View Full Version : SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64 ed????
GarretSidzaka Dec 13, 2007, 05:09 AM I have Window XP Pro x64 Edition SP2 on my computer and i love it.
And i have heard of rumors of a SP3 for Windows XP...
Does anyone know if they will be patching the XP Pro x64 edition as well???
Zelig Dec 13, 2007, 06:38 AM No, XP x64 is based on Windows Server 2003, so it gets patches when Server 2003 does, it has no relation to the XP patch cycle.
GarretSidzaka Dec 13, 2007, 06:09 PM does anybody have any info on when they will be releasing a service pack, if ever?
Zelig Dec 13, 2007, 06:40 PM They just released Service Pack 2 in March, so SP3, if they release it, would likely be in 2010 or 2011.

If they were going to release a SP3, which I highly highly doubt, it would be years from now, as they just released SP2 this year.
GarretSidzaka Dec 13, 2007, 07:10 PM yeah, i picked up SP2 but i had no idea it was soo soo recent! I like the SP2 for XP x64 alot more than i liked the SP2 for XP home. I often didn't even install it for Home, but now i always install SP2 for XP x64.
do you guys use x64 ed.?
Zelig Dec 13, 2007, 07:50 PM do you guys use x64 ed.?
Not anymore, hardware and software support for XP x64 is awful compared to support for Vista 64-bit.
I used it for about 6 months before Vista was released, am quite happy for the upgrade.
GarretSidzaka Dec 13, 2007, 09:17 PM what kind of problems did you have?
so far my problems have been an old ass printer and old ass webcam drivers didn't work. and maybe there is very occasional screwiness with the "Program Files (x86)" naming scheme (but i hear vista has that too)
Zelig Dec 14, 2007, 04:58 AM what kind of problems did you have?
A bunch of my hardware and software not working... doesn't really matter anymore though, as I never have to touch that OS again.
GarretSidzaka Dec 14, 2007, 05:07 PM yeah, ive had a few problems, but they don't overshadow the $399 im gonna have to pay for Vista :(
ggganz Dec 21, 2007, 07:34 PM Well... they're releasing it in the first half of 2008. SO UR WRONG!! :p
MarineCorps Dec 21, 2007, 07:37 PM Well... they're releasing it in the first half of 2008. SO UR WRONG!! :p
WT are you talking about?
ggganz Dec 21, 2007, 07:45 PM I mean they're releasing Windows XP SP3 in the first half of 2008. He's wrong because he thought it would be 2010 or 2011.
GarretSidzaka Dec 21, 2007, 10:59 PM no no no, we are talking about a different OS than XP. we are talking about Windows XP Pro x64 Edition, which is based off of Windows Server 2003 :)
ggganz Dec 21, 2007, 11:16 PM Ah.xcllcx!
GarretSidzaka Dec 22, 2007, 12:36 AM LOL this is a 64-bit discussion!!!
and I DONT WANNA BUY $399 VISTA GRRR
Speedo Dec 22, 2007, 05:00 PM yeah, ive had a few problems, but they don't overshadow the $399 im gonna have to pay for Vista :(
Do your homework before you plunk down the $$ for Vista Ultimate, 'cause there's really no reason at all to get it instead of Home Premium.
Home Premium (64 bit) is very reasonably priced at $112 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116204) - which is $40 cheaper than XP Pro (32bit).
GarretSidzaka Dec 22, 2007, 07:18 PM oh! i had heard that only Ultimate supported 64 bit. i guess i heard wrong. whats the main differences of Vista Home x64 and Vista Ultimate x64??
CivGeneral Dec 22, 2007, 07:53 PM Shucks, I thought this was a thread about SP3 for Windows XP for the regular x86 line :p
GarretSidzaka Dec 23, 2007, 01:46 AM yeah, well we can chat about that too. i aint no "off topic" hater mod ;)
i've seen vista but im still not sure that all it adds is just eyecandy.
all i know that i want from vista is the thing that lets you use flash memory as system memory

Unless you are getting Ultimate edition for free. :D

Combining all the features of the Home Premium and Enterprise editions, plus the "Ultimate Extras", Windows Vista Ultimate has features such as business quality encryption as well as Windows Media Center. Ultimate supports up to two physical CPUs[6] and 128+ GB of memory (64-bit version). Mainstream support for Ultimate ends on April 10, 2012; extended support ends on April 11, 2017. There is also an upgrade variant of Windows Vista Ultimate available, Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Limited Numbered Signature Edition. This is a limited, numbered edition of Windows Vista Ultimate that features Bill Gates' signature on the front of the packaging along with its unique number; only 20,000 copies of this edition will be produced.
GarretSidzaka Dec 23, 2007, 04:12 PM yeah, and i talked to microsoft about an upgrade that would be like $250, but that, coupled with my current OS price, would come out to a total of $380, only a $20 savings altogether. and not to mention a way more time consuming installation :(
Speedo Dec 25, 2007, 12:52 PM Ultimate has all of the features of Home Premium and Business (mainly additional backup features, remote desktop, fax support) plus the Bitlocker drive encryption, the "Ultimate Extras" and ability to support more RAM.
98% of people will never need or use any of that stuff - be sure you actually do before you throw away those extra $$$.
BTW, MC's quote is somewhat misleading - Home Premium and Ultimate both have the same Media Center functionality.
GarretSidzaka Dec 25, 2007, 04:42 PM hey speedo
does the home premium have the thing where you can use flash memory as system memory (heck yeah i would use that!!)
ggganz Dec 25, 2007, 04:44 PM "Flash memory"?
stickciv Dec 25, 2007, 06:31 PM Yes, the OS stores needed boot files on the flash drive to allow for a faster boot time since flash memory has a fast access time.

Thats wiki for you....
GarretSidzaka Dec 26, 2007, 05:13 AM by flash memory i meant flash drives, those little usb plugs that are like 1-2 gigs. i hear that you can use them as full system memory while you run the computer!
Speedo Dec 26, 2007, 04:27 PM hey speedo

AFAIK all versions of Vista, even Home Basic, have Readyboost. Home Premium definetly does.
GarretSidzaka Dec 26, 2007, 04:34 PM Yeah, readyboost! i couldnt remember the name.
ggganz Dec 31, 2007, 12:05 PM Ah, yes, that. It does have ReadyBoost. But my flash drive doesn't have the "physical characteristics" needed to use it for ReadyBoost.
Like I need it anyway. I've got 2GB RAM anyway. :nya:
GarretSidzaka Dec 31, 2007, 03:36 PM what kind of flash drives do you need? you they specify readyboost on the packages yet?
ggganz Dec 31, 2007, 03:52 PM :dunno: Not a clue.
Zelig Jan 06, 2008, 01:37 PM Readyboost isn't all that useful. In situations where it helps, you're better off simply getting more system memory, which is dirt cheap anyway.
GarretSidzaka Jan 06, 2008, 04:53 PM yeah, system memory is dropping in price. but what if you have all your DIMMs full with ram, and you dont feel like buying all new sized ram? then i guess readyboost would be cool. or perhaps if they have it for palm PC's, that would be cool too.

Buy new sized ram anyway. ;)
8GB can be gotten for under $200, there's really no reason to be lacking in ram.
GarretSidzaka Jan 07, 2008, 02:11 AM yeah, i need to pickup ram this month or next month. i got crappy ram: 1gb
