View Full Version : Military unit trade??
HoMM3 fanatic Dec 10, 2007, 01:05 PM Isn´t it quite usual nowadays that military (maybe not units, but) technologies/vehicles and such are being traded and bought to countries which can´t manufacture that kind of vessels themselves? In game we can gift units but who on earth does that in real life? I was thinking if civ A had, say west point & pentagon and few military instructors in certain city and would produce fighters with 4 promotions straight from the airport and civ B wouldn´t have necessary prerequisites/resources to do the same, maybe civ A could sell "patents" for this kind of fighters to civ B. Civ B could then produce fighters with the same promotions as that civ A´s fighter has, but maybe for a higher price? The experience level of these fighters would also remain, so the buying civ couldn´t take an advantage of this.
HoMM3 fanatic Dec 10, 2007, 01:15 PM Furthermore, this "patent"-thingie could be developed so that if you´ve been victorious in battles and one of your units have acquired incredible amount of xp & good promotions, you could "sacrifice" this unit in one of your towns to be able to make same type of units with same promotions from the start, of course with higher (much?!?) price, again with same xp-level. This would reflect how new units are trained based on existing knowledge & experience. Could be overpowered, though, so the price of these units should be very expensive. Maybe some other limits should be added too, haven´t thought about it yet.
PimpyMicPimp Dec 10, 2007, 05:53 PM I'd love to be able to sell weapons to a smaller nation and then 10 turns later end up fighting the army which I helped to build.
Heh, what a silly concept.
Ormur Dec 10, 2007, 07:51 PM Just like the US foreign policy for the last decades. Selling weapons today to their enemy tomorrow.
scoff Dec 10, 2007, 10:59 PM should definitely be included in a future expansion or in civ V

why not weapons' trade??? I am keen on it.
Once i gave a lot of units to Elizabeth to be able to defend herself from Tokugawa with whom I did not want to get into war.
But finally, Elizabeth did not honored my efforts for preserving her liberty :) It is quite annoying that AI can not recognize what unit gifts mean.
K.F. Huszár Dec 11, 2007, 06:36 AM I agree, diplomatic optioins must become wider and more various.
Once I gave a lot of units to Elizabeth so that she could preserve her liberty against Tokugawa (I didn't want to be directly involved in the war). But since there is no built-in trait for the AI for being able to recognize the value of unit gifts.
RedRalphWiggum Dec 11, 2007, 07:22 AM I think you should be able tyo seel the blueprints for your UU. for a pretty hefty price. I'd be willing to give several techs or a lot of cash to get access to Panzers, etc
jeffreyac Dec 11, 2007, 07:31 AM Not sure I like the idea of 'sacraficing' a highly promoted unit in a city to gain the ability to build that unit - to me, one of the really cool things is developing specialist units, and I'm afraid having the ability to just crank more out would take away the specialness (assuming that's even a word!) :) . As a poster mentioned, you already CAN crank out highly experienced units if you place your GG and related buildings right and are willing to work for it....
However, I do very much like the idea of being able to offer units in trade - not the ability to build said units, but the units themselves. Offering up a couple destroyers and a battleship to an ally to help repel an invasion, or selling off extra units as 'mercenary forces' - I think that's a great idea. Could be a way to get UU's, too, if you're willing to pay the price for them. Again, though, for the purpose of keeping special units... uh... well, special, I'd hate to see the ability to build another civ's UU traded off - just the unit itself; once it's destroyed it's gone, unless you can buy some more...
So count me in on adding trading units to the diplomacy screen, just not the ability to build them... :)
Mowque Dec 11, 2007, 08:06 AM Mercenaires in RFC come fairly close......also in Multi-player, you can become a arms-dealer
sabremookie Dec 11, 2007, 03:33 PM Maybe a special American game where you trade weapons to other counties for gold and then get in a war with them 20 years later. I am from America so please don't hate me :) I think that you can gift them weapons is enough. I think it could be an exploit to sell them weapons because I don't think it could so easily be programmed for the AI to know how to value your weapons in various situations. So it might lead to a crummy game. Maybe in Civ 5?

I had the exact opposite once. I was the Chinese with Border next to Spain, , Portugal, Carthage and Ethiopian. China is no.1 in Power, Culture and Land with France, Portugal and Spain as vassal. Ethiopia was no.2 and was at war with Carthage. Since I do not want to let it kill off Carthage I started to give Carthage military support by gift of units with the like of Modern Armor and Gunship. I think I could have easily given Carthage 10 each of MA and Gunship and the hopeless Hannibal is still loosing. Which make me wonder why Hannibal is consider as a great military leader in the first place. :p Oh, and Ethiopian has Tanks and Infantries at that time. So, after fighting a loosing battle Hannibal came to me and asked to be a vassal. I have long wanted that so I immediately say yes, forgetting that he was at war with the Ethiopians. :p
Of course that lead to a long drawn out war with the Ethiopians (those border cities were all above size 20 and well defended with infantries and machine gunners :p ). I did eventually won the war with another vassal added to the empire of course. :king:
