05:13 PM Thanks for cutting it down for me Bastian-Bux. I started an immortal marathon game with the Romans and I too noticed the research going very fast. I had Liberalism before 200 B.C.! I am crushing pretty much everybody, grenadiers and cannons vs. longbows is pretty fun.

Genghis_Kai Jan 21, 2008, 08:19 AM I would like to report Flood Plains on coast water tile near Dutch
Thanks:goodjob: I have found and removed some more flood plains on plains/grassland. I also change those tundra flood plains to becomes hill tarrain, such that each tile only has 4 breads.
So after the changes, the maximum number of breads is 4 on an unworked tile. If any one see any more 5 bread tiles, please report it!
I will release a minor revision soon.
MusX Jan 21, 2008, 08:26 AM IMO pigs on flood plains aren't fair, there should be no resources on flood plains, but it's just my opinion...
there is also oasis on hills tundra in alpes

play the warlords (24 civs) or vanilla version (18 civs).
Marmoteo Jan 24, 2008, 07:31 PM Hey Genghis, awesome map! Glad to play it again on BTS. Really nice and neat. The only thing is that I believe ships should get extra movement bonuses. With such a big map it takes ages to cross the ocean, even on modern times.
Do you plan on adding any events? Or even better... making a scenario using the map? :D

DMOC Jan 25, 2008, 01:08 PM Well, the game finally crashed for me. 1440 AD, researching Mass Media, have posession of pretty much all europe and africa.
Genghis, have you experienced a case when your interface suddenly disappeared? That's what happened to me. Soon, the game crashed, but I had to play a few minutes without an interface, and the F-1 etc screens didn't show up.
Is 4 RAM strong enough for this map?

Marmoteo Jan 26, 2008, 09:45 PM I'm originally from Mexico, and we have heaps of mountainous terrain, a lot of them with snowy peaks and so.
Atlantis145 Jan 27, 2008, 04:53 PM Hey all,
The GEM mod isn't working for me, it is in my C:/Program Files/2K Games/ Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Warlords/MODS (or something like that ;) )
When I go to load the mod, it restarts Civ, then Giant Earth Map appears in the top right. However, when I go to Play A Scenario, the map isn't there.
I'm thinking it has something to do with my versions and the game itself. I'm running on the Civilization 1.61 Patch, and tried to install the Warlords 2.08, then I got the error message:
"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 - Warlords is installed.
The update requires that a previous version of the application be installed"
After some research, I found that it might be my game itself. I recieved the retail version of Civ 4 as a holiday present, "Civilization IV Gold Edition" which comes bundled with Warlords. I read that it comes with version 2.13.
Would this cause issues with the mod? And is there anything else I can try, or download to solve my problem? (Because this mod looks pretty cool :) )
Thanks

Yes. If you are playing the warlord version of GEM, I think I used the 2.08 patch only, so 2.13 is probably going to cause problem.
Nitro_2985 Jan 27, 2008, 11:07 PM Is there someway to get this mod working with the World of Civilization mod?
Since it's basically a project to create some standards out of which individual users can mix and match their own modules, if this could be worked into there, the possibilities would be nearly endless.

