:band: Welcome to CFC :band:
first off: did you update your graphics drivers?
What patch version are you playing?
Are other games/programs affected?

do the following:
1.: Install the 1.74 patch (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6183&act=down)
2.: Install Microsoft's newest DirectX 9c (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en) release
3.: play a game
4.: tell me if it worked ;)

gah :)
Try installing the 1.61 patch (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3) then the 1.74 patch - I have heard that some people had this problem with direct patching 1.09 to 1.74...

sorry it did not help :(
did it ask you to send an error report to Microsoft?
IF so click on show report and post the upper part of it here (a few numbers and a file name are in there - not the long stuff at the bottom).

now it doesn't show that error, it runs the game, but again with the graphics error :S

:hmm: I am sorry - I am pretty sure that this is either your graphics card not set up correctly or Vista doing weird stuff, but I have no solution for either since I don't own either :(

Hi,

I am also having the same problem as described here - my screen looks the same as the pics in post 2. I can run the game, load a game and all runs ok, except for the dodgy picture.

I have installed Civ IV, updated with patch 1.61, then 1.74, then installed BTS, then updated with patch 3.13 (the latest I think its called that). I have also installed the latest drivers for my Sis Mirage 3+ VGA card which are called uvga5_509.

I'm really hoping someone can come up with a solution to this problem so I can play the excellent BTS on my new free laptop!

Any suggestions please let me know.

I dont know any solution to that problem :S, maybe its vista problems..

mmmm, darn! May have to look into putting a small XP partition on my laptop alongside Vista. Wonder how easy that will be...gulp :crazyeye:

Ok, an update. I had to install WinXp to a separate partition on my laptop and I installed:

Civ IV
update 1.61
update 1.74
BTS
update 3.13
latest DX9c

...and it runs fine. So this shows me that:

1) A Sis Mirage 3+ (672 model number for those searching), works a-ok with this game. BTS also chooses HIGH graphic settings but I may lower that a tad to make the world scrolling quicker. But overall it looks and runs great.

2) As others can successfully run BTS under Vista it's obviously a SIS vga Vista graphic driver problem that cause the above issues.

As a work around, losing 10gb for a WinXP partition and having to reboot into WinXP to play CIV IV is a pain but worth it for me. I hope this helps others with the same problems.

...until SIS release a better VGA Vista driver !

I've had very much the same problem - brand new computer running vista with 2gb ram, dual core 2ghz processor, SIS672 Mirage chipset and some crazy graphics.

Updated to the latest drivers, patched Civ to 1.74, got the latest Direct X drivers and yet the problem persists.

I'd describe it as the different graphical layers appearing and disappearing, as if it was cycling through them, plus some artifacts across the screen. Yet each 'layer' looks fine - for instance, the map is pretty constant and renders fine, no texture problems, but things like the actions menu (go to, auto explore etc) are only there some of the time, flickering on and off, and messages jump around the screen in a bizarre way.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a copy of XP so can't install it myself, anyone have any ideas what can be done?

mate, that is exactly the same problem I had. Until SIS release a better Vista VGA driver there wont be anything you can do...and believe me I have tried EVERYTHING!!! :(

Having the exact same problem, not to sound like a broken record, but is there ANYTHING than can be done besides an XP partition? I mean it, I'll take anything. Haven't got access to XP so I'm open to literally any suggestion.

Same problem here. The flashing, overlapping graphics render the game unplayable. This needs fixing quick as pretty soon there will be no XP.......and as this seems to be inherent to vista you will all be experiencing this.

Anyone have any possible solutions at all or should I stick to Civ3 until the release of a Civ-5>???

The v5.09 lists your 672 chipset and are from December http://www.sis.com/download/download_step1.php?id=155940. They specify Vista Basic and Premium.

Be sure to follow any recommendations on their site regarding the installation completely. While graphics drivers are an often recommended update, if it's done incorrectly, it can make your computer unstable or unusable.

Let us know if they resolve the issue. Good luck!

I already have these drives and they make no difference with the above mentioned problems unfortunately. :-(

I have the same problem as described above; I take it theres been no solution found since feburary? I'm downloading the recommended SiS driver, so perhaps that will work.

Nope, no change. Tis a shame, It ran fine under XP on my old pc, but the proccessor etc wasn't up to the job. Now i have the necessary hardware, but miailed me. crosoft has failed me! guess i'll just wait for Colonization. Got a freeware version of the original, its pretty good, but i'm still getting the hang of it.
