Until now, Civ4 installation is a big screw up.
I installed Civ4. The cursor was constantly blinking when I moved it around, but I hoped a patch would correct the problem. Then went to the Advanced menu and checked for updates. It started installing the latest patch (1.74) but never finished: the computer froze. I had to reboot.
Then I got the d3dx9.dll problem. The popup suggested first to uninstall. Guess what? The unstall program cannot uninstall it. I sent the report.
In this forum I found a thread that indicated where to find the dll and install it in the Civ4 dir. Did it but got another problem (Error 1076).
So I decided to run the 1.74 patch again. I found it on the Net, downloaded it and ran it. This time it finished. But now when I start Civ4, I get a shader libs problem.
Seems that my setup is all @#$% up.
Is there a way to restart this very bad adventure over from the beginning? Or I am stuck with it from now on?