Honestly, I am not into modding. I like playing with different maps and different scenarios but with the standard game rules.
However, if anyone willing to invest time to convert GEM for other mod uses, I am happy to see that happen.
Bastian-Bux Jan 29, 2008, 03:13 AM Genghis, I'll see what I can do, if time allows.
frekk Jan 31, 2008, 02:52 PM I'm afraid to try this map because of all the comments about how much juice it needs.
Is this map signifigantly slower than the 192 x 120 Earth map? It seems it shouldn't be because there are alot fewer tiles. Is the land percentage much higher?
I run the 192x120 a bit slow, but OK, all the way to the modern age. I have only 768MB ram and a Sempron 2600 ... but I'm also running win2k which is signifigantly less of a hog than xp or vista, and I kill all unnecessary processes (anti-virus, internet stuff, print spooler, firewall .. the works) with a batch file for offline play.
Also: Eastern Canada is really messed up!! Tundra doesn't extend anywhere near that far south!! You have Cape Breton Island and the Gaspe Peninsula as tundra, and the whole north bank of the St. Lawrence down nearly to Lake Ontario! Practically the whole of Quebec - a province with a population about as high as California - is tundra! The site of Montreal, a major North American urban area (in the top 100 globally, including Asia), is tundra!
Cape Breton Island isn't particularly fertile, but it's a warmer climate than, say, Scotland. The Gaspe Peninsula isn't particularly cold, it looks like this:
http://hiddentrails.com/canada/images/pq-chch5.jpg
Prince Edward Island is also tundra on your map, when in fact it is very very green and has a very pleasant climate. It gets much less snow than New York, for instance. This is PEI:
http://www.atlanticcanadacycling.com/p/clinton.jpg
The whole of the St. Lawrence from its mouth should be grass or plain on both banks.
The whole Gulf of St. Lawrence was the first area of major European settlement in numbers in North America, especially Nova Scotia and Newfoundland - New England's population only began to exceed it in the early 18th century.

But check my spelling;)
kevinman4404 Feb 01, 2008, 11:43 PM In response to the last post, I would just like to say that when I edit anything below the main game details, often I end up with a crashing map. I then have to go to my backup map.
This may be just me, but a little variation in the things I do gets it back up and running with the changes.
In summary, back up your map file just in case, so you don't have to redownload it.

Well, i have change several leaders and no crashing yet.
Maybe you do something wrong? If you spell name wrong or you don't spell it with capital letters, it's crash game.
And thanks to you Genghis_Kai for making new "scenarios" to GEM. Will try 1500AD immediatly, when i finish my game with Zara Yaqob.
And one more. Just read in 1500AD topic that 1500AD is made for marathon speed. Is this map made specially to some speed?
DodgyDave Feb 02, 2008, 10:13 AM thanks for the info on how to change the leaders :)
SHADOW-XIII Feb 02, 2008, 02:19 PM I would like to thank you for GEM map, I love it !
Imagine I play it on laptop with Vista and 1GB ram :P ... sometimes loading savegame takes 20minutes :P masochistic

Yep, i'm in year 1650AD or something and it's take me about 4-5 minutes between turns. But i watch TV or movie, or play guitar same time ;)
And this is really good map. I was bored to Civ, but then i found this map and now i can't stop playing it :)
kevinman4404 Feb 02, 2008, 06:23 PM Well, I'm sure those times I never spelled it wrong, etc. It just seems to me to be very picky on when itll work and when itll be permanently damaged.
And I'm kind of surprised at all the draggy performance a lot of you are having. I have 1 gig ram, normal cpu and a really bad graphics card, and on maps the size of this one (gem wont work for me yet) I only get load times of about 1 minute in late game. Maybe 2 minutes to load my giant map (250x160) and nothing's really laggy. Weird.
frekk Feb 03, 2008, 12:20 PM I can play the 192x120 with just 768M ram. Modern age it gets to about 2 mins for the computer turn to finish and things are a little laggy, but not too bad.
I think the reason things are slow for alot of people with much more ram etc is that they might have too much stuff running in the background when they play, too many processes and services going. For gaming, I shut everything down that isn't necessary to playing, including an array of services (printspooler, tcp/ip services, etc etc) that aren't necessary just for that. Which OS also makes a difference. Normally my Ram usage with nothing open drops from 44% to about 18% when I do this.
DodgyDave Feb 04, 2008, 07:04 AM ok as russia its going ok now, but thats more because my first 4 great leaders have all been Priests, so i now have two religions with their respected main buildings, earning me tons of cash :)
but got an event to build libraries, but it says i have to make 36 of them, 36??? even with how well i am doing now, i am at 14, 22 more will break my empire i am sure of it and the sheer time it will take ot make this many cities anyway, i am not sure the event will be around, when i finally have 36 lol
so is something wrong, as i dont recall a huge map demanding even 18!
MusX Feb 04, 2008, 09:47 AM yeah, some quests on that map are even funny... for example quest to build 72 religious buildings. anyone complete it? what was the reward? :)
and game could and even should be a bit more balanced.
did you tried to play Ragnar? he need some bonus resources! doesn't matter how much you'll try the only way for him is fast attack his neighbors. He has very low production (low production -> low culture -> low food), you must build axe's from start and attack as soon as possible.
some other nations could be balanced too, but for now I didn't play to many of them so it's hard for me to say which one should be.
DodgyDave Feb 04, 2008, 11:35 AM well for russia, i think main problem lies with poor income and production, you need to cut forest to do anything for a while and income you need to add cottages, but both vikings and russia, should have more furs and Deer perhaps to boost them.
I have not played Vikings, but as russia, found them too poor to setup many cities, so hard to get much russian territory, but i tried, 7 cities later and research was at 20% :) so that failed!
But as dutch, i managed to both invade and take out Vikings and have what 7 or 8 cities, still high on research, due to better territory.
from the varies nations, i still wonder why Deer and Fur is so few especially in the north parts, i would think scandinavia, russia and canada would have quite a few of those, afterall was alot of fur trading going on back in the old days.

