I recently installed Civ4, but there is a problem.

I get past the main menu, I choose a civ, the map loads.....and then the game has the infamous "change graphics settings, etc." message and exits the program.

The version of the game at the time of installation was 1.6. I recently downloaded the 1.74 patch, and now I can't even uninstall the program.

I don't know much about computers, so a step-by-step solution would really help! :)

Some solutions I've tried already: (unsuccessfully)
reinstalling DX9
downloading 1.74 patch

Does it start at all with 1.74?
What kind of graphics card and how much memory does your computer have?