Do you think this is to do with the parameters I've set for giant map in the worldinfo.xml?
simplex Feb 09, 2008, 06:39 AM hello,
i would like to remove some of the civs to increase the performance.
so, could anybody tell me how to do that?
DCMage Feb 12, 2008, 04:42 AM Hello, First off I'd like to say this map is probably one of the best Earth maps I have seen so far.
I have played it upto about 110BC so far, The 'Lag' Time for everyone to take thier turns early on was a few secs, now its 15-30secs. To me thats a bit excesive considering that not everyone is upto speed yet. Im guessing late on in the game its going be 5+ mins, to me thats a tad high. Tried the map with Full and Min graphics, cant say that theres much of a differance. Tis a shame real, cause well i like this map alot :-)
Comp Specs:-
2 Gig Dual Channel DDR2 577mhz Ram
Dual GeForce 6600 GT's 128mb (only thing lacking on my comp, but theres 2)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+
Windows XP on a 160g Sata Drive
Civ is ona diff 120g Sata Drive
Have Minimum Processes running while playing Civ. Looking at the processes and currently Civ4 is eating up 865,504k of memory and hardly any CPU, during the end turn phase this can jump up to about 1157,000k of memory(its been lower its been a tad higher) and the CPU usage upto about 48% (which is fine).
Kanute Feb 13, 2008, 02:21 PM Thanks for sharing your detailed map with us. Its been a lot of fun playing and discovering what great care you've taken in setting up the geography, etc. It will take me a while to really evaluate all the play positions. I only wish the turns would go faster on my computer after about 1000 AD. Best...
Genghis_Kai Feb 14, 2008, 10:46 AM Version 4.2 is released!
I hope our Canadian and American friends will be happier with this update :D
kevinman4404 Feb 14, 2008, 02:29 PM Indeed, Ontario is looking a lot more liveable :) nice work
I'll let you know soon if the new version works with me, if not ill do the clean reinstall
Kevin
DMOC Feb 14, 2008, 03:16 PM I probably should have asked this before downloading and saving, but..I was in the middle of my Julius Caesar game and it was a lot of fun (Version 4.1 to be exact). I am currently almost done with my spaceship in 1600 and I wanted to know that if I have 4.2, can I still play with that old savegame?
Thanks. I wish I could...I probably could get a score of 1 million on that game and I'd like to finally finish it...I hope....

I don't know how strict civ4 is related to modding so I suggest you finish out your game before upgrading GEM to v4.2.
CyberS Feb 15, 2008, 09:32 AM Fantastic map ! I just would like to delete some civs and to add some others (Byzantium), how can I do this ?
Can I do this with the World Builder ?
cheers
MusX Feb 15, 2008, 12:20 PM CyberS, try notepad
kevinman4404 Feb 15, 2008, 02:33 PM and try the tutorials. I wouldn't be surprised if there are several on this topic, and all describe it well
kevinman4404 Feb 15, 2008, 02:48 PM Genghis, I have done a complete reinstall of vanilla/war/bts, and am using the official patch this time around. The problem is still there. It appears the person who did the clean install just got lucky. This applies to both 4.1 and 4.2.
I'll let you know if I find out anything
Kevin
kevinman4404 Feb 16, 2008, 01:16 PM Genghis, I think I'm close to solving this!!
It appears it is not the fault of my computer (at least not much), and that the people who got it working really did get lucky.
Well, I was feeling very logical today, and I figured, if it crashes at civ selection, then shouldn't there be a problem with the civs?
So I went on the map and in the civilizations xml, and deleted all but America and Arabia. And now the civ selection works.
So this means the problem is one of two things:
1) There is a discrepancy or compatability issue or just plain something wrong with at least one civ, between the xml and the map.. or another possibility there are one too many civs, despite the spec. of the dll
or most likely
2) Your +Civs dll is not working on all computers. Could you link me to the specific one you used?
Kevin
bjarkekr Feb 17, 2008, 04:09 AM I just downloaded the new version yesterday, and it seems the game ends prematurely :(
I played marathon and im in 545 AD now, and it says 91 turns left..
bjarkekr Feb 17, 2008, 04:12 AM Tried opening the WB file as one did in a previous posting and this has gotten in the file again: MaxTurns=500
Can I just delete that part of it and there will be no turn limit?? Or what should I set it to?
SimonB1er Feb 17, 2008, 06:49 PM I have a Pentium 4/3ghz, 1gb ram and a geforce 6600gt. Will I be able to run this? Any advice to help me improve performance?
Thanks
SHADOW-XIII Feb 18, 2008, 08:07 AM it will run but due to small amount of ram:
- limit any extra graphics/animation etc
- loading map at the beginning can take even 10 minutes+
- loading map in later stages (after year 0) can take even 30 minutes
seriously jump to computer store for extra 1-2 GB ram, I would do that but got a laptop and it's not so easy (and cheap)
Sir_Lagalot Feb 18, 2008, 09:12 PM Having the highest population density, I thought giving extra food for Netherlands is appropriate. I know it is odd, but the only way to give extra food is to make it as desert and put floodplains on it.
hee hee you can make "Grassland" floodplains you know. Something I learned early on, all that needs to be done is to make it desert, make it a floodplain, then convert the place back to grassland, it becomes a "grass floodplain"
kevinman4404 Feb 18, 2008, 10:56 PM lol hate to burst your bubble, but you can just place floodplains over grassland.
Anyways he chose desert because he needs exactly 4 food on the tile. Grasslands would be 6 I think. He just wanted one more food than normal (3).

Thats right indeed. In GEM v1.0 - v3.1, I had floodplain on grassland and plains. It was however giving too much bonus to those area. Some people have commented that makes the game too focused in growing the cities without any alternatives. As I don't want GEM to be a mod but just a plain map, I decided to follow the standard, i.e. floodplains only on desert.

cool! great news :D
i have some question, is it hard to cut of part of from your map and export to new one? there could be lots of nice map exported from yours, for many scenarios and mods
akjone02 Feb 19, 2008, 09:55 AM I'm a huge fan of the map, great job with it and keep up the good work. I find the regions very accurate but also balanced in many ways. They also add a whole other dimension to picking a leader, as a normally poor choice might have a good starting location.
I do, however, have to second what a few other people have said. The map starts to lag like crazy once you get around the gunpowder/nationalism era. I was playing last night with turn load times of 5 minutes minimum.
I'm running an AMD X2 4800+ with 4 gigs of ram and an ATI 1950xtx video card.
Is there any way at all to speed up performance between turns? The game is now basically unplayable but I'm really enjoying it so far. I was cleaning my room and doing laundry in between turns but I actually ran out of chores to do :)
sirrosso Feb 20, 2008, 08:10 AM Hello,
can I play this Map with Next war troops and Next war tecnologies?
tx, L.
Military man Feb 21, 2008, 05:20 PM I down loaded it but it will not load the map.
How do you get to playing on the map?
Military man Feb 22, 2008, 09:57 PM Ok I can get to the map now but it crashes at the leader select spot what do I do to fix it?
How did you get to the map?
